For many years two of the most enjoyable events in the life of the students of International House have been the receptions given by Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Dodge on Election Day and by Mrs. Andrew Carnegie at Christmas time. The warm and kindly welcome which they have so generously extended from year to year has afforded succeeding generations of students from many lands a memorable experience of American hospitality at its best. In recognition of their deep appreciation and genuine enjoyment and with the desire to express in some way their gratitude and esteem, the students of International House, in publishing this Yearbook, wish to honor those who have made such noteworthy contributions to International House—Mrs. Andrew Carnegie and Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland Dodge.

Miss Ellen Broe Speaks of Friendship...

Travellingasatouristincountriesotherthanyourown, does perhaps nottellyou a great deal about the inhabitants, their way of living and thinking, and not least important, their way of working. In most cases, it means staying at hotels, whose main aim seems to make you forget that you are in a foreign country.

Thisisaverydifferentmatter ifyoudecidetostayinone placeoveralonger period, throwing yourselfwholeheartedly intothejobofgettingtoknowthepeople and picking up their language. Best of all, if you can get a job and enter into their working conditions, andthespiritofcompanionship andcooperation tobefound in that particular place, you become one of them: You are on equal terms with them, you ceasetoholdtheprivilegeorhandicap, ofbeing aforeigner. Itisoneofthemost worthwhilethingsyoucanthinkofdoing, becauseyouareworkingonthejob, youare learning a great deal,—that there are many ways of doing one thing, that different aspectsmustbestressedbycertaintemperaments, thatlocality, andsocialandeducationalbackground determinethegeneraloutlookofapeople.

Butunderlyingandabove allthings, yourealizethatthepersonyouaredealing with, whether he is sick or well, happy or sad, angry or affectionate, working or playing, is essentially the same, under the blazing African sun or under a noble grey English (oreven Danish)sky.Itissomething ofthisthat International House does forone, becauseitisaplacewhereeverydaylifeiscarriedon.

To all of us, foreign birds from many lands, taken out of our own individual setting and placed inacommon environment, allfaced with very much the same large and small troubles of language handicaps, study problems, funny food and changing climate, something happens, almostunconsciously perhaps.

Probably most of us like myself, came here with no antagonistic feeling towards anyrace, andcertainlynottowardsindividuals!Bytheendofayear, inanatmosphere thatnaturallyencouragesthewishtogiveeach otherahand, theattempttothrash outproblemsandsettletheworldingeneraltogether,—toworkandtoplaytogether, —to considerand respectindividualdifferences, youfindthatmany linkshave been added to the long chain of friendships that form a sound basis for human fellowship throughout our troubled old world.

MEN! Believe it or not, appreciate your morning greetings even when they do bring me down to earth out of the rosy clouds of my dreams. accept, as my just due, your

smile when | have risen early.Yet do not fail to notice and enjoy the veiled reproach in your eyes when | have risen tardily. For then think of the days of my childhood and of how my father looked at me when, tousled and sleep-eyed, came late to breakfast. When am away, miss the unspoken question which hung in the air when laden with mysterious parcels stepped into your elevator. miss telling you about the

grand buy made. always felt better when my new tie met with your approval. And

how am to enjoy the rich feeling of my best new suit without your unspoken

congratulations?

YEA, VERILY, the morning paper is a poor substitute for your reports of the day

(or the night), slightly changed for each newcomer. The paper lacks your discriminating

touch in the matter of the weather and of the great, or more especially, the little

things of life.

You never lost your temper, not even when your feet hurt or you were late, or

when the relief man was "lost, strayed or stolen", or when rang the bell till your eardrums quivered. You made something you called music and held my ears. And still you didn't mind. You laughed at my best jokes and knew a few yourselves. And

nothing is more international than a laugh, or a joke shared.

You know whom we like or dislike. You see and enjoy ripening friendships, see and deplore growing animosities. Never speaking a word too much, you are counselor and guards, advisors and friends. Always on duty and ready to help, you are the sine qua non of the ''spirit of the house”.

For all these things and many others .. . our heartfelt thanks!

Adrian Smuts Sums Up...

International House is already an institution in the movement toward international understanding. All credit to the founders! Yet it is still an experiment, and always will be, an experiment in human values.

A nation is nothing more than the people who make it. A family is no better than its members. International House is only what its residents are. This fact is often for- gotten amidst the chatter of foreign tongues, the blare of jazz orchestras, the peace of the Home Room, the swish of the elevators, the rattle oft tea-cups, the friendliness of the foyer, and the efficiency of the health office.

In a form of democratic living where we are staking the well-being of all on the integrity and sense of responsibility of each, what progress have we made towards knowing ourselves and knowing our neighbors? It is possible to distinguish five levels of human relationship. These constantly overlap, but can be designated as follows:—

|. The “funny foreigners’ stage—when we are only aware of the idiosyncracies of others: the complexions, noses, dresses, headwear, ablution methods, of these “lesser'’ peoples beyond the seas. This is a necessary and valuable period, but unless soon outgrown, we remain in the childhood of foreign relations.

2. The "how thrilling stage'""—when we love to go to foreign restaurants, dance with sheiks, drink beer with real Germans, wear a wreath from Honolulu or play Mah Jong with a Chinese. In our attitude there is still some of the romanticism of adolescence.

3. The "solving common problems'' stage—when with greater maturity comes the altruism of being almost blind to differences between nationalities, we work together on dance, magazine, international affairs committees, to solve problems common to all. Such are the beginnings of world peace.

4. The "common humanity" stage—when each begins to realize that, as Aeschylus has pointed out, ''the wise have much in common with one another". At the same time there is the awareness, too, that crows are black the world over. We begin to realize that the "foreign difference" layer is very thin; and underneath we are just plain good or bad individuals.

5. The "absolute" stage—so rare and so little understood comes only after deep sharing of human need—a sickbed, a sorrow, a common enthusiasm perhaps. There is a falling apart of human reserve, of years of accumulated prejudice, centuries of tradition and culture, of pride of selfishness. Then has emerged a new spiritual sensitivity and something of the love which passes understanding.

And so we remind ourselves that it depends on the way in which Saul constructs the data of his own experience, whether what he finds is a Kingdom or just humble beasts of burden.

re constant repetition of the ideas which are back of the International House movement seem to many of us a hollow salute to a cosmopolitan ideal which has little basis in reality. A world torn with crisis and rivalries is an unpromising field for the active advance of an understanding spirit among different peoples. Yet the existence of the International Houses and their work during the past fifteen years is a challenge to defeatists, a challenge which has been reinforced this year by two very significant developments in the work of International House; namely the founding of the International House Alumni Association, and the publication of the "International Quarterly".

The International House Alumni Association was founded by old members of the House who wished to keep alive the stimulating friendships they had formed with students from all over the world, and who felt that the experience they had had here was worth maintaining in their own lives. The scope and the intention of the organizers of the Alumni Association is well expressed in the formal constitution adopted at the meeting of the Association on last November tenth:

"To cooperate with International House, New York, in promoting its purposes of international friendship and education;

To preserve and strengthen among our members the comradeship and understanding that is International House;

To acquire a knowledge and appreciation of the culture and life of all peoples for the furtherance of goodwill between nations and races; and

To encourage the establishment over the world of groups of Alumni of International House, New York, and to further the cooperation of such groups with each other and with International House, New York, and with other International Houses."

Here, in formal language, is expressed a feeling which must have been in the hearts of many mem-

bersonleaving International House. How tokeep intouchwitholdassociates? Howtomaintainthe cordialitywhichresidenceintheHouse made possible?Howtoadvanceinsomedegreethespiritof international understanding which rests on human sympathy and interest?

AlreadythereisstrikingproofthattheAssociation is fulfilling a real need. In several centers out: side the United States groups of former House residents have held meetings. Students asthey leave the House are being encouraged to enrol. Applications for membership run into the hundreds and comefromallcornersoftheworld.

The significance of the Association has been recognized by the Trustees of International House in their election of Mr. R. E. Gundersen, President of the Alumni Association, to membership on the BoardofTrustees.Mr.Gundersenasastudentfrom NorwaylivedintheHousefrom1927-30.Atpresent heis member ofthestaffoftheGuarantyTrust CompanyofNewYork.

MISS RUTH LERRIGO Chairman Editorial Board, International Quarterly

AN

INTERVIEW

i General sighed, "This is getting very tiresome. wasneveraninactiveperson, asanyoftheboys at Gettysburg can tellyou, and this business of standing in one place day and night is getting me down. Why, can remember the time when standinginonespotwasconsideredtreason!Ormaybe itwas justthatwe had tomove around some to keepfrombeingpoppedatbytheopposition. Now, take Chattanooga, for instance .. .'

We couldseethattheGeneral wasbuildingup to a spot of reminiscing, and decided to steer him backtothematteronhand.

"How long have you been around these parts, General?"weasked.

"How long? Years! Years and years! Must be twenty, anyhow. Why, shucks, can remember International House when itwas only a blueprint. Watchedthembuildtheplace, asamatteroffact. Good idea," he added cryptically. There was a thoughtfulpause."Bytheway, whatdoYOU think of the murals? Or shouldn't have mentioned them?"

"Well," we ventured, ‘maybe we'd better stick to our subject. After all, what we really want is yourimpressionoftheHouseduringthepastyear. Is it any different from before, or what? Are there anynew anglesthatyou, asaconstant observer, can give us?"

The General shook hishead. ''Same stuff.New people, butthe same stuff.See that bench over there? I've been keeping an eye on itforyears. Samestuff."

"Tsk, tsk, General,’ we admonished, “we were talking about the House!"

"Oh! Well, it seems to me that there's been a lot happening therethisyear. have always enjoyed Sunday Suppers, but believethey'vebeen better oflatethantheyhavebeen inalongtime.Sometimes, especially on Tuesday evenings, get sort of lonesome out here, and wish somebody would bring me acup oftea and acookie. Everybody seems to have so much fun," he sighed.

"Italwaystakesawhiletogetusedtothenew peopleinthefall. guessittakesthem awhileto get used to things, too, and it's generally October beforethingsreallybegintohappen. didwantto get uptoWest Pointwith the crowds lastyear, but,"' he smiled ironically, ''l couldn't get away. October was a good month, as recall it, because there were so many ‘first nights'—first Saturday Dance, first National Tea, first round of the tennis tournament, first meetings of the Discussion Groups, firstAmerican Groupparty,firstofDr.Adler'slec-

tures, first in war, first in peace,—no, that's somethingelseagain.Talk! There'stoomuchtalkinthis world. suppose, though, thatifyou punctuate it withroastbeefthewaytheDiscussionGroupsdo,it isn'tsobad.

"Togetbacktomystory, however, myonebig moment inOctober wastheHallowe'en Fair.Hallowe'enistheonlytimeoftheyearwhenwefellows out here can really be ourselves, and took advantage of the occasion by sneaking into the House disguised as the Student Council."

"How did you manage that?" we asked.

"Just kept arguing with myself all evening," the General chuckled.

"Who won?"

"Itwaspracticallyadraw.Thearguments went along nicely until they reached the tennis courts, and then discovered that they couldn't hold water."

The conversation seemed to be getting a bit involved, and we were afraid it might go on in that veinindefinitely.

"How did you find the Fair?’ we reminded the General.

"Very easily, and must admit that have never seen a more cosmopolitan gathering anywhere. What color! What costumes!"'TheGeneralarched aneyebrow."Whatbeer!"

Itseemed to be a good cue. "What did you think ofthe Election, and things and stuff?" we asked.

"I'veratherlosttrackofpoliticsthese lastfew decades, anditwasa relieftospend ElectionDay at the Dodges’ home in Riverdale instead of trying to decide which way to vote for the New Deal. Ulyssesand occasionallygetintoasessiononthe subject, but neither of us seems to be able to make head or tail of it. suppose," he murmured, nodding towards the Drive, "we're a little old fashioned.’

"Don't let it bother you,'' we consoled him. "The Discussion Groups can't make head ortail ofit either. But tell us, did you get to the Thanksgiving Dance?"

"No, there were too many other things tobe done. There was the trip to the Stock Exchange, fo! example, andtheatrepartiesandtraysuppersand visits to foreign restaurants and goodness knows whatall! didhearthatthedinnerwasverynice, though. amgettingtodepend moreandmoreon thebenchesfornews.

"Ordinarily," he continued, "'l dislike December becauseitgetssochillyouthere.Youknow—Washington at Valley Forge, and all that sort of thing.
