ESTIRPARE O PROMUOVERE?

La vendemmia 2024 è accompagnata da tanti interrogativi. Non prettamente i soliti di ogni anno.

Infatti, a quelli climatici - 41 milioni di ettolitri stimati (+7% rispetto al 2023 ma in calo su base quinquennale) - si sono aggiunte riflessioni più ampie, dettate dalla CRISI GLOBALE DEI CONSUMI DI VINO che spingono le istituzioni europee a vagliare misure di fronteggiamento.

Le posizioni per ora sono distanti a tutti i livelli. La Francia ha già imboccato una strada radicale: estirpare (stanziati 120 milioni di euro per un massimo di 30 mila ettari) per ridurre la quantità di uva immessa su di un mercato che sembra saturo o comunque non più in grado di assorbire tutta la quantità in circolazione. Gli altri paesi europei, Italia in testa, sono più moderati, anzi spingono per strumenti alternativi. Per bocca del Ministro Lollobrigida la politica italiana vuole concentrare le risorse a favore degli investimenti in promozione attraverso l’OCM-VINO (100 milioni complessivi quest’anno per l’Italia).

Ma i fronti non sono unanimi neanche internamente: se Unione Italiana Vini è contraria, Assoenologi si concentra soprattutto sulle rese troppo alti, Coldiretti ha aperto all’estirpazione, chiedendo più flessibilità nella gestione delle AUTORIZZAZIONI AL RE-IMPIANTO, allungandone la durata, assieme ad altre misure. Al G7 Agricoltura di Siracusa c’è stata l’occasione per un confronto ampio che terrà sicuramente banco nei prossimi mesi e che noi seguiremo con attenzione per fare luce su di una fase epocale per tutto il settore, forse come non mai di fronte ad un dibattito fondamentale per il suo stesso futuro. Ne parliamo anche nella rubrica Politica nel vino nelle prossime pagine.

UPROOT OR PROMOTE?

The 2024 harvest brings with it many questions—not just the usual ones. This year, beyond climate concerns, broader reflections have emerged due to the GLOBAL WINE CONSUMPTION CRISIS, pushing European institutions to consider countermeasures.

For now, opinions differ at all levels. France has taken a radical approach: uproot vineyards (with €120 million allocated to remove up to 30,000 hectares) to reduce the number of grapes entering an already saturated market that can no longer absorb the volume of wine being produced. Other European countries, with Italy at the forefront, are more moderate and are advocating for alternative strategies.

According to Minister Lollobrigida, Italy’s policy aims to focus resources on promotion through the EU’s OCM WINE PROGRAM, with €100 million allocated for Italy this year.

However, even within Italy, opinions are divided. Coldiretti has opened up to the possibility of considering vineyard uprooting, calling for more flexibility in REPLANTING AUTHORIZATIONS, such as extending their duration, along with other measures. The G7 Agriculture Summit in Siracusa will offer a platform for a broader discussion that will likely dominate in the coming months. We will closely follow this debate, as it marks a pivotal moment for the sector, perhaps more so than ever before, as it faces crucial decisions about its future. We will also cover this in detail in our “Wine Politics” section on the following pages.

ULTIME DAL MONDO DEL VINO / WINE NEWS WINEMAKER

LA NUOVA SFIDA DI ROBERTO CIPRESSO SI CHIAMA ORIA Si chiama Oria il nuovo progetto del winemaker Roberto Cipresso e fa base in Toscana, a Montalcino, dove attualmente vive. Assieme al suo socio e amico Martin Iglesias, l’enologo veneto dà vita ad un nuovo progetto: piantare 140 cloni unici di Sangiovese provenienti da tutto il mondo in un vigneto-giardino di 30 ettari, su di una collina della Val d’Orcia che guarda la terra del Brunello e che ospita un antico casale - Oria appunto - destinato ad un profondo restyling. Appassionati, privati, ma anche piccoli produttori di altri settori potranno investire nel vigneto, prendendone in affido un pezzo (da 200 metri quadri in su) per poi diventarne proprietari. Il progetto avrà al centro lo studio di innovative tecniche di sostenibilità applicate in vigna, una sorta di laboratorio a cielo aperto come culmine professionale del percorso di Cipresso. “Dopo 4 anni - spiega Cipresso - l’investitore riceverà le sue 144 bottiglie e sarà azionista dei 200 metri quadrati di terra. Le persone saranno parte attiva del progetto, senza dover seguire un percorso tradizionale”. (g.p.)

AIUTI ALLE AZIENDE/ AID FOR COMPANIES

PERONOSPORA 2023, AIUTI PER 47 MILIONI DI EURO Quarantasette milioni di euro in aiuti. Sono i fondi solidarietà destinati agli agricoltori colpiti dalla Peronospora nella vendemmia 2023. Andranno a favore delle 30 mila aziende che hanno subito una riduzione di almeno il 30% a causa dell’infezione fungina che ha colpito duramente la scorsa raccolta.

“Tramite Agea abbiamo messo a disposizione tutto ciò che potevamo per sostenere in particolare le piccole e medie imprese, che sono maggiormente vulnerabili rispetto a eventi così distruttivi- spiega il ministro dell’Agricoltura, Francesco Lollobrigida -. Il nostro obiettivo è proteggere il futuro del settore vitivinicolo”. I fondi provengono dalla legge 163/2023 (7 milioni di euro) e ulteriori 40 milioni dal Decreto Agricoltura. Il 40% dei fondi sarà erogato a tutte le aziende richiedenti, mentre il restante 60% sarà assegnato come quota aggiuntiva alle imprese che hanno adottato misure di prevenzione. (g.p.)

DOWNY MILDEW 2023: €47 MILLION IN AID Forty-seven million euros in aid have been allocated to support farmers affected by the 2023 downy mildew outbreak. These solidarity funds will benefit 30,000 businesses that suffered at least a 30% reduction in yield due to the fungal infection, which severely impacted last year’s harvest.

“Through Agea, we have made available everything we could to support small and medium-sized enterprises, which are more vulnerable to such devastating events,” Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida explained. “Our goal is to protect the future of the wine industry.”

The funds come from Law 163/2023 (€7 million) and an additional €40 million from the Agriculture Decree. 40% of the funds will be distributed to all applicant companies, while the remaining 60% will be allocated as an additional share to those businesses that implemented preventive measures.

ROBERTO CIPRESSO’S NEW CHALLENGE: ORIA Oria is the name of the new project by winemaker Roberto Cipresso, based in Tuscany, in Montalcino, where he currently lives.

Together with his partner and friend, Martin Iglesias, the Venetian oenologist is launching an ambitious venture: planting 140 unique clones of Sangiovese from all over the world in a 30-hectare vineyard garden on a hill in Val d’Orcia. The hill overlooks the land of Brunello and houses an ancient farmhouse—Oria—slated for a complete renovation.

Wine enthusiasts, private investors, and even small producers from other sectors will have the opportunity to invest in the vineyard, leasing sections of land (from 200 square meters and up), and eventually become owners. The project will focus on studying innovative sustainability techniques in viticulture, transforming the vineyard into an open-air laboratory, and the culmination of Cipresso’s professional journey. “After four years,” Cipresso explains, “the investor will receive their 144 bottles and will be a shareholder of the 200 square meters of land. People will be actively involved in the project without having to follow a traditional path.”

VENDEMMIA: +8% SUL 2023 E QUALITÀ INCORAGGIANTE Per la vendemmia italiana targata 2024 il quantitativo finale stimato è di 41 milioni di ettolitri (fonte Uiv/Assoenologi/Ismea), rispetto ad un 2023 fortemente segnato dall’impatto della peronospora. I numeri restano comunque al di sotto della media degli ultimi cinque anni. L’andamento stagionale è stato caratterizzato da buone piogge nel periodo primaverile, ma anche una forte ondata di calore nel cuore dell’estate - addirittura con forte siccità al sud, specialmente in Sicilia - e poi un settembre altalenante con episodi di maltempo, pioggia e fresco, che in parte ha aiutato ed in parte ripresentato problemi di gestione in vigna, specialmente al nord.

Secondo un’indagine Divulga-Ixè, il 76% dei produttori si attende che la qualità sia superiore alle annate passate. In particolare, per il 57% degli imprenditori intervistati la vendemmia 2024 sarà di buona qualità mentre per il 19% addirittura ottima. Nelle prossime pagine tutti i focus regionali. (g.p.)

HARVEST: +8% OVER 2023 AND ENCOURAGING QUALITY The 2024 Italian grape harvest can be described as mixed. The final estimated yield is showing a strong recovery (a little over 40 million hectoliters, around +8% according to Coldiretti) compared to the severe impact of downy mildew that we saw in 2023.

However, the overall figures will still fall below the average of the last five years.

Seasonal conditions included good rainfall during the spring, but also a significant heatwave in the height of summer, with severe drought in the south, particularly in Sicily. September brought variable weather, with storms, rain, and cooler temperatures, which partly benefited the harvest but also posed challenges for vineyard management, especially in the north.

According to a Divulga-Ixè survey, 76% of producers expect the quality of the wine to surpass previous years. Specifically, 57% of those surveyed believe the 2024 harvest will be of good quality, while 19% anticipate it will be excellent. Regional focuses will be covered in the following pages.

NEW MOMENTUM FOR QUALITY WINE TOURISM Goal: 40 members in 3 years. The Grand Wine Tour, Italy’s first association of wineries aimed at promoting wine tourism, has a new board of directors. Nadia Zenato and Elvira Bortolomiol, serving as vice president and board member, respectively, are now responsible for communications. They are joined by Lapo Mazzei and Alberto Chiarlo, with Giovanni Minetti presiding over the board. Meanwhile, the 8th World Wine Tourism Forum in Armenia outlined the future: attracting Gen Z while not overlooking seniors, focusing on staff training and artificial intelligence, and combating climate change.

DI GIOVANNI PELLICCI Angiolino Maule ha festeggiato quest’anno 70 anni.

Classe 1954 è il padre dei vini naturali italiani, presiede Vinnatur che, dal 2006, unisce i piccoli produttori di vino naturale, provenienti da Italia ed Europa (oggi conta 300 aziende provenienti da dodici diverse nazioni). Da qualche tempo dedica ancora più tempo

al suo amico sassofono. Dopo un’estate rovente, estremamente siccitosa al sud Italia ma anche violentemente piovosa al nord, parlare con lui di vendemmia vuol dire entrare dentro un cambiamento in atto che, solo se miopi, si più imputare esclusivamente al clima.“Sono un ottimista di natura che ama studiare”.

Dice di sé. @ Anche quest’anno ne abbiamo lette di parole associate alla vendemmia, scritte forse con troppa semplicità. Lei come la definisce la vendemmia in Italia?

“Bizzarra! Ma è difficile generalizzare. Solo all’interno

del Veneto, ad esempio, in primavera c’è stata una forte ondata di gelo, che ha danneggiato soprattutto vitigni che germogliano troppo presto. Qui un tempo c’era soprattutto uva Garnanega, medio tardiva, perfetta per questo clima. Ma oggi è quasi dimenticata.

Per fare il Prosecco rosé hanno piantato il Pinot Nero in Pianura Padana, zone dove la rugiada del mattino fa fatica ad asciugarsi: quindi non è solo colpa del clima ma è l’uomo che ne è responsabile”. @ In Francia si espiantano vigneti. In Italia non si riesce a mettere un freno alle Doc e si parla di vini dealcolati. Quale la sua opinione?

“La Francia, come sempre, ci ha anticipato. La loro è una mossa politica: hanno finanziato l’estirpazione di vigneti più in pianura, dove i costi di gestione sono troppi alti e non più economici. Questo accadrà tra qualche anno anche in Italia. Vini dealcolati? Da un punto di vista del mercato attuale sono favorevole ma, attenzione: il rischio è di mettere sul mercato bevande piene di pesticidi, perché ricavate da uve che hanno subito troppi trattamenti durante l’anno, proprio perché da vigneti collocati in zone di pianura”. @ Dalle istituzioni cosa si aspetta?

“La raccomandazione è finanziare di più la ricerca a favore delle piante che già abbiamo nei nostri vigneti.

Le nostre uve autoctone possono tornare ad essere più resistenti come lo erano un tempo. Per farlo serve studiare e tanto. Ma lo si fa sempre meno, anche in agronomia”. @ Dei vitigni resistenti che opinione ha?

“Magari funzionassero! Hanno catalogato circa 4 mila diversi ceppi di funghi diversi di peronospora. Se diamo il tempo alla peronospora il tempo di organizzarsi per attaccare un vigneto intensivo di Piwi, magari lavorato in convenzionale, nel giro di pochi anni saremo punto a capo. A Bolzano c’è un nostro associato che lavora in bio vitigni resistenti ma anche loro devono fare piccoli trattamenti ogni anno”. @ Cosa occorre fare per tutelare la biodiversità dei suoli?

“Dobbiamo evitare l’abbandono dei suoli, innanzitutto. E poi conoscere la microbiologia del suolo è fondamentale per lavorare in questa direzione, in modo che ci siano suoli più arieggiati, con una gestione mirata della pianta fin dalla chioma, evitando mezzi pesanti sui terreni che finiscono con il compattare ulteriormente ed altro ancora. Servirebbe un trattato! Dobbiamo ricordarci che la qualità di un prodotto passa dalla qualità e della quantità di microrganismi nel suolo: la ricerca ci consente di migliorare la qualità”.

WE CAN’T KEEP PLANTING VINEYARDS IN THE PLAINS! Angiolino Maule of Vinnatur talks about how human choices have contributed to the current impact of climate change.

Angiolino Maule, born in 1954, turned 70 this year and is considered the father of natural wines in Italy. Since 2006, he has been the president of Vinnatur, an associ-

ation that unites 300 small natural wine producers from 12 European countries. Maule is also a passionate saxophonist. This year, the harvest has been deeply affected by climate change, with scorching heat in southern Italy and heavy rains in the north. However, Maule believes that we can’t just blame the climate for what we’re seeing—human choices are equally important.

“I’m an optimist by nature who loves to study,” he says about himself. @ What are your thoughts on this year’s harvest in Italy?

“Bizarre! But it’s difficult to generalize. Take Veneto, for example: in spring, there was a severe frost that damaged early budding grape varieties. This area used to be home to Garganega, a mid-late variety perfect for this climate.

But today, it’s almost forgotten. To make rosé Prosecco, Pinot Noir has been planted in the Po Valley, where the morning dew struggles to dry. So, it’s not just the climate that’s to blame—human choices are responsible too.” @ In France, they are uprooting vineyards. In Italy, we struggle to control DOC production and are talking about dealcoholized wines. What’s your opinion on that?

“France, as always, has been ahead of us. Their move is political: they’ve funded the uprooting of vineyards in lowland areas where management costs are too high to be sustainable. This will happen in Italy too in a few years.

As for dealcoholized wines, I’m in favor of them from a market perspective, but we must be careful: the risk is flooding the market with beverages full of pesticides, made from grapes that are treated excessively throughout the year because they come from vineyards in lowland areas.” @ What do you expect from institutions?

“The recommendation is to fund more research into the plants we already have in our vineyards. Our native grapes can become more resistant than today, as they once were. But this requires a lot of study, and unfortunately, agronomy research is happening less and less.” @ What is your opinion on resistant grape varieties?

“If only they worked! About 4,000 different strains of downy mildew fungi have been identified. If we give downy mildew the chance to adapt to a vineyard full of Piwi (fungus-resistant varieties) that’s managed conventionally, in a few years, we’ll be back to square one. In Bolzano, one of our members works organically with resistant varieties, but even they have to do small treatments every year.” @ What steps should be taken to protect soil biodiversity?

“First, we need to prevent soil abandonment. Then, understanding soil microbiology is crucial for working in this direction. We need better-ventilated soils and careful plant management from the canopy down. We should avoid heavy machinery that compacts the soil even further. I could write a whole book on this! We must remember that product quality depends on the quality and quantity of microorganisms in the soil. Research allows us to improve that quality.”

Each year, around 6 million bottles are produced, with 60% exported, primarily to the USA, where these wines hold a strong presence in the premium market. Over the last decade, vineyard areas on Etna have increased by 70%, along with a growing wine tourism sector. However, growth for registered vineyards will be limited to 50 hectares annually over the next three years. Additionally, 20% of wineries are now managed by young people under 41, double the national average.

“The ‘volcanic’ growth of young producers is strengthening the future of a denomination that continues to remain solid and competitive in the international markets.”

Si sono da poco conclusi gli Etna Days, organizzati dal Consorzio Etna DOC, che hanno riunito giornalisti provenienti da tutto il mondo ai piedi del vulcano. La viticoltura dell’Etna rappresenta una delle realtà più affascinanti e storiche del panorama enologico italiano. Il territorio etneo si sviluppa su quattro versanti, con un vigneto di 1.500 ettari distribuito in 20 comuni e 133 contrade. L’Etna DOC, istituita nel 1968, è stata la prima denominazione riconosciuta in Sicilia e una delle pioniere a livello nazionale. Il Consorzio di tutela, che rappresenta il 90% del potenziale produttivo dell’area, raggruppa 220 aziende. Le principali varietà coltivate includono Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio e Carricante, che danno vita a vini rossi e bianchi di grande eleganza e struttura, autentica espressione del territorio vulcanico. Ogni anno si producono circa 6 milioni di bottiglie, con il 60% esportato, soprattutto negli Usa, dove i vini mantengono una forte presenza nella fascia alta del mercato. Negli ultimi 10 anni, le superfici vitate sull’Etna hanno segnato un aumento del 70%, con un enoturismo in forte espansione, ma sarà contingentata la crescita per il prossimo triennio dei vigneti iscritti, con limite di 50 ettari annui. Inoltre, il 20% delle aziende vinicole è ora gestito da giovani under 41, il doppio della media nazionale.
