Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

It is with praise, love and thanksgiving that we offer gratitude to God for the life and vocation of Sister Elizabeth Anne Bartholomew who professed her Perpetual Profession of Religious Vows as a Sister, Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on August 4. What a blessed and grace-filled day for our Congregation and for the Church!
Sister Beth received a blessing from Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore, Most Reverend Bruce A.Lewandowski, Celebrant.
A joyful celebration! Sister Beth’s family showered her with love and support on her special day.
The IHM Administration joined Bishop Lewandowski and Sister Beth outside the IHM Motherhouse.
In the contemporary landscape of digital communication, social media influencers have emerged as powerful figures who shape trends, attitudes, and behaviors. With millions of followers on various platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, these influencers wield significant influence over public opinions, lifestyle choices, and even belief systems. It is a fascinating phenomenon that calls forth from the perceptive end user much mindfulness and discernment on who to follow and on what to buy.
This concept of influencers took on a new meaning for me recently as I attended one of our sister’s funeral. I was chatting with a guest who came to pay his respects. He related to me that he was taught by Sister in the first grade over 65 years ago. He remembered clearly poems that she taught, the order she instilled, and her unique ability to nurture in her students a genuine wonder and awe at the presence of God in their lives. He recounted that his brother had the same memories and that they were fortunate to begin their early grade school years with her influence that had stayed with them for a lifetime. While speaking with others in the room, I learned that Sister not only was a good teacher, but she was able to create a community within her classroom that to this day has strong social bonds.
It is a humbling experience to hear the stories of the influence that our sisters have had on the lives of so many people. It is even more humbling to hear how those people have assimilated into their own lives the qualities that matter most. Long before AI and social media, our sisters taught all of us that the most effective form of influence is to be truly present, to be authentic, and to strive always to build a community where each person has a strong sense of God’s love for them.
The extensive list of current benefactors and friends contained within this Annual Report speaks volumes of the power of our collective influence in continuing the IHM mission to spread the Gospel message as joyful bearers of God’s redeeming love to all those we meet.
Thank you for the inspiration and support you give to every IHM sister. Your friendship, your spiritual and financial support, and your continuing care for the world around you are powerful sources of blessing for us as we continue to be a viable IHM presence in new and vibrant ways. Thank you for never underestimating the power of your personal influence to shape trends, attitudes, and behaviors for future generations.
With gratitude,
Sister Mary Ellen Tennity, IHM General Superior
Whoever said, “There is nothing constant except change,” did not know you, our benefactors! Your faithful generosity is reflected in the pages of this 20232024 Annual Report. Once again, we especially acknowledge and prayerfully remember the souls of those whose bequeathed estates naming the Sisters of IHM and/or Camilla Hall in their planned giving. Even from their “changed” new life they continued to be our generous benefactors.
However, while the IHM charism of love, creative hope and fidelity and our commitment to various ministries does remain constant, there is some change because there are fewer sisters to be physically present in locations to meet the many needs. Thus, we have embarked upon what we call the IHM Presence Initiative. The purpose of this process is to examine how, with smaller numbers, we can still meet and expand our efforts to carry forth our mission to evangelize, to catechize and to teach. That expansion may take the form of innovative uses of technology, new opportunities for us to encounter God’s people and for them to get to know us, and a concentrated effort to communicate more concisely, informatively, and broadly. This is all because we follow the example of Jesus who travelled many different roads and ways to teach, heal, and invite people to get to know him.
Throughout the expansive list of donor names, you will see quotes from new donors who responded to the question “How do you know the IHMs?” Their responses reflect the truth that the IHM Presence has always been encountered in MANY ways. As we acknowledge your commitment to us in this report, we can commit to travel all available future roads in order to continue to encounter God’s people, inviting them to learn, know Jesus, and follow his Gospel of love and mercy.
Grateful for your “presence“ in our lives,
Sister Jeannine M. Norton Director of IHM Mission Advancement

My mother, was an IHM. She loved her time in the convent and loved telling us stories. After her marriage to my dad and mothering three children, she continued to stay in touch with her IHM friends and visited Camilla frequently. Keeping in touch with the IHMs makes me happy because you all made her happy.

I reconnected with the IHMs because I read an article in “Columban Missions” magazine about Camilla Hall which mentioned that some of the sisters had taught in Allentown, my hometown. The education and guidance we received from them can never be repaid. They provided us with knowledge and structure by which we can live our lives.

I met the sisters at St. Joachim Parish. While I was stationed there and for years after, my mom came down for the Triduum and stayed in the convent – participating in the life of the sisters - including playing cards. My mom’s special friend was Sister Sancta and they always kept in touch. S. Edward William and the other sisters mentored me more than a little despite my hard-headedness.

I attended Saint Anselm School and will never forget S. Cornelius Marie and S. Annunciata. The IHMs were excellent teachers and honestly, I would not have gone as far as I did in life without the education I received. I am now a police detective, retired from the Army National Guard and a graduate in Criminal Justice.

Growing up in West Philadelphia, I attended Saint Francis DeSales, a demonstration school, where I had a top-notch education. I taught in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for over 40 years and the sisters were instrumental in my teaching career. I am grateful and blessed they touched my life and will do so for children who are our future.

S. Marita Shaun is my cousin and I was taught by the IHMs in elementary and high school at Saint Patrick in Norristown and Bishop Kendrick High School. My friend and I even helped the sisters with their weekly grocery shopping at the A&P. In school, Sister Mary Kathryn introduced me to my love for literature. Now my friends and I attend many programs at the IHM Conference Center and it is like going home again!

I have had a lifetime (85 year) connection with the IHMs. I attended St. David School in Willow Grove and as facilitator of Adult Spirituality, I was grateful to use Dunne Hall for our group when needed. Many IHM sisters led days of reflection for us including Sister Eunice Marie who remained a life-long friend.

Sister Megan Capurso, a novice, met the IHMs because her family always vacationed in Stone Harbor and she says, “We would stop by the Nun’s Beach and purchase some gear.” Wearing one of the Nun’s Beach sweatshirts at Boston College brought about a stronger connection. She attracted the attention of Sister Laura Downing and eventually entered the Congregation as a postulant in 2022.

(Sister Maura Thomas) Entered Eternal Life 9.10.23
Our sister, Joan Marie Ames, was the oldest of five children born to Joan and Jack Ames. As the oldest, she often babysat the rest of us. Little did we know that God was honing her skills for a vocation that would entail caring for others, especially children.
Joannie, as she was affectionately known, was the pioneer for the rest of us. She was the first to go to school, graduate and leave home. She did that the day she entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The day she departed our home was a sad day for us. We are a close family and her departure left us with a sense of loss. While she was in formation, we visited her one Sunday each month. We looked forward to enjoying her company and the delicious picnic lunch that our mother prepared.

Sister Rosa Maria Arenas (formerly Carmen Arenas Chumpitaz) was born on February 7, 1943, in Callao, Peru. Affectionately known as Ñaña to her family, she was the second of four children born to Carmen and Gilberto Arenas, along with two brothers and one sister, Yolanda. Rosa attended Colegio San Antonio de Mujeres in Callao where she came to know the IHM sisters. An excellent student from an early age, she demonstrated a love of learning, especially in the area of science.
Rosa was the first member to enter the Congregation in the newly established “Noviciado” (Novitiate) in Santiago, Chile in 1963. During her early years as a professed sister, she taught at Villa Maria in Santiago and earned a degree in biology from the Universidad de Chile.
Rosa loved Chile, spending many years there teaching at Villa Maria Santiago and Nuestra Sra. del Carmen in Curacavi. She later served as principal in Curacavi and as a science and religion teacher in IHM schools in Peru. Her students found
Once Professed, Sister Joan worked tirelessly in every apostolate to which she was sent. She approached each one with a lively faith that God was guiding her journey, a profound hope that she could be an instrument of God’s grace, and a deep love for the people she was sent to serve. She was the ultimate cheerleader for Little Flower High School, her final assignment for more than two decades. She was loved by colleagues and students who admired her selflessness.
Joannie brought a smile, energy and enthusiasm everywhere she went. She would do anything for anyone and never had an unkind word. She lovingly cared for our elderly parents. She was always there to lend support or provide a shoulder to cry on. She showered nieces and nephews with love and affection. They relished her presence and their little faces lit up when she entered the room. She was an exceptional cook, whose tasty treats were just one of the many ways she brought joy to others.
Sister Joan’s Golden Jubilee was a blessed time for us to celebrate this special gift from God. Her death leaves a void that only God can fill. This humble servant was loved and will be remembered in our hearts forever.
Kathleen (Ames) Gaffney, Marie (Ames) Buonanno, and Father John Ames
her to be caring and understanding, demanding but always fair, and interested in their academic success and their spiritual and social well-being.
In 2017, Rosa was assigned to the IHM Literacy Center at St. Bernard’s and afterwards as an assistant in the sewing room in Camilla where she quietly went about her duties helping to make the Sisters “lucirse bien” (look good!). She transitioned from staff to resident at Camilla in 2022 when her health issues became more challenging. She missed being able to go outside to walk each day. Long walks in nature were one of her favorite past times as was playing the flute (she was self-taught!). Keeping up to date with her sister, Yolanda, and nephews in Peru was also a regular ritual. Yolanda missed their lunches and outings to San Miguel Shopping Center.
Those of us who knew Rosa (Ñaña) well were gifted with a glimpse of the depth of her love of God and especially his mother, Mary. Quiet and introverted by nature, she enjoyed outings with friends and treated them to many quiet, yet frequent, humorous comments made with a twinkle in her eye!
In her own quiet way, Rosa touched the lives of many . . . family, friends, students, parents, and sisters in her community and her absence is felt deeply.
Que descanses en paz, Rosa! May you rest in peace, Rosa!
Sister Mary E. Smith, IHM and Yolanda Arenas

Geraldine, the second daughter of Hugh and Margaret Cantwell, was raised in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania. Her father ran the family business, the Cantwell Hotel, and her mother taught English and directed the band at Nativity High School. Her parents’ occupations influenced Geraldine’s early years.
Family business and involvement with band members nurtured her. Her sister, Sal, would dance with Gerry while watching American Bandstand as Gerry sang all the lyrics. More musical involvement entered Gerry’s life as she traveled with the band for games and parades and bonded with many of them. Her mom was referred to as “Chief,” and band member, Tom Purcell, called Gerry “Little Chief.” That name carried forward over the years and always made her smile. Gerry went on to play the glockenspiel in the band, showing her dedication in carrying a weighted instrument with a smile.
After high school, she followed her dad’s advice and entered Ford Business School. Upon graduation, she secured a business

Sister M. Catarin P. Conjar, my Aunt Catie, was the youngest of nine children born to immigrant Croation parents. Their Catholic religion was as much a part of their lives as was their Croatian heritage. The parish church was the center of Aunt Catie and her family’s life.
In the book, The Moral Compass, author William Bennett writes, “All children need bread and shelter. But a true home is much more than that. Children also need love and order, because they are not born knowing the difference between right and wrong.” In the Conjar household there was a moral compass that guided Aunt Catie and her sibling’s behavior and formed their values. Her parents were honest, industrious, good people who fostered self-awareness and saw the value of every human being.
As a child Aunt Catie loved to read and be in charge. She ran for numerous school offices, and as an adult, this served her well
position in Washington, D.C. with the National Labor Relations Board. She jumped on the technology bandwagon early using her skills to the benefit of the clients she served. She lived in D.C. and Arlington, Virginia, and travelled home to visit for the holidays.
Gerry entered the convent after her D.C. years and applied the same attention to her IHM family as her birth family. Aunt Deane introduced her nieces and nephews to the IHM sisters with great pride and conducted a tour of her new residence as if it were a West Wing tour and she was the head guide.
She put her technical and information management skills to good use in school offices, at Immaculata, and at the Motherhouse. She especially loved her time at Cardinal Brennan High working with the Director of Development. Her clerical skills were valued, and the staff worked together as a family.
Gerry cherished her Cantwell connections. Modeling her cousin, Jim, she spent time researching family history and constructing the family tree. Her sister, Margie, remembers Gerry sending cards to family for special celebrations. Her nieces and nephews remember her being quick to give a hug, gift them with puzzles or pretzels, or lovingly crochet an afghan for special occasions. She always had a family story to tell or pictures to share.
Gerry completed her journey on earth with her kind friend, Sister Ann Raymond, by her side. Her birth family is grateful for the loving care provided by her IHM family over the years.
Requiescat in pace.

When Aunt Catie entered the convent, no one in her family believed she would stay. Seventy years later she had continued to dedicate her life to serving others. She loved teaching and had many assignments over the years. Aunt Catie enjoyed her last assignment before retirement as Dean of International Students at Immaculata University. Her thirst for knowledge made her the perfect person for this position since she loved the interaction of diverse cultures.
Every Christmas and every birthday Aunt Catie’s gifts were always our favorite surprises. As she later shared, they were all items she had won playing bingo at Camilla Hall. She would always remember my grandchildren at Christmas with special and thoughtful gifts.
She was very close to my father, George, so my family’s relationship with her was also very close. She was there in good and bad times for our family. She was a source of strength and love.
Sister M. Catarin P. Conjar was a blessing to her entire family. We enjoyed hearing stories from her childhood and her days of teaching. She dedicated her life to serving others and was on a journey of constant learning. I will always be grateful for her presence in my life and the love she shared with my family. Her life was an amazing one and she lived it with dignity and grace.

My one and only sister, Hope, was born on March 2, 1941, in Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital to Rose Mary Endres and Joseph Thomas Costello. Our mom was from a large family of 14 children and had a sister who joined the IHM Congregation. Our dad was the oldest of four. Two weeks after Hope was born, Sister Patricia Anne Hughes, IHM, was born in the same hospital. Years later, after Profession, the two became life-long friends and it was her nursery mate who was continually by her side during her last days at Camilla.
We attended Sacred Heart school in Havertown, Most Blessed Sacrament in Philadelphia and St. Alice in Upper Darby, all staffed by the IHM sisters. We attended West Catholic High School and Hope graduated in 1959.
Hope was employed by an insurance company until she entered the Congregation on February 11, 1960. Sadly, our

Sr. Odette Jeann Dalfo, known as Sister Assumpta Regina, or Aunt Odette as she was known to her nieces and nephews, was born in Philadelphia in 1930 to Louis and Cora Dalfo who emigrated to the U.S. after World War I from Italy and France. She led a life of firsts. She was the first daughter born into a house of boys. She was the first member of the extended Dalfo family to attend college receiving degrees from Immaculata College and later a Master of Arts degree in French from Millersville University. She was also the first person in her family to join the IHM Congregation preceding the entrance of her younger sister, Sister Solange Dalfo.
Family was important to Aunt Odette. Whether she was assigned to Merion Catholic in Coledale, Bishop Shanahan in West Chester, or her many years at Lancaster Catholic, she found a way to be at all the important events in the Dalfo family. But even more important, she was there for ordinary events
mother passed away unexpectedly two weeks later. While it was a difficult time for our family, I know that our mom could not have been happier than when she witnessed Hope being accepted into the IHM Congregation. When Hope was professed in 1962, she took the name of Sister Mary Rosita.
Hope’s initial assignment was at St. Dominic’s in Northeast Philadelphia. She taught first grade and that is where her heart was for the remainder of her teaching years. She loved the “babies” and was very content in their presence. Hope taught mostly in the Philadelphia region with the exception of McAdoo Catholic in upstate Pennsylvania.
She enjoyed retreats at Stone Harbor, various summer assignments with other sisters, and being a summer volunteer at Camilla. When the Eucharistic Congress was in Philadelphia in 1976, she was assigned to the cloak room at the Civic Center. The highlight for her was meeting Mother Theresa in person.
As a family, my husband, Bill, and I spent weekends and holidays with my sister. For her Silver Jubilee we took a trip to the Holy Land and Rome, a beautiful memory for the three of us. However, I always thought that she was happiest in the company of her IHM Congregation. She loved being an IHM and that love was returned to her in her final days at Camilla.
Rest in peace my little sister.

such as Sunday family dinners, a trip to Longhorn Steakhouse, or a Fourth of July picnic. Her presence was constant, calm, and reassuring.
Aunt Odette loved to celebrate other people’s lives and was delighted to hear about the accomplishments of her family, especially those of the children. A good grade on a test, a touchdown in a football game, a new song learned on piano, a scholarship won, a part in a musical, or even a pretty drawing in crayon were all important to her, because we were important to her.
She was a brave and patient person as evidenced by the school trips she took to France in the summer with her high school students. Chaperoning a dozen or so teenagers (who barely spoke the language) to a foreign country represented an act of courage and faith.
Aunt Odette was not a huge fan of dogs, but dogs loved her. All the dogs in the Dalfo family found her irresistible! The more that she tried to shoo them away, the more they demanded her attention. Our family took delight in watching it unfold time and time again.
We admired Aunt Odette’s convictions on what was right or wrong. She was authentic and those who knew her will miss that.
Aunt Odette, we love you and we miss you very much. May God bless you and please say “hi” to the dogs for us.

What an honor it was to be able to gather in the beautiful chapel of Camilla Hall on January 3, 2024 to honor and celebrate the incredible life of our cherished Aunt Jeannine – a woman who was larger than life itself. Each one of us, from the youngest to the oldest, has been deeply touched by her presence.
Aunt Jeannine was a beacon of joy, radiating warmth, love, and an infectious sense of humor that brought light into each of our lives. At 95, her vibrant spirit made us all feel remarkably special.
One summer during a family vacation, the room echoed with laughter as everyone enjoyed an app that hilariously altered photos. Aunt Jeannine, always eager to join in the fun, laughed heartily at the transformed images of herself, captivating us all with her spontaneity and unbridled joy.
Her love for music was another thread that bound us

Sister Mary Cuthberta Dick, known to her family as Lucille Anne Dick, was the daughter of William and Agnes Dick. She was the second of 10 children. Her decision to enter religious life was the happiest day of her life. She wanted to marry our Lord and to serve him for the rest of her life. Her parents and her entire family were very proud of her. Lucille joined the IHM Congregation in February of 1952 and served faithfully for almost 72 years until her death in January of 2024. Her motto was “I am the maid servant of the Lord.”
A passion for education, Sister Mary taught grades two through six for 45 years. She taught at the following schools: St. Martin of Tours, Philadelphia; St. Joseph the Worker, Frackville; St. Anne, Lansford; St. Peter, Elizabethtown; St. Gertrude, West Conshohocken; St. William, Philadelphia; St. Stephen, Port Carbon; St. Eugene, Primos; St. Bartholomew, East Brunswick; St. Jane Frances, Easton. She also taught religious enrichment at SS. Simon and Jude School in Bethlehem.
together. She could play the drums, strum the guitar, and her voice would fill the air whenever a Frank Sinatra tune played. We all remember those moments fondly, gathered around a pool or on a beach, enjoying her melodies.
Yet, amidst all these cherished memories, it’s the simplest gestures we’ll miss the most. Her greeting cards, whether for birthdays or holidays, always carried heartfelt wishes and promises of prayers. The impeccable penmanship at 95 was a testament to her thoughtfulness, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts.
She served as a Godmother to many in our family, guiding us spiritually and reminding us unwaveringly of our faith. Aunt Jeannine effortlessly cultivated lifelong friendships, maintaining connections that spanned decades.
Although her earthly journey has reached its conclusion, Aunt Jeannine’s legacy lives on within each of us. Her unwavering faith, her love for God and the Blessed Mother, her loyalty, and her playful spirit have left an imprint that transcends time. Together, we bid her farewell celebrating a life lived with unparalleled vitality and leaving behind an enduring legacy. Sister Marie Jeannine Dawson – her life touched countless others, and her love remains etched in our collective hearts.
We will always remember how Sister would send us cards and letters for every occasion. She was always smiling and loved to tell jokes, especially the one about the He-brews! Sister never complained. We will truly miss her and our phone calls to each other. May her soul rest in peace, now and forever!

At a young age, Lucille was the teacher in our family. When she taught her younger siblings and was asked about the meaning of a certain word, she would say, “There’s the dictionary – look it up!” After her teaching was done at the house, she applied for a civil service job in Philadelphia at the Federal Courthouse and began to work there.

My aunt, (Tía Dalita), Sister Dalia Flores, was a unique and remarkable person who had an exemplary life. She was born in 1936 in Lima, Peru in the middle of the Depression to a middle-class family. She was the youngest of four sisters, the four daughters of our grandparents, Graciela and Humberto Flores. They were fortunate to live in La Punta, one of the most beautiful neighborhoods of Lima.
Tía Dalita attended the Catholic school in Callao, Colegio San Antonio, run by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. There she learned English and felt a call to a religious vocation. In 1955, when she was eighteen years old and when her mother passed away, she decided to join religious life as a Sister, Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This meant a very big change in her life – moving to the United States (to Philadelphia) at a

Sister Ann Immaculata Gallagher was a true blue IHM. A quiet, thoughtful person who was always grateful for the kindness given to her. She attended Saint Ann grade school and high school in Lansford. After graduating from high school, she was offered an opportunity to study at Stanford University in California. Instead, Ann chose to attend Immaculata College where she majored in chemistry. After becoming a teacher, she encouraged others in their studies and helped them to continue their education beyond the walls of Immaculata.
During her tenure at Immaculata, she served on many committees and was involved in student activities. In addition to teaching, Ann kept chemistry labs meticulous for many years and did a host of hidden tasks such as keeping instruments in good condition and labs prepped creating a wonderful chemical learning environment.
Ann taught organic chemistry but also had a great love for
very young age. My mother, Celia, decided to go with her and established herself in Washington, D.C. while Dalia was in the convent in Philadelphia. That was the beginning of a long life dedicated to God.
She was a novice and then, of course, a sister. She went back to Peru in the 1960s and worked at many schools there run by the IHMs. One of her most memorable experiences was in 1974 when she served as a missionary for a few months in the Peruvian jungle and taught the word of God to the Ashaninka people. In 1975, she returned to Philadelphia for training and work. That year was also the Holy Year at the Vatican, and she made a trip to Rome with her sister, Graciela. She returned to Lima in 1976 and continued working and teaching for four more decades at IHM schools in Lima such as Inmaculado Corazón, Carmelitas, San Antonio de Mujeres, and Villa María.
In July of 2015, her health deteriorated, and she had to retire from her work. In September of 2018, she returned to the U.S. to Camila Hall where she spent the last five years of her life. Her life had turned full circle. She passed away in September of 2023. She is remembered as a kind and modest woman who dedicated her whole life to the service of God. We feel privileged and honored to have had someone like Tía Dalita in the family.

the history of chemistry. She spoke about the chemists of the past as if they were her friends. She also empowered many young women to pursue careers in the sciences. She always pointed out women scientists who made great contributions but often were overlooked.
Ann had a keen insight into people and knew how to balance humor with the reality that you can’t change people. For example, when one of her students had difficulty understanding a chemistry formula that Ann put on the board, the student asked Ann if she could explain it and Ann replied with a smile, “that is the only way I know how to do it.” Also, Ann always had prayer books among the chemistry books.
She had the opportunity to travel with her dear friend, Sister Isabel Mary, visiting many countries especially those with significant Catholic shrines. In fact, her friendship with Isabel seemed to make her somewhat of a theologian.
Ann was very fond of her alma mater, Notre Dame, and made sure that she had the school’s football schedule so she would not miss a game. She enjoyed watching movies on TCM channel. She also loved dogs and always thought we should have one at Gillet! Ann loved Immaculata and had a great devotion to Mary.
May she rest in peace.

I (Michael) am the oldest of 10 children and Aunt Mary (known to most as Sister Mary Cecilius) was my Godmother. We remember visiting her in the convents where she lived especially her first assignment at St. Laurence in Upper Darby. As we got older, Aunt Mary and her friend Sister Therese (who also became like an aunt to us) visited us at my parents’ house during the Christmas and Easter holidays.
Over the years, I helped Aunt Mary move to different convents including St. Francis De Sales in Philadelphia where I was baptized and where Aunt Mary stood as my Godmother.
Aunt Mary’s last assignment was working at Immaculata University. Because of her influence, my two sisters and my daughter are all proud Immaculata graduates. My sister, Mary, has fond memories of sharing many lunches with Aunt Mary in the Immaculata cafeteria.
For the past 10 years, my wife and I have driven from Florida to visit Aunt Mary at Camilla. My sister, Mary, my mom, and Sister Therese (when she was still with us), visited her as well. I

Sister Ann Marie Harrison, our Aunt Ann, was born and spent her childhood with her brothers at Lake Winola in rural Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. Her brothers lovingly referred to her as “the princess.” They both had memories of how she was always the first to get the hot Saturday night bathwater while they waited their turn! The siblings had a special bond and were lifelong best friends.
Aunt Ann had a quiet and restful demeanor, and no one has a memory of her raising her voice. Deeply devoted to Mary, she leaves behind a legacy of poetry and study devoted to “Mary, Beloved of the Trinity” which is stored in the Motherhouse archives.
Well known as the family photographer, we would wink and roll our eyes as Aunt Ann quietly but firmly arranged her brothers, nieces and nephews, and grand-niece and nephews as
learned from the Camilla sisters that Aunt Mary and I have one thing in common – chocolate!
Our family misses Aunt Mary. We are still mourning the loss of our mother who passed away three months shy of her 99th birthday. Aunt Mary would always ask how our mother was doing. Now Mom and Aunt Mary can be together in heaven and reminisce about the times they shared.

I have many fond memories of my Aunt Mary growing up seeing her at my grandparents’ house over the holidays and at their swimming pool during the summer. When I was around five years old, I recall seeing her and Sister Therese in their bathing suits, but I didn’t go over to say hi because I didn’t recognize them out of their habit! That gave them a good laugh! When it was time for me to look at colleges, Aunt Mary tried to persuade me to go to Immaculata. She finally wore me down. I visited Immaculata and fell in love with everything about the school. Thanks to her, it was the best decision I ever made. I graduated with a degree in secondary education and my first teaching job was at Sacred Heart in Manoa where she had been missioned for a time. When I opened a restaurant in Avalon, NJ, she and Sister Therese came for long lunches whenever they were in Stone Harbor. I loved it when they visited. Aunt Mary was proud of her family and tried to help them in any way that she could. I will be forever grateful.

she took the photos. Today, we still chuckle at the memories and many of those photos are treasured family history.
When Aunt Ann visited her young nieces and nephews, she often arrived with a craft project to share. We made terrariums, Christmas tree ornaments, arranged silk flowers, and played board games. Looking back, we realized these activities were a way for her to slow down high energy youngsters (one brother had six children, the other four). We had many conversations about school, activities, hopes and dreams while our hands were busy with an activity.
Aunt Ann was always a peacemaker, a habit she learned from her own mother. When we would scrap among ourselves, Aunt Ann would gently remind us that someday all we would have would be each other. How right she was. Once, sitting down to dinner, a grandnephew loudly declared “I HATE spaghetti!” Aunt Ann lightly placed her hand on his arm, and softly explained that hate is a strong word. She reminded him that the dinner was prepared for him with love and that words like that hurt feelings. Instead, she suggested that he use the phrase, “That’s not my favorite,” and quietly eat the parts of the meal he enjoyed. That phrase is a staple in our family to this day.
Aunt Ann did not simply practice her vocation; her vocation was who she was. We are all better people for having known and loved her.

When I reflect on times spent with my sister, JoAnn, I am awed by her many talents and achievements throughout her lifetime. She was a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and trusted confidante to many. But, most of all, she was a devoted IHM sister who celebrated her vocation for over 70 years. Throughout the years, she answered to many names, among them were JoAnn, Josephine, Josie, Sister Marie Raymond, and Sister Josephine Kase.
During her academic years at Central Catholic High School in Reading, she was a member of the varsity basketball team, valedictorian of her senior class, May Queen in her senior year, and vice president of her class.
When asked why she chose to return to St. Joseph’s Parish in Reading, PA to celebrate her jubilee, she said it was there where she received her vocation to the IHM order. I remember the

A few years later, our brother, Rob, was born. Mary was the one who broke this exciting news to me about his arrival. She was so special to me. Soon after, our family moved back to Ardmore, and when the rules became more relaxed, Mary had permission to visit us. She was so kind and generous, and would always be there to help with the cooking, cleaning, and decorating, especially at Halloween. She was fond of all holidays and everything Irish and often marched in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. She never forgot a birthday and celebrated all special occasions with us. Mary enjoyed a glass of white wine, parties, and dancing. She even invited and entertained my young daughters with sleepovers at her convents.
My sister received advanced degrees from Immaculata University and St. Charles Seminary and held important positions in many different parochial schools. She was devoted to her students, and many came back to see her years later.
As time went on, I felt closer and closer to her. We started to meet every Sunday for lunch. She sometimes had no filter and would say things that would make me laugh so hard!

day she left our home to enter the convent. The IHM sisters at St. Joe’s gave me the day off to accompany her on her long and rewarding journey into a new life of service to others. During her years of teaching and administration in various schools, she and I shared many thoughts on Catholic education. My time spent as a deacon in the Allentown Diocese brought us closer as sister and brother.
JoAnn always looked forward to coming home to Reading where she was treated to her favorite Berks County meal of pork and sauerkraut with mashed potatoes. Many family members often received tokens of her love at family celebrations such as weddings, baptisms, and birthdays. She always took time to ask about the accomplishments of our extended family of nieces and nephews.
In her later years, as her health was waning, she never let her illnesses get in the way of her devotion to God and family. Visits were spent with conversations about the latest family happenings. Her quiet demeanor was a joy to behold. We always knew we could go to her with daily problems. She was a person whose non-judgmental advice will be sadly missed.
While there are so many things we could say or write, we would have to say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” May you rest in peace.

Sister Miriam George Kelly went to the Lord in a state of grace on February 13, 2024. She was born on May 12, 1927, in West Philadelphia to George and Elizabeth Kelly. She had one sibling, a brother, George Francis Kelly, Jr. He was married to Jean Kelly. Sister “Georgie” was an amazing aunt to three nieces, one nephew, three great nephews, and one great niece.
She was a very special person who was always full of joy and positivity and always lending an ear to anyone who needed it. Throughout my life, Aunt Georgie was my mentor, friend, counselor and disciplinarian. Having an aunt who was an IHM sister meant going to Catholic school and knowing that all the sisters at your school knew your aunt. This was a major incentive to behave.
Along with the unconditional love she had for her family, Aunt Georgie’s real passion was teaching. She often told me how she never had a bad day at work and her “little ones” made her
Sister Maureen James, better known to us as “Aunt Joan the Nun,” was such a beautiful example of love and prayer for our family.
Born in West Philadelphia to James and Marie Lilly, Aunt Joan had one sibling (Jimmy), along with countless aunts, uncles, and cousins. A graduate of West Catholic High School for girls, she entered the convent in 1949.
Aunt Joan was always in contact with her family and was a true matriarch. Many of our memories go back to the 1950s, 60s and 70s from our trips to the convent on Easter Sunday and her visits to our childhood homes. She was our loving support and was always down to earth and non-judgmental. All generations respected, loved, and admired her.
One memory that stands out to me was when Aunt Joan came to visit us in Drexel Hill in the 1960s. As children we called Swiss cheese “holy cheese” because of the holes in it. As a child I didn’t like the taste of Swiss cheese, but when Aunt Joan visited us, I didn’t want to disappoint her. I was about five years old at the
full of joy every day she was with them. Sister George shared so many fun stories about her students. The warmth she showed when telling us these stories was an amazing testimony to the love she truly had for her profession.
Aunt Georgie was blessed with a large extended family. So many of the children she taught and their families stayed a part of her life from generation to generation. This made her life very fulfilling. Another joy was that she spent several weeks each summer at what she called her “summer home,” Villa Maria by the Sea. It was a place she treasured and being able to sit on the beach each day to get a suntan was an added bonus.
Sister Miriam George lived an amazing life. Teaching her little ones at several parishes, then teaching preschool at Immaculata (which I had the opportunity to visit several times), and working in the financial office at Immaculata University –these were all the things that she loved. There are several things in her life that I know she cherished along with her family –her love for the children she taught and their families and her fellow IHM sisters whom she treasured. She told me on several occasions how blessed she was to have the life she had and how grateful she was to know that she would always be taken care of by her community – and she was.
I miss her every day.

time. Despite gagging, I ate the cheese to impress her because I thought the cheese was “holy!”
Aunt Joan never forgot a birthday. You could always count on getting a card with a heartfelt message. At Christmas, the presents were many.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Sister Ellen Anne, her faithful companion. They were “two peas in a pod,” always together until Aunt Joan’s passing into eternal life.
Aunt Joan was a teacher, principal, and superior at many schools throughout the Philadelphia Archdiocese. West Philadelphia was probably her favorite location, especially St. Rose of Lima School, her childhood parish.
Her vocation was always first and foremost. Her first assignment was at Annunciation Parish in South Philadelphia and her last assignment was in the library at Little Flower High School. She even taught Mayor Michael Nutter, her “prized pupil,” whose respect and admiration for her continues to this day. She touched countless students and lives. She was 92 years young. She truly loved her vocation and it showed.
Aunt Joan radiated joy, contentment, and love. It was contagious. She was a true IHM sister. It’s hard to put into words our love for her. That love will continue in our hearts forever. We love you, Aunt Joan. May you rest in peace.

Mary was so many things to so many people. She was a daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, mentor, and most of all a friend to everyone that was blessed enough to know her. She saw the good in everyone as well as being able to bring out the best in others.
Mary was born the sixth of eight children to Frank and Betty Maguire on May 3, 1937. She was a beautiful baby with a cute smile, dimples, and a twinkle in her eye, all of which were hard to ignore from the day she was born. An older sister (Marie), four older brothers (Jim, Frank, Jack, and Vincent), and our grandmother were so excited to invite another girl into our family. She soon became the favorite of her aunts and uncles.

Three days before her 90th birthday, Sister Roberta Marie Mattox went home to God. Born on May 2, 1934, as Elizabeth May Mattox, she was known as Betty or Aunt Betty by her family. She was more than a sister to her siblings and aunt to her 16 nieces and nephews; she was our companion, confidant, advisor and teacher as she was to those she met throughout her ministries. Later, as a resident at Camilla Hall, Sister Roberta became all these things to her fellow religious sisters and everyone she met at Camilla. All experienced her warmth, wisdom and grace. She had “people skills.”
She was the eldest of four children of Robert and Elizabeth Mattox, and as a child, she enjoyed playing “nun” with her dolls using her mother’s scarves as veils. While attending West Catholic High School for Girls in Philadelphia, she discerned her religious vocation and entered the IHM Congregation in February 1953. By the fall of 1955, she was teaching at St. Thomas More in Arlington, VA and for the next 30 years taught at schools throughout Philadelphia and the surrounding area.
After five years she was joined by Joanne and six years later another sister, Judy. Mary grew up in Germantown and went to St Vincent DePaul Grade School and Little Flower High School.
When I think of Mary, I always smile. As a teenager, she worked at the Acme in Wildwood, NJ every summer. For fun, when she wasn’t working, she was at the beach or jumping off the bridge in the back bay. That came to a sudden stop, when my mother found out. Mary loved rollercoasters and was never afraid of an adventure. The only ride I remember her not liking was a ferris wheel. When I was out playing, and mom wanted me home she would tell Mary to call me. She would whistle for me, and I could hear her a block away. Mary could whistle better than any of my brothers and most boys in our neighborhood.
Mary had a special relationship with each of her brothers and sisters. Thirty-one nieces and nephews call her Aunt Mary.
Whether at a Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, wedding, ordination, graduation, summer cookout, Christmas parties, a trip to visit family in Virginia or Florida – it didn’t matter the occasion or the place - Mary was always with us enjoying her time spent with family and friends.
I love you, Mary.

From 1986 through 1989, she served in the kitchen at Camilla Hall.
After receiving a degree in Religious Studies from St. Charles Seminary, Sister spent five years at St. Anastasia Parish as the Director of Religious Education, followed by two years in the same position at St. John of the Cross Parish in Roslyn, PA. For the next thirteen years, she worked as a Pastoral Care Minister to the people of St. Athanasius Parish where she enjoyed preparing older converts for their first sacraments. Assignments at Our Lady of Charity Parish in Brookhaven, PA and St. Francis de Sales Parish in Philadelphia followed. Her assignment at Little Flower High School for Girls as receptionist and part-time switchboard operator lasted for nine happy years. She loved the students, and they loved her right back. She always had a bowl of candy on her desk for the girls, the mail carriers and all visitors. In February 2021, she left Little Flower due to health issues. She joined the Apostolate of Prayer Community at Camilla and continued her spiritual mission. Sister Roberta peacefully went to God on April 29, 2024.
Throughout her life’s journey, Sister Roberta touched the lives of those she met with warmth, wisdom, and grace. Family, friends, fellow sisters, coworkers, students and parishioners were grateful recipients of her “people skills.”
May God bless her loving soul.

Sister Marita Jean, (“Aunt Patsy”) was a warm, God-loving person. She was an activist, a lover of God’s poor, possessed a wonderful sense of humor, and had a great love for family and friends, especially her IHM community.
Sister Marita Jean taught for years in inner city schools. Her students adored her and learned much. As a basketball star in high school, she loved the game and taught many boys and girls in the city how to play.
Aunt Patsy was an advocate of social justice. Whenever she learned of an injustice, she was willing to act to make things right. At Camilla Hall, a picture of Dorothy Day hung in her room. She was someone Patsy admired.
Her love for those lost and suffering was always present. After teaching all day, Aunt Patsy volunteered in the evening at a shelter for the homeless, treating them all with the dignity they deserved.

Sister Mary Angela Menna, lovingly remembered as Aunt Rie, was the oldest daughter to Anthony and Antoinette Menna. She was devoted to her parents.
She always aspired to be a sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She had a sister (Mildred, 15 months younger) and a brother (Francis, who became a priest). She always wanted to play school with them, and she had to be the teacher. She wore the rosary on her belt loop like the sister’s habit was in those days. She was a determined, organized, and intelligent woman. She knew her dream and aspired to reach her goal. She gave her heart and life to Jesus.
Aunt Rie was a devoted aunt to all her nieces, nephews, 22 great-nieces and nephews, and 40 great-great-nieces and nephews. Aunt Rie’s joy was attending all the family functions she could. She was always present at weddings, birthday parties,
Maxis Center, an outreach center in the basement of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Philadelphia. She believed that by providing for a person’s physical needs, a door would open to evangelize. She did everything with a welcoming manner, a smile, and a twinkle in her beautiful eyes. The center gave food to the hungry, clothing, and household necessities to anyone who came for help. Patsy, Sister Rita Martin, and Sister Maureen James Lilly provided much-needed resources to all who entered their center. Her faith and love of God were always the driving forces.
Aunt Patsy ran the center as she lived her life – always attuned to people’s immediate needs, doing something about it, and then trusting God to provide. She was focused on what she could do to make someone’s life better or easier.
“Hey Sis” was her signature greeting and it soon became our greeting to her in return. She made every person know how special they were. Watching her interact with people was truly an inspiration. She treated all with the dignity they deserved as children of God. It didn’t matter who you were or what you did, she would let you know how special you were to her.
Aunt Patsy was the embodiment of igniting others’ flames. You couldn’t be around her and not feel inspired to do better and be better.
She was my heart and I miss her every single day.

and any holiday affairs. Her devotion and prayers were felt by all. She always kept her family close. Her prayers and simple teaching in her everyday dialogue were an inspiration for all of us. Her faith was shared openly with us and continues to impact each of us today.
Aunt Rie was a talented musician and taught violin for a few years in high school. I (Miriam Unruh) had tried to follow in her footsteps, and she gave me special instructions whenever she came to visit. Her love of music was passed on to many of her family members.
Aunt Rie touched our lives in many ways but most profoundly by her unceasing faith. We were all blessed to have such a faithfilled woman in our family. Her example of patience, humility, and charity in her everyday life was an inspiration. We loved her dearly and will miss her encouraging words and prayers.

“Aunt Susie,” Sister Susan Joseph, IHM, was a shining example of what it means to serve a higher purpose. It was her calling to take care of others, guiding them on a path to happiness and fulfillment. We were privileged to have her as our guiding light.
Aunt Susie was very artistic. She arranged the most beautiful flower arrangements. She got that gift from her dad, Joseph. She always helped in the flower shop and many stories revolve around her working there and supporting the local community. She showed us how to do floral arrangements, marked our height measurements on the shelf posts, and tried to teach my grandfather’s dog, Rambo, to bark “I love you.” She was always having fun, even at work.
Aunt Susie was good at everything! One minute she was teaching us math or how to arrange flowers and the next showing off her skills on the basketball court. A lot of our memories revolve around our time at Our Lady of the Valley, Our Lady of the Angels, and Marian Catholic High School.

On June 9, 1939, John and Hildegard Schuyler were blessed with their second of four daughters – Hildegard Amelia Schuyler. She was welcomed home by her older sister, Mary Jean, who was delighted to have a live “baby doll.” Hildie was an early talker. The name she gave her big sister was “Mo em.” Daddy was not happy having a daughter being called by the nickname given to the Battleship “Missouri” so somehow it was changed to Modge (now S. Regina Joanne, IHM) and to many still known as Modge.
Hildie enjoyed getting big like Modge, going to grade school, playing, riding her bike, attending Girl Scouts, etc. She soon followed Modge to high school at Villa Maria Academy where Hildie was class president all four years and very active in all student and school activities.
Hildie decided by her senior year of high school that she
She knew everyone in those schools by first and last name. It impressed me how invested she was in the students and the well-being of the teachers and administrators. When we went to middle school, we were thrilled to learn that Aunt Susie would be our principal! This was a huge change from holiday dinners, feast days, and birthday celebrations with Aunt Susie. We got to see her excel professionally. She was kind, compassionate, and stern when necessary. Our friends loved Sister Susan; she influenced so many to do better and made quite the impression as our principal.
As we grew up, our family went separate ways. My older brother and sister lived in different states, and I moved out of state soon after high school. Aunt Susie made sure we always stayed in touch. She had an amazing ability to send a birthday or holiday card that would arrive on the EXACT date. She never forgot to check in on Sundays, tell us she loved us, or just remind us that she was thinking about and praying for us. She took care of us. No matter how far away we were, or whatever we needed, she would find a way to help.
She called the IHM sisters her friends, but they were her family too. The virtues Aunt Susie taught us will ensure her legacy lives on forever. Realizing she isn’t just a phone call or text away is hard, but we know that she is looking out for us, and we can still check in every Sunday. We love you Aunt Susie!

wanted to have a family and be a nurse so she could be of service to all. She applied and was accepted at Gwynedd Mercy Nursing, trying to push down the feeling that she may have a vocation. Shortly after graduation, she told daddy that she wanted to go to the IHMs for six months only to prove to herself that she didn’t have a vocation. He was surprised especially since she failed religion one semester in junior year. He said, “Nobody does anything for only six months!” (He reminded Hildie of this on her 50th anniversary as an IHM.) Hildie was professed and sent to Virginia to teach for 18 months. She then entered nursing school and the rest of her time was spent at Camilla.
Hildie will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, selflessness, big hugs, and tight hand squeezes! She was most interested in making you feel heard, needed, valued, seen, cared about, and loved. She had a way of remembering what you needed, wanted, who you needed prayers for, and had access to a magic “Christmas closet” where she could find just what you needed in the nick of time. She was devoted to her family and all the Camilla sisters, and we are so fortunate she touched our lives! I believe we have our special saint in heaven, rooting for us, watching over us, and loving us as we keep her in our prayers.

Sister Janice, whom I called Jan, was my older sister. Born on July 14, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, Jan was the oldest of three children of Wallace and Opal Sobczak. Jan lived in Michigan until the late 1950’s when our family moved to Miami, Florida.
Jan was always a happy and cheerful child who loved school and helping others. She attended church and school at St. John the Apostle School in Hialeah, Florida. From a very young age, Jan wanted to become a nun. While attending St. John’s School, she worked part time in the rectory, helping in the office. After St. John’s, she attended Notre Dame Academy and that is where she made the decision to become an IHM sister. Jan graduated in June 1965 from Notre Dame Academy, and we had our last full family vacation that summer. Afterwards, she planned to start her initiation in the Congregation but was prevented from arriving on time in Pennsylvania due to Hurricane Betsy hitting the Miami area. She was the last to arrive in her band.

Geraldine was the “Pope” of our family. She had very high morals. If you did something wrong, she would write a letter or make a phone call and let you know her feelings. Naturally, she was always right. Gerry was a great storyteller. She often came home and told us about her driving experiences which made my dad laugh. We had lots of fun helping Geraldine set up her classrooms each year. She was smart and we could call her for anything, and she was always willing to help. We were very lucky to have a sister who helped us be good Christians and love Jesus.

I was five years old when Geraldine entered the IHM Congregation. Geraldine was there when we got married and had children. She liked having babies around, enjoyed watching the kids grow, and attended many weddings. She taught students
We visited Jan a few times during these first three years and really enjoyed those trips. After profession, Jan taught elementary school. One of her assignments was in Georgia where my brother and his family resided. They were able to visit her often. Jan always stayed in touch with our family and we visited her as often as we could. I loved getting her letters telling of her life in the convent and of her teaching assignments.
Jan was eventually assigned to south Florida ministering at Epiphany Parish and at St. Rose of Lima. As our parents were aging, Jan was able to have an extended stay in Miami and became a hospice chaplain. With Jan’s help we took care of our parents until they both entered eternal life in 2010. Jan continued to work as a hospice chaplain until the IHM sisters closed the St. Rose of Lima location in North Miami and then moved back to Camilla for her final assignment.
We were grateful for the opportunity to take one last vacation with Jan to Michigan to visit with extended family. Our families also had the opportunity to visit Jan before her passing. All of us have fond memories of our last visits with our sister.
Jan was a kind and caring person who showered her love on everyone she met. Our family misses her very much.

from first through third grade and often stayed in contact with them over the years. She instilled kindness, was always willing to lend a helping hand, and had almost perfect morals. She is missed by so many and is now with so many in heaven. I know Pop and Mom are happy as are all the siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends as well as her great friend, Sister Judy Moeller.
Brian Timlin
My first memories of Geraldine have always been of her as a sister. I was 18 months old when she entered the Congregation. I remember visiting her in the convent. Over the years, these trips were a BIG deal. When Geraldine was able to come home that was a big deal too. My dad, my brother, and I would go and pick her up. All the sisters were so nice to us when we visited. They were happy to see our family and I’m sure exhausted when we left! Most kids in school thought that a sister was “born” a sister, but I knew they were real people, so I was not intimidated. Sometimes that got me in trouble. All the sisters knew Gerry and if there was something she needed to know about me, they would tell her. Then Gerry would call mom! We love Geraldine and miss her.

Sister Virginia Catherine Varallo, or better known as “Ginger,” “Ginny,” or “Aunt Jeanne,” depending on which sister, friend or family member you asked, was incredibly loved by those around her from her family to the school children she taught throughout her career. A native of Delaware County, Virginia was the daughter of Louis J. and Kathryn (King) Varallo and the younger sister of Louis J. Varallo, Jr. Raised in St. Charles Parish, Ginny immediately took to her classes becoming enthralled by reading and learning from the sisters who taught her. She entered the IHM Congregation in 1954 after graduating from Hallahan High School and was guided by her passion for service and love of learning, making education a cornerstone of her vocation.
For more than 60 years, she devoted her life to teaching students in different capacities within and beyond the Diocese of

Our “Aunt Agnes,” Sister Maureen Rose, the youngest girl and last survivor of 10 siblings, was born in the Grays Ferry neighborhood in Philadelphia and attended St. Gabriel School. She was a force of nature with a huge personality. At family gatherings, she was often the center of attention, regaling us with schoolroom stories which would keep us laughing for hours. For celebrations at our grandmother’s house, she would sing. She had a beautiful voice. Her favorite song was “Till There Was You” from The Music Man. She brought her love of music to her students by putting on musicals. Her love of music was infectious, and she enjoyed sharing this with them.
At Easter, the entire family, dressed in our Sunday best, would go to the convent to visit Aunt Agnes. These Easter visits continued with our own families. We also visited her many times in the classroom where she taught. This was something we always enjoyed.
Philadelphia. Her dedication to education also took her abroad to Chile where she spent time in Santiago and Osorno serving the community. Ginny’s love for positively impacting future generations extended to the time she spent with her family including helping to raise her six nieces and nephews along with ten grandnieces and grandnephews.
Anytime a new addition was born, she was one of the first to be knocking down doors to bottle feed and see the newest arrival. She also loved playing jokes on her nieces and nephews such as short sheeting her nephews’ sheets and playing card games like spoons. Her love for family was evident through the time she spent in Ocean City, NJ during the summer visiting everyone. Some of our fondest memories of her are on the water whether we were fishing, crabbing or just enjoying the sunshine and the bay together. She was present for every holiday from Easter to Christmas and imparted wisdom and humor to all of those around her as we enjoyed meals and gift exchanges together.
Although she has entered eternal life, her service and the legacy she left on those around her and future generations will never be forgotten by those she met and loved.

Aunt Agnes’ favorite place was Stone Harbor. She loved the shore and even volunteered to take care of the priests’ house so that she could spend more time there. One of her favorite pasttimes was bargain hunting at the Dollar Store, going up and down the aisles seeking treasures. When visiting her in Camilla, a trip to the Dollar Store after lunch was always on the agenda. Aunt Agnes loved Christmas! Every year she would visit with a huge bag of beautifully wrapped gifts. Everyone received a gift from Aunt Agnes, including her siblings and down to the latest addition to the family. No one was ever forgotten.
She had many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was interested in each one, and always more than willing to help them however she could. Aunt Agnes was a very special person; she was devoted to religious life, her family, her mother, and her students. She also had a special devotion to St. Theresa.
There is much more that can be said, but the truth is that we miss her. We know she is probably stirring things up in heaven and looking down on us.
The Waters Family
Our aunt, Sister Patricia Ann Wolfe (Sister Mark Marie), daughter of Mark and Nora, was the youngest in her family with two older brothers, Mark, Jr., and Bill. After graduating as Valedictorian of her class at Harrisburg Catholic High School, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Sister Pat spent her entire profession as a teacher in many locations throughout Pennsylvania including Reading, Downingtown, and Philadelphia as well as in Miami, Florida. Our Aunt Pat was highly respected within her community. She was dedicated to all her students throughout the decades and to the sisters with whom she worked and lived.
Sister Pat was always close to her beloved family, most especially her loving parents, her two brothers and their wives (Anna and Mary Lou), and all 13 of her nieces and nephews.
She was also close to her best friend, Sister Miriam Margaret Mathews, IHM, with whom she lived and worked for many years. Sister Miriam became an unofficial member of the Wolfe family.
Aunt Pat loved attending her family’s special events such as weddings, baptisms, and milestone birthday celebrations. Her devotion to her family and friends was genuine and unconditional. Aunt Pat always remembered her family members with birthday and anniversary cards with beautiful personal messages enclosed. We all cherished those cards from her. Through the years, Sister Pat kept many letters that her parents sent to her that expressed the love and pride they felt in her choosing the life of sacrifice and dedication to which she was called.
Sister Pat was a woman filled with faith and love for her family and for everyone she met. She always found the good in people and quickly dismissed their faults. She was a great listener who always made it clear that she cared about you and what was important to you. Our dearly loved Aunt Pat left us with a beautiful and lasting example of a life well lived that inspires us to do our best. She will always be remembered in our hearts. This world was a better place with her in it.
