“Acclaiming marvels in our midst, a legacy of grace.” These words from the IHM Canticle of Praise reach to the depths of the hearts of each IHM Sister. With our 175th Anniversary coinciding with the Covid-19 global pandemic, the sentiment flows deeper than we could ever imagine. While the occasion of an Anniversary celebration allows one to look back to rediscover the marvels of the growth of the original foundation, these reflections are truly transformed within the framework of a world struggling to find answers to a myriad of societal issues while at the same time responding to the chaos and confusion of a pandemic-infused health crisis.

The pandemic, in itself a perplexing marvel in our midst, has brought to our attention the enduring strength of Father Gillet and Mother Theresa Maxis as they did not let anything stop them from responding to the needs of God’s people. Their dedication, their zeal and their courage in the face of tremendous obstacles allowed them to nurture within themselves and all those they met, the firm and bold conviction that our God’s boundless love is bestowed on all people without any conditions. It is freely given and it is ours to be the messenger and the conduit of that radical outpouring.

As IHMs, we are humbled and inspired by this exhortation of our Founders. Our daily communal prayers remind us that when we daily accept our God’s invitation to respond to the needs of others, the “Word is made Flesh and Christ dwells among us.”

We are equally humbled and inspired by the relationships that we have forged with all those in our lives who have nourished our vocations and who have partnered with us in showing others love’s redeeming way. Truly, these friendships have been a significant marvel in our midst, a continual infusion of the grace of our IHM Charism of love, fidelity, and creative hope.

One hundred seventy-five years ago, Father Gillet and Mother Theresa had no idea of the life and good works of the Congregation. We can only marvel at the wonders our God has bestowed on all of us.

Our hearts are overwhelmed by the goodness we have received and our prayer is one that abides daily in praise, love and thanksgiving.

Thank you for celebrating this special Anniversary moment with us. We are grateful for the marvels of your love and support. Truly, you are an integral part of our “Legacy of Grace” as we look to our providential God for a future full of hope.

History of Our Foundation

The origins of our Congregation can be traced back to a log cabin in Monroe, Michigan. It was there that Reverend Louis Florent Gillet, a Redemptorist missionary, having searched in vain for religious to teach the spiritually and educationally abandoned immigrants on the Michigan frontier, resolved to found a community of sisters of his own.

In 1845, shortly after settling into the newly constructed St. Anthony Church, in Monroe, Father Gillet was joined by Sister Theresa Maxis. Thus, the humble beginnings of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary began to take root at the hands and hearts of these two founders, who were on fire with love of God and love of neighbor.

On November 10, 1845, Father Gillet welcomed three women, Mary Theresa Maxis, who became Mother M. Theresa, Charlotte Ann Schaaf, (Sister M. Ann), and Therese Renauld, (Sister M. Celestine) to begin a community based on the spirit of St. Alphonsus Liguori. Father Gillet envisioned an educational apostolate conducted by religious women who would give witness to prayerfulness, simplicity, forgetfulness of self, humility, and a deep love and respect for each individual soul.

After several years, the original community of sisters was called to serve the people of God in many new geographic locations. Mother Maria Alma, our tenth Mother General, tells us: “The tiny seed planted in 1845, in the unpromising soil of pioneer Michigan, had become a great tree whose branches spread within three separate sections of our country, sheltered within their shadow, thousands of souls under the care of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.”

In 1858, in response to an invitation from Saint John Neumann, then Bishop of Philadelphia, the Sisters agreed to staff Saint Joseph School in Susquehanna, PA, which was formerly taught by the Holy Cross Sisters.

In 1859, a second mission was undertaken in Reading, PA. In a short time, many applicants sought to join the Sisters and a Motherhouse was established in what is now St. Peter’s Parish in Reading. The third and final division of the Congregation came in August 1871, when The Most Reverend William O’Hara, Ordinary of the newly formed Diocese of Scranton (1868), asked a number of the Sisters already teaching within the diocesan limits to form a new Motherhouse located in Scranton, PA.

Because of the increased number of Sisters, the Reading Motherhouse was transferred to West Chester, PA, in 1872.

There it remained until 1966, when the present Motherhouse, Villa Maria House of Studies, was built at Immaculata, PA. Today approximately over 600 Sisters comprise the Immaculata branch of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary who currently staff schools and parishes in the states of Pennsylvania,

New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, New Hampshire, and in Peru.

The Sisters minister in the Congregation’s corporate apostolate of Catholic education as well as in catechetical, pastoral, hospital and prison ministries, parenting programs, adult spirituality programs, counseling, literacy instruction, care of the infirm, retreat work and campus ministry. In their lives and in their work, the Sisters strive to continue to offer Praise, Love, and Thanksgiving as they carry out the Gospel mandate of Jesus, the Redeemer, “Go and teach all nations.”
