ince the last issue of LIFE we’ve had some wonderful community events including the Midsomer Arts Festival in June and Midsomer Norton Fayre Day in July. These and many more smaller events bring together the whole town and I thank those who continue to give their energy to run them.

We also had some challenging times with the road works in and around the town. For many it will be a question of avoiding town to save time or having to put up with it if they can’t. But for those for whom the town is their work place there have been real worries – is my business going to survive? Am I going to have a job if the customers don’t come back?

COMMUNITY TRUST ROUND-UP T

here really is something for everyone in the Midsomer Norton Community Trust’s monthly calendar.

The First Thursday Social is held at Welton Rovers on the First Thursday of every month from 2pm - 5pm and offers a great afternoon out with live music, laughter, bingo and a raffle.

For those who enjoy classical music there is the Paradis Trio Concert on the first Friday of the month, 12.30pm - 1.30pm in the Town Hall Assembly Room. On the 2nd October the theme is Autumn Leaves, the 6th November will see Wartime Songs, and then on the 4th December it is Sleigh Ride in time for the festive season.

The Midsomer Concert Hall has a Piano Festival with performances on the weekend of Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September by Martin Jones and then Brenda Mcdermot. On 18th October we have the Mendip Ensemble, 15th November Vox8 Chamber Choir and finally 13th December Saxophony.

The Live Broadcast Programme goes from strength to strength with the recent move to bring live musicals to Midsomer Norton with the Rocky Horror Show Live, featuring Richard O’Brien and Stephen Fry, on the 17th September. The autumn line up of drama from the National Theatre Live includes: Coriolanus – Thursday 24th September, 7pm.

A final chance to catch 2013’s enthralling production of Shakespeare’s searing tragedy starring Tom Hiddlestone (Avengers, War Horse).

Hamlet – Thursday 15th October 2015, 7pm.

Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy. Britain’s biggest theatrical event of the year.

Of Mice And Men – Thursday 18th November, 7pm. The hit Broadway production of the Steinbeck classic starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd, filmed on stage in New York by National Theatre Live comes to the Somer Valley for one night only.

The Community Cinema recently benefited from a grant from the British Film Institute to buy new chairs for the Assembly Room.

The regular community Cinema offers two screenings – a family showcase with film for young people, followed in the evening by the Showcase.

Home (U, 94 mins) – Saturday 26th September, 2.30pm. In this animated family comedy Crepe hangers come to earth in search for their missing family and meet an adventurous girl who assists in the quest.

Woman in Gold (12A, 109 mins) – Saturday 26th September, 7.30pm. Helen Mirren stars as Maria Altmann, an octogenarian Jewish refugee, who takes on the Austrian government to recover artwork she believes rightfully belongs to her family.

Cinderella (U, 107 mins) – Saturday 24th October, 2.30pm. Disney’s live action retelling of this classic fairytale, directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Far From the Madding Crowd (12A, 119 mins) – Saturday 24th October, 7.30pm. TRUST PARTNERSHIPS The Community Trust has just agreed a working partnership with Age UK to promote the Trust’s programme of events to their members – to complement their Midsomer Norton Area hub for the over 55s. For full details see page 43.

The new Somer Crafts is a co-operative group that will be part of theTrust, running a monthly craft market in Midsomer Norton as well as a range of events and activities for people who make things.

This initiative offers exciting possibilities for growing the town’s market offerings which have proved so popular in other parts of the UK.

MIDSOMER FOOD RETHINKING COOKING So one idea, if there is support, is to not only link in with local traders like the Green Shop in Midsomer Norton to supply herbs etc. on the night of the group’s meetings – but also to encourage Andy Payne at the West Clewes Thursday Market to stock vegetables to match the recipe of the month and offer encouragement there.

A

s our lives get busier and busier, for many the idea of cooking a meal using fresh ingredients has become a rare occurrence or even a distant memory. And yet as we worry about our waist lines the question has to be asked – does it have to be like this?

A group of food enthusiasts recently met to look at ways to promote food and they came up with some interesting ideas based around a monthly food evening called Midsomer Food.

The thinking was that more people would cook if only they were encouraged and the idea of a monthly meeting with a cookery demo and recipe evolved. Then, a bit like a book club, people could take away the recipe and make the dish. There followed more ideas like vegetable of the month, nutritional advice and where to buy ingredients for the recipe on offer.

This then prompted a discussion about how people on the Continent buy their staple groceries for the month at a supermarket but then shop locally for fresh fruit & vegetables, bread and meat on a weekly basis. Whilst in the short term the challenge would be that we’ve lost so many of our local independent suppliers, maybe if more people began buying local produce then the market would develop.

CARNIVAL

MONDAY 16TH NOVEMBER 2015 the successful return of F ollowing Carnival to Midsomer Norton in 2014 everything looks set for a bigger and better event than ever before in 2015.

This year’s event will be based on a shorter route than 2014 – starting in Charlton Road, down Silver Street, up the High Street and ending in Radstock Road. Already entries have been pouring in from prestigious county carnival clubs, eager to give their backing to Midsomer Norton Carnival.

In order to bring Carnival into the heart of our community, the plan this year is to re-launch the traditional idea of Carnival Royalty for places across the Somer Valley.

Already, as well as Midsomer Norton, Peasedown St John, Radstock and Westfield are looking at hosting heats for their own Carnival Queen, King, Prince and Princess.

A grand final is being planned at Midsomer Norton Town Hall for Carnival Royalty winners of the overall event who will travel in the glass coach at the head of the procession on the night of Monday 16th November 2015.

Behind the scenes the Town Hall has been a hive of activity through the summer preparing for Carnival. Whilst the Midsomer

Norton Carnival Association is still organising the event overall, much needed support is coming from the Midsomer Norton Carnival Partnership led by the Community Trust. Running High Events are managing operational planning and logistics and Midsomer Norton & Radstock Rotary are spear heading a sponsorship and promotional campaign to raise funding for the event.

Further plans to improve the horticultural elements in the Garden will begin over the coming months with the hope that next summer will see the space complete its transformation.

A

nyone who has passed the entrance to the Catholic Church may have spotted a new addition to the Garden of Friendship which the Town Council has leased from Downside Abbey as a community space for people to enjoy. A refurbished K6 telephone kiosk sits proudly in the corner of the garden, celebrating the link between the kiosk designer – Sir Giles Gilbert Scott – and his transformation of the old Tithe Barn into a Catholic Church in the early 20th Century. The Church was blessed in May 1913.

The Town Council adopted the telephone box from BT and arranged for it to be refurbished by professional restorers Remember When. The Council is now working with the Royal Institute of British Architects to produce copies of the original plans for the Church and Scott’s designs for the K6 kiosk and these will be displayed in the kiosk.

The south boundary will be renovated to replace the overgrown shrubs, which act as a border with the car park, with a new palisade fence screened by a beech hedge following the granting of planning permission.

MIDSOMER NORTON CIVIC AWARDS 2015 M

idsomer Norton celebrated the work and achievements of its community volunteers on Sunday 14th June, at Midsomer Norton Methodist Church – presenting 12 awards to groups and individuals.

Originally started in 2007 by the Midsomer Norton Society, these awards have developed into an important part of the town’s civic calendar.

The Town Council took on the awards when it was formed in 2011 as a way of recognising the

contribution of local residents who volunteer their time.

“Over the years many people have been honoured for everything from specific projects to a complete lifetime of achievement. What is clear is that, in Midsomer Norton at least, year on year there is no shortage of dedicated individuals and groups to honour”, said Paul Myers, Mayor of Midsomer Norton.

of bands from 12 noon to 9pm. The name denotes the fact that it is a music festival and also it’s in Midsomer Norton.

This is a really positive step, as with all community events it is a question of a good organising team coming together to make it happen – this is how the new Fayre began in 2014. Then, the live stage in the form of StegFest was in the Town Hall but there was no stage in 2015.

Provisional plans are being discussed with the police and licensing authorities to hold the event in the Hollies Gardens with the closure of just the lower High Street from the entrance and exit to the Hollies Gardens. This would provide a space at the heart of the town whilst trying to cause the minimal disruption to local businesses.

Once an outline event plan is in place, funding applications can be made as the aim is that we run it on the basis of a free community event open to all.

In the meantime as our town summer events go from strength to strength the main limiting factor is volunteers. We need people to help organise and run these events which are proving really popular. And it’s not all about sitting on Committees. Just volunteering to be a marshal on the day or help put up tables would be an enormous help. PRESIDENT HANDOVER AT MIDSOMER NORTON AND DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB The Midsomer Norton and District Rotary Club introduced their new president, Ian Hobbs into the role in August.

Rotary are a group of like minded individuals who are committed to working on various projects in our community and overseas. They have a passion to change lives and surroundings for the better enjoyment of all.

It is said that every minute of every day Rotary will touch the lives of millions somewhere in the world. By combining their skills and resources, members of Rotary are able to make a real contribution to the lives of others.

TOMATO SOUP

BLACKBERRY CRUMBLE CAKE

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS

• 2 tablespoons butter or spread • 1 onion, roughly chopped • garlic (optional) • 1 tablespoon plain flour • 600ml chicken or vegetable stock • 450g tomatoes • 1 tablespoon tomato puree • fresh or dried basil (optional) • salt and pepper to taste

• 120g butter, plus extra for greasing • 120g sugar • 2 large eggs • 120g self raising flour • 200g blackberries For the crumble topping • 100g flour • 50g butter, diced • 50g sugar

METHOD

METHOD

1. Melt butter gently in saucepan. Add onion and garlic, fry gently until softened.

1. Preheat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Grease and line a 500g loaf tin.

2. Add a heaped tablespoon of flour, stir and fry on a low heat, until it's a sandy texture. Be careful not to burn!

2. Place the butter in a mixing bowl. Add in the sugar and beat until light and fluffy.

3. Add the stock a little at a time, whisking to keep smooth, until all stock added. Then add tomatoes and tomato puree.

4. Cover and simmer on lowest heat for 1/2 to 1 hour until tomatoes are well and truly softened and the colour is nice and even. Be sure to stir a good few times to prevent sticking.

5. You now need to sieve the soup, pushing with the back of a wooden spoon, stirring and scraping to get all the juices through, then discard the pips, onion and peel.

6. Return to the heat for a minute or so and add basil, salt, and pepper to taste.

3. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating in well with each addition.

4. Fold in 120g self raising flour.

5. Spoon the mixture into the loaf tin, spreading to the edges. Top with the blackberries.

6. Place 100g plain flour in a bowl. Add the butter and rub with your fingertips until the butter is absorbed and the mixture resembles crumbs. Mix in the sugar.

7. Sprinkle the mixture over the blackberries.

8. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before turning out.

ast year it was the Herbs – this year it’s butterflies and bees in Midsomer Norton – delighting residents and visitors alike.

There was a time when posh flowers were the preserve of Spa Towns like Bath and Harrogate.

But not anymore – Midsomer Norton has joined the ranks of these illustrious venues thanks to the inspiration of South West In Bloom and sheer hard graft.

Who would have thought 10 years ago the town would have been competing in the South West In Bloom Champion of Champions Category – against Bath, a World Heritage site?

Volunteers worked flat out to put the finishing touches to Midsomer Norton’s entry – washing bus stops and road signs at dawn and litter picking and sweeping till sunset.

On Friday 10th July the town welcomed In Bloom Judge Mr Jon Wheatley, on a day bathed in brilliant sunshine and the town couldn’t have looked better.

During a carefully planned judging tour which took in a private garden, the Somerset & Dorset Railway, the Silver Street Nature Reserve, Withies Bridge, Swallow Housing Trust, the Allotments, St John’s Church, The Skate & Adventure Play Park, Midsomer Norton Methodist Church and Midsomer Norton

Primary School. The tour was rounded off with a walk through the Hollies Gardens, viewing of the River Somer and the 3D Butterflies and Bees.

“This year’s entry is a credit to the In Bloom Committee and all the many community groups and volunteers who have worked so hard over the last 12 months. Going around with the judge I felt very, very proud of our Town and feel confident that we couldn’t have done better”, said Paul Myers, Mayor of Midsomer Norton.

However, the town is up against stiff competition from other South West In Bloom Champion of Champions entrants. Results will be announced on the 24th September.

COLLEGE MERGER CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE SOMER VALLEY

An exciting new series of short courses for adults, from the creative and practical to the academic and career based, is being launched in Bath and in the Somer Valley area this September following the merger of City of Bath College and Norton Radstock College to create the new Bath College. The merger looks set to open up many opportunities to people across Bath and North East Somerset, with an even wider range of courses in more subjects.

For the fourth year the college’s Love2Learn range of courses has grown, offering adult learners the opportunity to acquire new skills which allow them to improve or change their career, or simply for

their own fun and satisfaction. The new programme encourages people of all ages to learn something new and has been designed to fit around people’s busy lifestyles with courses running in the daytime, evening or on Saturdays.

If you are looking to further your career the college offers professional qualifications, such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants diploma, Professional Certificate in marketing and ILM Diplomas in leadership and management.

For a more leisurely course choose from courses in creative areas such as art, craft, photography and cooking, practical areas such as plumbing, woodwork or stitch and mend, or useful courses such as languages and selling on eBay. On the 1st July Midsomer Norton welcomed Writhlington Sports Trust to the town when it officially took over the Leisure Centre under an asset transfer from B&NES. One of the first noticeable changes has been the renaming of the centre from the South Wansdyke Leisure Centre to the Midsomer Norton Sports Centre. Within just days of the Trust taking over, the gym had not only been kitted out with £180,000 of new equipment but it had been completely repainted and new flooring installed.

Writhlington Trust has given a commitment to the Town Council, who now have a seat on the Trust’s Board of Trustees, that this is the shape of things to come for not just the Sports Centre building but also the Gullock Tyning toilets and the Somer Valley Skate and Adventure Play Park.

So what we’re doing is to launch a Somer Valley Chamber for all businesses across the valley – from Westfield to Timsbury and from large employers to sole traders and those working from home. We’re also joining forces with the Somerset Chambers of Commerce which will mean that we will have so much more to offer our members”.

Somer Valley Chamber meetings will be held at the newly named Somer Valley Campus of Bath College in Westfield (the old Norton Radstock College). A strong working partnership between the College and the business community is seen as crucial in developing the local skills base.

At the same time, Somer Valley Chamber Hubs are being considered for businesses wanting to have additional locally focused meetings in Paulton, Peasedown St John, Midsomer Norton, Westfield and Radstock. So whilst issues like transport , skills requirements and Superfast Broadband can be discussed with members from across the valley at the main meetings, things like hanging baskets can be tackled in local Hub meetings.

“There’s such a lot we can achieve by simply sharing our skills, finding out more about potential customers and suppliers on our door step and above all ensuring that businesses have a voice if we are to unlock the economic potential of the Somer Valley”, said Tina Veater.

BUTTERFLY AND BUG WALK The Friends of Silver Street Nature Reserve held their annual event in the reserve where they showed visitors the insects, bugs and other similar life which lives there. They particularly welcomed children to the event and gave them spy-pots so that they could be shown how to carefully trap their finds to inspect them and see how interesting and often very beautiful they are.

An exciting find was a Roesel's Bush-cricket which Ann Mead and her wildlife group had already seen at another location in Midsomer Norton and so Ann was able to positively identify it. This has always been a rare species

only to be found in some south coast locations and it has been gradually moving north of its range. This has been the case with other insect species in the United Kingdom and is almost certainly owing to climate change.

The event was well attended with some young families with children plus the usual members who attend these events. They started at eleven o'clock and spent nearly three hours exploring the reserve, its meadow and the pond area which the young children seemed to enjoy.

The chairman thanked Ann for arranging such a successful event which was enjoyed by all.

£200 WORTH OF REWARDS

FOR FOOD RECYCLING I

f you live in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire and you recycle your food, you could be rewarded with a £50 voucher to spend with a retailer of your choice.

Every week from 29 June to 18 March, one resident from each of the four West of England unitary authority areas will be rewarded with a £50 voucher just for recycling their food.

To take part, all you need to do is put your food out for recycling regularly. Make sure you label it clearly with your address and put it out by 7am on your collection day and you may be randomly selected to win a reward. The more times you put it out, the more chances you have to win.

The project has been funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government’s £5million Recycling Reward Scheme, following a successful bid by Bath & North East Somerset Council.

Cllr Martin Veal (Conservative, Bathavon North), Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said: "Leading the four local unitaries in securing extra Government funding both fulfils our recycling pledges and secures an extra funding reward for the West of England partnership. In 2014-15 we recycled nearly half our rubbish in Bath and North East Somerset, an excellent effort."

“Food recycling is particularly important because it can be turned into electricity, heat and fertiliser using the process of anaerobic digestion giving us cleaner, greener and healthier communities."

To start recycling your food, contact your local Council who will supply you with a caddy to store food in your kitchen and a larger lockable bin to put the food out for collection. You can put out any

uneaten food including meat and fish, bones, bread and cakes, teabags, vegetable peelings and food that has gone past its ‘use buy’ date (please remove any packaging first).

Cllr Peter Bryant, North Somerset Council’s executive member whose portfolio includes recycling, said: “North Somerset Council has the best recycling rate of 60% in the country when compared with all unitary authorities (apart from Rutland with a population of only 38,000!). We want to improve that rate by staying ahead of the game and therefore we are delighted with the latest scheme to encourage those who have been reluctant to participate in recycling to join the rest of us and achieve an even higher percentage.”

Cllr Heather Goddard, Chair of South Gloucestershire Council’s Communities Committee, said: “The Feed Me and Win campaign is a great opportunity to promote awareness of the food recycling service and will encourage residents to make the most of the services available to them.

In South Gloucestershire 23 per cent of waste in the average household black bin is food waste and therefore is a priority for us to make sure this is diverted into recycling collections. This is better for the environment and will help us to reach our recycling target of 50 per cent by 2020.”

Councillor Daniella Radice, Bristol’s Assistant Mayor for Neighbourhoods with responsibility for recycling, said: “I am delighted that Bristol is taking part in this reward scheme, as it offers people an incentive to change their habits and help protect the environment.

“It is time to change our relationship with waste, and there is no better time to do this than during our year as European Green Capital.”

TOP UP YOUR TANK Local charity West of England Rural Network is advising householders to top up their domestic oil tanks before expected price rises in autumn and winter. The charity runs a community oil buying scheme which aims to save local people money on their oil bills by placing a collective order once a month. Scheme co-ordinator Jill Baker says “oil prices tend to rise in autumn and winter as demand increases. By placing a single large order we can negotiate with suppliers and everyone pays less.”

The West of England Rural Network are able to offer free memberships to their Community Oil Buying Scheme (normally £20/year) to anyone over 70 living in the West of England who

uses domestic heating oil. This is thanks to a second grant awarded by Quartet Community Foundation from their ‘Surviving Winter’ fund.

The scheme is open to all residents of Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Bristol. Local community buildings such as village halls, schools and churches can also benefit from the scheme, as well as businesses such as farms, shops and offices.

The scheme works by using the buying power of a large order to negotiate with all the suppliers who serve our area. The negotiated price is typically 4.5p less than the average price quoted and most members save around £120 per year. s the days get shorter there is still a lot going on at the library. You do not need to be a member to come along to our events and use our computers, but joining is free and only takes a few minutes and gives you access to our books, DVDs and spoken word.

Our computers are now FREE for everyone. If you want to research information, print a document, check your email, search for jobs or complete an online form, you can book our computers for up to 2 hours at a time at no cost. Library members can also use our 30 minute quick access computers. The library has free WiFi.

After Hours is our programme of evening music and events, most of which are free. See ‘What’s On’ section for details of our music events on the fourth Tuesday of the month, and a talk by the well-known local author Janet Tanner on 13th October. New events are being added all the time, so drop by to check out additions to our programme, or use the contact details below.

Staff can help with book suggestions and books can be ordered for a £1 fee (free for children). ‘Poetry Liaisons’ nights when poets and poetry-lovers can share their own work or just listen, often with a guest poet attending. .

TWINNING EXCHANGE 2015

AMBARÈS ET LAGRAVE T

his year’s twinning exchange with Ambarès et Lagrave saw nineteen people travel to France on the 23rd August for nine days to stay with host families.

During the exchange there is a combination of group activities and private time spent with exchange families – the latter involving either chilling out, visiting places or visiting neighbours, families and friends for meals. Overall it’s a wonderful way to discover French life for all ages.

Just to give an example of what’s involved, the exchange began with a French cooking workshop

at the end of which the group had a meal of their afternoon's work. This was followed on Tuesday by a day visiting Cognac – which was about 90 minutes away by coach. The group took a trip down the Charente in a tradition ‘gabarre’ – the all wooden boats which traditionally carried goods up and down the river before the railways. In the afternoon there was a visit the Cognac Museum where everyone learned the history and theory of how this world famous drink is made. The day was rounded off with a visit to 300 a year old distillery where the group tasted the various types of cognac and pineau.

Friday began with the traditional visit to the local French market in Ambarès before a trip to the fabulous Bordeaux Opera House. The day rounded off with the Twinning Dinner Dance where after dinner English and French danced the night away.

The rest of the time on Saturday was free for families – with a small party visiting Vivonne – see the next story.

Wednesday saw a trip to the Museum of Aquitaine where the historical links between Bordeaux and England were related during a guided tour. A high point was seeing a tomb effigy of a Knight, similar to the Midsomer Norton tomb effigy. In the evening there was a visit to the home of Comte de Pontac, Chateau Peychaud for the Civic Reception.

After speeches and the exchange of gifts everyone tasted wine from the estate vineyard and enjoyed the largest cheeseboard in history – including many local French cheeses.

In a vain attempt to run off some calories, Thursday began with a games/sports day with a picnic lunch where a good time was had by all. In the afternoon was free time except for the two Mayors and Association Committees who met to discuss ways to involve more people in the twinning exchange – particularly young people and families.

VISIT TO VIVONNE 13TH CENTURY FRENCH TWINNING CONNECTIONS

Hugh de Vivonia held at some point the titles not only of Baron of Chewton and Sheriff of Somerset and Dorset, but was sometime Steward of Poitou and Seneschal of Gascony. But whenever it was that Hugh de Vivonia served as Seneschal there, he was for the duration of his service, in effect, viceroy for the king.

Paul and Monica met with Maurice Ramblière, town Mayor, in Vivonne on the 29th August 2015. Until being contacted Vivonne had no idea they had a connection in the 13th century with Midsomer Norton. After a wonderful meeting there was a tour of the town.

This year’s French Twinning Exchange offered an opportunity for Paul Myers and Monica Evans to pursue research into Hugh de Vivonia who held the manor of Midsomer Norton in the 13th century.

During the research, which has been on-going for the last three years, Monica looked up the Latin for ‘Vivonia’ in a French road atlas and there was only one listing of ‘Vivonne’ located a dozen kilometres from Poitiers.

It is thanks to Hugh de Vivonia that for one brief period at least during the 13th century we have excellent first-hand documents of great significance for the future development of Midsomer Norton. In April 1242 King Henry III is recorded as granting to Hugh de Vivonia and his heirs the right to hold a weekly Thursday market at his manor of Norton - ‘unum mercatum apud manerium suum de Norton’. Then in August 1248 a second, much more weighty charter was granted and confirmed by Henry III to ‘our well-esteemed and loyal Hugh de Vivonia that he and his heirs in perpetuity may have a fair at his Manor of Midsomer Norton’ - ‘unam feriam in manerio suo de Midsomeres Norton’.

Sadly all Midsomer Norton’s history falls into confusion when Hugh de Vivonia’s male heir, William de Fortibus died young, leaving only four underage daughters as wards of court to be bartered in the marriage game by various lords, in England and in France. So research continues to unravel the tangle of inheritance.

idsomer Norton will be honouring Lance Sergeant Oliver Brooks VC on Thursday 8th October at 8pm with a history slide speaker evening by the Midsomer Norton Society at the Town Hall Assembly Room. This date marks the date of his brave act in Loos in 1915, when on his own initiative, he led a party of bombers in the most determined manner and succeeded in regaining a position of lost ground.

Oliver Brooks lived in Midsomer Norton, firstly in Welton at Belle Vue, before moving to 3 Burlington Road in 1913. The original Midsomer Norton Urban District Council presented the returning hero with a gold watch and chain along with a framed Certificate with the following citation: “We the undersigned on behalf of the Midsomer Norton Urban District Council and the inhabitants of the Urban District and Parish of Midsomer Norton heartily congratulate Lance Sergeant Oliver Brooks VC of the 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, who has received the Victoria Cross from the hands of His Majesty the King for most conspicuous bravery at Loos on the 8th October 1915, The signal bravery displayed by the noncommissioned officer in the midst of a hail of bombs from the Germans, was of the very first order, and the complete success attained in a very dangerous undertaking was entirely due to his absolute fearlessness, presence of mind and promptitude. And we are proud to think that we may claim as a fellow townsman a noncommissioned officer who has attained such a signal distinction. 13th December 1915�

celebrate the famous moment when Oliver Books was decorated by King George V, who at the time was recovering in bed from fall from his horse.

Oliver Brooks returned to Midsomer Norton in December 1915 to a tumultuous welcome.

Plans were made in November 1999 by Norton Radstock Town Council to put up a plaque, but these never materialised. The present Midsomer Norton Town Council was therefore delighted when the Midsomer Norton Society designed and donated a fine framed tribute to Oliver Books including a citation based on the original of 1915 and photographs in July 2014. More recently the Town Council has commissioned a painting of Oliver Books VC by a local artist which will be unveiled at a date to be announced.

MONTHLY ALL-IN SERVICES At Welton Baptist Church we strive to include everyone of all ages and stages in our All In Services, which are held once a month at Somervale School.

A small team of dedicated people plan and lead the service and aim to include a variety of ways to deliver the theme for the morning service.

We have a very talented Lighthouse Drama group who perform short sketches. Our worship band lead us in hymns and songs, both old and new.

ed by a small steering group chaired by Martyn Plant, FFSV was launched in the Town Hall at a public meeting on January 29 2015 as a non-political, law abiding group aiming to raise awareness in local communities of the potential impact of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for shale oil and/or coal bed methane (CBM) extraction under the Petroleum Exploration Drilling Licence (PEDL) No 227 held by UK Methane, covering the Mendips and N E Somerset.

Encouraged by the interest shown, the steering group held two further public meetings in March and April; short films shown at each meeting depicted the major problems experienced from fracking in Australia and the USA and news came in of major countries imposing moratoriums on this controversial industrialised extraction.

Meanwhile, the steering group was developing invaluable links with neighbouring frack-free groups which had amassed a wealth of knowledge on the complex geology of the Mendips with its ancient caves and underground springs feeding public water supplies via the Chew Valley reservoir and Bath City’s hot springs. Bristol Water, Wessex Water and the Coal Authority were also made aware of our existence and concerns.

In early April, taking a more pro-active stance. FFSV in liaison with neighbouring groups wrote a detailed letter of its concerns to the Chief Executive of the newly-created Oil & Gas Authority set up by the government to license and regulate onshore oil production. In reply the CEO acknowledged awareness of this area’s complexities but felt the regulatory systems in place were robust. He also advised that UK Methane had relinquished PEDL 227, effective from May 22 2015. Unappeased, the group further petitioned the O&GA to totally withdraw the area from future licensing rounds.

Currently, fracking companies will be allowed to begin the drilling process a year earlier than at present to allow them to test groundwater without planning permission and Secretary of State Amber Rudd has announced some licences will be granted within weeks and others that require additional environmental checks and consultation will be delayed until later in the year.

FFSV is unable, by law, to ascertain the reasons why drilling licences in this area have twice been granted and relinquished but it is hoped that the complexities have had a bearing on the viability of economic production and, therefore, that the area may be excluded.

NEW HUB IN MIDSOMER NORTON FOR OVER 55's

O

ver 55s in the Midsomer Norton area are set to benefit from a new weekly Hub run by Age UK B&NES, supported by local volunteers to be launched on Tuesday 15th September.

The Hub will run every Tuesday except the second Tuesday of the month between 10am and 4pm and will offer a variety of sessions – ranging from gentle exercise to cookery and singing groups at The Masonic Lodge on Redfield Road.

Age UK B&NES will also be working in partnership with the Midsomer Norton Community Trust to promote the wide range of arts performances on offer to the over 55s – see page 4/5. The possibility of relaunching a Classic Cinema is also being considered.

Plans are also in place for social discussion groups, short walks, Gadget Busters sessions and a book club. There will also be regular Information and Advice drop-in sessions at The Hub, where people will be able to find out more about a range of issues such as housing, care, claiming benefits and more.

CHARITY DUCKS HELP THE LOCALS

n Saturday 11th July, hundreds of bright yellow ducks floated down Midsomer Norton’s River Somer. This traditional fundraising event was organised by Lion Alan Denham and fellow lions of Radstock and Midsomer Norton Club, with the proceeds going to Lions local charities. The winner received £50, with £30 and £20 going to the runners up. They are Lorrie Ogle, Karon Kelley and John Crocker. Newly elected Club President, Robert Jamieson, thanked all those Lions who helped at the event, together with members of the local community who supported and gave generously, so helping others.

The duck race was the opening event of the Midsomer Norton Summer Fayre and Lions, together with other community organisations, were present during the afternoon with their Lions tombola. They were also promoting MIAB (Message In A Bottle) which can safeguard vulnerable people in their own homes.

Radstock and Midsomer Norton Lions Membership Chairman, Colin Marsh, welcomed members of the new Peasedown St John club at their meeting on Tuesday 21st July, at the Cricket Club.

FOSSEWAY BOWLS CLUB Fosseway Bowls Club would,like to extend a welcome to any one who will be giving up their contact sport, such as football or rugby, to come to the club and try the game of bowls.

Even though the outdoor season will shortly be coming to an end the members of the club will still be meeting during the close period for many social events as Fosseway is more than just a bowls club. Many activities are staged throughout the year be it summer or winter.

Events planned for the remaining part of this summer are competitions.such as The Admiral's Challenge, An Aussie Evening and the annual charity fund raising evening in November which

has been a feature for a number of years and where the total raised for various charities exceeds ÂŁ20,000.00.

The club has improved its facilities during the summer with an extension to the decking area and new seating. A new covered pergola has been erected which again has enhanced the area for spectators etc.

of nights. On the agenda was a visit to the pretty, flower filled town of Usk, Big Pit and Blaenarvon Iron Works, and a walk part way up Sugar Loaf mountain.

Congratulations go to Jill Toman who was advised in June by the Western Counties Photographic Federation that one of her Monochrome prints that had received a Highly Commended in their Exhibition had been selected to represent the PAGB Inter-Federation Competition. This is highly prestigious and a first for the club.

On the drive home stops were made for photo shoots of a steam engine, a dam and Ebbw Vale which were all very worthwhile and the final stop was at Newport. This proved to be the icing on the cake. Four of the five members climbed 240 feet to the top in such a high winds that the transporter was stopped. They claimed it was the most exciting thing they had ever done. The views were stunning and the whole experience was exhilarating. Suzanne Ladd was thanked for organising the holiday.

With such good weather, members have been out and about the local area with visits to Bradford on Avon, a walk at Chew Valley Lake with a fish and chip supper, Ston Easton Park garden and an evening in our beautiful City of Bath.

Several members attended Bath's Cycle Event which everyone enjoyed very much. The backdrop for this made it very special; also the opportunity to practice sport and movement photographs made it rather different and exciting.

Other evenings were a viewing of WCPF Projected Image Competition, an "It's a Knockout Evening" and the annual skittles match at Tucker's Grave.

For the second time the club was invited to become involved with the Town Fayre by providing an exhibition of members photographs.

This is an ideal shop window for all local clubs and a wonderful day out for everyone concerned.

YOUNG RUGBY AMBASSADOR George West, 15, has been selected to become an RFU Young Ambassador. The Young Rugby Ambassadors programme gives him the opportunity to make a difference in his local club, Midsomer Norton, and get more people enjoying rugby in the lead up to Rugby World Cup 2015.

George, a student at Norton Hill School, was also presented with the Maurice Carter Award at the club's Annual Dinner for his work around the club. He raised enough money to purchase an additional television screen for the club house and has helped organise several social events.

As a Young Ambassador his role will be to encourage young people aged 16-24 from the local community who used to play rugby or would like to start to join the club.

He is also visiting the local schools to help promote and communicate the latest news about the Rugby World Cup. George also organised a Family Tag Fest at Midsomer Norton Rugby Club to help local families get involved with the sport.

Midsomer Norton’s summer of sport saw the Cricket Club take centre stage, following the successful promotion of Welton Rovers and the historic Cup wins secured by the Rugby Club. The Withies Lane side play in the Bristol and Somerset League and expectations were high going into this season, as 1st XI Captain, Nick Potter, told the Sport Show back in April.

Norton narrowly missed out on promotion on the final day of last season and were targeting a top four finish going into the new campaign, meaning a promotion to the new format of the Premier 2 League that will be split between Bristol/ Somerset and Gloucester/Wiltshire.

Despite the dominance of last season, Norton have found consistency hard to come by. A six wicket win away to local rivals Frome in May (Frome CC 1st XI 197 Vs Midsomer Norton CC 1st XI 198-4), was avenged by a home defeat in July (Midsomer Norton CC 1st XI 198 Vs Frome CC 1st XI 206). Runs of victories have been followed up with defeats, leaving Norton in 4th at the time of writing and still uncertain as to where they will be

playing their cricket next season. Recently their in and out form has continued, with the notable exception of an August victory against league leaders Bedminster in a rain affected match at Withies Lane (Midsomer Norton CC 1st XI 133-9 Vs Bedminster CC 1st XI 146).

As the summer comes to an end the Town has already started to turn its attention back to its rugby and football teams, who’ve been back in training since late July. Newly promoted Welton Rovers will be looking to consolidate their place back in the Western League Premier Division, boosted by the fantastic support they received from Nortonians in their promotion run in.

Meanwhile at Norton Down, Midsomer Norton Rugby Club will be hard pressed to match their heroics of last season, when they achieved an unprecedented Cup double winning the Somerset and Bath Combination Vase in the same season.

SCHOOL NEWS: SAYING GOODBYE

O

n the last day of the summer term, St John’s School said ‘goodbye’ to Carolyn Banfield, who came to the school as deputy head teacher and had been the head teacher for the past 17 years. Carolyn was an outstanding head teacher, well respected by her peers, an inspirational leader who brought much to the school in so many ways. Carolyn will be remembered as the head who significantly developed the school resources to enable teaching to be of a very high standard, producing generations of well-rounded students who were well prepared at the end of their time at the school for their secondary education.

She instigated and led many of the school’s new building and rebuilding projects including the nursery provision, the major refurbishment of the Victorian classrooms and the cookery room.

Carolyn led the school with tremendous energy and enthusiasm and has taken the school from strength to strength.

ongratulations are due to Midsomer Norton Town Councillor Amy Purchase, and her family, following the birth of baby daughter, Bea Emily on the 24th July weighing 7lb 7oz.

Amy Purchase was initially co-opted onto the Town Council earlier this year and successfully stood for election in May. As a young mother, Amy can give a welcome perspective on many aspects of Council business relating to younger people and families in the issues they face.

Not only does Amy volunteer for the After School Club at Welton Primary School she is also an active member of the Midsomer Norton & District Carnival Association.

TRANSPARENCY IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT – HOW THE TOWN COUNCIL HAS RESPONDED. The then Government published a new Code for Local Councils and other Public bodies in May 2014 which aimed to make their work more visible to those who they provided a service to. In simple terms, the Code and subsequent legislation made it mandatory for Parish and Town Councils to make information about their expenditure, procurement, ownership of land and grant payments to community groups much more visible.

The Town Council approved plans to publish data in July 2014 since when the Council team has made this available on the Council web site through monthly updates on expenditure, quarterly procurement details and annual information on other categories. Using the web site makes the information widely available although hard copies can be requested from the Council offices.

The Town Council continues to have an external audit carried out on its accounts and by law has to make copies of financial statements and papers available to the residents of the town.
