Jubilee celebrations at Meare The children at Meare Primary School enjoyed a Coronation which saw Kings and Queens crowned and swearing their oaths to the Commonwealth.

The ceremony was performed by Archbishop Driscoll and was followed by a street party in the playground. It was a really lovely event.

Coxley children enjoy the celebrations

Pupils at Coxley Primary School have really entered into the recent celebrations. With the Olympic Torch passing right outside on 22nd May, the school lessons were abandoned for the morning while the children waved their flags and cheered as the Torch made its way via Coxley from Glastonbury to Wells.

This was followed on 1st June by a Jubilee Party. Her Majesty the Queen and members of the royal family joined pupils, parents and younger siblings for a party tea, with super cakes made by generous parents. Her Majesty made a heartfelt speech to her subjects and ceremonially cut the giant cake.

Healthy play times

Music at Ditcheat

The children at St Paul’s Primary School in Shepton Mallet enjoyed a juice bar to add a healthy twist to playtimes with juice donated from the Co-op, as well as a healthy berries themed breakfast club, where the children had a variety of breakfast products that included berries.

The children of Ditcheat Primary School took part in a recent music concert. All of the children took part, some singing, some playing ukuleles, violin, recorders, piano, xylaphones and guitar. Some of these instruments are taught in school and others have been taught elsewhere, and the children were invited to bring their instruments along and play.

Parents were invited to come along to watch and enjoy a lovely afernoon of musical talent, starting with the very young and finishing with the oldest children

Ashcott jubilee picnic The children at Ashcott Primary School and Cheeky Chimps Playgroup had an exciting Jubilee Picnic with flags, bunting and Union Jacks galore! All of the children came to school in red, white and blue creating a colourful scene reminiscent of days gone by. Emotions were stirred as the children stood to sing the National Anthem in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, before all of the staff and children sat down to a delicious picnic together. Many children had made crowns for the occasion as part of a fun week of Jubilee activities.

Ditcheat take the cup

Ditcheat Primary School won the local schools football competition recently which was played at Ansford, their local secondary school. Ditcheat won all their matches against all the seven feeder schools who were there. The success story continued as their team then went on to play against other schools in the district which overall they won. They progressed into county level at Bridgwater and also won that, the team went to the Cadbury Club for the South West Region, again coming through the winners, they then played the National Football Schools at Watford’s training ground. Massive congratulations to the football team! Ditcheat were runners up in the ESFA National Finals played at Watford. They are only the second team in Somerset to ever make it this far. As you can imagine, we are incredibly proud of the whole squad.

Police visit Evercreech

The children from Holly Class at Evercreech Church of England Primary School would like to say thank you to PC Lambert, who paid a visit last week. PC Lambert, who is also a parent at the school, visited the reception class as part of their topic ‘People Who Make a Difference’. The children were fascinated by his uniform but his police car with its lights and sirens was a big hit with Holly Class and Acorns Preschool children alike.

Jubilee party The children and teachers at Butleigh Primary School celebrated the Queens Diamond Jubilee with a royal tea party, games and the coronation from the year 6 children. Everyone had a fantastic time.

Jubilee Tea Party at Shepton Mallet The pupils at St Paul’s Primary School enjoyed an afternoon of dancing, games and food to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Children and staff dressed up in red, white and blue and everyone had a great time.

Hindhayes fire engine visit

Super Schools St Paul’s Primary School enjoyed a Super Schools day with visiting gold medallist Julian Golley – who asked for some volunteers for his demonstration. Many of the children volunteered along with the male teachers Mr Fingleton, Mr Gay and Mr Byrne.

The children completed exercises to raise money and then had their photo taken with Julian. Afterwards Julian gave an inspirational talk about his career, including how he began and how he explored his talents. The money made was shared between Super Schools - supporting future athletes - and St Paul’s School.

The children from year 2 enjoyed learning about the Great Fire of London.

They designed and made fire engines as part of their DT work and had a visit to a fire station to see how things had changed. The children enjoyed themselves and now know all about the story of Pudding Lane.

New Somerset Skills & Learning Brochure Out Now! The new brochure from Somerset Skills & Learning is now out. It contains listings f all their leisure and vocational classes starting in September, plus competitions and information on how Somerset Skills & Learning can get you into work, into an apprenticeship and more.

You may find that you have some more time on your hand in September with children starting pre school or school, and Somerset Skills & Learning can help you use that time productively. Choose a pretty design like our butterflies, or perhaps decorate with Chinese characters for something a little more dramatic!

You will need: A piece of paper about 1m by 20cm, two wide ice lolly sticks, PVA (white) glue, sticky tape, colouring pens.

Decorate your paper with the pens. We went for butterflies and flowers but older children might like to try something more authentic like blossom or calligraphy.

‘Pleat’ the paper into folds about 1 1/2cm wide.

Glue a lolly stick onto each end of the paper. The lolly sticks should stick out about 2cm above the top of the paper.

Next time you visit the beach, comb the shores with your children to gather supplies for your own spectacular beach sculptures! Please note very strong glue is needed to make these sculptures, which, for safety, should only be handled by adults.

You will need: Shells, pebbles, driftwood, or any interesting bits found along the beach Strong glue (we used a hot glue gun) Take a walk along the beach to collect some bits. Look what interesting shapes that you can find. Bring the best of your collection home with you.

Arrange your bits into the shape that you like. Older children, carefully supervised, can glue their creations together. Younger children should ask an adult to glue them together. Leave to dry.

Fabric Flow

Here’s a fabric flower craft which will use up your scraps, provide practice to learn to sew, and create a really pretty display! These flower “yoyos” can be wired as we have done here, or you can glue the flowers onto sticks and stand them in a pot, sew them onto headbands, hats, T-shirts or bags, or stitch a safety pin on the back to make pretty flower brooches, which make lovely little gifts.

You will need: Fabric in 2 coordinating designs, buttons, thread, garden wire.

Cut 2 paper circles about 4 and 6 inches in diameter.

Pin each to one of the pieces of fabric and cut out.

Alternatively draw around cups and saucers onto the fabric.

Cut a piece of thread long enough to go all of the way around the edge of your biggest circle with some spare.

Knot one end and thread the other.

Sew a loose running stitch around the outside of the largest circle, finishing with the thread to the right side of the fabric.

Pull the thread so the fabric gathers. Secure the gap with a few stitches. Knot the fabric and tie off.

Repeat with the smaller circle.

When you have your two yo-yos, layer them up with a button over the top hole. Stitch the button in place going through both yoyos.

Finish off by stitching a length of garden wire to the back, bending the ends into a loop so that they aren’t sharp and dangerous. You can now twist your flower onto a branch or pop it in a vase.

It is always difficult during the summer holidays to find easy and cost effective activities for your children to do to keep them occupied.

Try out some of our ideas :

Throw a garden Olympics party. Create competitions like sack races, tumbling, Frisbee discus throws, and tossing bean bags into a bucket.

Go on a camera scavenger hunt. First choose a theme, like Ten Things That Move or A Dozen Signs of Summer. Then send kids out with cameras (disposable cameras) to grab some images. Encourage them to find creative, funny, and unusual ways to interpret the theme. Pop the photos up on the computer screen or take disposable cameras to a onehour processing shop.

Stage a treasure hunt. First, hide a prize. The prize doesn’t have to be a toy (it could be a cool drink or a packed lunch!). Next, hide clues. For non-readers the clues can be rebus pictures, digital photos, or magazine cutouts. For readers try riddles, short rhymes, or question-based clues. Each one should lead the child to a spot where the next clue is hidden. If you have more than one child let everyone search for clues and figure them out together. Or stage treasure hunts for each child in turn using the collaborative efforts of those who are waiting. Once kids are familiar with treasure hunts they can easily set them up on their own.

The Summer holidays are nearly upon us and its good to get some dates in the diary for some exciting days out for the whole family to enjoy. Beach games are a great way to pass the time when spending the day at the beach.

Whether you are playing a game for one or two, or for a whole team, there is something here for everyone, even the big children at heart.

The whole family is encouraged to get involved and create fun beach games.

Combine this with building sand castles and collecting shells, not to mention, playing in the water and you’re sure to have a memorable day with the children wanting to come back for more.

NAUGHTS AND CROSSES

Draw a grid in the sand; make it three squares by three squares.

Person A uses Naught to mark their spot Person B uses Crosses to mark their spot Each player takes it in turns until someone gets three in a row. It does not matter if it’s from side to side or up or down. You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every game you win, or simply make it the best of three.

SAND MEMORY GAME

You need two people to play this game.

Person A creates a grid in the sand, it’s up to you how big you make it, and we recommend perhaps four squares by four squares.

Then person A, using shells has to create a random pattern by putting the shells in several squares.

Person A should allow person B a minute to look at the grid pattern and then cover it with a beach towel.

Person B then has to draw their own grid and see if they can remember the layout of person A’s grid.

You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every time you get it right, or simply make it the best of three.

WATER BALLOON GAME

Regardless of how many kids there are fill up a water balloon with water and play pass the balloon, picking people randomly to pass it to, however don’t pass throw it high and call out their name, then it’s up to them to catch it. When and if it’s dropped, just fill up another balloon and start again.

BEACH BOWLING GAME

There are two different ways to play this game. You can either make 10 pins by filling up a cup with wet sand and then turn it upside down to make a pin (just like you would make a sand castle).

Or if you prefer you can dig a hole for the pins, allowing the ball to roll into the holes.

Either way you put one in the first row, two in the second row and so on until you have ten pins.

Draw a line in the sand and get each person to have two turns at rolling a ball toward the pins, re-creating the pins each time.

The person who knocks over the most pins, wins, or alternatively the person gets the ball in the highest scoring hole wins (with each hole being worth a different amount).

BEACH OLYMPICS

Depending on the number of kids you have with you at the beach, you could break them up into teams. Then create a list of events, with teams scoring points for each win.

The winning team should have a prize.

Some events you could have included: Three legged race – tie two kids together by the ankles, encouraging them to coordinate their movements to run.

Whichever team makes it to the end first wins.

Long Jump – Draw a line in the sand. Have each kid run up to the line and jump. Whoever jumps the longest distance wins.

Hurdles – Lay a number of items in the sand, twigs, spades, whatever you have handy. Get each child to hop the course, hoping over the items. The kid to do it in the fastest time wins.

Chelsea Keal aged 5 created her own project on the Lingo show, well done Chelsea.

Matteo Cervio Race, Jack Byrne, Harry Chayter and Alfie Baillie all attend the Wells Shotokan Karate Club and they have recently gained their Brown Belts. Well done boys, a fantastic achievement.

Chloe Atkins aged 5 has achieved her swimming certificate in water confidence, great work Chloe, well done.

Berry Wright aged 10 10 took part in a inter schools sporting event at Millfield school and achieved a bronze medal in kayaking. Well done Berry, great work.

AJ Govier aged 7 has been awarded with best achievement in junior singing at Razzmataz theatre school. AJ has also been presented with a certificate for her performing art skills too. Well done AJ, keep up the hard work.

Travis Coward aged Chloe Brine aged 10 10 has achieved his attended a inter school 50 metres swimming sporting event and was award, well done awarded a bronze in the javelin and a gold in Travis, great work. kayaking, well done Chloe.

Ethan Turnball aged 7 has achieved his orange belt in Tae Kwon Do and also a trophy for football in the under 7’s match. Great work Ethan, well done.

Jessica Gerrard aged 8 has achieved her competitive start award in swimming, good work Jessica, well done.

Mollie Spraggon aged 7 has achieved her swimming award and also a rosette from Conquest Equestrian Centre on her horse Chippy. Well done Mollie.

Tom Prettejohn aged 9 has achieved his purple belt in Matt Fiddes martial arts and also took part in a kick boxing competition in Weymouth, good work Tom, well done.

Ellie Board aged 11 has achieved a award in ballet as well as her levels 3,4 and 5 in gymnastics. Well done!

Georgia Chinnock aged 6 took part in the Race for Life and has also achieved an award for dance too.

Layla Keser aged 5 has competed in the Glastonbury road run, well done Layla.

Corey Board aged 10 has achieved his medals for playing as part of Wells Rugby Football Club, Hornets Rugby Football Club and also Winscombe Rugby Football Club. A fantastic achievement Corey, well done.

Eloise Frankland aged 8 has achieved her grade 3 in swimming, well done Eloise.

Jakob Dickens aged 9 has been awarded the most improved player award at Wessex youth Football Club.

Jack Broughton aged 7 Jakob took part in the inter has achieved 8 medals schools sporting event at for karting at Llandow Millfield school and achieved Kart Club. A fantastic a gold in karate and a achievement Jack, keep bronze in the pentathlon. up the great work.

Katie Waters aged 9 has passed her grade 1 exam in flute, well done Katie, keep it up.

Lucy Durston aged 7 has achieved all of her rosettes whilst riding her horse at Alstone Court, well done Lucy, great riding.

Ruby, Madison and Bob have been awarded with the good manners award for their consistent approach to attitude, manners and learning at Meare Primary School. They enjoyed toast with the head teacher to celebrate, well done to you all.

Reegan Bath aged 10 played as part of the Wessex youth under 10 football team and were winners at the Penmill tournament, well done Reegan.

Nico Bosley aged 8 achieved the accolade of being the 1st year 3 boy over the line in the Glastonbury fun run, well done Nico.

Saffron Butler aged 6 has taken part in a tennis tournament in Glastonbury, well done Saffron.

Luke Bird aged 10 attended a football course at Millfield School and was awarded an silver medal for his great attitude and he also completed the Neroche fun run. Great work Luke, well done.

Samuel Gilby aged 8 took part in a sponsored swim at Millfield pool and completed 44 laps as part of a relay team. Well done Samuel.

William Cullen aged 6 has Sophie Keser aged 5 has counted all of the mice at Nothe completed in the Glastonbury Fort I Weymouth as part of a fun run, well done Sophie. challenge, well done William.
