FINDING A DIFFERENT o f t v n i i e w o p Each year, the return of warm weather brings a familiar sight to Issaquah Highlands. Bright canopies float high above the neighborhood, dancing on thermal currents and tracing slow arcs across the sky.

The arrival of paragliders, who launch from Tiger Mountain and often land in the parks around our community, create a spectacle that many neighbors come to anticipate each year.

Westridge Neighbor Soars to New Heights

Most people experience Western Washington from the ground.

Austin Cox, one of Westridge’s newest neighbors, likes to show people what it looks like from a few thousand feet in the air.

As the owner of Northwest Paragliding, Austin says one of the most rewarding parts of the job is watching students see familiar places from an entirely new perspective.

He has found that flying often changes how people think about the routine problems and stresses of daily life.

“It’s a sport that really draws you in,” Austin added.

He said the experience is also a reminder to take in the natural beauty of where we live and enjoy it from a new vantage point. From Tiger Mountain, pilots can take in sweeping views of Western Washington, including Puget Sound, Downtown Seattle, Mount Baker, Mount Rainier, and the Cascade and Olympic mountains.

Austin’s introduction to paragliding happened one day while hiking Tiger Mountain in 2015.

“I saw people flying and thought it looked like something I could do,” he said.

After taking lessons, Austin’s new hobby quickly grew into a passion that took him to international competitions. In paragliding competitions, pilots navigate a series of checkpoints through the air, relying on wind and thermal currents to complete the course as quickly as possible. He describes paragliding as the “slowest form of aviation.”

“It’s a dark art to understand the air,” he noted.

He has competed all over the world, from World Cups in Argentina to multi-day bivy flying trips in the Indian Himalaya. He also competes locally, claiming that Chelan Butte is one of the best race venues in the world.

which then allows them to fly independently at most sites nationwide.

With proper training, good equipment and safe weather conditions, Austin believes that paragliding is as safe as driving on the highway.

For first-time flyers, talented tandem pilots will handle the flying experience from launch to landing. No experience is needed. The company offers a shuttle to the top of the mountain for those hoping to avoid the steep hike.

At first, Austin balanced his engineering career with an adventurous life in the air. Aspiring to share his knowledge and experience with others, he “took a leap” and launched Northwest Paragliding five years ago.

Tiger Mountain is recognized as one of the most consistent flying sites in the United States. Warm rising air, known as thermals, allows pilots to stay aloft for four to five hours at a time during the summer. Austin said conditions are especially reliable between May and October.

The school offers tandem flights, training for beginners and advanced instruction for experienced pilots, while emphasizing safety, certification and inclusivity. To earn a novice (P2) license, pilots must complete 32 supervised flights and pass a written test,

For Austin, the attraction of paragliding goes beyond flying itself. In an era increasingly dominated by screens, he sees it as a way to reset in nature (often without cell service) before returning to day-to-day life in society.

Issaquah Looks to the Skies Dahlia Park Neighbor Brings New Festival to Life

CHRISTY GARRARD Dahlia Park Resident Issaquah has always felt like the kind of place that keeps a little magic in its back pocket. This is what attracted our family to Issaquah Highlands and the Dahila Park neighborhood back in 2007. We have trails that wind into the trees, salmon that make heroic annual appearances, and enough small-town charm to tempt you into one more cup of coffee.

As a community builder and a former executive director of Highlands Council (2010-2022), I learned that even enchanted places need lively shops, busy restaurants and visitors checking in for a stay. In my role with Visit Issaquah, I have spent the last four years thinking about how to welcome visitors in a way that supports our economy while celebrating what makes this town unmistakably Issaquah.

One answer has been floating above us all along. On many days, Tiger Mountain is dotted with paragliders—bright wings drifting overhead like cheerful kites with somewhere fabulous to be. Just yesterday I watched a bright red-winged paraglider swirl above Grand View Park before lightly touching down to the delight of many neighbors enjoying the pleasant summer day! The sight was a renewed confirmation of an idea I had been socializing with others.

If the mountain is already putting on a show, what might happen if we built a celebration around it?

That question led me to France, at least in spirit, through stories of a festival called Coupe Icare. Each year, costumed pilots fill the sky in a joyful airborne spectacle.

Hearing about it, I remembered Issaquah’s own Fantastic Fly-In from 2015 and began to wonder whether we could dream a little bigger. Could Issaquah host a festival inspired by that same blend of flight, art and delight—something bold enough to draw visitors from near and far?

As it turns out: possibly yes, though not without paperwork, patience and many conversations. In 2024, I worked with local event producer Artist Home on a feasibility study to explore permissions and production challenges. The necessary partners included the Department of Natural Resources, Snoqualmie Tribe, King County, City of Issaquah, Issaquah School District and the paragliding outfitters launching from Poo Poo Point. The verdict was possible, likely expensive, and definitely complicated. In

By 2025, the project had grown wings of its own, and I handed the completed study to two fitting local producers: Northwest Paragliding and Clown Garage, while Visit Issaquah stayed on as an advisor. Mick Holsbeke of Clown Garage brings circus artistry, performance expertise and global production experience. Austin Cox of Northwest Paragliding is an instructor, organizer and international champion in the sport. (Learn about Austin on page 7.)

Together, they made the idea feel less like a maybe and more like the start of something marvelous. With that foundation in place, the vision is now becoming reality.

The result is the inaugural Aire Craft Festival from Aug. 13–16, a four-day celebration of free flight, street arts and outdoor culture in the Issaquah Alps. The Issaquah Community Center and Rainier Trail will become a lively hub of performances, circus arts, family activities, and of course, a sky parade of costumed professional paragliders above Tiger Mountain.

I produced many festivals and special events for Issaquah Highlands over the years, and one of my favorite things about this community is how wholeheartedly people show up for one another—and for ideas with a spark of whimsy.

That is exactly what I hope this festival becomes: a point of pride for neighbors, a boost for local businesses and a memorable invitation for visitors to discover Issaquah’s wonder.

Your Go-To Guru for Pawsitive Living

Dear Roo, I’m a little scared.

Lately, on my walks, I’ve been seeing large animals wandering around without any humans. They give off quite an intimidating vibe!

Roo, a lovable 15-pound mixedbreed rescue, has found her happily-ever-after in the Wisteria Park neighborhood after a challenging start in life. When she’s not busy snuggling, snacking or strolling, Roo loves dishing out life advice to her furry friends and their humans. Her motto? “Treat yourself…literally.”

Recently, my human and I had to stop and wait while one crossed the road in front of us carrying a rabbit in its mouth! My human called it a “bobcat.” I thought we all understood that chasing rabbits is supposed to be a fun exercise—not a successful one.

We’ve also changed our walking course a couple of times lately because of something called a “coyote.”

Now I’m starting to feel nervous even in my own backyard. Sometimes, I get too scared to go potty outside, so I’ve been going in the house instead. Unfortunately, this makes my human very upset.

What should I do?

Please help, Hiding in the Highlands Dear Hiding in the Highlands, Oh friend, your whiskers are right to tingle. Bobcats and coyotes are serious forest neighbors. They do not play the same games we do.

You are absolutely correct that chasing rabbits is supposed to be fun. They’re supposed to be sprinting entertainment, not takeout meals. The fact that your bobcat acquaintance is playing for keeps is a strong clue that this is an opponent best admired from a safe distance (preferably from behind a window, with snacks).

The good news is that your instincts are working exactly as they should. You noticed danger, you stayed alert and you’re trying to stay safe. That’s smart dog behavior.

So, let’s talk about a plan to keep you safe without turning your living room into an emergency potty meadow.

•S tick Close to Your Human: Especially if you’re a smaller breed, backyard potty trips should be quick, supervised missions. Save your leisurely sniffing expeditions for walks. Try to encourage your human to come out with you—especially at dawn, dusk and after dark, when those nefarious characters tend to wander around.

• M ake your Presence Known: It can also help if your human makes a bit of noise before letting you out. As large and intimidating as bobcats and coyotes may seem to us, they’re typically wary of humans and prefer to keep their distance. Even a confident bark can send the message, “Occupied! No vacancy,” and may be enough to deter the wild ones.

•M ake the Backyard Safe Again: It’s okay to hesitate if your yard is spooking you out.

Try encouraging your human to use better lighting, stick together on outdoor trips, and create a treat-based routine for quick potty breaks and back inside.

•R etrain your Brave Button: Your brain is currently connecting “outside” with “uh-oh.”

The Goats Are Back!

Celebrating 20 Years in Issaquah Highlands

Our favorite summer tradition is returning in July! The beloved vegetation-clearing goats are scheduled to arrive in Issaquah Highlands on July 15 and stay for a couple weeks. The goats will graze at South Pond near Central Park and on the hill behind the YWCA in Vista Park.

The IHCA crews and our third-party landscaping vendors will manually service the open spaces not visited by the goats. Your patience is appreciated!

Olivia Raine, the fearless shepherd of Raine Grazing Services, took over herding duties following the retirement of Craig Madsen from Healing Hooves.

While the goats are busy clearing vegetation this summer, Olivia and her herding dogs will stay on-site in a camper to ensure proper management of the herd.

“Over 100 baby goats were born this spring, which is exciting,” she said.

Olivia added that she has a new herding dog in training named Echo.

She will join Penny and Buck to assist with managing the herd. Bella remains the goats’ faithful guard dog.

Why Use Goats?

Each summer for two decades, a herd of goats has traveled to Issaquah Highlands to assist with weed control, vegetation removal

and ecosystem management.

Agile goats can easily handle steep slopes, soft soils, dense thickets of thorns and rocky or uneven terrain. They like eating plants that irritate humans like poison ivy, poison oak and English ivy.

By utilizing goats, we reduce the use of herbicides and prevent seed production. These animals also cause less fuel use, noise and soil disturbance than mowers and other machinery.

Rules for Visiting The goats are kept in the designated area by an electrified perimeter fence and are also watched by guard dog Bella. She works tirelessly to keep the goats safe from both people and predators. She and the goats have grown accustomed to each other and can be in the same pen.

However, please leave your own dog at home when visiting the goats so as not to scare Bella or the goats.

Do not feed the goats. They are extremely particular about what they eat, and some food/plants can be toxic for goats.

We all love these annual guests and want to keep the tradition alive for years to come, so please come pay the goats a visit and be sure to take care of them so they can take care of us!

Building Stability & Investing in Community

The 2025-26 fiscal year reflects the Issaquah Highlands Community Association’s (IHCA) continued dedication to responsible stewardship of community assets, proactive maintenance operations, and enhancement of the parks, facilities, landscapes and public spaces in Issaquah Highlands.

As executive director, my primary focus has been on strengthening the IHCA’s administrative team through the hiring and training of key personnel. With Laura Carver completing her first year with the IHCA and Kim Chick joining the team in March 2026, I am optimistic that we now have a strong, capable community management team positioned for stability, continuity and the organization’s long-term success.

Through the collective efforts of staff, contractors, vendors, board leadership and community partners, IHCA successfully maintained high operational standards

while continuing to invest in long-term sustainability and community aesthetics.

As development progresses at the High Street Collection, the IHCA continues to work closely with builders to ensure new development aligns with our design guidelines and upholds community standards.

In addition, the Custom Architectural Review Committee (CARC) remains engaged with ongoing development on Grand Ridge Drive.

Reserve Projects We completed several reserve projects over the 2025–2026 fiscal year. In addition to $206,700 in supplemental reserve expenditures, the IHCA also: • Replaced two vehicles ($65,300) • Repaired Vista Park’s irrigation system ($1,300)

• Upgraded the holiday lights program ($20,000)

Capital Planning This fiscal year brought exciting progress on parks projects. The playground replacement at Ashland Park has been completed and the design for the remodeled plaza is currently in the bidding phase. A new play structure is on order for Firehouse Park.

Future park projects planned for the next five years include Vista Park, West Highlands Park, Roanoke Woods Park and Summit Park.

The IHCA looks forward to building upon these efforts in the year ahead while continuing to serve the residents of the Issaquah Highlands with professionalism, care and pride.

Master assessments have increased $180 per home over the past 10 years.

KRISTYN MCKINNON IHCA Accounting Manager The 3,618 homes that are members of the Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA), plus 958 rental units, make up 100% of total allowable residential in the master development agreement. Resales were down significantly this fiscal year, with 46 resales (versus 140 resales last fiscal year).

Annual Audit We completed another annual “clean” audit in August, marking 10 consecutive years of clean audits. By providing complete and accurate schedules to our auditors, we keep our audit fees low and our auditors happy.

Investments Our interest income for 2025-26 is estimated to be $45,000. We have a very efficient CD purchase program with our bank, enabling us to be efficient with cash management while receiving very competitive CD interest rates compared to other banks. Our master reserves remain funded at 100%.

Master Assessments Master assessments for the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year will increase by $48 annually ($4/month) to $1,092. This is needed to cover increasing operational costs due to inflation and raising utility costs.

While assessments have increased only 17% over the past 10 years, the cost of living has increased by over 30%.

We continue to encourage the participation of the monthly auto debit payment (ACH) program for collecting assessments, in which 89% of our homeowners participate.

This keeps our cash flow even throughout the year and our delinquencies low at a rate of under 1.5%.

Tree Management & Urban Forest Stewardship

The team continued comprehensive landscape maintenance throughout community common areas, supplemental neighborhoods, our 30 parks, playgrounds, trail corridors, medians and entry monuments. They also maintained turf management programs throughout the community, with extra attention to high-use athletic and recreational areas during the summer months.

Tree management remained a major priority throughout the fiscal year. The IHCA staff and arboricultural contractors conducted ongoing inspections of trees located throughout parks, trails, open spaces and supplemental neighborhoods.

Seasonal planting rotations, annual flower installations, shrub replacements, mulching and perennial rejuvenation projects helped maintain vibrant and welcoming community spaces throughout the year. Crews also focused on replacing aging plant material with drought-tolerant and climate-adaptive species to support long-term sustainability and reduce future maintenance costs.

Irrigation & Water Conservation

A major operational focus this year involved irrigation repairs and water management improvements. With the region preparing for potential drought conditions, the IHCA has proactively coordinated with the City of Issaquah regarding gray water usage and future conservation planning.

Trees identified as hazardous, diseased, storm-damaged or structurally compromised were prioritized for corrective action.

Where necessary, removals were completed to address safety concerns or declining tree health, with replacement planting implemented in targeted areas to maintain long-term canopy goals.

The IHCA also strengthened internal tree removal protocols to improve communication, inspection standards, owner notification procedures and public transparency.

Community Appearance, Code Compliance Support & Emergency Operations The facilities team worked closely with IHCA staff to support community appearance standards and covenant compliance efforts, such as: • Graffiti abatement • Illegal dumping response • Sign maintenance and replacement • Fence repair coordination • Common area cleanup efforts • Storm debris removal • Community event support • Coordination with supplemental associations

IHCA Year in Review Throughout the fiscal year, the IHCA team also responded to multiple weatherrelated events including windstorms, heavy rainfall, freezing conditions and fallen trees. Emergency response efforts included drainage issue response, irrigation emergency repairs, facility assessments, and coordination with contractors and utility providers.

Sustainability & Looking Ahead The IHCA continued improving sustainability and operational efficiency through water conservation efforts, drought-tolerant landscaping, preventative maintenance planning, contractor management and operational workflow improvements.

Seasonal Reminders for a Well-Kept Community As we move into the warmer months, we want to remind everyone about several maintenance and community standards that have become common concerns in the neighborhoods recently. Staying proactive with these items helps preserve property values, community appearance and neighborhood pride.

It’s hard to believe many of the homes in our community are now over 25 years old! That means the original exterior materials of many homes are nearing the end of their useful life. Roofing, paint, trim, siding and other exterior components naturally require more maintenance as properties age.

Recently, the most common concerns have been moss growth on roofs, exterior wood rot and deferred painting maintenance. Moss can shorten the life of roofing materials by trapping moisture, while peeling paint and exposed wood can quickly deteriorate during wetter seasons. Addressing these items early can help prevent more costly repairs later.

Another recurring issue is trash containers being left out for extended periods after collection days. Please store garbage, recycling and yard waste containers out of sight and promptly return them to storage after pickup to help keep the community clean and orderly. Trash containers may only be placed at the curb or street for pickup 12 hours prior to and 12 hours after collection.

Finally, please do not dispose of trash, furniture, construction debris or other materials in dumpsters belonging to neighborhoods where you do not reside or contribute to financially.

These dumpster services are paid for by the individual neighborhood associations.

Please abide by any signage around dumpsters limiting their use. Unauthorized dumping increases neighborhood homeowners’ costs and creates unnecessary service issues for the community. Violators will be fined.

We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and continued efforts to help maintain a clean, attractive and well-cared-for community for all residents. Hundreds of compliance notices are sent every year in accordance with Washington state law and the IHCA Compliance Policy. IHCA staff conducts routine compliance inspections. IHCA’s Jordan Rousu Earns Playground Safety Certification Congratulations to IHCA Facilities Admin Coordinator Jordan Rousu for becoming a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)!

CPSI is a highly recognized certification program managed by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Inspectors are trained to identify hazards, assess risks, inspect playgrounds for safety hazards, and ensure playgrounds comply with national standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and guidelines set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The CPSC estimates that more than 205,850 injuries occur on playgrounds each year.

As an in-house playground inspector, Jordan will routinely examine our community play areas rather than waiting on annual visits from outside inspectors. The IHCA is also saving money by keeping the work in-house.

When new playgrounds are completed (such as in the High Street Collection), Jordan will be able to quickly inspect the structure after installation to catch any issues that need to be repaired early.

AVIK SITANI & ANISHA ARASU Each year, the Issaquah Highlands Youth Leadership Award is presented to recognize exceptional student leadership that inspires peers through community involvement and service. The award was created in 2023 to recognize the outstanding young people that contribute to Highlands Council’s mission of fostering a vibrant and caring community committed to service, diversity and belonging— especially within our youth community.

This year, we’re thrilled to present two Youth Leadership Awards to impactful volunteers. Congratulations to Issaquah High School freshmen Anisha Arasu and Avik Sitani!

In the past three years alone, these two youth volunteers have dedicated more than 622 hours of service to the Issaquah Highlands community.

We were proud to honor longtime Highlands Fiber Network (HFN) volunteer Charlie Herb as our 2025 Volunteer of the Year at the Community Awards Ceremony. Charlie’s recognition was announced in the winter issue of Community Connect, where you can learn more about his calm leadership, generous service and longstanding commitment to Issaquah Highlands.

Charlie has been a guiding force on the HFN Board of Directors for the past 12 years, ever since the community purchased it from Port Blakely in 2013. Prior to that, he joined HFN’s advisory group upon moving into the neighborhood about 22 years ago.

His consistency in service to HFN provides an invaluable perspective on the network and the decisions made over the years. Thank you for all you do, Charlie!

Last summer, both Anisha and Avik played a leading role in planning, organizing and hosting our Global Grub & Groove celebration of Indian Independence Day. Whether booking performers, organizing activities, or confidently emceeing for a crowd of more than 500 people, they created a meaningful event that proudly celebrated their culture and brought the community together.

In her third year on the HY Board, Anisha served as secretary for the past school year. Anisha’s leadership, attention to detail and commitment to the board played an important role in keeping the group productive, collaborative and informed throughout the year. In the next school year, we’re excited to see her step into a new role strengthening connections within the board as director of engagement.

Also in his third year on the HY Board, Avik embraced a new leadership position as director of outreach this past year. Seeing the need to improve our social media engagement and participation at events, he took initiative to create more engaging content, strengthen communication with students, and promote events in ways that encourage greater involvement across the community. We look forward to his leadership as vice president in the coming year.

As the only representatives for their grade level on the HY Board, Anisha and Avik have brought valuable perspective and strong leadership. Their consistent commitment to fostering social connection while amplifying youth voices is inspirational. Thank you both for the time and care you’ve put into strengthening our community.

HIGHLANDS YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD The Highlands Youth (HY) Advisory Board was established over a decade ago to provide youth with a voice in the community-building efforts of Highlands Council. We work to unify youth through meaningful and fun social and service programs.

As the new president for the HY Board, I’m excited to introduce our 2026-27 members! All members are selected based on a written application, references and a peer interview with the executive committee. The board is made up of 22 students in grades 8-12, and we are all passionate about helping our community and creating opportunities for youth to connect.

In early June, our group came together for the first time during a retreat designed to build connections and set priorities for the year ahead. This year, we are looking forward to our traditional events like Treats & Tails and Parents Night Out, but we are also excited to introduce a few new programs into the mix, including service projects to give back to our community.

In the meantime, we hope to see you this summer during one of the Movies on the Green or at the End of Summer Community Picnic. And remember, if you’re in seventh grade or above, you are invited to volunteer with us at events!

Issaquah Student Shines in Geography Competition How a Fascination with Maps, Cultures and Languages Took Neev Singhal to the National Stage

As summer begins, many Issaquah Highlands students are preparing for competitions, tournaments and other opportunities to showcase their talents. For my friend Neev Singhal, that passion is geography.

Neev, a 13-year-old Logan Park resident and incoming eighth grader at Pacific Cascade Middle School, has spent years exploring the world through maps, places and cultures.

That passion recently paid off when he advanced from a regional competition to qualify for both the National Geography Bee in Florida and the International Geography Bee in Thailand.

In May, Neev traveled to Florida for the national competition, where he tested his geography knowledge against more than 200 seventhgrade students from across the country. He said the experience felt much different from regional competition, with stronger competitors and a larger stage.

According to Neev, success often comes down to noticing patterns and connections. He studies everything from language families and regional naming conventions to the Indigenous peoples of countries around the world. This knowledge makes all the difference when facing challenging geography questions.

His interest in geography was reinforced when his family relocated from Issaquah Highlands to Amsterdam about three and a half years ago. While the move was prompted by a new job opportunity, it also opened the door to a different way of life and countless opportunities to explore Europe. Through family travels and new experiences, Neev developed a deep fascination with geography and a desire to learn more about the world.

After living in the Netherlands for almost three years, Neev and his family returned to their home in Issaquah in search of new opportunities and career prospects. His passion for geography, however, only continued to grow. After returning to the United States, he entered in regional competitions, putting his knowledge and skills to the test at events throughout the area.

Next year, he plans to share his enthusiasm for geography by launching a Geography Club at his school.

“I was thinking we could do random geography trivia and timed competitions with buzzers, as well as [occasional] deep dives on a specific continent or country,” he said.

“This goes without saying, but the questions were a lot more difficult than what we’ve been previously quizzed on,” he added. “Also, the score was judged on how quickly you answered a set amount of questions, not just how many you got correct.”

Earning a place at the national and international levels required more than just a love of geography. Neev first had to finish in the top half of competitors in his grade to qualify for nationals, then place among the top third of those students to advance to the international competition.

Freshman Golfer Makes History with State Title Win Ira Upadhyay Becomes First Issaquah High School Student to Take Home a State Championship in Golf She began playing golf when she was seven years old and quickly developed a passion for it.

“I liked being outside and seeing my shots go farther as I got better,” she said.

Crofton Springs resident and Issaquah High School (IHS) freshman golfer Ira Upadhyay is making history on the golf course once again. Four years ago, we interviewed Ira after her victory in the Washington Junior Golf Association (WJGA) state championship in the girls 9-11 division, where she outscored competitors by a large margin.

This year, Ira delivered a standout performance in the Washington State High School Golf Championships at Hawks Prairie Golf Course in May 2026, capturing the individual title with scores of 72 and 68 over two 18-hole rounds.

In golf, lower scores are better, and shooting a score under 70 on a championship course demonstrates remarkable performance. This included an outstanding 31 on the front nine (first nine holes) of the final round, featuring five birdies and four pars.

Like many elite golfers, Ira says the mental game is just as important as the physical, with patience and routine helping her perform under pressure. In moments of stress, she focuses on her routine and takes it one shot at a time.

Looking ahead, Ira hopes to continue competing at the highest levels of junior golf and eventually play in college. For younger athletes with aspirations of similar success, her advice is to “work hard, stay patient and enjoy the process.”

“You can’t control everything, but you can control your attitude and effort,” she added.

“[The tournament] taught me that I can stay patient and trust my game under pressure,” she noted.

Ira reflected on the support she has received from her family, coaches and teammates throughout her golfing journey. She said older teammates helped teach her the importance of staying positive and composed during competition.

Away from the golf course, Ira enjoys surfing, creating art, and spending time with her friends and family. She balances academics and athletics by staying organized and managing her time carefully.

Ira won the state championship in golf as a freshman, a feat never before accomplished in Issaquah High School history.

Ira became the first golfer in IHS history to win a state title. This victory was especially significant because Ira is only a freshman. She also helped lead the Issaquah Eagles to a fifthplace team finish overall in the state tournament.

“There was more pressure, but I treated it like any other tournament,” she said.

A strong stretch of play in the beginning of the final round helped pave the way for her victory and build momentum. She pointed to several key birdies that boosted her confidence and allowed her to settle into her game.

For Ira, this victory was the culmination of years of practice and dedication to the sport.

Ira secured the state title with scores of 72 and 68 over two 18-hole rounds.

The Art of the Reset What Golf Teaches Us About Resilience perceives a threat, whether physical or emotional, stress hormones are released. Our heart rate increases.

Muscles tense. Digestion slows. Our body shifts into survival mode.

SHANTI WILLETT Park Drive Resident There is something about watching a round of golf that feels deeply familiar to life itself. You line up a shot with intention. You have prepared. You know where you want the ball to go.

And then something shifts. A gust of wind appears at the wrong moment.

Your body moves slightly off balance.

The ball veers in the opposite direction of what you imagined, landing in a bunker or slipping into the water.

Now you are left with what is.

Golf does not allow you to erase the last shot, but it also does not allow you to stay there. You must walk to the ball, assess the situation and take the next shot from exactly where you stand. The real skill is not avoiding mistakes. It is learning how to reset.

That is where golf mirrors life so clearly.

Every day, we face moments that do not go as planned. A conversation lands wrong. A decision backfires.

Stress builds. And just like on the golf course, if we carry the frustration of one moment into the next, it begins to affect everything that follows.

Golfers know that taking tension into the next swing almost guarantees another bad shot. The breath shortens. The body tightens. The mind turns critical.

Performance suffers not from lack of ability, but from a dysregulated nervous system.

Life works the same way.

Stress is not just emotional. It is physiological. When our brain

This response is helpful in short bursts, but it is not meant to be sustained.

When stress is carried forward without resolution, our body never fully returns to baseline. Over time, this can affect sleep, immune function, hormones, digestion and emotional resilience. Our body absorbs what the mind tries to push through.

This is why resetting matters.

A reset is not denial or bypassing disappointment. It is the intentional completion of a stress response, so our body and mind can move forward.

Golfers understand this intuitively. They have rituals between shots. A breath. A practice swing. A moment of stillness.

These small actions signal to the nervous system that the last shot is over and it is safe to focus again.

In daily life, we rarely offer ourselves the same grace.

Instead, we replay mistakes, internalize outcomes and tie our self-worth to performance. Over time, this pattern erodes confidence and keeps our body in a state of low-level tension.

Resilience is often misunderstood as toughness or endurance. In reality, resilience is flexibility. It is the ability to experience challenges, recover and adapt without losing oneself in the process. Golf teaches this lesson repeatedly. Even the most skilled players have off days. The difference is not talent. It is how they relate to the experience. A bad round does not define them. It informs them.

This distinction matters deeply for mental and physical health.

Every shot, like every moment in life, is a new opportunity.

A reset can be simple. A slow exhale.

A pause before responding. A conscious release of the story we are telling ourselves. These moments interrupt the stress cycle and remind our body that it is safe to move forward.

Over time, practicing resets builds emotional resilience. Our body learns that stress is temporary.

Our mind learns that mistakes are not permanent. Our self-worth becomes less dependent on performance and more rooted in presence. Perhaps this is why golf feels so humbling and so compelling. It doesn’t reward perfection. It rewards awareness, patience and the willingness to meet each moment as it comes.

Life asks the same of us.

We will misjudge the wind. We will land in unexpected places.

What matters most is not the shot that went wrong, but how we approach the next one. Every moment offers a reset. Every breath is an invitation to choose again. Resilience is not found in avoiding the bunker or the water, but in trusting ourselves to take the next shot with clarity, compassion and steadiness.

That is the art of the reset.

Dear Neighbor,

Let me tell you why I love this place.

It’s not just the breathtaking views of the Issaquah Alps. It’s not just the miles of trails near our back doors that lead into nature. It’s not even the movie theater, restaurants or shopping a short walk from my home.

Grateful as I am for those things, what I love most about Issaquah Highlands is what happens between us. It’s how my neighbor Adrienne helps me plant flowers on my porch. It’s the meals my neighbors brought me when I was sick. It’s the way Sravani, who runs Masthi Bar & Grill with two other women, greets me by name every time I walk in. It’s knowing the nostalgic music of the Issaquah Ice Cream Trike means Ben is nearby with treats, creating childhood memories for the next generation. It’s the smiles at the Village Market pop-ups at Blakely Hall. It’s these, and a hundred small moments like them, that make Issaquah Highlands home in my heart.

At times, I have felt alone here, too. Even surrounded by neighbors. Even after a wave or a smile on the trail.

The U.S. Surgeon General has called loneliness a public health crisis, as harmful as smoking. Most of us have lived inside it. We just don’t talk about it.

That is why Highlands Council exists. Our mission is to foster a vibrant and caring community committed to service, diversity, stewardship and well-being. In plain English, we bring people together so no one here has to feel alone.

I’m proud of that work. Blakely Hall, our community space, gallery and neighborhood living room, anchors about 20 community groups and over 50 events a year, from cultural celebrations to the annual LEGO® Expo.

Block parties give whole neighborhoods a reason to step outside together, and it’s easy to host your own with our free Party Wagon and Block Party Toolkit. The Community Garden lets neighbors grow food and friendships side by side. And the Highlands Youth Advisory Board makes sure our teens, who feel loneliness more sharply than any of us, have a place at the table and a hand in shaping the community they call home.

This magazine is also part of that work, a platform for us to learn about our neighbors as they tell their stories in their own voices.

None of this happens by accident. Lindsey Pinkston, our executive director, doesn’t just lead Highlands Council.

She lives our mission. For 24 years, this has been her community. She was married here, raised two kids here and has poured more than 10,000 hours into this place as a volunteer. There is no one I’d rather have leading us.

She would be the first to say she doesn’t do it alone. Carol, Maddie and Betty are right beside her, often on nights and weekends. I’m grateful for my fellow board trustees, who love this place the way Lindsey does. Our community is lucky to have every one of them.

Last year’s survey told me what many of us feel, but rarely say. You belong here. You want to belong more.

And what holds you back is small, ordinary and daunting: a room full of people you don’t yet know. You said a personal invitation would make a difference. I believe you. I’ve needed one myself.

So here is my invitation to you: start with whatever part of this community feels closest to your heart.

Walk into a community group or start one of your own. Volunteer. Show up to an event just to meet one or two new neighbors. Whatever it is, come as you are. There’s room for you here.

And if you don’t know where to begin, please reach out. Email me. Let me buy you coffee at Caffe Ladro. I want to hear what brought you here, what you love and what you wish we had more of here. There are neighbors and groups where someone exactly like you already belongs, and there’s nothing I’d rather do than help you find them.

Issaquah Highlands is more than a place to live. It’s home in our heart, and it stays that way because we keep showing up for one another.

Gather Around the Table with Afternoon Mah Jongg Join an Afternoon of Strategy and Friendship

The steady click of tiles against tabletops is becoming an increasingly familiar sound in communities around the world—and now in Issaquah Highlands as well.

When Linda moved to Issaquah Highlands a year ago, she quickly became involved at Blakely Hall and was excited to help bring her Mah Jongg experience to the new friends she found here.

Afternoon Mah Jongg, one of our newest community groups, arrives at a moment when many people are searching for something increasingly difficult to find: genuine connection.

For Julie, the journey into Mah Jongg began unexpectedly during a cultural night at her son’s school. Aside from occasionally playing the solitaire computer version as a child, she knew very little about the game. But after learning about different hands and scoring combinations from a volunteer running a Mah Jongg challenge, her curiosity quickly turned into enthusiasm.

In an era shaped by digital exhaustion, constant notifications and online interactions, people are gravitating toward slower, more social hobbies that bring them face-to-face again. According to the online event platform Eventbrite, searches for Mah Jongg events have increased by 365% across the platform, part of a wider resurgence of knitting circles, book clubs and community game nights.

But Mah Jongg’s growing popularity is hardly new. The tile-based game dates back to 19th-century China during the Qing dynasty, where it evolved into both a strategic pastime and an important social ritual. Played during holidays, family gatherings and celebrations, Mah Jongg tables became spaces for conversation, storytelling and multigenerational connection.

Julie began teaching herself how to play while searching for local groups to join. When she reached out to Blakely Hall, she learned there had already been strong community interest in forming Mah Jongg groups. She immediately volunteered to help organize one.

This group plays American Mah Jongg, which differs from the traditional Chinese Mahjong. Players follow the 2026 National Mah Jongg League rule card. If you have a Mah Jongg set, please bring it with you.

Today, Mah Jongg continues to thrive globally. Clubs and social groups have emerged around the world, often blending longtime players with complete beginners. The game’s appeal comes from its balance of skill, strategy and social interaction. Every round invites conversation as much as competition.

That same spirit is now taking shape in Issaquah Highlands. Group leaders Julie Gunter, Linda Rudd and Madaline Kane are helping create a welcoming space where neighbors can learn the game, build friendships and gather around the table together.

Linda first discovered Mah Jongg after retiring in South Carolina in 2010. Looking for meaningful ways to stay active and connected in her community, she joined a local group where neighbors gathered to learn the game together. Over time, the game became more than strategy.

“We found that this game was challenging, requiring attention to detail, but was also social, promoting friendships,” she added.

“So far, these meetings have been a great time of learning a fun, simple and deceptively strategic game,” she said. “My goal is to keep this Afternoon Mah Jongg group a relaxed and welcoming place for folks of all skill levels.”

Players are encouraged to drop in whether they are experienced or completely new to the game. Some come for strategy. Others come for conversation. Most discover a little of both.

Over summer, Afternoon Mah Jongg meets at Masthi Bar & Grill every Wednesday from 1-4 p.m. On Aug. 24, the group will return to Blakely Hall every Monday.

If you prefer Chinese Mahjong, another community group is starting up this fall. Weekend Mahjong will meet every Sunday, starting in October.

Finding Strength in Stillness New Yoga Group Offers Rest, Renewal and Resilience

Gentle breaths and quiet conversation fill the room as neighbors unroll yoga mats at Blakely Hall. Some arrive seeking movement, others mindfulness and many simply looking for a moment of calm before the weekend fully begins.

For Kasak Tahilramani, the new weekly Mindfulness Yoga community group is about much more than exercise. It’s about healing.

“Everything is temporary,” she said. “You are much stronger.”

Kasak first discovered yoga as a teenager, practicing alongside her mother and exploring different styles together. While she enjoyed the physical movement, she found herself most drawn to yoga’s spiritual and meditative aspects.

That connection became deeply personal to Kasak when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023.

The months that followed were filled with surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation and medications. During treatment, physical exercise became difficult, but yoga remained within reach in a different way. She turned to meditation, breathwork and mindfulness practices to help carry her through some of the hardest moments of her life.

“The mindfulness of yoga became my anchor,” she said.

Now in remission, Kasak is channeling that experience into helping others. Last year, she facilitated seven weeks of yoga classes for cancer patients while also completing a certification program to become a yoga instructor.

Her classes emphasize Vinyasa yoga, a dynamic practice guided by breath in which movements flow continuously from one pose to the next. Kasak describes her approach as energy-based and trauma-informed, with an emphasis on breathwork, mindfulness and intentional movement.

Creating Joyful Spaces for Individuals of All Abilities

BY MADDIE COATS, Highlands Council Communications Manager Three local parents envisioned a space where their adult family members with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) could connect, thrive and be empowered to live fulfilling lives.

Together, Jennifer Fricke, Chris Duke and Meri McDougall created All Abilities Washington, a nonprofit with the mission to support and empower individuals with IDD and their families through inclusive community programs that promote social connection, life-skills development, independence and meaningful participation in community life.

Working closely with Highlands Council, these parents are turning their vision into reality with weekly and monthly events at Blakely Hall.

Monthly Family Time, Starting in July Each month, Jennifer, Chris and Meri invite individuals with IDD and their families to connect over shared experiences in an inclusive and welcoming environment centered around a fun theme. Participants are encouraged to wear their favorite character-themed shirts or costumes and join a lively, festive atmosphere on Sunday, July 26, from 1-4 p.m.

Weekly Community Group, Starting in September Starting Sept. 2, the All Abilities Community will meet weekly at Blakely Hall on Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m. Each session, led by volunteers, will feature a variety of interactive activities designed to support social interaction, encourage meaningful relationships and promote active participation in the group.

In addition, caregivers and family members will have opportunities to connect, share resources and support one another, helping to strengthen family networks and reduce social isolation.

Neighbors gathered at the Sunset Walk, Westridge and Vista community gardens to kick off the growing season, connect with fellow gardeners and exchange planting tips.

The three community gardens in Issaquah Highlands cultivate far more than vegetables, herbs and flowers. They are places where neighbors connect, friendships take root and the stresses of everyday life are briefly forgotten.

On any given day, you might find gardeners tending their plots, sharing seeds, swapping advice or teaching each other new techniques.

Each garden has one or more ambassadors who provide support and oversee operations throughout the season.

Ambassadors regularly visit the gardens and report any maintenance issues or areas of concern.

Meet the garden ambassadors who help grow connection, knowledge and belonging across the Vista, Sunset Walk and Westridge gardens.

What inspired you to become a garden ambassador?

Ben: Once I started gardening in a community garden, I saw the need to help with organizing communication and maintenance and thought I could be of service.

Brian: I’ve always believed that green spaces bring people together. When I saw how much joy and connection the gardens created, I wanted to be part of nurturing both the plants and the community.

Dave: I have always enjoyed getting to know my garden neighbors, learning about what they are growing and offering tips from my own experience. I also tend to visit my garden quite frequently and help when something needs attention.

Jonathan: As someone who’s been a participant in the ambassador program for several years now, I enjoy doing my part for the overall upkeep of the garden, helping the folks who are new to gardening, and just meeting my neighbors in general.

Kate: Fostering community is important to me. I have been an ambassador for a few different years. It’s nice to chat with people and welcome them to the neighborhood.

Laura: Becoming a garden ambassador felt like a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow gardeners, share experiences and help strengthen our gardening community.

Lisa: I became an ambassador because of my love of gardening and for the opportunity to meet other gardeners in the community.

Steve: I saw an opportunity to share garden knowledge and learn from others.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering in the community gardens?

Ben: I really enjoy meeting new gardeners and helping everyone out. Problem solving garden issues is always a blast.

Brian: I love the mix of quiet moments and shared conversations. One minute, I’m weeding and watering in peaceful silence, and the next, I’m swapping tips with a fellow gardener or helping a new gardener discover their first sprout/bloom.

Dave: I love to get to know my neighbors and to see all the interesting different vegetables and techniques in everyone’s gardens.

Jonathan: Seeing families teaching their children about gardening and the value of being able to grow their own food…

Knowing how to grow your own healthy food is one of the most valuable skills any parent can teach their children.

Kate: I love it when people pass by and admire everyone’s hard work. It’s fun to see all ages appreciate the community garden.

Laura: I enjoy the people. I love getting to know my fellow gardeners, learning what they’re growing and hearing what they love about gardening. It’s inspiring to see the different approaches, ideas and stories that everyone brings to the garden.

Lisa: I enjoy learning from others. There are some amazing flower and vegetable growers in our midst. It’s an activity that spans generations and cultures and one that pulls us together.

Steve: I enjoy socializing with fellow gardeners and meeting new people.

Do you have a favorite plant, flower, fruit or vegetable to grow?

Ben: Bulbs are my favorite, especially irises. I love that with proper care they multiply and come back year after year! My favorite vegetables to grow are tomatoes, sun gold specifically. They taste like candy!

Brian: Strawberries are my favorite to grow. They’re cheerful, delicious and incredibly rewarding. You put in a little care, and suddenly you’re surrounded by bright red berries that taste like summer. I love some garden berries, pound cake and whipped cream!

Dave: Tomatoes are a classic and my favorite! The resulting fruit is gratifying and we love to cook with our bounty. I love homemade pizza with garden tomatoes and BLTs with giant beefsteak tomatoes. Potatoes are another favorite. You can’t see the results of your labor until the very end when you dig up the plants!

Jonathan: As cliché as it sounds, my favorite thing to grow is kale. It’s an incredibly resilient plant. With moderate care, it will continue to grow right on through the winter months.

And it’s a superfood with incredible nutritional benefits.

Kate: I like growing sweet pea flowers. They grow up the trellis near the entrance as a welcome to the garden. They smell fantastic!

Laura: Dahlias, without a doubt! I grow flowers exclusively these days. I tried growing vegetables for a few years, but I didn’t really enjoy it (and I wasn’t particularly good at it).

A few years ago, I fell down the dahlia rabbit hole and have been hooked ever since. I love their vibrant colors, petal and bloom shapes, and the joy they bring throughout the season!

Lisa: I’m a bit obsessive about tomatoes. I credit this love from spending time with my grandfather in Ohio, who grew the most amazing tomatoes.

Steve: Dahlias and tomatoes because I love to see the blooms and share cut flowers with friends. We eat caprese every day during tomato season. I never tire of it.

What’s one gardening tip you love sharing with new gardeners?

Ben: Embrace the nature around you, rather than trying to control it. Neighboring gardeners can be a great resource for pest and wildlife solutions, and many creatures—including snakes—play an important role in a healthy garden ecosystem.

Brian: Start small and observe often. Plants will tell you what they need if you pay attention, whether it’s drooping leaves, pale color or new growth. Careful observation and a quick internet search are two of the most valuable garden tools.

Dave: Timing is everything. Every year, I see gardeners rush to plant during the first warm spell, which is often too early or too late for many crops. By timing your plantings, you can harvest for a much longer portion of the year and achieve greater success. Crops like peas, potatoes and lettuce thrive in the cooler spring months, while tomatoes and peppers can suffer when planted too soon. I often fall victim to this myself and understand that it’s hard to resist the temptation, but planting too early only damages the plants and makes them susceptible to disease.

Jonathan: Everyone likes to buy those pepper plants (bell pepper, jalapeño, chili pepper, etc.) from Home Depot and Lowe’s. One thing you should know about those pepper plants is they like to be HOT. They prefer temperatures above 75 degrees. If you really want results from your pepper plants, find the warmest place possible to grow them.

The hotter, the better. I grow mine on my south-facing patio.

Kate: It’s more fun pulling weeds when live music is playing at Agave in the summer!

Laura: Don’t be afraid to experiment. Gardening is all about learning what works in your unique space. Try different plants, planting times, watering schedules and growing techniques. Every garden is a little different, and finding what thrives is part of the fun. If something doesn’t work, it’s simply another piece of the puzzle and an opportunity to learn for next season.

Lisa: Don’t be in a rush to get your tomato plants in the ground. Wait until the nights are 50 degrees. If your plants have been in the ground for a week or two and haven’t grown at all, it’s a sign they were planted before the soil warmed up. One new tip I learned recently from the amazing Cisco Morris is to place an antacid in the ground when planting tomatoes for a quick boost of calcium and to help prevent blossom end rot.

Steve: Don’t be tempted to plant veggies that hate cold too early. Amending your soil each year is important to success.

Events, Investments and Light Rail Progress There’s so much happening these days in Issaquah!

To start, I have some great news!

Thanks to the advocacy of more than a hundred Issaquah community members and our elected officials, Sound Transit’s proposal for the future of regional light rail includes funding for the Issaquah line!

In order to fund the light rail extension given the $34.5 billion deficit, Sound Transit is proposing to push back the delivery date again from the current 2044 timeline.

Delays are frustrating, but the important thing is we’re still on the map. Everyone assumed our light rail line would be cut, but we’ve worked really hard to save Issaquah light rail for our community and the Eastside.

We remain confident that if we can showcase additional cost savings in the planning process, we can lower the cost of our line and work with Sound Transit to move that timeline back up substantially..

Meanwhile, Olde Town Issaquah will come alive in a new way this August.

The City of Issaquah is excited to partner with the Downtown Issaquah Association (DIA) to launch Al Fresco on Front Street, a series of weekend street closures designed to create a more vibrant and walkable downtown experience. Every weekend in August, Front Street will close to vehicle traffic from 8 a.m. Saturday through 10 p.m. Sunday.

The goal is simple: create more space for people.

During the closures, businesses will be able to expand outdoors into the public right of way. Restaurants can offer additional seating. Shops can create outdoor displays and experiences. Community groups can stage games and music. Families and friends can gather, walk, dine and enjoy Olde Town together.

Many residents remember a similar program during the pandemic. It quickly became one of the community’s favorite experiences during

those challenging moments during COVID. I’ve heard from many people asking the city to bring it back in some way. Residents loved the unique way to explore one of their favorite places in the city. Businesses appreciated the increased foot traffic.

Families enjoyed having a safe and welcoming place to spend time.

Al Fresco on Front Street is what we’ve come up with to meet that request.

Front Street will close to traffic on weekends in August, allowing more businesses to expand outdoors into the public right of way.

This program is about supporting local businesses while also creating new opportunities for community connection. When more people spend time downtown, it strengthens our local economy and helps create the lively atmosphere that makes Olde Town special. It also builds on our investments.

Pedestrian Park and the Senior Center plaza were completely redesigned last year and the community has told us how much they love the changes.

We are also excited to partner with DIA to bring additional activities and promotions throughout the weekends. More details will be announced as we get closer to August, but residents can expect familyfriendly events, community activities and unique ways to explore downtown.

I encourage everyone to make plans to visit Olde Town this August.

FROM THE CITY Preparing for a Hot, Dry Summer Your Checklist for Wildfire Readiness

HARDEN YOUR HOME Check off the following steps when preparing your property for wildfire.

1. Immediate Zone n Remove any vegetation located within 5 feet of your home. n Remove anything flammable within 5 feet of your home (firewood, debris, objects). n Add non-flammable hardscaping (like gravel) within 5 feet of your home.

Do you remember when Los Angeles got more rain than Seattle back in 2024? Forecasts indicate we are headed into a “Super” El Niño weather pattern, which is a stronger version of what brought us that unusually dry year. This means we expect drier and warmer conditions this summer, in addition to an elevated wildfire risk. Now is the perfect time to ensure you are prepared for wildfire.

2. Roof and Gutters n Inspect and remove flammable tree debris from your roof and gutters.

With the input of many local partners, King County and Eastside Fire and Rescue recently released a comprehensive guide to prepare our community for wildfire. Here are a few excerpts from the King County Wildfire Ready Toolkit that are particularly impactful for Issaquah Highlands residents.

4. Exterior Wall Coverings n Ensure there is a minimum of 6 vertical inches of noncombustible siding material around the base of the home, measured from the ground up and from any attached horizontal surfaces, such as decks.

n Replace plastic/vinyl gutters and downspouts with metal ones. n Repair or replace damaged roofing or fix gaps where embers could gather and ignite any underlying flammable material.

3. Vents n Cover all home ventilation opens with 1/8-inch corrosion-resistant metal wire mesh screens or install ember-resistant vents. n Inspect vent screens to ensure they are in good condition with no tears, large openings or small flammable material clogging them. n Make sure any dryer vent has louvers or a flap to prevent ember entry.

5. Decks n Remove anything combustible from underneath decks and deck stairs. n Remove all vegetation including grass and weeds from under decks and deck stairs. n Remove all vegetation debris accumulations from deck surfaces. n Limit combustible items kept on deck, especially large rugs and combustible furniture. n Retrofit attached decks by installing metal flashing between the ledger board and joists. Extend flashing 6 inches above the ledger board to protect combustible siding material where the deck is attached to the home.

6. Fences and Gates n Remove combustible fencing and gates within 5 feet of the home and replace with noncombustible material such as aluminum, chain link or iron. n Further reduce vulnerabilities posed by fences by removing or replacing combustible fencing on your property within 30 feet of your home, buildings or neighboring homes.

Disclaimer: Changes to the exterior of your home almost always require IHCA approval through the Architectural Review Committee (ARC).

PREPARE YOUR FAMILY Three actions can better prepare you for wildfire: 1. Make an Evacuation Plan n Designate an emergency meeting location outside of the immediate area where your family will meet if separated. n Get to know the routes out of your neighborhood and get familiar with all of them in the event traffic is rerouted in an evacuation. n Establish an out-of-area contact that members of your family will check in with during an emergency.

Local communication networks can become overloaded during emergencies, and it can be easier to get information to and from the impacted area.

2. Build a “Go Bag” n Essentials: • Map marked with evacuation routes • Prescriptions • Change of clothing • First aid kit • Flashlight • Battery-powered radio and extra batteries • Sanitation supplies • Copies of important documents (passports, insurance, etc.)

• Pet supplies • Face mask or covering • Cash for small expenses (continued next column)

Level 3: Go! • Leave now! There is danger in your area.

• Follow directions from the police or fire department.

• Do not return home until officials have determined it’s safe.

PREPARE TO LEAVE When evacuation is anticipated, consider the following if time allows: 1. Outside n Gather flammable items and bring them inside. n Turn off propane tanks. n Turn off sprinklers and running water. Leaving them on can decrease critical water pressure. n Leave on exterior lights (not interior) so that your home is visible to firefighters in times of heavy smoke at night. n Put your “Go Bag” in your vehicle.

2. Inside n Shut off gas at the meter or tank. Turn off pilot lights. n Shut all windows and doors. n Remove flammable window shades and curtains. n Move flammable furniture to the center of the room, away from windows and doors. n Shut off air conditioning or heating to your home.

3. Animals n Locate your pets and keep them nearby.

n Place a ladder at the corner of your house for firefighters to quickly access your roof.

You don’t need to wait for an evacuation order to leave.

If you feel in danger, leave immediately. A prompt response will cut down the time it takes the community to leave.

n Check on neighbors and share information with them. If they don’t have access to a vehicle, consider carpooling.

Save Water and Money This Summer In your yard:

If you are a skier or love doing activities in the mountains over the winter, you experienced the less-than-ideal snow conditions this year.

Snowpack is also critical for feeding our water supply as we rely on the runoff throughout the summer months. In April 2026, the Washington State Department of Ecology issued a statewide drought declaration due to low snowpack as well as years of lower than anticipated rainfall.

As a result of early planning, our region does not anticipate any water shortage impacts for customers. However, our community does need to be cautious about water use as the impact can hit the wallet.

There are ways to scale back on your water usage and ensure your home isn’t experiencing leaks. Even small leaks can add up to a very high water bill.

• Rethink how you irrigate. Irrigation is one of the biggest drivers of summer water bills, with a typical irrigation system using 1,000-1,500 gallons per hour. To reduce water use, consider watering early in the morning or late in the evening, turn off your system on cool or wet days, and fix broken heads quickly. While the city offers some water bill adjustments for leaks, irrigation systems are not covered.

• Consider replacing your lawn with low-maintenance, drought-tolerant landscaping. You can even earn money by getting rid of your lawn! Cascade Water Alliance offers rebates with its Lawn Be Gone: Grass Removal Program.

• Not quite ready to get rid of the lawn?

Let it go dormant in the summer by cutting back on watering. It will return with the fall rain.

• Transition to a drip irrigation system, which will ensure your plants get the water they need without overwatering and keeping those water bills at a minimum.

• Cascade Water Alliance has numerous resources and free classes to help you improve irrigation efficiency, transition to a drought tolerant landscape and reduce water use in your garden.

In addition to supporting our community members in water conservation efforts, the City of Issaquah is committed to delivering the best quality drinking water.

Each year, the city distributes a water quality report to all members of the community. In addition to information regarding drinking water quality, the report details collaboration with Cascade Water Alliance on initiatives aimed at reducing water consumption.

The city makes necessary investments in water main replacements, reservoir repairs and other infrastructure improvements to address water leakage and reinforce conservation objectives.

In your home: • Check for leaking toilets and sinks. What may seem like a minor issue can result in a huge amount of water use. A leaking toilet can overuse up to 200 gallons per day!

• Cascade Water Alliance offers free water saving tools such as low flow showerheads and toilet leak detection dye tablets.

• Puget Sound Energy offers rebates for more water efficient appliances, such as laundry appliances.

Preparing for the Emerald Ash Borer

A tiny bright-green beetle may not look threatening, but across North America, it has destroyed hundreds of millions of ash trees.

Experts say it’s likely only a matter of time before it reaches Washington.

The emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive insect originally from Asia. Since arriving accidentally in Michigan in the 1990s, it has spread across much of the United States and Canada, causing an estimated $10 billion in damage and wiping out nearly all ash trees in affected areas. Several native ash species, especially in the Eastern United States, are now considered critically endangered.

In 2022, EABs were discovered near Portland, Oregon, and it has since been confirmed in British Columbia. While it has not yet been found in Washington, communities across the region are preparing for its arrival.

Adult EABs are small—about half an inch long—with a metallic emerald-green color.

The real damage happens after they lay eggs in the bark of ash trees. Once the larvae hatch, they feed beneath the bark, cutting off the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. Very clear serpentine paths under

the bark are often seen in damaged trees.

Over time, the tree dies.

Although ash trees are less common in the Pacific Northwest than in other parts of the country, they still play an important role here. Native Oregon ash trees grow in wetland and streamside areas, and nonnative ash species are commonly planted along streets and in parks.

Once a tree becomes infested, removal is often the only option. Some especially high value trees can be protected with treatments, which are expensive and must be repeated every few years.

To prepare, the City of Issaquah and the Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA) are working together to identify high-value ash trees that may need protection in the future. Experts recommend beginning treatment once EABs are detected within about 15 miles of an area.

So, what can residents do now?

• Avoid planting new ash trees • Don’t move firewood long distances, since pests can travel inside it • Learn how to identify the emerald ash borer • Report suspected sightings to the Washington Invasive Species Council Those resources can be found online at issaquahwa.gov/urbanforestry.

Survey Results Data Shows Residents Crave Connectedness

In our 2026 Community Survey, hundreds of Issaquah Highlands neighbors shared what kinds of events, traditions and community experiences matter most to you.

We invited residents to weigh in on several areas of community life, including how you prefer to stay connected, what issues you see as most important, and preferred events and groups. The survey also evaluated resident satisfaction with Highlands Fiber Network (HFN) along with Issaquah Highlands Community Association (IHCA) administrative, landscaping and maintenance services.

The results paint a clear picture: neighbors value opportunities to gather, connect and build community together. Data suggests that residents see Highlands Council events as more than entertainment, but as important spaces to foster a stronger sense of belonging.

Neighbors expressed strong support for preserving community traditions. About 87% of survey takers said the End of Summer Community Picnic should continue, followed by strong support for Community Safety Meetings (79%), Movies on the Green (76%) and Village Markets (75%).

Results also revealed significant interest in

programs designed to bring people together.

More than half of respondents said they would like to attend neighborhood socials (57%). Survey takers emphasized their enthusiasm for volunteer-led community groups (47%), cultural celebrations (45%) and family-friendly live music events (45%).

Consistent with past surveys, neighborhood crime and safety remained the top concern among residents (59%). Respondents also highlighted land development (36%), traffic and pedestrian safety (33%), social connectedness (27%) and business updates (27%) as key issues of interest.

Interest in Highlands Council programming also extends beyond neighborhood residents.

Visitors to Issaquah Highlands want to attend more Village Markets (50%), followed by gallery receptions (29%). Community members from outside the neighborhood expressed the strongest interest in art events (43%), while family-friendly live music events, women-focused events and community group programming each received support from 36% of survey takers.

Survey results showed 81% satisfaction with the overall management of IHCA staff.

A strong theme throughout the survey was appreciation for the shared spaces that bring residents together. Satisfaction with IHCA landscaping services reached 92%, while 94% of respondents said they were satisfied with the community’s open spaces, parks and trails. Common areas also received strong marks at 90%, with basketball courts, play structures and other neighborhood amenities earning positive feedback from residents.

The survey also showed that neighbors are looking for convenient and accessible ways to engage with one another. Weekend afternoons emerged as the preferred time for events at 63%, while weekend nights and weeknights each received support from 54% of respondents.

Survey participants said accessible event information online (66%), free admission (50%) and nice weather (47%) all play an important role in choosing whether to attend community gatherings. One in three residents said a personal invitation makes them more likely to show up—a reminder that community starts with simply inviting a neighbor along.

Now in its second year, it’s encouraging to note that 62% of survey respondents rely on Community Connect magazine to stay informed about neighborhood news and upcoming events. About 55% of residents identified the Weekly E-News as a trusted source of information, followed by the official Facebook page at 41%.

The survey also highlighted appreciation for services that help support daily life behind the scenes. Neighbors who use HFN frequently cited reliability and fast internet speeds among the service’s biggest strengths, while one-third of respondents said they value that the network is communityowned. More than half of survey takers also expressed interest in expanded communitywide Wi-Fi service.

Art as Therapy

A Summer Gallery Inspired by Balance, Harmony and Healing

For Sammamish-based fine artist Kasak Tahilramani, art is more than a visual experience. It’s an invitation to pause, reflect and reconnect with a sense of inner balance.

Working under her studio name, WhiteFlutter, Kasak creates pieces that translate feelings of peace, harmony and stillness onto canvas. Her work is inspired by the concept of Sattva, a Sanskrit term representing purity, goodness and mental clarity. She embraces these qualities when using layered textures, intricate metallic accents and bold colors in her art.

“WhiteFlutter art is a direct translation of inner peace onto the canvas,” Kasak said. “Each piece invites you to experience the transformative energy of deep stillness.”

Her collection Rang aur Ruh, meaning “color and soul,” embodies this philosophy of balance and inner peace. Curated as an “intentional sanctuary” for collectors, the series features oneof-a-kind pieces that Kasak calls “visual anchors.” More than decorative artwork, each piece is designed to foster a sense of calm and support personal growth within the spaces they inhabit.

Kasak’s artistic journey began at age 16, inspired by the large-scale oil paintings created by her sibling. While her passion for art developed early, her career initially followed a different path.

For nearly two decades, she led a dual life. She balanced a demanding role in the technology industry by day and refined her craft under classical mentorships by night.

“Radiant Beginnings”

That unique combination of analytical thinking and creative expression has established her as a unique voice in the contemporary art world.

A life-changing breast cancer diagnosis ultimately reshaped Kasak’s artistic direction, she said.

During recovery, she embraced a more disciplined practice centered on healing, balance and self-discovery. The experience deepened her understanding of art’s therapeutic potential and inspired her to dedicate her work to what she describes as “Art as Therapy.”

Now in remission, Kasak creates paintings designed to evoke “somatic stillness,” a physical and emotional sense of calm that invites you to turn inward and cultivate a deeper connection with yourself. Her signature use of radiant teals, rich crimsons and intricate metallic layering has attracted collectors around the world, with works now residing in collections across multiple countries.

Through WhiteFlutter, Kasak continues to explore the intersection of art, healing and human connection. Each painting serves as both a work of art and a reminder that peace and stillness can be found amid the noise of daily life.

Connecting Through Creativity Issaquah Open Studio Tour Expands to Blakely Hall in Third Year

BY MADDIE COATS, Highlands Council Communications Manager The Issaquah Open Studio Tour will return for its third year on Sept. 26, expanding its footprint with a new venue and more opportunities for artists and community members to connect. The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For the first time, Blakely Hall will serve as a featured tour location.

The venue will host a monthlong exhibition throughout September showcasing work from alumni artists who participated in the tour during its first two years.

The one-day art tour is produced by Art Commons, an artist-led nonprofit that hosts year-round programming designed to foster a supportive environment where artists can thrive together. Ali Marcus, local artist and owner of Happy Time Studio, founded the art tour in 2024 before handing it over to the nonprofit she helped start.

“Art Commons is about bringing people together,” Ali said.

The event invites visitors to explore artist studios and exhibition spaces, meet artists face-to-face, ask questions, participate in activities and gain a deeper understanding of the creative process. Ali said the goal is to create meaningful interactions between

artists and the public while “knitting together community.”

Organizers hope visitors will take something home with them, whether it’s an original piece, a new idea or the feeling of human connection.

The studio tour is a juried event. Artists must apply to participate, and only 10 artists were selected for this year’s tour.

Participating artists are compensated for their involvement.

Featured artists include Tiffany SmithFleischman—who is an Issaquah Highlands resident—as well as Ardra Arwin, William Cook, Miki Hau, Gift Homsaen, Kelly Hyde & Joey Valentine, Cathleen Reis Leader, Papia Nandi, Garima Naredi and Toni Pinto.

This year, Blakely Hall joins the lineup as another communal gathering space. Ali said the addition will create more opportunities for artists and visitors to engage while also allowing other regional studio tours and arts organizations to have a presence during the event.

“Artists need artists to succeed,” she said.

The monthlong Blakely Hall exhibition will feature alumni artists from the tour’s first two years. Organizers have invited 24 artists to participate. Visitors to the tour will also receive a map of artist locations and may have opportunities to participate in giveaways and other activities.

Ali describes the experience as a blend of “hospitality and intimacy,” creating space for authentic, person-to-person conversations that are often difficult to replicate in traditional gallery settings.

Ultimately, Ali sees the event as more than a showcase of local talent. Beyond showcasing artwork, the tour emphasizes relationshipbuilding. Artists and visitors are encouraged to spend time together, exchange ideas and discover the stories, perspectives and processes that bring each piece to life.

“This event is like a big hug for the arts community,” she said.

HFN has cultivated a strong foundation for connectivity since 2013, when the community chose to buy and own it. Now that it’s being upgraded, the project reflects an ongoing investment in the systems residents depend on every day.

Priorities for Residents Whether residents are working from home, streaming or managing a connected household, the conversations with HFN usually come back to the same priorities: reliability, speed and long-term confidence in the network. Those are the core expectations of our community, and the network upgrade underway right now is the direct response.

A Stronger, More Consistent Connection Reliability is what we hear about more than anything else. Residents want to know that the connection will hold steady during the busiest hours of the day, when every home in Issaquah Highlands is putting the network to work at the same time.

The upgraded network takes reliability further. Instead of homes sharing pathways through central equipment, the new network gives

The restaurant is open Tuesday through Sunday until 10 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, service is extended until 1 a.m., with a late-night happy hour starting at 11 p.m. In a neighborhood where many restaurants close earlier, Masthi gives residents a rare late-night option for foods, drinks and gatherings.

Beyond its food and events, Masthi’s connection to the community runs much deeper.

Since opening, the restaurant has supported local programs, nonprofits and community gatherings, including providing meals for people in need. This commitment reflects Masthi’s mission of caring for customers through service, generosity and community involvement. Digging Into the Latest Developments in Issaquah Highlands Neighbors are paying close attention to how the community is growing and changing, according to our 2026 Community Survey.

The survey found that 27% of respondents wanted more information about business updates, while 37% cited land development as most important to them.

In response to that feedback, we’ve gathered the latest updates on new businesses, development projects and major infrastructure investments shaping the future of Issaquah Highlands.

Business Updates Grand Ridge Plaza, our local shopping area with more than 50 restaurants, shops and services, is introducing several new businesses in the coming months. The latest eatery to open was Masthi Bar & Grill at the end of March 2026.

The wait is almost over for fans of crispy, flavorful wings. WingStop is expected to open any day now. The fast-casual restaurant chain specializes in chicken wings, tenders and sandwiches served with a variety of signature sauces and dry rubs.

You might have noticed that BB’s Teriyaki is no longer open. While ownership is staying the same, the restaurant will transition to Nom House Vietnamese Kitchen in early July 2026. The new restaurant will open with a refreshed space, entirely new menu and the same team that served the community at BB’s.

The Springs Living recently broke ground on a 55+ senior living community on the southeast side of the High Street Collection development.

Land Development Construction is progressing at the High Street Collection along Discovery Drive and 9th Avenue Northeast, where crews are preparing for 77 townhomes, 210 apartments and a 55+ senior living community.

On the southwest side of the project, Shelter Holdings (also known as IHIF Commercial) is constructing a new park adjacent to Northeast Discovery Drive and the West Highlands Park neighborhood. This will continue to be an active work area over the coming months as crews complete grading, utilities and site features for the future park space.

The Springs at Issaquah Highlands, a 225-residence senior living community on the southeast side of the development, broke ground on June 3. The four-story community is designed to reflect the character of Issaquah Highlands and its walkable access to parks and trails. It will include 225 residences with 114 independent living, 84 assisted living and 27 memory care apartments.

Located adjacent to Swedish Issaquah, the senior living community is expected to open in late 2028.

Infrastructure Investments Puget Sound Energy (PSE) is updating Issaquah’s power grid to provide more reliable energy to homes and businesses and increase electric capacity for the entire community. As a result, PSE is building the new Grand Ridge Substation next to Vista Gardens, which will deliver power through an underground distribution system.

According to PSE, residents can expect sporadic traffic constraints on Park Drive throughout the summer as crews fix conduits across the community. When construction begins on the substation, which is expected this coming winter, there will be trail restrictions around the site.
