EASY TO EXPLORE Although the number of things to see and do in Exeter may seem overwhelming, the city is split into four areas allowing you to explore to your heart’s content without missing out on anything. The city is relatively small, so it is easy to navigate around and you can very quickly get from one place to another. For those of you wanting to enjoy gentle walks or a spot of shopping, take advantage of the walking trails and the multitude of shops that can be found in the city. If you fancy something a bit more energetic, make sure to stop off in the quayside where you’ll find boat trips and organisations offering a range of watersports allowing you to explore the city from the water. Back in the early days of the city, Exeter’s position on the River Exe led to it becoming a popular place for trade and industry, these days, it offers picturesque views, amazing sea food and waters perfect for kayaking and paddle boarding.

Right in the centre of the city you’ll find Exeter Cathedral, one of the most popular attractions in the whole of Devon. Visitors can take advantage of free tours of the Cathedral site and there are options to take a tour of the roof too, giving you a unique and exciting way to explore the city from above. IT’S THE PLACE TO STAY!

EXPLORE MID DEVON’S HISTORY

While you stay in Mid Devon, enjoy rolling hills, meandering river valleys and secluded woodland. Discover heritage in abundance, browse unique, independent shops and savour award-winning local produce from the many farm shops and eateries. You can easily entertain the family no matter the weather, with a wide variety of attractions, country gardens and local arts events. If you want to explore wider Devon, Mid Devon is the place to stay – with its central location you can experience the north and south coast or lose yourself in the wilderness of Dartmoor or Exmoor, all just a stone’s throw away for an afternoon or day trip. Get the real Devon experience and #visitmiddevon.

The quality of Mid Devon’s natural environment is matched by the richness of its history and cultural heritage. Explore historic buildings including Knightshayes Court, a Victorian country house on a grand, gothic scale, Tudor town house, The Walronds, and Crediton Church – a 12C church built on the site of a former Saxon Cathedral. These are just some of Mid Devon’s architectural gems waiting to be discovered. Mid Devon has a number of motte and bailey castles, hidden within the ground. In Chawleigh, to the north of Heywood wood and overlooking the River Taw valley stands the remains of a motte and bailey castle, known as Heywood Castle. Re-take the steps of the Normans and discover this medieval castle, made up of two parts: a raised mound, known as the motte, which would have had a stone or wooden tower, known as the keep on top... (the strongest and securest part of the castle) and an enclosed courtyard, protected by a ditch, overlooked by the motte, known as the bailey.

While you are here, explore the four main areas of Mid Devon: • Tiverton and the Exe Valley - a town full of charm and heritage just waiting to be explored.

www.visitmiddevon.co.uk www.visitdevon.co.uk/mid-devon

• Cullompton and the Culm Valley honeycombed with footpaths, bridleways and cycle trails. • Crediton and the Creedy Valley - a lively market town in the heart of Devon with a rich history and vibrant arts scene. • Bampton and the Exmoor Fringe - a historic charter town nestled on the edge of Exmoor National Park with a bustling centre. FAMILY DAYS OUT From popular tourist attractions to play parks, there’s plenty in Plymouth for the whole family to enjoy, whatever the weather! With big and small kids entertained, you can relax and make happy memories together. Marvel at the wonders of the underwater world at the National Marine Aquarium. Over 4,000 marine animals live here, including sharks, jellyfish and Friday, the Green Turtle! Snap a selfie with a stingray and look out for sand tiger sharks in the Atlantic Ocean exhibit, the deepest in the UK with over 2million litres of water. If you’re looking for a walk on the wild side, then head to Dartmoor Zoo, a short drive from Plymouth city centre. The zoo is home to the largest collection of big cats in the region with lions, tigers and cheetah, as well as being home to monkeys, wolves, bears and much more. www.visitplymouth.co.uk www.visitdevon.co.uk/plymouth

Food & Drink Devon is a county full of gastronomical delights, with fantastic producers, award winning restaurants and delicious local delicacies you can always find something to delight the senses.

We cannot talk about the fantastic food available in Devon without mentioning the Seafood Coast. The waters around Brixham are home to a wide variety of marine life, including Dover sole, lemon sole, lobster, cuttlefish, hake, Brixham crab and Elberry Cove Mussels. With so much on offer it’s hardly surprising that the Brixham Fish Market is world renowned and provides fresh caught fish and seafood to some of the nation’s best chefs and restaurants. The busy local fleet of fishing boats bring in £40million worth of fish every year and many of the best examples of these delicious ingredients stay right here in Devon for residents and visitors alike to enjoy in the county’s excellent restaurants. What seaside holiday would be complete without a classic English fish and chips? Alongside the much-loved battered beauty you can also find some of the UK’s top restaurants, with the day’s catch often gracing the tables of Michelin-starred establishments and award winning Devon restaurants. Once you’ve enjoyed your delicious seafood treat you will surely need a sweet treat and what could be better than a traditional Devon cream tea? Some form of the Devonshire cream tea has been eaten in Devon since the 11th century and

the tradition still holds firm to this day. Devon’s own clotted cream makes the perfect foil to a crumbly scone and sweet decadent jam. This sweet treat can be enjoyed almost anywhere in Devon from the humble seaside café to full indulgent afternoon teas at some of the county’s best hotels and restaurants. If you’re out and about in Devon, exploring the South West Coast Path perhaps or wandering the streets of a quaint seaside town, you may fancy a hearty snack. Although our neighbours over the border might wish to lay claim to the pasty it was actually invented in Devon and with vegetarian and vegan options widely available it’s a treat that everyone can enjoy. In the West Country we cannot forget to mention the county’s drink of choice, cider. Devon has perfect apple growing conditions so you’ll find the finest ciders in the country in a variety of flavours and textures from still, sparkling, fruit, rough and more. The pubs, bars and restaurants in the county will all serve locally produced cider but if you’re a real cider fan take a tour of one of the breweries and find out more about how your favourite drink is made and sample some of the more unusual flavours.

FULL OF MYTHS AND LEGENDS THE QUEENS HOTEL

Out of Devon’s two national parks, Dartmoor is the one that most associate with myths and legends, it’s the one that was said to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous Sherlock Holmes story and it isn’t hard to see why it has commanded so much of people’s imaginations. Dartmoor is home to some of the UK’s oldest landscapes and there are plenty of historic remains dating back to the Neolithic period for you to find as you make your way around the moor.

Because of its size, Dartmoor covers a vast amount of Devon and so is easily accessible from many of the county’s popular tourist spots, as well as housing a great many of them within the park boundary itself. The size also means that the moor is different wherever you visit, so is a great destination for a wide range of travellers, whether you are looking for a quiet picnic or a challenging trek.

DISCOVER ARCHAEOLOGICAL REMAINS

WALK AMONGST THE WILDLIFE

As we said, Dartmoor is one of the UK’s oldest sites and is home of the largest number of archaeological remains in Europe. You can discover this and a whole host of interesting historical remains and stories while travelling around the area. Dartmoor is full of ancient villages with beautiful traditional thatched cottages and welcoming country pubs, stone circles adding to the mystical atmosphere and with an abundance of museums and local legends, there is plenty to discover about the moor’s past.

There are more than just ponies to discover on Dartmoor. As well as being a National Park, Dartmoor also has vast areas that are designated as sites of scientific interest, so you’ll find all manner of animals and plant life in the region. The wildlife in the region is largely under the protection of the Devon Wildlife Trust who work hard to conserve the area and are a great resource when finding out more about the various creatures that live on and around the moor.

As well as being a source of great stories, Dartmoor is probably most well-known for its herds of wild ponies. There are fewer sights more iconic than the backdrop of the moor complete with a herd of ponies grazing together. These ponies have been part of the Dartmoor landscape for thousands of years, with some hoof prints having been dated back at least 3,000 years!

Depending where you are in Dartmoor, there are plenty of opportunities to spot everything from interesting flora and fauna, insects, birds and more. On the higher parts of the moor you’ll find a nature reserve where you’ll find butterflies, dragonflies and even cuckoos, while the waterways will give you chance to catch sight of salmon and in the Dart Valley you can easily spot birds of prey and smaller water birds.

DISCOVER THE LEGENDS OF MID DEVON!

Cadbury Castle is also one of the main contenders for being the location of King Arthur Pendragon’s Camelot.

Mid Devon enjoys a variety of folk lore, myths and legends. Enjoy discovering the tales behind our scenic places!

Across the district, head to the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This area is rich with stories of fairyfolk, the most famous of which is the battle of the fairies and the pixies.

Legend tells of a dragon that lives on the extinct volcano near Killerton (a National Trust estate). At night, the dragon flies between two Iron Age hillforts - one at Cadbury Castle and the other at Dolbury Hill - guarding its treasure buried deep within both. The Dragon protects the residents of Fursdon House and locals tell of how, in 1643, the fiery beast scared away Parliamentarian forces from the area. www.visitdevon.co.uk

In a time when fairies ruled the Somerset side, they tried to cross the border to Mid Devon but were fought off by the resident pixies. Apparently the King of the Fairies, Oberon himself, was wounded in this battle. The fairies lost the war and that is why there are only pixies in Devon! www.visitdevon.co.uk/mid-devon discover | VISIT DEVON

SALCOMBE AND KINGSBRIDGE

TEIGNMOUTH BEACHES If you’re looking for beaches to discover, the traditional seaside town of Teignmouth could be your ideal coastal escape. The town is home to two wonderful beaches, with a further two found just across the estuary mouth in Shaldon. Teignmouth’s main beach is a long and sandy expanse offering plenty of space to relax, swim and let the little ones build sand castles. The town’s Victorian pier reaching from the promenade in to the sea offers light entertainment and games for the whole family to enjoy.

Sitting at either end of the Kingsbridge Estuary, at the very south of the county, Salcombe and Kingsbridge are two of South Devon’s most enchanting coastal towns. Their waterfront locations make them a haven for watersports, with kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing and much more available on the estuary or close by.

Teignmouth’s Back Beach, also known as River Beach, is a bustling beach with fishing boats and it’s also where the foot passenger ferry to Shaldon can be found. Close to the beaches there is a children’s play area, crazy golf, Skate Park and green, called The Den, as well as cafés and ice cream shops.

The two town’s streets are lined with boutique stores, high street names, and independent shops, with both having a stylish and laid back atmosphere. The coastline near Salcombe is dotted with picturesque coves and rugged coastal walks where you can enjoy some space to relax or a peaceful spot to watch the action on the water. Whilst Kingsbridge’s location surrounded by the South Devon AONB makes it the perfect destination for a countryside break within easy reach of the coast.

ANCESTRAL TOURISM IN NORTH DEVON Visit North Devon and find your ancestral routes. Discover the village or town that your far-flung family members once called home, and maybe even identify something new about yourself. Whether you come to North Devon with names, locations, or even addresses, local guides can take the information and turn it into something meaningful, piecing together a story of the past. Even if you have very little information, guides can do thorough research before you even arrive in North Devon, using archival material to uncover fragments of the story and eventually, create a bigger picture. An ancestral holiday doesn’t only have to be about history - but there’s something amazing about walking the same moors, beaches or villages that your ancestors once lived and worked in. Combined with the other adventures North Devon has to offer, an ancestral break in North Devon really is unlike anything else. www.visitnorthdevon.com www.visitdevon.co.uk/north-devon

Eco Friendly Devon When you hear the phrase eco-friendly no doubt you think of flimsy paper plates and no heating, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

It’s actually very easy to have an eco-friendly holiday in Devon without having to sacrifice any of the little luxuries that we all look forward to when having a break away, unless of course, you want to go back to basics, which, by all means, you’re more than welcome to do! With rising awareness of climate change and the issues that are surrounding the planet, many of the tourism businesses across Devon are making the conscious effort to be carbon neutral where possible and offering eco-friendly alternatives, so wherever you go in the county, you’ll find plenty of options for eco-friendly accommodation and attractions. There are plenty of ways that businesses across Devon are working to be more eco-friendly, from having solar panels installed on the roof to only using local, sustainable produce in their menus and cutting down on single use plastics, giving you the peace of mind that you are helping to limit your carbon footprint while you’re on holiday. For those of you who are planning to stay a few days, there are plenty of eco-friendly accommodation options for you to choose from, so you aren’t limited to just one or two properties. You’ll find holiday parks, camp sites, cottages, hotels, country clubs and even glamping pods all offering greener breaks, meaning that you can find something that suits your needs and budget and still helps the environment.

When you’re searching for accommodation, you’ll find that pretty much everything from hotels to B&Bs advertise the ways that they are cutting down on their carbon footprint without taking away from their comfortable rooms and exceptional service. It isn’t just the accommodation providers who are taking a stand when it comes to climate change. Devon’s many eateries have been promoting locally sourced food for years, but many of them have also swapped from single use plastics like straws to more sustainable options, like paper and bamboo. Plus, by eating local, you’re helping to not only reduce food miles, but also support the amazing local producers who in turn take care of the incredible landscape, it’s win/win! Many of Devon’s top attractions are working towards creating a more sustainable future for the region. In Plymouth, the Sound has recently been named the UK’s first National Marine Park and the National Marine Aquarium in the city has been working hard as a conservation charity for years. So whether you are looking for an action-packed break taking advantage of the many water sport opportunities, somewhere quiet to relax with a bit of pampering at one of the region’s spas or something else entirely, you need not feel guilty about the impact of your holiday on the environment while you’re here in Devon. www.visitdevon.co.uk

For those of you planning a get away with your pets, make sure to take advantage of the beautiful countryside and many coastal paths and walking trails that can be found around the county. The South West Coast Path takes in many of the popular towns and villages around the coast and North Devon is full of coastal walks that fall into the region’s area of outstanding natural beauty. Wherever you are in Devon, you’re never too far from wide open countryside and many of the pet friendly accommodation providers are based in the midst of open greenery giving you and your dog plenty of chances to explore. While some of these will be based on the national parks and in the areas of outstanding natural beauty, others have their own acres of private land perfect for you and your dogs to get out and about. You’ll never run out of countryside to explore with the National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor. Wherever you are in the county, you’re never too far from one or the other.

Because it is such a popular place for dogs of all shapes and sizes, you’ll find that many of the accommodation providers are pet-friendly as are several of the top attractions and even some of the eateries.

If there’s one thing we can agree on it’s that dogs love beaches, luckily many of the beaches in Devon are dog-friendly. You’ll find that each one has their own regulations on dogs, some of them allow total freedom allowing dogs the chance to go all over the beach all year around, while others have dog friendly sections and others only ban dogs in the busier summer months. Each beach will have sign posts explaining which parts of the beach are available for your dog to play on and of course, your accommodation provider will be able to confirm the rules for nearby beaches, especially if the regulations change depending on the time of year. One great fear that you might have after spending a day out and about with your furry friend is how dirty they get in the mud or the sand – don’t fret, several of the dog friendly accommodation providers are so welcoming of dogs that they provide pet pamper sessions and have special areas that will give your dog the best bath its ever had! We know that when it comes to visiting Devon, not everyone wants to spend their days out in the wilderness or on the beach, especially when the weather is being unkind so why not visit some of the top attractions? Many of them are happy to welcome dogs onsite and those that can’t accommodate them inside the main attraction provide spaces for them to wait for you. The attractions in Devon that are pet friendly include the theme parks, which have day kennels as well as dog friendly areas, some of the farm and animal attractions and even some

One large group of attractions that are dog friendly are those run by the National Trust and there are several of them all over Devon that are happy for dogs on leads to explore their gardens and outdoor spaces. Many of Devon’s eateries are happy to accept dogs too, some of them even provide dog friendly menus so you don’t have to dine alone! Make sure to look out for the dog-friendly ice cream which is available at several of the coastal cafés! www.visitdevon.co.uk

Nature Every corner of this magnificent county has its own natural beauty spots, from wildlife, to open fields to dramatic cliffs. Plus it is an area keen on conservation and protecting the nature around us.

ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE LANDSCAPES YOU WILL EVER SEE

something new, no matter how many times you visit. The dominating feature is the granite outcrops which are thought to be the remains of mountains that once loomed over the area.

Dartmoor is south England’s largest area of moorland and as such has a diverse wildlife and landscape which has everything from bogs, caves, rivers, mountains and of course, wide stretches of open land. Everyone knows about the wild ponies that roam Dartmoor, but it is also home to interesting and rare wildlife including over 28 species of bird.

These days, the region is more hilly than mountainous, and these taller natural structures offer a great viewpoint to see all the wildlife and plants that call Dartmoor home. Make sure to have a camera to hand if you’re visiting during sunrise or sunset as capturing the rays against the trees, hills and ancient structures is truly special.

Because of how diverse the landscape is in Dartmoor, you’re always going to stumble across

DISCOVER THE NATURAL WONDERS Don’t be fooled into thinking that Dartmoor is nothing but open moorland, there are loads of hidden gems for you to visit and explore. One of Dartmoor’s highlights is Lydford Gorge where you’ll find the White Lady Waterfall which stands at 90ft high. This is just one of the many beautiful natural wonders of Dartmoor. If you’re on the lookout for herons and kingfishers, the circular walk that will take you around the gorge is a good place to start and as it is surrounded by woodland, there are plenty of opportunities to spot some of Britain’s favourite wild creatures, including moles and various birds. Other natural wonders that are well worth the visit while on Dartmoor include Wistman’s Wood where trees have been dated back several hundred years. It’s the perfect place for reliving some of the moor’s spookier stories! Bellever Forest and Bellever Tor can also be found in this part of Dartmoor and offer beautiful walks and views of the wider region.

DARTMOOR’S WILD WONDERS

www.visitdevon.co.uk/dartmoor

Much of Dartmoor remains untouched and this makes it the ideal environment for wildlife to flourish. It’s one of the most exciting places for nature lovers to visit all year around. In the spring you’ll find acres of bluebells, buzzing bees and beautiful butterflies, while in the summer the wildflowers are out in full force and as the year draws to a close, the leaves become a wonderful russet colour and when it snows, the various tors and hills have a magical feel to them.

Not only are there plenty of green spaces allowing you to get out and about in nature within the city, but it is also surrounded by countryside, where there are a number of walking and cycling trails as well as the chance to spot some of Britain’s native wildlife. Surrounding Exeter are six Valley Parks which are managed by the Devon Wildlife Trust, these parks give you ample opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of the city centre and relax in a more natural environment. A number of interesting plant and wildlife can be found in the parks around the city including a cherry orchard, a number of orchids, a variety of water birds and newts. EXETER’S NATURAL PLAYGROUND Don’t think that just because Exeter is a city that it isn’t home to wildlife. The Exeter Wild City Project has been running for several years now and aims to enhance and protect the wildlife in the city while also providing opportunities for people to experience Britain’s natural wildlife without having to leave the city. There are a number of animals, birds and plant life that can be found living in and around Exeter. Most notably, Exeter is known for its swift population whose flying displays signal the start of the summer months, the residents are so keen to protect these birds that Exeter was one of the first cities in England to install a swift tower, giving them safe places to nest. It isn’t just swifts and other small birds you can spot during your visit to Exeter, you’ll find everything from foxes to peregrine falcons, so keep your eyes peeled! www.visitdevon.co.uk/exeter

DIVE INTO BRITAIN’S OCEAN CITY You won’t be surprised to learn that the best way to appreciate Plymouth – known as Britain’s Ocean City - is from the water. Whether you’re an experienced seafarer or haven’t quite found your sea legs yet, there’s a chance for everyone to enjoy the breath taking beauty of Plymouth Sound. BEACHES North Devon boasts some of the most beautiful beaches that England has to offer. From Croyde, a surfing mecca of the South known for world-class waves, to the award-winning shores of Woolacombe, there’s a real variety. The beaches range from sandy stretches, winding miles along the coast, to secluded coves, and hidden gems only accessible by meandering through the countryside, promising utter tranquility. Known as England’s Adventure Coast, North Devon’s beaches are where a lot of these adventures begin.

Some, like Westward Ho!, are complete with vibrant seaside villages, while Saunton Sands is known for its beautiful backdrop of sand dunes and dog-friendly reputation. Barricane is renowned for delicious beach curries, served on warm summer evenings, while other, lesser-known spots like Watermouth Bay and Speke’s Mill provide scenic escapes from the tourist hubs. JURASSIC COAST

THE NORTH DEVON BIOSPHERE North Devon is a haven for wildlife - so it’s the perfect destination for nature enthusiasts. The North Devon Biosphere Reserve was the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve to be designated in the UK, and is still only one of six. It’s centered around Braunton Burrows - an ecologically diverse landscape and one of the UK’s largest sand dune systems, which is home to an array of species ranging from insects to

reptiles, flowering plants to nesting birds. The Reserve stretches out of the Burrows and across the estuary of the rivers Taw and Torridge, encompassing other coastal areas, and reaching out as far as Lundy - the UK’s first marine conservation reserve. From beautiful birds to grey seals out on the water, if you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature and discover new wildlife rarely seen in the UK, there’s no better place than North Devon. www.visitnorthdevon.com www.visitdevon.co.uk/north-devon

BIG Devon Events

We may be known for peace, tranquillity and natural beauty ...but we also know how to put on a world-class event here in Devon. There are fantastic Devon events going on across the county every day of the year - but some stand out as our biggest crowd-pleasers, drawing people in their thousands. Whether you’re into music, food, sport, culture or spectacular displays of fireworks and planes you’ll find a big event to tempt you down to Devon. Take a look at our rundown of some of Devon’s biggest events or visit www.visitdevon.co.uk/whats-on to find many more.

BIG music

Throughout the year there’s lots going on for music fans across Devon - see www.visitdevon.co.uk/whats-on for more information. But those that draw the biggest crowds include: Goldcoast Oceanfest (June) - three days of waterfront music and beachsports in Croyde; MTV Crashes Plymouth (July/August) - two days of live chart-topping music and entertainment on Plymouth Hoe; Beautiful Days (August) - a 16,500 capacity family-friendly weekend festival at Escot Park, managed by the Levellers; and watch out for international artists performing at Exeter’s Westpoint venue and Powderham Castle throughout the year.

BIG fireworks Every year in August Plymouth’s waterfront is the scene of the jaw-dropping British Fireworks Championships. This spectacular two-day programme of displays start at dusk, but from early evening there’s also music, entertainment, stalls and a funfair on Plymouth Hoe.

BIG food festivals Devon’s a huge draw for foodies, so it’s unsurprising that some of the UK’s biggest and best annual food festivals happen here. Look out for the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink around Easter, Plymouth’s Flavourfest in June, and the Dartmouth Food Festival, North Devon Foodfest and Powderham Food Festival all in October.

BIG county show The Devon County Show is of course a highlight of the calendar - it’s three days of farming, food and fun in May.

BIG flaming tar barrels For reasons lost in antiquity, every year on November 5 huge flaming tar barrels are carried through the streets of Ottery St Mary – and thousands turn out to see this quite uniquely Devon spectacle.

BIG sports Devon has a huge array of sports events throughout the year. Some of the biggest include regattas such as the Royal Dartmouth and Royal Torbay, national and international rugby fixtures at Sandy Park, home of Exeter Chiefs, and the Tour of Britain cycle race, which draws huge crowds when it passes through Devon.

BIG book festivals Look out for the Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival and Appledore Book Festival, both of which welcome celebrated authors and personalities during September/October.
