This blend of perspectives is more than community life. It’s our own ever-expanding neighborverse.

If you’re a fan of Marvel, then you’ve probably seen Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Another example is Everything Everywhere All at Once, which follows a Chinese immigrant as she navigates a multiverse of parallel worlds. All these films explore the idea that countless realities exist side-by-side, each shaped by different choices, relationships, passions and possibilities.

Just as the multiverse explores infinite realities, our neighborverse reflects the many dimensions of community life in Issaquah Highlands.

Every neighbor brings a unique world of experiences, cultures and ideas.

In a community filled with many worlds of experience, one reality belongs to a family in West Highlands Park who spent their lives until now in true concrete jungles. The Yoo family has lived in Chicago as well as Seoul, where nature is something to visit and not something that surrounds you.

Moving to our neighborverse last June opened an entirely new dimension for them. After years without so much as a squirrel in sight, suddenly their Ring cameras were capturing deer, coyotes, bobcats and even the occasional bear.

Their journey reflects just one of the diverse worlds that make up Issaquah Highlands, each defined by our histories, values and daily experiences. The multiverse trend extends beyond portals and superpowers, inviting you to wonder what life might look like through someone else’s eyes.

Every neighborhood, park, trail and gathering space in our community functions as its own small “realm,” which shapes how you connect and participate in daily life. These places hold entire worlds of their own, where routines form and relationships develop over time.

One realm that exists within our community is Ashland Park. The newly renovated playground transforms into its own universe on weekday afternoons when the Montessori school gets out across the street.

Kids of different backgrounds, cultures, curiosities and personalities gather at the playground. Parents and grandparents mingle at the edge of the park. To someone passing through, it might look like a simple after-school stop. But to the families who return every day, it’s a realm of growing friendships.

When neighbors take the time to listen, share, volunteer or simply show up for one another, you’re essentially stepping into someone else’s world.

Our individual realities in Issaquah Highlands evolve with every choice we make. Taking a risk, even a small one, can open the door to new connections. As the new year approaches, consider stepping into something unfamiliar.

Join an emergency preparedness workshop at Blakely Hall to strengthen your readiness knowledge and meet neighbors with similar interests. Stop by a community group like ADHD Caregiver Support Group to connect with neighbors experiencing the same achievements and challenges. Explore Grand Ridge Park’s trail system, where you can enjoy the outdoors while crossing paths with neighbors who share the same routine.

Our neighborverse thrives on connection. It grows stronger when people choose to learn from one another, celebrate differences and embrace the diversity that gives Issaquah Highlands its character.

Together, we’re living in a universe that keeps evolving through our shared experiences.

A Legacy of Reliability JEREMY FALLT HFN General Manager & Westridge Resident

This year, we proudly honor Pine Crest resident Charlie Herb as our 2025 Volunteer of the Year, a recognition earned through his calm leadership, generous service and longstanding commitment to Issaquah Highlands.

Charlie embodies what it means to be reliable. He shows up prepared, engaged and ready to solve problems, a quality that has helped Highlands Fiber Network (HFN) navigate important decisions for more than two decades. His influence is mirrored in the network’s latest upgrade, which allows residents to benefit from the same reliability Charlie has championed for years. Learn more about the upgrade on pages 64-65.

Charlie has been a guiding force on the HFN Board of Directors for the past 12 years, since the community purchased it from Port Blakely in 2013. Prior to that, he joined HFN’s advisory group upon moving into the neighborhood about 22 years ago.

That move marked the beginning of a defining chapter for the Herb family. In 2003, Charlie and his wife Lisa moved to Issaquah Highlands to put down roots and begin growing their family.

At the time, less than 500 homes had been constructed and new businesses were just starting to pop up.

“We were drawn to the community by Port Blakely’s vision of an urban village concept, which included the promise of a diverse community; numerous parks, trails and open spaces; a future school, hospital and shopping center; and a state-ofthe-art fiber network,” he said. “We’ve really enjoyed watching that original vision become a reality over the years we’ve lived here.”

All four of their children were born here and raised in Issaquah Highlands. The Herbs found comfort in the area’s open spaces, spending countless hours hiking and biking the local trails. Charlie said they’ve always appreciated the community’s walkability and easy access to parks, especially as their kids grew older and eager to explore the neighborhood on their own.

Charlie’s early involvement with HFN began soon after settling into the community. He remembers seeing “lots of residents around the table” at early advisory meetings. At the time, the internet wasn’t built to support the community’s growing needs, and reliability issues were a regular challenge, he said.

“It’s been a long journey,” he noted. “There have been points of frustration, but I never wanted to end my service [to HFN].

If anything, it kept me going.”

Looking back, Charlie is especially proud of helping negotiate the purchase of HFN from Port Blakely, a process that included gathering input from neighbors through community forums to better understand their priorities for local ownership. He also takes great satisfaction in being part of hiring HFN’s first general manager, Frank Pineau, followed by me in 2020.

Sometimes it’s the decisions that you don’t make that end up being the most important. Charlie’s thoughtful approach to decision making has allowed HFN to avoid some huge pitfalls in the past. HFN’s solid foundation today—both from a network perspective as well as financially—is due in large part to avoiding the wrong decisions at critical moments. His consistency in service to HFN provides an invaluable perspective on the network and the decisions made over the years.

The Herbs enjoy exploring our local trails, walking and biking around the community, and watching the community continue to grow.

He explained that giving your time becomes even more meaningful when you find joy in it.

The Hills Are Alive, With the Sound of…

Issaquah Highlands certainly has a bit of Sound of Music vibes. You can almost see Julie Andrews at Grand View Park, twirling around and singing in her dress made of curtains. Sound plays a significant part of my memories over the years in Issaquah Highlands.

I’ve had the pleasure of living on Park Drive for 20 years now.

Living on the main road into the neighborhood puts you in the middle of all the sights and sounds. The chattering of kids walking to school in the morning, the emergency vehicles rushing up the hill, the showoff for the biggest and loudest muffler at 3 a.m. Not all sounds were pleasant, but they were certainly memorable.

In the early years, the sound I heard the most was construction.

The never-ending sawing, hammering and big trucks going up and down the hill…it was brutal. But, with so many construction workers around, Park Drive became a magnet for food trucks.

A taco truck started parking right in front of my house almost daily.

Once they were ready for business, they played a very loud trumpet fanfare to announce their arrival. A long line would quickly form, and you’d hear the lunchtime chatter and laughter.

Sometimes I wish I could hear that trumpet fanfare again and find myself just steps away from delicious tacos.

Another sound that was loud yet welcoming came from the Central Park bagpipe player. This was another moment straight out of a movie. Picture Central Park on a summer day—kids playing on the playground, maybe a deer or two nibbling on bushes, and there Andrew was, playing the bagpipes.

It’s not every day you see that incredible instrument, let alone hear it played beautifully in your neighborhood park. It made you stop what you were doing and listen in awe. It was surreal and majestic. Central Park bagpipe player, thank you for this memory and please consider coming back to play someday.

There’s a sound that still lingers these days, though it was far more prominent years ago: the coyotes howling in the middle of the night.

You used to hear many of them at once, sometimes for hours. My dogs were never fans, but I always thought it was a treat to hear the wild so close to home.

One of my favorite things about Issaquah Highlands is being just far enough from the city and just close enough to the wilderness. As much as I appreciate the convenience of new shops and restaurants in our community, I hope we continue to protect the nature around us. Those wild voices make our neighborhood unique, and the creatures who live here deserve to keep calling this place home.

Blakely Hall was constructed in September 2004.

One day, my very pregnant next-door neighbor knocked on my door and said she really needed quesadillas but didn’t have the courage to stand in line.

Truthfully, I was craving tacos as well.

We mustered up enough courage to join the line and immediately wondered why we hadn’t done it sooner.

HISTORY OF ISSAQUAH HIGHLANDS 1989-1990 Port Blakely, master developer of Issaquah Highlands, purchases 2,200 acres of vacant land in the Cascade foothills to build an urban village.

1995-1996 Port Blakely receives approval for a multi-phased, mixed-use development and construction begins.

Port Blakely deeds over 1,500 acres as permanent open space, including Grand Ridge Park.

Ashland Park, the first community park, breaks ground.

1997 Port Blakely establishes the Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA), building a governance structure and development standards and procedures.

2003-2004 Residents move into multiple phases of single and multi-family homes.

Port Blakely establishes Highlands Council to foster the development of a vibrant and caring community.

The I-90 Exit 18 interchange, Eastside Fire and Rescue Station 73 and Central Park (Phase I) open.

Building the Budget: IHCA Prepares for the Year Ahead The Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA) is gearing up for another year of planning and progress.

KRISTYN MCKINNON Right now, the IHCA Accounting IHCA Finance Manager Committee is putting together the 2025-26 budget that supports the community assets, services and upkeep we rely on every day.

The Finance Committee is made up of Issaquah Highlands homeowners who volunteer their time to help guide our community’s financial planning. Appointed by the IHCA Board of Directors (BOD), these members work closely with staff to shape a recommended budget. The budget comes together through a proactive process that relies on financial expertise, familiarity with community and legal requirements, and a commitment to preserving communitywide standards.

As part of the budgeting process, the Finance Committee must consider many factors, including: • Protecting the value of all homeowner investments within Issaquah Highlands.

• Maintaining the quality and safety of our shared community spaces.

• Ensuring efficient planning for future community needs.

The Finance Committee evaluates the funds required to cover the community’s day-today operations, such as electricity, irrigation water, landscaping, management, insurance and general maintenance. These expenses are either fixed through contracts or can be reasonably forecasted from prior experience.

Additionally, the committee reviews the income needed to maintain the reserve fund at sufficient levels. Reserve funds provide money for the repair and replacement of community assets like playground equipment, drainage infrastructure and irrigation supplies.

Armed with this knowledge, the committee projects total expenses for the coming year and compares them with the association’s anticipated revenue from assessments, investment interest and shared-cost income.

They also explore ways to reduce costs without compromising services and identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency. At the same time, the annual budget must comply with federal, state and county regulations for nonprofit associations and account for any economic or operational challenges that may arise.

Once the BOD reviews and approves the budget in late February, it will be published in the spring issue of Community Connect magazine for residents to view. The IHCA Budget Ratification Meeting will take place in-person at Blakely Hall in April 2026. In accordance with state law and the IHCA Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&Rs), ratification is automatic unless 75% of all members vote to reject the budget.

In large, planned communities like Issaquah Highlands, home maintenance goes beyond appearance. It plays a vital role in risk management. Neglected exterior elements such as deteriorating roofs, clogged gutters, unmaintained siding and poor drainage can lead to water intrusion, structural damage and even liability issues.

Across the country, homeowners associations (HOAs) are depending more on the results of homeowner maintenance inspections to inform reserve studies, guide insurance underwriting and support lender evaluations. Simply put, the condition of individual homes directly impacts the overall risk profile and financial health of the entire community.

IHCA Crews Bring New Life to Parks, Community Spaces As the seasons shift, our Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA) crews have been focused on readying the community for winter, enhancing community assets and cleaning up from recent windstorms.

At the top of the IHCA’s summer to-do list was a complete remodel of the Ashland Park play structure and surrounding area. The renovation features a brand-new toddler playground with rubberized ground tiles, creating a safer and more comfortable surface as opposed to the previous wood chips.

A full renovation of Ashland Park is on the horizon as part of the IHCA’s long-term planning process to revitalize numerous parks in Issaquah Highlands. More information about the Ashland Park project will be made available soon.

In the near future, there is a plan to remove and install brand new basketball hoops at Firehouse Park. The community will be notified of details, including any park closures, before work begins.

Planting improvements in common areas, streetscapes and supplemental neighborhoods will continue through winter. Damaged streetscapes throughout the community will be refreshed with new ground cover and bark, and streetscape tree pits will receive fresh bark to promote tree health and improve water retention. Crews will also be replacing storm-damaged trees throughout the community.

All improvements are completed with the goal of ensuring Issaquah Highlands remains a beautiful and welcoming place to live.

When not replacing play structures, the IHCA crews have been busy maintaining common area assets such as benches and trail lights.

Most park benches have been repainted to revitalize their appearance, and any benches not completed this year will be assessed next summer when the warm weather returns. Additionally, all benches in common area now sit on concrete pads. These pads will help boost longevity of the benches, preventing rust and other damage.

Common area trail lights have also been revitalized with a fresh coat of paint, providing longevity and aesthetic value. At Firehouse Park, two concrete pads have been installed at each entry to the basketball court, offering easier access to the court. A bench was also added outside

Prune Your Trees to Prevent Winter Damage

During our Northwest winters, storms often bring powerful gusts that can push our native trees to their structural limit.

As a tree service that cares about the safety of our community trees, we usually get called after damage has already been done—torn gutters, branches on roofs, or full emergency removals that require heavy equipment to extract safely.

Though sometimes these situations cannot be avoided, proactive pruning can greatly reduce the chances of limb or structural failure.

Wind, coupled with our typically heavily saturated and rainy winters, creates a very tough situation for our trees to face.

Preventative pruning can help strengthen a tree’s structure and set them up to better withstand such adverse conditions. This can include: ● Climbing to inspect the condition of the tree ● Installing cables to help stabilize weak or compromised branch unions ● Removing dead, dying or diseased limbs ● Removing crossing limbs, or those with weak attachment points These preventative practices will help your trees stand up to wind, while also supporting their long-term health and strength.

Ensure Proper Building Clearance A commonly overlooked advantage of preventative pruning is keeping safe clearance around your home. Branches that get too close to decks, roofs or siding can become damaging levers in strong winds.

Overhanging limbs can scrape shingles, pull and dent gutters and break windows. They can also trap moisture and debris against your home, creating conditions that allow moss or mold to form. In addition, limbs near eaves or rooflines can provide a bridge for rodents, increasing their available options for getting inside your home.

The healthiest relationship between trees and buildings comes from maintaining proper space between them.

Grand Ridge Drive Nears Completion

City Council Approves Bellevue College Extension

The Grand Ridge Drive neighborhood is nearing completion, with only a handful of lots remaining. Of the 40 total lots, 32 homes are finished.

Three are currently under construction, while one is in the permitting process with King County. The final four lots are expected to begin or complete construction within the next five years.

On Nov. 10, 2025, Issaquah City Council voted 4-3 to extend the development agreement with additional requirements for the Bellevue College parcel located off Falls Drive behind Grand Ridge Elementary.

High Street Collection Starts to Take Shape Shelter Holdings, also known as IHIF Commercial, continues construction this winter on the project at Discovery Drive and 9th Avenue Northeast, where crews are preparing for 77 townhomes, 210 apartments and a 55+ senior living community.

As part of the 21.5-acre site, work has started on a 37-unit townhome project at the corner of Discovery Drive and Deer Lane, adjacent to the Westridge community. In November, infrastructure improvements along Discovery Drive were completed as planned.

Additionally, Shelter Holdings has started building a new park on the southwest side of the property, adjacent to Northeast Discovery Drive and the West Highlands Park neighborhood. This will be an active work area over the coming months as crews complete grading, utilities and site features for the future park space.

Bellevue College purchased the 19-acre parcel in 2011 with plans to build a satellite campus featuring multiple academic buildings.

Shifting enrollment, increased online learning and high development costs have prompted the college to rethink its original campus plan.

The decision came after feedback at the City Council meeting, where Issaquah residents expressed concerns about the site’s future, including educational needs, community density, emergency evacuation routes and the ongoing need for affordable housing.

The extension gives Bellevue College two additional years to evaluate development options and gather input from the community. Stay tuned for opportunities to provide feedback!

It’s important to note: The IHCA provides architectural oversight for any construction in Issaquah Highlands, collaborating with developers and the City of Issaquah to guide all future development.

Student Nonprofit Boosts Career Readiness, Supports Local Businesses

While most high schoolers were busy juggling their homework, school activities and social lives, Magnolia Park resident Riya Jonnala decided to take a different route. Rather than focusing solely on her school responsibilities, she devoted her time to building something greater—a nonprofit that empowers local youth with real-world experiences while supporting small businesses.

What started as a small volunteer booth has evolved into Youth4LOCAL, a nonprofit helping more than 350 students develop interview skills, build resumes, collaborate with businesses and explore career paths.

Where the Idea Began The idea wasn’t born in a single moment. Through her experience as a taekwondo instructor and DECA leader, Riya discovered that students often excel academically but struggle with confidence, professionalism and communication skills. She said teachers and students alike realized that academic knowledge alone isn’t enough to prepare them for the future world of work.

To create change, Riya joined forces with classmates Ava Datta and Nitya Shankar. (Nitya now attends University of Washington, while Ava is a senior at Issaquah High School alongside Riya.)

The first project they undertook was assisting the City of Issaquah with its “Issaquah Loyal” booth at Salmon Days. She said the goal was very easy—encourage buying local and give volunteers the opportunity of community interaction.

The effect, however, was as fast as lightning. Students were energized by the real-world work. Business owners welcomed the support.

Parents wanted to hear about the next chance to get involved.

That energy turned into Youth4LOCAL, which launched in summer 2023.

A Nonprofit Built on Real Experience Youth4LOCAL believes in a very simple principle: young people develop their skills best through practical work.

Rather than teaching business scenarios through classroom roleplaying, the organization offers students direct exposure to companies with actual needs. Bootcamp, the nonprofit’s main program, is designed to facilitate the partnership of teenagers and local businesses for valuable projects.

The benefits are clear for the students and the businesses, Riya said.

Students obtain real-world experiences, develop real skills and gain achievements in their resumes that make them more attractive to employers and colleges.

As a result, businesses gain new ideas and ready-to-implement projects.

It is a mutually beneficial system, which is partially why it’s so effective.

Building from the Ground Up Riya said the nonprofit’s early days were challenging. Emails to businesses went unanswered, students didn’t know the organization existed and early outreach efforts failed to reach interested teens.

However, Riya viewed Youth4LOCAL as a long-term effort rather than a quick school assignment. She designed a detailed outreach strategy, started social media activities, collaborated with teachers and refined her presentation to local business owners.

Over time, the organization went from flying under the radar to standing out in a big way.

Now, businesses are responding. Students are signing up without prompting. Parents are asking for ways to get their children involved.

What began as a trial has evolved into a community learning hub for all.

Leading Through Uncertainty As director of outreach for Youth4LOCAL, Riya took on responsibilities she had never faced before—emailing business owners, scheduling student meetings, explaining career concepts to middle and high schoolers, and answering questions even when she didn’t have all the answers.

“It wasn’t always easy, but that was the point,” she said.

Riya’s leadership was instrumental in building a nonprofit that addresses the community’s real needs while equipping students with the confidence and real-world skills employers often find lacking.

Her message to youth in the community is straightforward: “Be okay with not knowing all the answers about the future [and] embrace every moment and interaction of your life as an opportunity...Even if it doesn’t seem like it, your next great opportunity could be hiding in something completely unexpected.”

THE LENS ON LACROSSE High School Filmmaker Captures the Game and the Communities Behind It A single camera started it all. What began as filming game highlights for a few friends quickly grew into a journey that took Vista Park resident Dylan Ryan from Washington sidelines to lacrosse fields around the world.

Dylan, a senior at Issaquah High School, has raised the bar for filming the sport of lacrosse. He began his filmmaking career by creating game highlights to help his friends get recruited for college.

After posting his work on Instagram, Dylan gained several hundred viewers. His skill quickly garnered the interest of many clubs, schools and athletes in the area, leading him to get hired by the Washington Lacrosse Organization (Walax).

His content consists of energetic Instagram Reels with color-graded game highlights, helping individual athletes and entire programs get recognized.

“All and all, it was the hardest project I worked on, but it’s definitely my favorite,” he reflected.

After gaining so much experience, Dylan is already thinking about the future. He plans to continue filming in college, and he is searching for schools with thriving sports programs and internship options that can help him grow even more.

Dylan leaves young creators with this guidance: “My best advice is to just pick up a camera and use it. Filming can really open up your opportunities to being creative.”

Recently, Dylan joined the Mercer Island Lacrosse Club in supporting Lacrosse the Nations (LTN), a global nonprofit that strives to improve children’s health and education through the game.

LTN opened the door for him to film in Columbia, marking his first international project.

While the kids were immersed in learning lacrosse from the players, Dylan said they were also drawn to his filming. He describes this as the “most touching moment” from his travels. The children were eager to hold the camera and have him capture photos and videos of them, he added.

“I had to constantly repeat ‘cuidadoso,’ which means careful in Spanish,” Dylan said. “Of course I was worried about handing over an expensive camera rig, but it was all worth it to see how happy these kids were.”

While Columbia was an exciting experience for Dylan, it also came with its own challenges. Instead of creating his usual short-form reels, he was tasked with producing a 23-minute video focused on LTN’s mission and Colombian culture—not just game highlights.

Each day involved four to five hours of shooting, and the final edit took about 50 hours to complete. Dylan said the process taught him much about filming, organization and workflow.

BLOWING THROUGH THE COMPETITION Teen Triumphs in International Whistling Competition While most people whistle casually, Forest Ridge resident Nikitha (Nikki) Kondapi has transformed the playful pastime into a skill worthy of international acclaim.

Nikki, a sophomore at Issaquah High School, recently competed in the Masters of Musical Whistling SAAHIL JAIN international competition in Highlands Youth (HY) Hollywood, where a youth division Advisory Board & Magnolia Park Resident was introduced this year for the first time ever. She was one of only eight young performers invited to compete, and her dedication to the art of whistling shows what it takes to turn an unusual talent into a real craft.

Nikki has been whistling since she was seven years old. While she doesn’t recall what sparked it, she remembers that it started as a fun trick she could do with friends. Whistling wasn’t a serious pursuit at first, but once she realized she had a talent for it, she began to lean into the skill. She would whistle while folding laundry, doing homework and even in the shower.

With world-class whistlers judging and her family watching proudly, Nikki delivered a standout performance that earned her first place in the youth division.

Nikki said one of the biggest surprises was seeing how many adults had traveled from around the world just to compete. She quickly realized the whistling community was larger and more passionate than she thought. While talking to others, she learned that many whistlers face criticism and struggle to be taken seriously.

“If someone was competing, I would tell them to ignore all of the backlash and focus on themselves and their music, because that’s essential for them to succeed,” Nikki said.

Looking ahead, Nikki hopes to continue growing as a performer. She is thinking about auditioning for an upcoming competition in Japan, and she plans to stay connected with the whistling community she has built. More than anything, she hopes her experience will help young people recognize whistling as a legitimate art and feel empowered to explore their own unique talents.

Since the age of 10, Nikki had dreamed of competing on large platforms like America’s Got Talent (AGT). However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, those plans were put on hold. While looking back into AGT auditions, she came across the Masters of Musical Whistling and decided to step up for the exposure and learning experience. She auditioned virtually over Zoom and earned a spot to compete at the world-class event in Hollywood.

Even though Nikki has a natural talent for whistling, not everything came easily. Reaching higher notes and maintaining proper breath control were two major challenges she faced. Instead of giving up, she set aside time each day to experiment with different mouth positions and practice consistently. On the day of the competition, it took a great amount of finesse and control to whistle continuously for four minutes, she said.

She chose to whistle the song “Speechless” from Aladdin, sung by Naomi Scott and composed by Alan Menken. Aladdin has always been one of her favorite films, and she has always admired Princess Jasmine for refusing to be silent and standing up for her own choices. The song’s musical complexity made it an ideal piece to show the full range of her ability. She wanted to prove that whistling is an art form, not just a “useless” talent.

Nikki recently performed at the Masters of Musical Whistling in Hollywood, where she took home first place in the youth category.

DREAM BIG! Elementary Student Becomes Published Author It’s not every day that a neighbor becomes a published author, especially one who hasn’t reached middle school yet.

This past fall, Daphne Park resident Myra Puthuraya published her first book at 10 years old. “Dream a Big Dream” is a collection of short ANISHA ARASU stories designed to motivate kids to Highlands Youth (HY) chase their goals with courage and Advisory Board & determination. Inspiration Rooted in Real Experiences

middle school made the process very demanding. Still, she found enjoyment in the process.

“It was something fun that I got to spend my time doing,” she said.

Myra enjoyed illustrating the book, using her artwork to bring key moments in the story to life. She credits her parents for helping her through the process, especially her dad, who helped with editing and publishing.

The book came together in about two months, wrapping up in September 2025.

Giving Back Through Her Words Instead of keeping the profits from her book, Myra pledged to donate all proceeds to the Seattle Humane Society, a nonprofit close to her heart.

For Myra, the decision to begin writing came from a desire to help others. She wanted to inspire other kids to achieve their dreams.

“I really love animals, and I think they deserve the same amount of help as humans do,” she said.

She began by creating her characters, then built the story around them. Piece by piece, the book started to take shape.

Myra’s generosity shines just as brightly as her storytelling. Beyond writing, she enjoys creating art, playing piano and spending time with her friends and younger brother.

Just as her characters do, Myra knows what it feels like to have her dreams questioned. Each story tackles the real challenges kids face—self-doubt, adult skepticism and the courage it takes to stay true to yourself when the world pushes you toward conformity.

By grounding these themes in everyday situations, she makes her stories relatable to kids everywhere.

“I wrote this book for people who said their dreams weren’t possible,” she said.

Her stories remind readers that failure is part of the journey, not the end. By weaving in themes of bravery, Myra encourages kids to pursue their goals with resilience and confidence.

Looking ahead, Myra is excited to hear from her readers and hopes to inspire kids everywhere to keep chasing their dreams.

“Everyone out there has something they want to achieve, and to achieve those goals, we must be brave,” she added.

Geared toward young readers ages 8–12, the book inspires confidence while offering parents stories that celebrate being yourself rather than chasing perfection.

New Year, New Goals

HY BOARD MEMBERS REFLECT ON YEAR AHEAD Happy New Year from the Highlands Youth (HY) Advisory Board! As we say goodbye to 2025, we wanted to recap some of the amazing events we hosted this year.

We kicked off the year with our annual Big Game Watch Party, which drew a great crowd and plenty of excitement. In April, we celebrated Easter with the Middle School Flashlight Egg Hunt, where teens raced to collect eggs at Village Green Park. Join us for this year’s watch party on Feb. 8, followed by the egg hunt on April 3!

Tvisha Shah I can’t wait for the snowy season! We don’t usually get much here except for a few days in February, so I’m eager to see how much falls and enjoy the winter weather when it arrives.

Jeric Yuen Anisha Arasu In 2026, I’m mostly excited for the first snowfall. I want more days spent outside making everlasting memories with my friends and family, whether we’re sledding, taking photos or making snowmen. I’m also hoping to set resolutions that are ambitious yet realistic, putting my best foot forward for the new year.

I can’t wait for the FIFA World Cup! Soccer is one of my favorite sports to watch, and the World Cup brings all my favorite players together to compete for the trophy. And with the tournament happening in North America this summer, it will be so much easier to watch the games.

My goal next year is to explore a potential career path after high school. As I approach senior year, I plan on finding a passion that I can pursue in the future. I enjoy STEM fields like physics and computer science, so I hope to continue those interests!

Arjit Singh For my New Years resolution, I want to stop procrastinating on my schoolwork. I’ve realized that I delay it far too often, and I want to get better at finishing assignments early.

I am looking forward to growing as a person and having some fun while I do it. I also want to try a few new things that push me outside of my comfort zone. Overall, I just want 2026 to be enjoyable and to face any challenges with more confidence.

Noah Meckstroth In 2026, I plan to focus on keeping my grades up and exploring new areas on my bike. Also, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for snow in January so that I can go skiing.

Haley Lim I’m eager for the start of my high school tennis season.

Tennis is fun and inclusive, and the coaches are always helping players improve. I’m also looking forward to my Taekwondo black belt test because I’ve been working hard to earn it. I really hope that I pass and my efforts pay off.

I’m excited for the exhilarating feel of college decisions! As a senior, a big part of this year is experiencing these emotions. I feel nervous, but I’m also looking forward to it. This year also brings fun senior traditions like prom, senior sunset and more!

Nikhil Khatwani I am excited for recreational winter activities, such as sledding and skiing. I can’t wait for the World Cup, which will be taking place during the summer of 2026.

This year, I’m really hoping for lots of snow!

I’m also looking forward to starting track and field and setting new resolutions with my family.

Nikitha Kondapi Shaurya Behera I am excited to finally clear some space to draw, leaving room for scribbles and sketches wherever I can. Once my first semester finals are over, I’m planning to fit in as much art as I can before going back to work.

Saira Hashmey I’m hoping to graduate and attend college at UW in 2026! I’m ready for a change of pace and for the next phase of my life. Crossing this milestone is a big step, but I’m grateful to have my family supporting me along the way.

I’m looking forward to flurries of snow, but I’m also excited for a fresh start! I love making New Year’s resolutions because it gives me the opportunity to truly ponder how the past year went as well as what strategies worked or needed improvement.

Local Youth Make Big Impact

Eight Teen Volunteers Earn Community Impact Award

Highlands Council is thrilled to recognize eight local teens for their outstanding service to the community in 2025. These middle and high school students, who will be recognized at a special ceremony on Jan. 11, contributed over 1,260 hours of service to Issaquah Highlands and surrounding communities last year.

The Issaquah Highlands Community Impact Award is a new recognition that celebrates volunteers of all ages who strengthen our neighborhood through acts of service and meaningful contributions. This award is being offered in place of the President’s Volunteer Service Award this year, which is currently paused by AmeriCorps. Award level requirements vary by age category of the applicant.

This year’s recipients from Issaquah Highlands include:

Grace Rich, Gold Awardee (Young Adult) Grace recorded an impressive 343 hours serving our community last year, including 180 hours volunteering with the Issaquah High School (IHS) sports medicine program.

Now a senior, she continues to make an impact with the Highlands Youth (HY) Advisory Board as well as Girl Scouts of Western Washington.

“Volunteering has led me to become a leader and strive to help others around me.

I have gained confidence and empathy while working to support my community,” she said.

“Through being on the [HY] Board, I have learned teamwork and collaboration in our monthly meetings of planning events. In my time outside of school, learning how to rehab and evaluate athletes has taught me patience, understanding and communication.”

She credits her volunteer experience with sparking her interest in medicine and helping those around her.

Lily, a sophomore at IHS, volunteered 223 hours with local organizations over the past year. She has invested over 155 hours in serving the Issaquah Highlands community, a commitment she carries forward in her current role as vice president of the HY Board.

A freshman at IHS, Anisha devoted 156 hours to community service throughout the past year. About 100 of those hours were dedicated to the HY Board, where she currently serves as one of the secretaries.

This past summer, she stepped up to co-lead the Global Grub & Groove celebration of Indian Independence Day, serving as an emcee alongside fellow HY Board members.

Outside of the HY Board, Lily volunteered with younger Girl Scouts at Sammamish Day Camp. She also continued her service with the Issaquah Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), regularly participating in and supporting emergency drills.

“I will always remember my experience volunteering with kids,” Lily said. “I particularly enjoy volunteering at Girl Scout Camp as a camp counselor because it’s really fun to work with the same group of girls for a week, lead fun activities with them and get to know them.”

“Volunteering has significantly improved my communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills,” Anisha shared.

“When volunteering, things usually don’t go exactly as planned, and I’ve come to learn that it’s okay. Sometimes, we have to put our heads together to come up with a new solution, and that solution may turn out to be better than expected.”

Outside of the HY Board, Anisha volunteered more than 50 hours supplying meals to people at shelters through the VEDA Annapoorna Program.

Haley Lim, Gold Awardee (Teen) Haley logged 140 service hours last year supporting the Issaquah Highlands community and Girl Scouts of Western Washington. As a sophomore at IHS, she took on greater responsibility within the HY Board by serving as one of the secretaries this year.

She also returned to Sammamish Day Camp over the summer to guide Girl Scouts through hands-on activities, as she does every year.

“Volunteering is quite fun and pushes me to exceed my social boundaries,” she said. “In the HY Board, I have been learning how to present my ideas and notate on the ideas of others. With Sammamish Day Camp, I’ve learned how to manage and entertain groups of children of different ages.”

Saahil Jain, Silver Awardee (Teen) In his first year on the HY Board, PCMS eighth grader Saahil dedicated 76 hours of volunteer service to the Issaquah Highlands community. He played a major role during the summer Global Grub & Groove celebration, co-leading and emceeing the event in front of more than 500 neighbors.

“As a member of the HY Board, I’ve learned a lot about myself,” he said. “I used to think leadership and confidence had to come first, but I’ve realized it’s actually the other way around. When you’re truly passionate about something, confidence follows and everything else just falls into place. Volunteering has also pushed me into situations outside my comfort zone, yet I’ve found out that’s where real growth happens.”

Nikhil Khatwani, Gold Awardee (Teen) Nikhil, an eighth grader at Pacific Cascade Middle School (PCMS), recorded 108 hours between the Issaquah Highlands community and the Goddard School last year. About 75 of those hours were spent volunteering for youth events with the HY Board.

“Volunteering has taught me patience, empathy and the importance of consistency.

I learned how to better adapt my style of communication and instruction to get different age groups with various attention spans to work harmoniously with each other,” he noted. “Overall, I would say that volunteering has had a huge impact on my life, making me positive and helping me mature. It has also taught me to be a leader.”

At the Goddard School, Nikhil served as a monitor during lunchtime and read books to young children.

“I’ve learned that our community can only be strong if everyone believes in the community and wants to be a part of it.”

Last spring, Saira completed the 30-hour Issaquah CERT basic training course at Blakely Hall. After the course, she continued to participate in emergency preparedness trainings and drills across the community.

Avik Sitani, Gold Awardee (Teen) A freshman at IHS, Avik devoted 106 hours to community service over the last year, with 100 of those hours dedicated to the HY Board. Over the summer, he helped spearhead the Global Grub & Groove celebration of Indian culture as a co-lead, supporting the event from initial planning to day-of execution.

“Volunteering has had a tremendous impact on me. It has shown me that even small acts of service can have a huge effect on the greater community,” he explained.

“Working with groups of all ages has allowed me to connect and understand their needs.

Volunteering on the HY Board especially has allowed me to grow as a person and develop crucial skills that will help me in school and beyond.”

Outside of the HY Board, Avik volunteered for events with the City of Issaquah and Grand Ridge PTSA.

To be considered for the 2026 award, volunteers must complete the required number of service hours between Sept.

1, 2025, and Aug. 31, 2026, with a majority of service dedicated to the Issaquah Highlands community.

Welcome to the Team—Betty Lee! I’m thrilled to introduce Betty Lee, the new community engagement coordinator at Highlands Council. A longtime Issaquah Highlands resident with a passion for community, Betty brings to our team a wealth of experience and knowledge from working in the parks and community services field.

In her new role, Betty will be managing most of our 50+ events each year. She will also coordinate with our community group leaders and assist with our social media.

Outside of work, Betty is the proud paw-rent of Chewie, her Yorky-Pomeranian. She loves watching and playing sports, taking advantage of the area’s outdoor activities and making music (she plays nine instruments!).

LINDSEY PINKSTON Highlands Council Executive Director & Wisteria Park Resident As we welcome 2026, let’s take a moment to reflect on our successes from the past year.

Highlands Council hosted 65 community events, including exciting first-time gatherings such as Ladies Singo Night, Movie on the Green, the Puzzling Challenge and our End of Summer Community Picnic.

We also supported residents in launching five new community groups at Blakely Hall and made a major transition from Connections newspaper to this beautiful glossy magazine, bringing community information and stories to life in a fresh new format.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to continue building community with you in the neighborverse. This year, you can look forward to a continuation of the Are You Ready? emergency preparedness workshop series, two movies at Village Green Park this summer and a variety of other programs designed to build connections.

From all of us at Highlands Council, we wish you a joyful new year filled with friendship, good neighbors and meaningful community connections.

Cultivating Community: Garden Season Approaches

As the new year begins, Highlands Council and the Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA) are preparing for another successful gardening season. Our neighborhood is home to 170 garden patches spread across three locations: Vista, Sunset Walk and Westridge.

The Vista Gardens, located along the paved path between Park Drive at Trail Head Vista and Natalie Way, were the first gardens established in Issaquah Highlands. With slightly larger patches than other sites, seasonal fees are $150 per patch.

Across Park Drive from Fire Station 73, the Sunset Walk Gardens feature raised concrete beds and cost $125 per season.

The Westridge Garden, at the corner of Westridge Southeast and 6th Avenue Northeast, also offers raised concrete beds and two ADA-accessible patches. Seasonal fees are $125 per patch.

January is the renewal period for current gardeners, who will receive email notices to secure their patches for the 2026 growing season. In February, any available patches will be offered to those on the waitlist. Interested in joining the community garden?

Resilience Hub Progress Report We are pleased to share that Blakely Hall is now equipped with backup power, giving us the capability to serve the community during a power outage. Thanks to Highlands Fiber Network (HFN) for allowing us to use their generator, essential power needs at Blakely Hall can now be met.

While the entire facility cannot be powered, the generator supports key functions such as: • Lighting in select areas • Restroom facilities

Finding Friendship Through Her Time A Women’s Group Designed to Spark Connection, Conversation and Support

In September 2024, I had never heard of Issaquah Highlands.

By mid-November, I was a thrilled owner and resident in Crofton Springs. I had found my dream home in my dream community.

Fall turned to winter, and winter turned to spring. I settled into my cozy new place. My dogs and I explored our new neighborhood daily. I was so pleased that everyone we passed gave a friendly greeting or smile. I remember thinking, “I belong here.”

This was my place, now I just needed to find my people.

We had our first meeting at Blakely Hall last fall. I quickly discovered that other women in Issaquah, just like me, were looking for meaningful friendships and fun experiences.

A dozen of us showed up to that first meeting!

People shared that they attended because they wanted to create a sense of community for themselves. They would like to experience everyday connections where you run into friends while shopping or exchange a friendly wave as you pass each other in the neighborhood.

The consensus was in—we all want our neighbors to be our friends. The Her Time community group is paving the way for those relationships to grow!

We also shared our thoughts on self-care.

Many of us admitted that it often falls to last place on our to-do lists as there always seems to be someone or something that we see as more important than our own needs.

We came to realize that being in that room together, talking openly, was actually self-care in action.

If you’re a woman looking to make friends, share meaningful conversations, participate in fun activities or simply spend time in a space that belongs to you, Her Time is designed for you.

Hoping to meet some of my fellow Issaquah Highlanders, I attended a New Neighbor Social at Blakely Hall. I chatted with a few nice people, and more importantly, I learned that any resident could use Blakely Hall for the purpose of leading a reoccurring community group. Armed with this information, I realized I could be the solution to my own problem…and hopefully help some other women in the process.

I contacted Highlands Council to discuss my idea. I explained that I was a relatively new resident and struggling to find ways to meet local women with whom I could build a sense of community. Because of this, I wanted to lead a monthly event where women

Calm & Connected A New Year, A Deeper You

After giving so much of ourselves during the holidays, what many of us need most isn’t another goal but a quiet moment to breathe, reflect and appreciate how far we’ve already come.

When the calendar resets and life asks us to begin again, the start of a new year can stir mixed emotions.

There is hope and possibility, but also pressure. We tell ourselves we should be setting goals, making resolutions and improving something about ourselves.

Reflection is one of the most powerful practices we can offer ourselves. It is the art of pausing long enough to notice the small victories, the lessons learned and the ways we have grown through challenges that once felt impossible.

Looking back with compassion allows us to see that even in times of stress, fear or uncertainty, something meaningful was taking shape within us.

Think about a moment this last year that once felt heavy. Maybe it was a decision that did not go as planned, a relationship that shifted or an unexpected detour. Now, with time and perspective, can you see what it revealed or strengthened in you?

Perhaps it brought greater patience, resilience or clarity about what truly matters.

When we take time to reflect, we remember that we’ve faced challenges before and found our way through them. Growth often hides in discomfort, and every challenge carries the potential for wisdom. This awareness becomes a steadying force, a reminder that we can meet the future with confidence and grace.

Set aside a few minutes to sit quietly and let your mind wander through the months behind you. Instead of focusing on what you did not accomplish, notice what you did. Think back on the ways you showed up for yourself and others, or how you adapted, healed and kept moving forward. Even subtle progress counts.

Reflection is not about rewriting the past; it’s about recognizing how life has shaped us. When we see our experiences through this lens, gratitude naturally follows. We begin to trust our ability to handle what comes next, knowing we have done it before.

As you step into the new year, release the pressure to do more or become more. Begin with gratitude for the strength that carried you this far. Trust that your goals and dreams will unfold in their own time, guided by a peaceful knowing rather than urgency.

Take a moment to look back and honor the path that shaped you. You may find that what once felt uncertain has become the foundation of your growth, and that is something worth celebrating.

Brighten Up Your Winter with Houseplants Washington winters can feel gloomy. It’s easy to fall into the seasonal slump, but there’s an easy solution to bring a little life and light back into your home— houseplants!

Despite the misconception that houseplants can be too difficult to maintain, I’m here to share five easy-to-grow plants to bring home this winter that will not only thrive indoors but also brighten up any room with fresh, cheerful energy.

I hope this quick guide inspires you to pick your next houseplant this winter! While plants can seem intimidating at first, many are surprisingly low-maintenance and easy to handle. They add instant color, life and a touch of joy to any room. Happy planting!

PHILODENDRON

Starting off with one of the most common houseplants, the Philodendron is simple to care for indoors and boasts hundreds of species. Their bright green color easily brightens up every space. Many varieties naturally trail downward, making them perfect for hanging pots or high shelves. Philodendrons are super simple to propagate*. Be sure to fertilize them once every month in the spring and summer.

Sunlight: Philodendrons flourish in bright, indirect light, but they can also adapt to lower-light areas, making them ideal for homes where sunny days are scarce. Avoid direct sunlight.

Water: Water about once a week, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. You will know your Philodendron is thirsty when its leaves begin to curl slightly.

Toxicity: These plants contain calcium oxalate crystals, which may cause irritation to humans and pets if ingested.

DRACAENA TRIFASCIATA

Next up is the Dracaena trifasciata, better known as the snake plant. This hardy houseplant is perfectly suited to Washington’s dim winter days, thriving in low to moderate light and requiring very little care. These plants are also super easy to propagate. Snake plants live long due to their ability to endure tough environmental circumstances.

Sunlight: Snake plants prefer indirect light. They tolerate low-light corners better than most houseplants, making them perfect for spots away from windows or in rooms with filtered light.

Water: These plants can go long stretches without water. Water every 2–4 weeks, allowing the soil to completely dry out between waterings to prevent root rot*.

Toxicity: It contains compounds called saponins that can cause mild irritation if ingested by humans or pets.

*Key Terms: • Propagate: This refers to cutting a stem from the original plant in order to grow a new plant of the same species.

• Root rot: This is a condition caused by overwatering, which damages the plant’s roots and can ultimately lead to its death.

AGLAONEMA

Another easygoing favorite is the Aglaonema, commonly known as the Chinese evergreen. With its striking mix of red, pink and green hues, this plant instantly adds color and warmth to any room. Varieties with darker leaves thrive in lower light, while those with lighter green tones appreciate a bit more brightness. These plants also love humidity, so consider placing yours near a small humidifier or in a bathroom where it can soak up the extra moisture.

Sunlight: The Chinese evergreen enjoys low to bright indirect light. Their flexibility makes them an excellent choice for nearly any room, from softly lit corners to well-lit living spaces. However, avoid placing them in direct sunlight.

Water: Allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings, typically every 1–2 weeks. During the winter months, you may need to water even less frequently. Always ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.

CHLOROPHYTUM COMOSUM

Next is the spider plant—a classic that never goes out of style! Known scientifically as Chlorophytum comosum, this houseplant has thin, ribbon-like leaves with crisp white borders that brighten up any room. They grow quickly and look stunning in hanging baskets. Plus, they constantly sprout new plants, making them perfect for sharing. Spider plants also double as natural air purifiers, keeping your home feeling fresh year-round.

Sunlight: Spider plants prefer light shade or indirect light. Avoid bright, direct light as it can burn the leaves.

Water: A light watering about once a week is typically sufficient, though this may vary depending on indoor conditions. These plants can be sensitive to overwatering. Fluoride and chlorine can also damage their leaves, so distilled water or rainwater (or tap water that has rested out for 24 hours) is gentler on their roots.

Toxicity: This plant is safe for humans and pets.

ZAMIOCULCAS

Our final plant is the Zamioculcas, commonly refererenced as the ZZ (Zanzibar Gem) plant. This resilient houseplant is famous for being nearly indestructible, making it perfect for anyone looking for a low-maintenance option. Its glossy, dark green leaves add a touch of elegance to any space, and studies show that ZZ plants can help purify indoor air by reducing common pollutants.

Sunlight: ZZ plants can adapt to many different light settings, making them great for Washington weather! They prefer bright, indirect light but are also capable of surviving in very low-light areas. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the leaves and cause damage.

Water: Let the soil dry fully between waterings and resist the urge to water too often. A light watering every few weeks is usually all they need.

Toxicity: ZZ plants contain compounds that can be irritating if ingested by humans or pets, potentially causing nausea or discomfort. Keep them out of reach of curious children and animals.

Energizing the Future:

PSE Announces Reliability, Capacity Upgrades for Issaquah

BY PUGET SOUND ENERGY

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is upgrading Issaquah’s power grid to provide more reliable energy to homes and businesses, while increasing the electric capacity for the entire community.

To do this, PSE is building a new substation in Issaquah Highlands.

The substation, named Grand Ridge, is part of the original Issaquah Highlands master plan and will deliver power through an underground distribution system. Placing electrical wires underground improves reliability by removing the risk of outages caused by falling trees or branches.

Issaquah needs more reliable power: Customers in Issaquah Highlands experience longer and more frequent power outages than others in our area. This can be attributed to the current grid layout and substation locations, along with dense vegetation, which can fall on overhead power lines and lead to outages.

Issaquah needs access to more energy: As Issaquah has grown, more people are using more energy. We serve about 40,000 residents and businesses in Issaquah, and while customers are doing their best to conserve energy, it is not enough to meet increasing energy needs — particularly during high demand times.

•E xperiencing fewer outages: We will pull the new power lines through existing underground electrical conduits installed years

ago in anticipation of future needs.

Undergrounding lines typically improves aesthetics, results in lower vegetation management costs, and reduces power outages from falling tree limbs.

•H aving a more flexible and resilient power grid: With a fifth substation, we can redirect power along additional pathways during outages or periods of high demand. This helps in a situation where power is lost, giving PSE another option to reroute power to those without.

• Being closer to the point of energy distribution: Energy from the new substation doesn’t have to travel far underground to reach residents in Issaquah Highlands. This will cause fewer disruptions from outages elsewhere in Issaquah.

We plan to build the new substation within the existing PSE-owned easement located near the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) transmission corridor. A short transmission line, also within the PSE easement, will connect the new substation to the BPA corridor. The site is located on Park Drive, near the Vista Gardens.

We’re addressing Issaquah’s energy needs with reliable, long-term solutions.

This ideal location allows us to: • Connect the transmission to the substation in just a few feet.

• Make minimal changes to the surrounding area, including fewer impacts to trees and vegetation.

• Easily shift load capacity from other substations since it’s located at the center of the grid.

• Use existing conduit from the site to install the new underground distribution system in most locations. This will cause fewer construction impacts.

What’s Next?

We are currently in the project design and permitting phase. PSE will continue to update community members in Issaquah Highlands as the project moves to the construction phase.

FROM THE CITY A Message from the Mayor Charting Issaquah’s Next Chapter

I still remember my first visit to Issaquah Highlands in 2005. I knew we had found our future home when I discovered a community that combined access to the outdoors, walkable retail and a great elementary school.

Issaquah Highlands might be the largest homeowner association in the State of Washington, but it still feels like a small village to our family. I love taking the dogs for a walk in the woods and seeing friends and neighbors who are also enjoying our amazing access to the forests of the Issaquah Alps.

I was proud to be the first Issaquah Highlands resident elected to Issaquah City Council in 2009, followed by the Washington State Legislature in 2012. I ran for City Council with a vision of breaking down the silos where Issaquah Valley residents tend to think of Issaquah Highlands as a separate community.

As the new mayor of Issaquah, I promise to continue this work of making all residents citywide appreciate our common bonds. Highlands Council hosts an amazing Juneteenth event along with the best Christmas tree lighting ceremony on the Eastside. As mayor, I look forward to making sure all Issaquah residents know about these fun community gatherings.

It’s not often that you find small business owners getting elected to public office. I owned Zeeks Pizza on Park Drive from 2009-2019, and I still own Ben & Jerry’s in Grand Ridge Plaza. I’m committed to ensuring the City of Issaquah supports Issaquah residents who want to start a small business. I know firsthand the difference it makes when you find a city that collaborates with future small business owners. Starting a business is difficult enough without local government getting in the way.

My priorities as mayor include making smart investments to reduce traffic congestion, investing in our local parks, supporting our police and fire departments, and making sure that all city staff have a customer service mentality as they interact with Issaquah residents.

I believe that Issaquah is the best place to live in Washington, but I also feel that listening to new ideas from residents is the best way to make a great community even better. FROM THE CITY Your Public Art Collection:

A Closer Look at New Pieces and Changing Spaces Sculptures Come to Life

Ever wonder how public art comes to life? From large-scale sculptures to colorful murals, follow along as we showcase several new art installations that transform public spaces and foster creativity across Issaquah.

“Born from the Mother Tree” by local artist June Sekiguchi was recently installed in the enhanced Pedestrian Park and Senior Center Plaza. The process to implement two sculptures began over a year before their debut, following a call for art to complement the park project.

The City of Issaquah Arts Commission selected Sekiguchi’s submission through a blind review process in 2024. Sekiguchi, a former Issaquah resident and arts commissioner herself, pulled from the natural landscape of Issaquah. She found inspiration from the western red cedar tree for the design.

The final designs and placement of the new art were determined in partnership between Sekiguchi, city staff and the Issaquah Arts Commission. Once the designs were finalized, the fabrication and installation process began.

The installation was funded by a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission, which was awarded to the city specifically for this project. Brought to life during the park’s construction, the new art was revealed to the community in September 2025.

Missing the pieces you are accustomed to seeing near the Issaquah Senior Center?

In consultation with the Issaquah Arts Commission and Issaquah Park Board, three pieces will be given a fresh start in different public locations. In 2025, “River Run” by Craig Breitbach was moved to Salmon Run Park. Next, “Circle of Life” by Charles Smith will move to Confluence Park. “The Pillars”

by Will Robinson will be relocated in 2026.

Wayfinding Through Murals In another collaboration between the Arts Commission and Park Board, a new mural was recently completed at the intersection of Gilman Boulevard and Juniper Street.

The project was designed to help distinguish the three trails converging there: East Lake Sammamish, Juniper and Rainier trails.

With the new year often comes grand ambitions for eating better and exercising more! Why not rethink our idea of healthy living by considering how we cook our food and dispose of food scraps and waste?

In 2025, the City of Issaquah promoted the energy and health benefits of induction cooking through grants from the Washington State Home Equipment and Appliance Rebate (HEAR) Program and from the U.S. Conference of Mayors. The city provided free portable induction cooktops and cookware to renters, daycares and a teen center, and offered rebates to seven households.

Washington state may provide additional rebates in 2026, which the city will promote once available.

Why focus on induction cooking? Induction stoves and cooktops don’t use fossil fuels or release toxic pollutants into your home.

They use less energy than traditional electric stoves and give off less heat, keeping your kitchen cooler on hot days. Additionally, they are easy to clean and safer for kids since the surface doesn’t get hot.

When a steel or iron pan is placed on the cooktop, the magnetic field creates tiny electric currents inside the metal, heating it directly. This means the food cooks quickly while the stove remains cool. Induction stoves are also more efficient, converting 90% of energy into cooking heat, compared to 74% for electric and 40% for gas.

Induction cooking isn’t just fast and clean, it also protects your family’s health. Children living in homes with gas stoves face over 40% higher asthma risk and greater exposure to carcinogens.

Free Cooking Classes As part of our focus on making cooking safe and healthy for youth, we are collaborating with PCC to host cooking workshops in January to demonstrate how to use the new stoves. These workshops will teach kids about cooking skills, healthy food choices and meal preparation, mixing climatefriendly cooking into opportunities for community connections and fun.

Additional cooktops will be distributed in January during the series of induction cooktop workshops. Sign up for a workshop at bit.ly/issaquahcookingclasses and be eligible for a portable cooktop (as supplies last).

There are two main considerations when cooking with induction.

1. Induction needs a magnetic pan.

You can see if your current cookware is compatible by seeing if a magnet sticks!

If not, you may need to replace the cookware.

2. An induction stove or cooktop runs on electricity. Therefore, if there is a power outage, the appliance will not work or needs a backup power source.

While some gas stoves can be used when the power is out, you should ensure proper ventilation so that pollutants do not accumulate in the kitchen.

Ready to make the transition to induction?

Most appliance stores carry a range of cooktop and stove options. Check to see if Puget Sound Energy is offering rebates.

Washington state may also open up additional rebates for electrical appliances in 2026.

Food: Too Good to Waste Kick-off next month by participating in the city’s Food: Too Good to Waste initiative at bit.ly/issaquahfoodtoogood. Start by tracking how much food you throw away over the course of the month. By tracking your food waste trends, you will become more aware of whether you bought too much food, forgot about what you already had in your fridge, or if food spoiled before you were able to eat it.

As always, if you can’t eat something before it spoils, put food waste in your green curbside compost bin. Compost service is included for free with your garbage service and can help you downsize your garbage bin to save money! If you have leftover, edible food you no longer need, consider donating it to your local hunger relief organization to support our community.

Welcoming a New Year—and a New Face— in Economic Development

As we step into a new year filled with fresh possibilities, I’m grateful for the chance to introduce myself and share my excitement for what lies ahead. My name is Alexis Fitzsimmons, and I joined the City of Issaquah as the new economic development and housing manager last fall.

I moved to Washington from Ohio, and in just a short time, I’ve already begun meeting many of the incredible business owners, community members and partners who make Issaquah such a special place.

From my earliest conversations, I could feel the warmth, pride and thoughtful approach to growth that defines this community. Your welcoming spirit has made my transition to the Pacific Northwest both meaningful and energizing.

Supporting Our Business Community In the coming year, one of my primary focuses will be supporting Issaquah’s businesses—from long-standing local favorites to new entrepreneurs with bold ideas and growing companies looking for their next chapter. Each business contributes uniquely to the character and vibrancy of our city.

I’m eager to listen and learn from you. I want to understand what’s working well, where challenges exist and how the city can help create more opportunities for success. Whether you’re starting a business, expanding one or simply exploring a new idea, I’m here to be a resource and partner every step of the way.

Living Among Volcanoes

Understanding Our State’s Sleeping Giants and How to Stay Prepared You may have heard “rumblings” about an increase in seismic activity at Mount Rainier, indicating the movement of magma underneath a volcano—a sign that an eruption may be forthcoming.

Good news! These readings were most likely caused by a build up of ice on the JARED SCHNEIDER instrument antenna. But the concern Emergency Manager, serves as an important reminder that we live with five active volcanoes in our state.

City of Issaquah

Can you name all five? Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams are all active volcanoes with a high or very high threat rating by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Ashfall caused problems with transportation, water and sewer treatment systems, and caused damage to mechanical and electrical equipment. Interstate 90 was closed for a week and a half, and air travel was disrupted for multiple days.

Mt. St. Helens is still an active volcano, with the potential for future eruptions.

Fortunately, Issaquah is not in the path of a lahar zone—a debris flow composed of pyroclastic material, rocky debris, vegetation and water from melting glaciers. However, it’s important to know which areas around Western Washington could be affected. If a volcano does erupt near to you, seek higher ground as lahars typically follow the path of river channels.

The most likely impact for Issaquah residents is from ashfall. Volcanic ash is composed of microscopic shards of glass and irritants that can cause serious damage to respiratory systems. In the event of an eruption: • Stay indoors if ash is falling, with windows and ventilation systems closed until the ash settles.

• Wear respiratory protection, such as a face mask or damp cloth.

• Avoid driving as visibility will be poor and ash can damage engines.

• Keep roofs clear of ash, which can get heavy and cause structural damage.

Some long-time Washington state residents may remember the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980, which claimed the lives of 57 people, destroyed 27 bridges and 200 homes, and scattered ash as far as Oklahoma.

All of Washington’s volcanoes are closely monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. The City of Issaquah uses Alert King County, among other outlets, to inform its residents of any emergency that may impact you and your family. Sign up at issaquahwa.gov/alert.

Our volcanoes are part of the beauty that defines Washington’s natural wonderland. If you are prepared, there is nothing to fear!

Issaquah Police Data Reflects Ongoing Efforts to Keep Neighborhood Safe

As we head into the new year, it’s helpful to pause and reflect on the safety trends that keep us informed and proactive about crime prevention in our community.

Year-to-date statistics (Jan. 1–Nov. 23, 2025, compared to the same period last year) from the Issaquah Police Department (IPD) show an overall decline in Issaquah Highlands crime, though not every category moved in the same direction.

Issaquah Highlands reported a 21.1% decrease in total “Part A” crimes, which include offenses against persons, property and society.

Every major category decreased except for crimes involving people, which increased by 30.6% compared to the same time last year.

According to IPD crime analyst Ryan Smith, a majority of crimes against people are due to simple assaults. Data indicates that nearly

half of all assaults in Issaquah Highlands came from domestic violence-related calls. While domestic violence calls have risen 23.5% compared to last year, the proportion of assaults linked to domestic violence has remained consistent over time.

“Unfortunately, domestic violence is common, regardless of the neighborhood you live in,” Smith said.

The rise in domestic violence highlights the need for everyone to stay vigilant and involved. By looking out for neighbors, reporting suspicious activity and supporting local outreach efforts, we can help protect our community and prevent harm before it happens.

Property crime in the community fell 27.8%, but Smith cautions that the decrease is mainly due to a drop in reported shoplifting cases.

This doesn’t mean shoplifting has decreased significantly. Instead, nationwide corporate policy changes have led many retailers to report fewer incidents to law enforcement.

After shoplifting, the next most common property crimes were vandalism and fraud. The community has seen an 18% decline in vandalism, yet fraud cases have surged 82%, from 17 cases in 2024 to 31 cases in 2025. To avoid becoming a victim of fraud, residents are encouraged to safeguard personal information, verify suspicious communications and stay alert to potential scams.

As always, IPD encourages residents to call 911 for emergencies and the non-emergency line at 425-837-3200 for concerns that need officer attention.

Metro Flex Transit is Coming to Issaquah Highlands 2024–25 Pilot Program Metro Flex launched in 2024–2025 as a pilot program in Issaquah, designed to connect underserved areas like Talus and Squak Mountain with the valley floor and broader transit services.

Starting in 2026, Metro Flex will provide a flexible way for Issaquah Highlands residents to get around town, with the service area extending to Central Park. This change builds on a successful pilot and responds directly to community demand for more convenient, affordable connections to transit, schools, jobs and shopping.

What is Metro Flex?

Metro Flex is King County Metro’s on-demand, app-based shuttle service that operates locally for the same price as a bus fare. Riders are picked up and dropped off at chosen locations, not just fixed bus stops, with trips coordinated in real time through shared vehicles.

Riders can use Metro Flex through the regional ORCA system, which allows payment, free bus transfers and access to youth ridefree, senior and reduced-fare programs.

Service hours for Issaquah’s Metro Flex are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The pilot provided over 11,000 rides in the last year, helping to close the gaps where fixed-route buses are limited and where hills and distance make it harder to walk to major transit stops. With the initial contract period complete, Issaquah City Council examined ridership and trip patterns to decide how to best shape the service going forward.

Ridership Demands and Service Area Changes Ridership data showed that areas with more homes, jobs and services generated far more Metro Flex trips than lower-density neighborhoods like Squak. To respond to this demand, City Council chose to remove Squak and extend the Issaquah service area up to Central Park in Issaquah Highlands, where there is a larger pool of potential riders and community destinations.

In making these changes, the city prioritized major pick-up and drop-off destinations such as transit stations, Issaquah High School, lowincome housing communities, business parks and shopping centers so that riders can still reach daily destinations with ease.

You have a big job ahead of you, so here are some tips to help train your new baby:

POLAR ICE

Sniff, don’t lick. Baby skin is delicate. Stick to your nose to learn its scent, moods and schedule. You will be the first to know when it needs something, and you can be the hero by alerting the grown humans.

Noise is normal. Even though babies are small, they make big noises.

Don’t be afraid! They are just communicating in the only way they can.

They’re more like dogs at this stage, because they don’t use human words yet.

Food will fall. Babies are messy eaters, so it’s your job to strategically place yourself beneath their chair to keep everything tidy (and enjoy the snacks). However, remember not to steal their food from them. That can trigger very loud noises.

Be a best friend. Stay close. Sit beside them when they cry, wag your tail when they laugh, and walk close enough to protect them when they wobble around on those unsteady little legs.

Renewing Support for Local Schools This February Local, Voter-Approved Levies Help Bridge the Gap in Funding The EP&O Levy alone funds 16.6% of the district’s general fund. The district’s other revenue sources come from Washington state (67.8%); local fees, tuition and gifts (9.4%); other financing sources (3.8%); federal funding (2.1%); and other funding (0.4%).

This February, our community will vote on three renewal levies that fund essential educational services not covered by the state.

The Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) Levy, Capital Levy and Transportation Levy allow Issaquah School District (ISD) to maintain programs and services that students and families rely on every day.

State and federal funding covers only the basic minimum for K–12 education, leaving a significant gap between what is funded and what ISD needs to thrive. That includes essential staff, special education, mental health resources, transportation, technology and student enrichment programs such as advanced courses, dual language learning, athletics and activities, career guidance and more.

For example, the district must use about $9.5 million each year to cover legally required special education services that the state does not fully fund—an amount that continues to grow.

Because these levies were approved in 2022 and expire in 2026, renewing them simply extends existing funding through 2030. They are not new taxes, but a continuation of what voters have already supported. Levies require a simple majority of 50% plus one vote to pass.

The three renewal measures are designed to keep the projected combined tax rate stable at about $3.09 per $1,000 of assessed value, according to the district. For the previous 20 years, the average total combined tax rate for ISD has been $3.86.

Prop. 1: Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) Levy As stated above, the EP&O Levy provides about 16.6% of the district’s annual budget.

It keeps schools running smoothly while supporting students and staff. The levy funds: ●S tudent well-being services: counseling, nursing, behavior supports, security, equity programs, VOICE Mentors, athletics and activities. ● Academic opportunities: 7-period high school days, dual language programs, individual learning supports, Gibson Ek High School and special education.

Prop. 2: Capital Levy The Capital Levy helps maintain safe, modern and functional school buildings. Key investments include: ●T echnology upgrades: 1:1 student laptops, cybersecurity improvements, crisis alert systems, device replacement and AI tools for learning. ●C ritical building repairs: roofs, HVAC, safety systems, food service equipment and sports fields. ●E nhanced safety: secure entrances at all three comprehensive high schools.

Prop. 3: Transportation Levy The Transportation Levy ensures safe, reliable transportation for students by funding: ●B us fleet modernization: reducing maintenance costs across 170 vehicles. ● Electric bus expansion: adding more electric buses and charging infrastructure (currently three electric buses purchased with grant funds).

Remember to vote by Tuesday, Feb. 10. Ballots must be postmarked by that day or dropped in a King County Elections drop box by 8 p.m.

Adventures Around Sunset Walk

Hi

neighbors, we are original Sunset Walk owners (2014). My husband chose our home just before we met. He was drawn to this one because it looks over the grassy knoll, the pond and has a view of the mountain. It was fun to watch our community being built week after week.

We adopted Teddy, a miniature teddy bear goldendoodle in 2018. We were his fifth home in five months. Many neighbors would giggle as I attempted to walk him. Training a puppy is not easy! Luckily many of the dog friends are (still) patient with us.

From Teddy’s point of view, Sunset Walk is the best place ever! Every outing seems to bring a new friend our way.

“Do you want to go see your girlfriend?”

He darts out the door heading to our favorite meet up spot.

“Do you want to go shopping?”

Barks like crazy, then pulls me to HomeGoods where rows of pet items delight.

Every time the growler fire truck siren runs, he jumps up and howls. It makes me laugh every time.

And if we’re remotely close to Mud Bay, he’s going in!

Teddy also takes his civic duties seriously. Issaquah Police Department has a Paws on Patrol program.

Teddy proudly patrols the neighborhood, happily blending crime prevention with his daily strolls.

It’s no secret, I’m a bit of a moving van chaser. I’m always ready to greet new neighbors and share information. In the past, I’ve done welcome cards for new neighbors. One neighbor recently moved and reminded me how much that meant to her. It’s nice to know a small gesture goes a long way. (I should start that up again!) We are grateful for our lovely neighbors who really look out for each other.

The proximity to Grand Ridge Plaza is a big plus!

We’re so close to shopping, services and restaurants.

Swedish Hospital is close and has a lovely gift shop in the lobby, Lily and Pearl. They sell Glassybaby and always have a wonderful selection of décor and gifts.

We love the holiday lights along the main streets.

Winter sunrises are colorful, and on an evening stroll, you can enjoy pretty sunsets.

Brian and Kate Bartle moved into Sunset Walk in 2014. They adopted Teddy, a miniature teddy bear goldendoodle in 2018.

The pond in our “backyard” offers a paved multiuse path that stretches for nearly half a mile. It’s wonderful for daily dog walks and multi-generational family outings. We have a resident eagle in the wetlands and often a blue heron, too. It’s always buzzing with life—kids on bikes, runners and walkers of all ages, neighbors catching up, dogs greeting one another. Everything happens around the pond.

The grassy knoll is a gathering spot for sure. Our block parties have been a hit thanks to the Party Wagon. (We need to do that again!) When weather allows, you will often hear kids laughing as instant friendships form.

Parents gather around and chase the little ones on bikes and scooters. We have a few gathering spaces sprinkled around the neighborhood, too.

We have two pea patches, which is a bonus! In the summer, Agave has live music in the evening. You can garden and enjoy the tunes in Sunset Walk Garden 2.

There are some very talented gardeners (me, not so much)! It is fun to spend time at the pea patch. Folks pass by and stop to admire the gardens. It’s a nice way to take a minute and connect with a neighbor.

Sunset Walk is located across the street from Fire Station 73. We see how hard they work every single day.

It’s important to remember our neighbors that work in our community, too. We so appreciate their service!

The design of our neighborhood (and the Issaquah Highlands) was done so intentionally to create moments of interaction. Courtyards facing the sidewalks or pathways mean each day you can wave and share a smile. You never know what that moment may mean to your neighbor.

Step Inside the Blakely Hall Gallery

The Blakely Hall Gallery is opening the new year with a season of art, history and culture. From January through March, visitors can experience three distinct exhibitions that showcase artistic expression and the stories that shape Issaquah Highlands.

“Revel in Winter” by artist Gregg Goolsby was extended through January 2026.

JANUARY—“REVEL IN WINTER” Artist Gregg Goolsby will continue his exhibition “Revel in Winter” in the Blakely Hall Gallery through January 2026. He uses beeswax and encaustic techniques to blend impressionism with layered texture and create a sense of tranquility.

Goolsby will host a workshop on the art of encaustic painting at Blakely Hall on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 6-7:30 p.m. He plans to explore the medium’s ancient roots, demonstrate unique techniques and share how it shaped his journey. The workshop is free to attend!

Fueled by years of beekeeping, Goolsby was drawn to beeswax as the foundation for his encaustic work. He said each painting follows a meticulous process involving up to 30 layers carefully joined with the heat of his blowtorch.

Much of Goolsby’s inspiration comes from the beautiful places he has visited, using photographs as reference points for his paintings. Due to its popularity, his gallery show was extended from December through January. Don’t miss the chance to view “Revel in Winter” at Blakely Hall.

FEBRUARY—“CONNECTIONS OVER THE YEARS” Before the transition to Community Connect magazine, neighbors received Connections newspaper in their mailboxes for more than two decades. The newspaper was established to help Highlands Council fulfill its mission to build community.

Up until 2021, the newspaper was delivered monthly. It then shifted to a quarterly schedule, which remains the same for today’s magazine. Highlands Council invites the community to explore how Issaquah Highlands has grown and evolved through the pages of Connections in a month-long gallery exhibition at Blakely Hall.

“Connections Over the Years” will be available for viewing throughout February.

Our March gallery “Bahar” will feature a selection of local Persian artists at Blakely Hall.

MARCH—“BAHAR” In March, the gallery exhibition “Bahar,” which translates to “Spring,” will feature primarily female local artists of Persian descent at Blakely Hall. The artist reception will be hosted in conjunction with a Nowruz celebration on Saturday, March 14, from 12-4 p.m.

Nowruz, also known as Persian New Year or Iranian New Year, is a traditional festival that marks the beginning of the spring and the first day of the year in the Iranian calendar.

The word “Nowruz” means “new day,” which symbolizes revival and renewal.

One of the central elements of Nowruz is the “Haft-Sin” table, a tabletop arrangement of seven symbolic items. Each item symbolizes different aspects of life, renewal and the hope for the coming year.

How It Works:

The Highlands Fiber Network (HFN) upgrade is bringing a brand new, next-generation fiber internet system to Issaquah Highlands.

This marks one of our most transformative projects in over a decade, bringing brand-new fiber infrastructure to every corner of the community and connecting neighborhoods one phase at a time.

Work is currently underway in the first upgrade zone. Interest has been extremely high, and many neighbors have already asked to join the first phase of the upgrade.

We’re working through this zone steadily, although not everyone who expressed interest has been scheduled yet.

The reason is simple: the same technicians installing the new network are also the ones who support the community every day. They do it all, from fixing outages and troubleshooting problems to handling repairs and responding to requests. Even while working on the network upgrade, they continue to keep the neighborhood running seamlessly.

• We will move your home to the next available installation appointment, which is roughly a month out at this time.

• This option is ideal for neighbors who want early access before crews reach their part of the community.

More Capacity for Daily Life The majority of homes use several devices at the same time. Phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, cameras, speakers and smart home equipment are all using bandwidth. The new network increases overall capacity, allowing everyone in a household to use the internet at once without interference or lag. The 2.5 Gbps tier is ideal for families where everyone in the household is active on the internet.

Prepared for Future Growth The upgraded system supports 2.5 Gbps today and can scale up to 50 Gbps. In other words, the network is ready to grow alongside the community and adapt to whatever comes next in the world of online technology.

Frequently Asked Questions Q: I signed up to be notified. Why have I not heard anything?

A: If you are in the first upgrade zone, you are still in the queue as we schedule and complete installations in that area. Not everyone has been contacted yet because installation appointments are limited. As mentioned earlier, the same technicians who install the new network are also the ones who support the community each day. We will reach your home as we continue working through the list of installation requests.

If you are outside the first zone, your phase has not started yet. You will hear from us once we reach your neighborhood. Anyone who wants to move sooner can choose to Skip the Line.

Q: Why do I need a router?

A: For the integrity of the new network and your in-home Wi-Fi system, every household needs a router available at the time of installation.

A router is required so that your upgraded connection can be activated and tested during your appointment.

You may use your own router or choose HFN’s Wi-Fi Plus Router, which offers enhanced connectivity features. The Wi-Fi Plus option includes a Wi-Fi 7 router with 24/7 remote support and access to a mobile app. The app allows you to monitor and control your home network from your phone, set parental controls, create guest networks and manage connected devices from anywhere.

Q: When will my area be upgraded?

A: The short answer is that we don’t really know yet. The upgrade process began in the Dahlia Park, Grand View Park and Magnolia Park areas due to specific technological and infrastructural factors. We expect that it will take us most of the first quarter of 2026 to finish upgrades in this area.

We will then reassess the needs of the network to select our next area for upgrades. If any infrastructure or technological issues arise, those will take priority. Otherwise, we will evaluate areas that have expressed the most interest in upgrading to select the next expansion area.

Q: How long will the project take?

A: The upgrade will take several years from start to finish. Every neighborhood will transition to the new network in phases, and the work needed in each area is different.

Some parts of the community require brandnew fiber installed in the ground. Other areas only need new equipment. As a result, the timeline will vary from one neighborhood to the next.

We are moving through the community one section at a time, doing the work carefully while ensuring the current network continues to run smoothly for everyone. It’s a lengthy project, but progress is made every day and each completed phase brings us closer to a fully upgraded network for everyone.
