CITY OF WELLS

ILLUMINATED CARNIVAL Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. It’s a warm welcome to you all, braving the winter weather as the Carnival comes to our beautiful City of Wells. Hopefully there will be no snow as we are a week later this year, due to the changes by another carnival town on the winter circuit. However, we have another fantastic show for you tonight and the committee hope you will enjoy the procession as it passes you by. You won’t see anything like this anywhere else in the world, as the thousands of volunteers who have been busy all year raising money to build their carts. Please do applaud them for their efforts in entertaining you tonight.

Message from our President

Many thanks,

Welcome to the 2015 Wells Carnival. We have been celebrating the carnival in Wells for over 100 years and you would think by now that we had it right. However, the local authority are always moving the goal posts and putting more stress and strain on our, already, over worked committee. With the continued support of the many people who help us put the show on the road, we will continue to give you, the public, the best night of your lives. Like the Olympics and the Rugby World Cup, we could not do this without our volunteers and would like to have it put on record how grateful we are for their support. To you, the public, you can do your bit by giving as generously as you can to our official collectors. A couple of pounds from each of your party would be a grateful amount considering the spectacular show you are watching. Please stay safe and do not throw your coins at the carts but place into the tins provided. Let’s have the best year yet and keep this tradition alive in our beautiful city.

Chairman, Wells City Carnival Ltd

Maurice Day (Hon. President)

Once again, the clubs have some really stunning and mind blowing showcases for you to enjoy. Music, Lights, Action! As always, we ask to fill our collection buckets and vehicles with as much as you can afford to help our deserving local charities, to which we distribute every year. Every penny counts, so please do help. Please make sure you keep a safe distance from the entries and overall stay safe on the evening. We hope you enjoy the Carnival and come back again in the future.

COBRA CLUB Cobra is a Wells carnival club based at the Tramways. They are grateful to have the luxury of building their entries at the Butler Carnival Park in Glastonbury. Cobra was started in 1992 by Vince Graham and several others. Vince has seen the club grow each year and move from strength to strength, and is now the Club Chairman and main tractor driver alongside Steve George and Jamie Stephens. This years’ entry, designed by Mathew Graham, takes you back to the 18th Century in Transylvania, Romania. Count Dracula is hosting his annual masquerade ball where all the vampires in the kingdom flock to celebrate this yearly event. Cobra members are dressed in exquisite costumes and you to join them in Bran castle where the chandeliers spin and the roof rocks. Participating on the cart this year are; Matt Jennings, Luke Coward, Emily Loxton, Casey Davis, Joe Harris, Ed Kelly, Sarah Townsend, Jennie Davis, John Holdsworth, Chelcie Hole, Charlotte Serpis, Ebony Gibbings, Paul Addicott, Tom Rayner, Laura Burfield and Simon Melluish. Behind the scenes this year are Vince Graham, Jamie Stephens, Steve George, Mathew Graham, Julie Coward, Trevor Cook, Chris Smith, Stu England, Joy Melluish, Gemma Jones, Nath Toner, Ann Zebedee, Vicki Graham and Ken Zebedee. Costumes this year, have been created by Julie Coward and Emily Loxton, and the choreography was produced by Vicki Graham, Matt Jennings, Emily Loxton with support from all club members. This year’s music is Dracula’s Tango by Toto Coelo. Cobra would like to thank all their non - members for their continuous support. With special thanks to Dave Gibbons, Glen Graham, JVA Sunseekers, Oatley Construction LTD and Titch Masters.

Cobra spend a lot of time each year fundraising to help build their entries. They attend many events throughout the year such as The Godney Gathering and Glastonbury Festival and perform stewarding duties. However their main events are in the form of children’s inflatables. Cobra have a wide range of inflatables which members take to many summer fetes around the area. They are also available for private hire. For more information about any of their inflatables please contact Simon Melluish 07946867103. Last year saw Cobra partying back in the 70s with their entry Disco Fever. All members had a extremely enjoyable year with funky costumes and high platform shoes.

GLOBE CLUB

IC-A-DJ

Globe Carnival Club, Wells, Feature Class Under The Sea Over the past few years the members of Globe Carnival Club have been working very hard behind the scenes to upgrade the existing trailers, towing vehicles and building facilities, and now the fruits of that hard work are paying off as they take you on an all singing, all dancing trip down to the bottom of the ocean. Their 2015 entry ‘Under The Sea’ is arguably one of their most ambitious to date and features moving Dolphins, Sea Horses, Octopuses and Star fish as well as the cart performers riding anchors being raised and lowered from the ships above whilst dancing to the uplifting tune of ‘Under the Sea’ taken from Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’. So sing along, clap your fins and enjoy all the ocean has to offer and remember as a little red crab once said ‘Darling it’s better down where it’s wetter’. The Globe are now the only club to meet and build close to the City of Wells. They’re always on the lookout for new members to keep the spirit of carnival and the Wells carnival tradition going. Prospective new members should give Sue Barber a ring on 01761 418320 and come down and meet us at Wells football club every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month.

MENDIP VALE CLUB Mendip Vale Carnival Club are celebrating their 50thanniversary this year, which would normally warrant a big entry and colourful write up for the local wells carnival programme. unfortunately this milestone won’t be marked with the standard of entry they hoped to present. The building within which they construct their annual entry for the Guy Fawkes Carnivals, to be found alongside those of five other clubs at the Butler Carnival Park has, uniquely among the counties carnival clubs, been re-classified by Mendip District Council as a commercial vehicle repair workshop as opposed to the previous exempt from business rates agricultural storage building status. Since 2011 club members have been negotiating the level of annual payments required, the final ruling sees an annual bill of around £1500 following charitable rate relief. Backdated payments have resulted in a total bill of over £8000 this year. Although the club has been awarded certain reliefs from the local council, the year

has been a huge struggle, with club motivation taking a hit by visits from the councils enforcement agencies to their building shed. A spokesman for the club said: “It is a great shame we won’t be able to fully entertain the public who attend the carnivals in Shepton Mallet, Wells and Glastonbury and bring much needed cash into the local economy. This years Sherlock entry will be less than half the length of last years cart which took first place in the Local Feature category at Wells. There are limited opportunities for clubs to raise funds and our fixed costs such as insurance, generator hire, diesel have grown rapidly in recent years, this annual £1500 charge will require the completion of a great deal of fund raising by our volunteers. We decided as a club that the only option was to scale down our entry massively due to the financial situation. But at least we are on the road in some form. Please give us an extra cheer on carnival night and we’ll be back to a full sized entry next year.”

Lucas Talbot is a brave, bubbly 5 year old boy from Wookey who suffers from a life-threatening illness known as congenital heart defect (CHD). Lucas and his family have asked for your help to change his life, by fundraising money to fund for a brand new wheelchair and suction pump. Lucas spent his first nine weeks fighting for life and underwent major cardiac surgery to insert a shunt into his heart, helping to supply blood to his lungs. It became apparent that although the operation was successful, in the words of his surgeon, “It was too successful”, causing a rush of blood to his lungs. Patricia and her family have raised more than £10,000 for Bristol Children’s Hospital and the British Heart Foundation and this is the first time they have needed the public’s help to fund any equipment for Lucas. Consequently the surgeons had to close ICU and perform emergency surgery on the ward to seal off a valve in his heart and stop his lungs flooding with blood. Other complications followed the second surgery and

Lucas has been left needing a tracheotomy to breathe. He requires 24-hour care from his family and a close medical team of experts and every time he leaves the house, Patricia has to pack a variety of essentials in case anything happens. This makes it hard for Lucas, as he just wants to be like every other five-year-old – so by receiving his new chair it has made things a lot easier. Lucas’s Mum and Dad, Patricia 29, and Dale 34, are thrilled that they have been able to pay for the new chair and can’t say thank you enough and are very grateful for everyone’s generosity. They aimed to raise £3,500 and with any extra funds left over where to help to go towards the travel expenses to his hospital appointments in London and Bristol, and will also help to go towards any future equipment that Lucas may need in the future. The wheelchair cost £2,900 without delivery and the rest of the money they wanted to raise was for a portable suction machine, which Lucas requires to keep his airways safe. The wheelchair which reclines has a head rest and is fully adjustable to his needs. It will not only make a huge difference to him and his independence, but if he’s tired he can sleep as well as still being included with everyone. Wells Carnival Committee and other organisations and individuals have helped to raise more than £4,500 allowing Lucas and his Family hit their target. Support is still rolling in to help Lucas and his family to boost funds even further and help pay for future equipment.
