Foreword
A NOTHER year at International House is finished— a year of experience in living with folk, men and women students of all the nations of the world. QWe have forgotten our differences of race, creed and color in our alikenesses in the fundamental principles of life which we find we have in common.

We have “pitched our tent.” Here we have “camped” together, far apart from the world of differences. What have we gained from this sojourn— what tomeritit? Can we not give back to theworldanewappreciation of mankind, its alikeness in spirit and its interdependence?

& RECORD OF THE YEAR
The fourth year of International House has run its due course. It has been a unique progress, no less to those who have enjoyed its previous seasons than to those who have encompassed their first. Each year remains as intriguing as the preceding one, a year packed with unpredictable hap- penings, with unplanned and sometimes unimaginable pleasures, with new discoveries and new orientations beyond any previous experience.
The philosophy of International House is clearly discoverable upon investigation and the principles on which it stands are evident and com- prehensible. But it is not enough only to understand such a foundation. It is necessary to live a year in the House to see those principles in their working out and to comprehend them in their fullest expression. That is why at International House becomes a rare and fortunate privilege, in which can be seen the actual practice, the practicable operation of such an experiment as is implied in the philosophy of its foundation.
SUNDAY SUPPERS—Of the numerous activities contained within the International year, the most comprehensive has been perhaps the institution of the Sunday Suppers. In these familiar unions, wherein the five hundred members and their guests have gathered weekly, two neces- sities have been amply administered in the form both of physical refresh- ment and a somewhat less obvious mental provision. Community singing, that most excellent expression of vocal yearnings, debates, quite as worthy of the members’ indulgence, and the opportunity to hear the addresses of varied and authoritative speakers, have all been provided. Among the last indicated have been our own Mr. Edmonds, speaking on “Understand- ing the Status Quo,” Doctors Kuo, Jaishon and Sproul, internationalists, Professor Kilpatrick, educationalist, P. W. Wilson, Dr, E. E. Hume, Sena- tor Manuel Quezon of the Philippines, Senator Copeland and Senator Honnorat of France, Dr. William Prendergast and Bishop Nicolai of Serbia, speaking on international relations and foreign affairs; closer to America, Commissioner Day of Ellis Island, Doctor Vincent of the Rocke- feller Foundation, President MacCracken of Vassar College and Mr. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; and finally, Dr. Frederick Keppel, who spoke on “Foundations,” and Doctor Campbell, astronomer and President of the University of California, who embraced comprehensively enough the entire universe in his address.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ASSEMBLY—Certain
of these Sunday night ceremonials have been set aside for the pursuit of argument, a chase equally exciting as the hunt for information and occurring in the Inter- national Student Assemblies. Debates under the formal conduct of a chairman appointed monthly have taken place on a variety of serious and dignified subjects; Prohibition (a discussion not wholly without humor), the comparison of Western and Eastern civilizations, the revision of the Treaty of Versailles, and the uses and abuses of the present-day family system.
FORUMS
AND INTEREST GROUPS—These
monthly affairs have in turn provoked the more intimate discussions under the Forums and Interest Groups, wherein a tremendous range of controversy has covered subjects from the purely political, as in Professor Hodge’s address on the “New Economic Factors in Europe,” through “Folk High-Schools and Colleges” (delivered by Professor Manniche of Denmark), “A code of ethics for rela- tions between religionists,” and “Eastern Buddism and Christianity,” to purely literary and artistic subjects such as “The trend of the modern Russian novel,” “Early American literature” and “The literature of India and Persia.”
Debate is the essence of understanding, a sympathetic process wherein argument pro and con is cultivated in recognition of the point of view of the other side, and where prejudice and preconceived judgment are laid aside for the purpose of the meeting. The debates of the House have as a rule taken place in the lower floor National Rooms, after the main event of the Sunday Supper. They have covered innumerable problems in a manner tending to the enlightenment and to the satisfaction of all parties to the questions. No problem has been too formidable for our courageous debaters: “India’s struggle for freedom,” “Difficulties of race relations,” “American cancellation of the inter-allied debts”—in which it was proved in perfect amiability that the debts should be cancelled and that they should be immediately paid. “American culture as viewed by students of other lands” was a singularly friendly occasion, if only for the funda- mental assumption necessary for such a discussion. “Minorities in the Balkans and the Near East” came in for well merited attention, as did “The Simon Constitutional Commission to India” and, for a sufficient

vis-a-vis, “Gandhi's view of life.” These debates have been pleasant affairs, and they have proved the possibility of diverse opinion meeting and com- ing to agreement under the proper auspices. They were frequently pro- longed beyond the formal limits of the evening session, when discussion carried on unfatigued in the Waffle Wing until only the approach of eleven o'clock called a final halt.
NATIONAL NIGHTS—The
institution of National Nights gave oppor- tunity for a more exclusive display of the varied talents and accomplish- ments of the members. In the National Nights, effort was concentrated on giving an impression of the individual countries, of their separate culture and of their most eminent national characteristics. A certain broadness of spirit was evinced by the adroit manner in which selected amusing and satirical features of the different lands were lightly touched upon—such as the presentation of Chicago offered in the American pro- gram. Of the various entertainments presented by the national groups, perhaps the most enjoyable from the standpoint of colour and variety were those of the Indian and Scandinavian members. The Indian group produced “The Little Clay Cart,” a charming and witty comedy of the date 500 A. D., and the Scandinavian membership a succession of colorful and entertaining tableaux. A brilliant spectacle was offered by the Latin- American Group, as by the Japanese, both of which were figured with excellent dancing, and finally by the Germans in a production rich in music and abounding in typical German feeling. Mid-week programs sup- plemented those of the National Nights, in which were lectures, motion pictures and entertainments by both the Dutch and the Swiss Groups.
MUSIC—Music, that pleasantest of all the arts, was assiduously culti- vated. Concerts by the Syracuse University Glee Club, the Wednesday evening recitals of the Music Group—one of the most praiseworthy and hard-working of all the associations within the House—and most enjoy- able and artistic recitals of chamber music by a string quartette provided this form of entertainment. The finale of all the musical effort of the House was reached by the musical Sunday Supper of April 29, in a concert planned and carried out entirely by House talent.
EXCURSIONS—Not all the enjoyment of the International House year has been within doors. The members of the House have made many journeys together, explorations, for many of them, of unsuspected charm. The circumnavigation of Manhattan Island was the first of these, accomplished in a steamer chartered for the occasion. A more adven- turous trip was made up the Hudson River to West Point, where the United States Military Academy was duly inspected. The most important outing of all was the Easter trip to Washington, made in the midst of the cherry blossom season. Approximately thirty-five members ventured this trip, an experience of America not soon to be forgotten. Voyages of more local interest were made in New York, whereby the members visited the offices of the New York Times, the Stock Exchange, and the great labyrinths of Mr. Wannamaker’s department stores.
DEPUTATIONS—Excursions
have not only been arranged for the benefit of the members of International House, but have in addition been sent out for the information of native Americans themselves. Up until March of this year, the Extension Bureau has answered requests for speakers from over two hundred organizations, covering four of the more prominent eastern states. Over three hundred members of the House went out on such missions, making it possible for thirty-odd thousand Ameri- cans to learn something of the life, customs and conditions in forty-five foreign countries. Many different types of organizations—schools, colleges, churches—have discovered that the best way to enlarge the understanding of strange lands is from the spoken word of their representatives. Nothing human can remain foreign for any length of time, and these institutions, realizing that truism, have enabled many of the members of International House to carry information and enlightenment into America’s own camp.
SOCIAL INTERESTS—First
among the list of social diversions should come the Christmas party given by the Director and Mrs. Edmonds, Designed for the entertainment of those members remaining in New York for the holiday season, it was entirely successful and most enjoyable. It was for the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edmonds a privilege to experience such hospitality in this most homelike of festivals, Each holiday season was similarly featured with special House entertainment, from the delightful Hallowe’en Fair at the beginning of the year and through the Thanks- giving Dance to wind up in the brilliant Spring Festival of the end of April. For each of these affairs the House was skilfully decorated and the whole arrangement of the party managed with the greatest art. The Spring Festival was perhaps the most brilliant of all, with the singularly spring-like effects of the decorations, the organized dancing, the music, the entertainment by the Marsh Dancers, and the midnight refreshments. There occurred in addition to the main events of the season, weekly teas and fortnightly dances. Every Tuesday evening and every Friday after- noon the members met in pursuance of the pleasant custom of tea-time, and the dances found great favor too, being invariably well attended and thoroughly enjoyed.
With all good wishes, not unmixed with regret, the members enter- tained Mr. and Mrs. Edmonds on their departure for a world-wide voyage. The Far East Group arranged the party, and joined by all the other nationalities of the House, gave tangible evidence of their good wishes in the presentation of flowers to Mrs. Edmonds,
CANDLE CEREMONY—In
final farewell to a rich and splendid year came the Candle Ceremony. As the closing expression of the spirit and the significance of the House, representatives of each nationality that had dwelt within its walls dressed themselves in their national costumes and ranged along the sides of the great Assembly Hall to receive the burning taper passed from hand to hand in memory of the past year. In closing the ceremony, the meaning of International House was forcefully disclosed in the words, “As light begets light, so Love, Service and Good-will are passed on to others.”

Not Alone For Mighty Empire
OT alone for mighty empire, Stretching forth o’er land and sea, Not alone for bounteous harvests,
Lift we up our hearts to Thee. Standing in the living present, Memory and hope between, Lord, we would with deep thanksgiving Praise Thee more for things unseen.
Not for battleship and fortress, Not for conquests of the sword, But for conquests of the spirit
Give we thanks to Thee, O Lord; For the heritage of freedom,
For the home, the church, the school, For the open door to manhood In the lands the people rule.
For the armies of the faithful Lives that passed and left no name; For the glory that illumines Patriot souls of deathless fame; For the peoples’ prophet-leaders, Loyal to Thy living word,— For all heroes of the spirit, Give we thanks to Thee, O Lord.
God of Justice save the peoples
From the war of race and creed, From the strife of class and faction,— Make our nation free indeed; Keep their faith in simple manhood
Strong as when their lives began, Till they find their full fruition
In the Brotherhood of Man!
—William Pierson Merrill. Hudson River Looking North
