We have “‘pitched our tent.” Here we have “camped” together, far apart from the world of differences. What have we gained from this sojourn—what to merit it? Can we not give back to the world a new appreciation of mankind, its alikeness in spirit and its interdependence?

MRS. EDMONDS’ MESSAGE
Another year of world citizenship, the exchange of opinions, the discussion of questions, has brought us into an intelligent relationship; has taught us respect for one another’s ideas. But generosity, human kindness, sympathy, and service, flowing from heart to heart, and the knowledge that spirituality in relationships transcends controversy and organization, have taught us really to know and love one another.

I am a house of echoes. What of Love, Friendship, and Understanding, my friends sing into me, will come back to them.

THE TALE OF THE YEAR
“O wonder!
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How bounteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in it!”
In reviewing the activities of the year it is interesting to consider what has been the cumulative effect of life in the House upon the students who have lived in it. What has it meant to them? Behind all the activities, manifold and various as they have been, behind the expenditure of time, money, and energy, there has been one great binding purpose—the creation of a spirit of brotherhood.
An examination of the various events of the year may’ show how full and adequate has been the opportunity for the development and growth of understanding among the nations, for the range of exploration has included the rocky ways of the Intellect; quiet paths of Comradeship; the sweet seclusion of Music and the craggy steeps of Drama; the airy fields of Recreation; the goodly meadows of Understanding.
Knowledge and thought have been increased and stimulated through midweek lectures, Sunday evening debates, and Saturday lunch-club discussions, when intrepid leaders have taken keen followers through the adventurous ways of philosophy, travel, religion, education, music, art, literature, business, economics, and international relations. A list of the topics will fire the imagination of any thinker. His Eminence Tai Hsu, on “Buddhist Philosophy”; Dr. Cousins on “The Cultural Revival in India”; Dr. Lopez on “The Political Relations between Hispanic-American Countries and the United States of America”; Dr. Kilpatrick on “Foreign Schools”; “Intelligent Co-operation Through Student Movements”; Hindu Intelligentsia’; “Do We Need a New Idea of God?”; “Struggles of the Negro”; “Economic Justice and the Coloured Race”; “American Poetry and Drama”; “The Automobile Industry of the World’; “Life and Religion”; The Balkans Through Hungarian Eyes”; “Primitive Tribes of Siberia”; “Tariff Problems”; “Architecture”; “Facing Facts in the Pacific”; “Impressions of Russia”; “The Problem of Tolstoy”; “The Universal Religions Peace Conference”; “The Hungarian-Roumanian

Land Dispute’; “The Social Problem of the Child’; “International Disarmament”; “Socialism”; ““The Contemporary French Novel’. In the Student Assemblies a royal clash of world-wide opinions resounded over such subjects as “That Western Civilization is on the Decline’’, “That Immigration Restrictions are Unjustifiable’, and “That the Lecture System of the Universities is Out of Date’; It would be difficult to overestimate the healthy effect of the mental jerk whereby one’s viewpoint is doubled through the exercise of debate.
Far less strenuous, but how deeply significant, have been the wanderings in the fields of fellowship. Brightest of all was the Christmas Party given by Mr. and Mrs. Edmonds. Let the words of a member to a sick absent friend convey the spirit of the gathering: “Mr. and Mrs. Edmonds sang now for us. It was so sweet, so modest, so touching that the tears sprang into my eyes. Can you imagine that? With a heart full of thankfulness we went away. I wished I could enclose in my envelope a part of the joy and happiness they gave us and hand it over to you.” Equally intimate, with here and there the close touch of a personal talk, have been the Tuesday evening and Friday afternoon Teas, the floor “Get-togethers”, the group Breakfasts, the afternoon and evening at home of Mr. and Mrs. Edmonds, and the Vesper gatherings. Of a wider range were the Receptions to Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, and to the group of South African Student Visitors, and the combined rejoicing of the Thanksgiving Dinner.
At all these gatherings the music of the nations has been a bond of enjoyment. An Hungarian folk song, a Greek melody, a Syrian shepherd song, an English carol, a French round, a German student song, an Indian lullaby, Spanish serenade—have these not won our love? Will the House Chorus, with the words and music of a song made by the students themselves, not sing into their hearts “How beautiful mankind is”? The Music Group and the different National Groups, generous of time and talent alike, have provided hours of

peace and rich delight by its series of concerts and musicales, including such great artists as Georges Enesco, the famous violinist, Walther Kirchoff, of the Metropolitan Opera, Henry Cowell, the exponent of the “cluster” theory, Erwin Woliner, the German violinist, and Ernest Vallejo, our own Filipino violinist. In the field of dramatic art time and energy have been lavishly given. The National Nights, each one a rich reward to the hard-worked performers and directors in the great pleasure and understanding afforded to their fellows, have been among the year’s most interesting adventures. The Chinese plays, with the romantic comedy of one contrasting with the the beauty of filial piety in the other—the Filipino feast of song, dance, scene, legend, music, and speech—the British fun and frolic on the deck of H. M. S. Pinafore—the American portrayal of life’s comedy, tragedy, and mediocrity—all these have contributed in a spirit of good-will and gaiety to the understanding of a world “that has such people in it.” Nor has the dramatic work been exclusively nationalized—for in “Richelieu” there appeared a fine cosmopolitan cast, and in the rich fun of Hallowe’en all nations shared in the riot of masquerading.
By day, too, the lure of shared pleasures has drawn the nations together. The crimson and gold loveliness of West Point and the Hudson during the Fall, the glowing birth of the cherry blossoms at Washington in Spring, the treasures of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the wonders of Wanamaker’s, the inner workings of the great Times offices and the Telephone Exchange, and the thrills of the Stock

Exchange—all these have been offered and gladly enjoyed. Free evenings have had the zest of dancing classes and dances, while many edges have been rubbed smooth in the jolly hours of recreation in the gymnasium.
Here, there, and everywhere, the returned traveller may find rich material for his Tale of the Year, but undoubtedly the grand final epic would be the Sunday Suppers—for here, week by week, has been the growth of the House. The delicate flowers, simply arranged by the girls, the twinkling candles, and the gay surprise of the modest meal remain forever as the setting for that great garland of personal- ities that, Sunday after Sunday, has ringed the tables. Completing the linking of individuals came the binding beauty of music crowned by the final grandeur of intellectual co-operation. For here were great speakers, great subjects, and great listeners—Hamilton Holt on “An Adventure in Common Sense Education”; Madame Naidu on “What Is Happening in India”; Chief Joseph Strong Wolf on “The Gift of Understanding”; Edwin Markham and James Weldon Johnson talking of Poetry and reading their own works; Norman Thomas on “Socialism”, and Ivy Lee on “Capitalism’’.
And so to the final ceremony—passing on the light—. Here, with solemn dedication, each nation signifies its share in the great hope of the House: “That brotherhood may prevail.”

The House Song
OT for the present only
Not for ourselves alone; Not for great gain and glory
Nor deed yet to be done; Not for the swift adventure
As distant seas we sail—
Not these—we are here to live
“That brotherhood may prevail.”
Here to create the friendship
That widens the range of life; Here to learn understanding
That shall end the nations’ strife; Here to pass on aflame
The light that can never fail, The Keystone of the House,
“That brotherhood may prevail.”
Swiftly the days speed by On the wide wings of good-will; Laughter and effort and labor
Testing our untried skill. Yet daily we gather the notes
Of an anthem earth will hail— The future Song of the Nations:
“That brotherhood may prevail.”
—Olive Rowe.
