Fathers’ Friday at Castle Primary Wansdyke Play Association were invited to host a “Day of play for a group of dads and their children at Castle Primary School in Keynsham. The day started with two workshops in “risky play” activities (ideas that dads can do again and again in their own time with their children at low cost). Around 50-60 fathers were firstly shown how to light fires in adverse weather conditions, with damp twigs and limited fire lighting equipment. They all managed it, and also all made themselves a cup of tea! Along the way they learnt the basics of risk assessing and managing fires and were able to show these to their children.

The dads and their children were then shown a number of play ideas that involve projectiles - things you can throw, fire, shoot and catapult! All the activities needed a lot of guidance from the dads there to make sure it was all safe for children, and they achieved it taking great care to show the children how to play in a fun but safe way! In the afternoon there was then a big play session, with children and parents freely choosing activities, making up new games, inventing contraptions, building dens and generally having lots of fun.

It was truly brilliant to see and the WPA Community Playworkers at one point said to each other, “We’re not really needed here, the dads are doing all the playwork themselves!”. The day co-incided with Father’s Day on the Sunday and also linked with the BANES Celebrating Fatherhood Campaign.

WPA hopes to take the day at Castle School as a great example of what can be achieved when bringing play into schools. Many schools have struggled to engage fathers in children’s school lives and WPA thinks play might just be the way to do it!

Keynsham Jubilee Fun - Memorial Park

Wansdyke Play Association were invited by Keynsham Town Council to contribute to the Keynsham Jubilee Celebrations on Sunday the 3rd of June. The Town Council, local churches and community groups all joined together to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in Keynsham! WPA have been working in Keynsham for 5 years and have previously had 3 other events in the park – This was their first time using the bandstand and they decided to use it to full effect!

Andrew, Will and Stuart were the play workers for the day and met lots of old and new faces in amongst the heavy rain showers. From 12.30pm onwards they got to work decorating the bandstand, covering the whole area with bunting, and the wall with pictures of the Queen.

Over 25 children and 10 adults came to help, with many more showing up just to Play. 4 children in particular also worked very hard to create a fantastic banner announcing to everyone that they were all there! In between the rain, both children and adults had fantastic games of football with a huge bouncy ball, took part in javelin competitions, and helped spread the word about what WPA are doing. It was a great day and great fun.

The Day the Olympic Torch came to Town The children from Pensford and High Littleton Schools started the day with a quick ‘Flashmob’ outside the Little Theatre in Bath, producing a lot of curiosity from the passers-by. They then headed across to the square alongside Bath Abbey. Starting the dance with the children lying on the ground and sitting on benches next to members of the public led to a lot of intrigue and as the music started, leading to a mass ascent of pigeons, the children rose up to perform. Around 100 spectators appreciated the effort and performance before them.

Their next venue was the South Gate shopping centre, directly outside the Apple store. Having cleared a space to dance, as well as ‘moving on’ a 6 foot chilli, the performance began again, this time to at least 150 shoppers and torch-goers. The children executed their moves almost perfectly, with dancers appearing from the different shops and there was a huge round of applause at the end.

After a lunch break at Parade Gardens, they moved on to Laura Place for their final dance of the day. As the last echoes of ‘No Light, No Light’ were heard along Great Pulteney Street, the torch-bearer came into view. It certainly proved to be a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

TEST THE WATER An observer from Barnados pointed out this week that an autistic child can have up to eighteen separate assessments from various professionals to confirm the diagnosis.

These assessments inevitably focus on the things the child finds difficult – speech, social skills, behaviour, poor concentration and so on.

This process can leave you feeling alienated and grief stricken that your child has no potential, no value and no hope. However, if you can summon up the courage to test the water, you can discover talents in your children you never knew existed.

Courage is vital – it takes a brave parent to embark on a new activity with an autistic child. You can predict the behavioural challenges and anxiety that will occur if things don’t go according to plan.

Realistically, you may not see Olympian prospects beckoning – not when the concentration span is dictated by the timing of the squash and biscuits! You can see the friendship, cooperation, teamwork and most of all the pride and self-confidence that taking part in an activity can bring. So go on, dip your toe in and test the water.

S A E D I X O B LUNCH Homemade sausage rolls 12 sausages 2 slices white bread , whizzed into crumbs 2 tbsp chopped sage 500g pack puff pastry 3 tbsp caramelised onions flour , for dusting 1 egg , lightly beaten 2 tsp sesame seeds Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

Squeeze the meat from the sausages and mix with the crumbs and sage. Halve the pastry into 2 rectangular blocks. On a floured surface, roll each block lengthways only until you have 2 thin sheets, about 20 x 45-50cm.

Thinly spread the onions in a strip over the pastry, leaving a 3cm border along one long-edge of each sheet.

Divide the meat along the onions, shaping into a smooth roll, then brush just the border with beaten egg. Fold excess pastry over the meat and press to stick to the eggy border. Trim this edge, tuck under slightly to hold, then brush all over with egg. Scatter with seeds and slice each roll into 5. Bake on baking sheets for 35-40 mins until golden and cooked through. Once cool, freeze in bags. Defrost overnight in fridge.

Tasty Pasta Salad 250g pasta shapes 140g frozen peas pack parsley , chopped small pack chives , snipped zest and juice 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil Cook the pasta, adding the peas for final 2 mins cooking time. Drain, rinse with cold water to cool, then drain again. Tip into a bowl with the chopped herbs, lemon zest and juice, olive oil and plenty of seasoning and mix well. Cover and chill, spooning out portions as and when. If you’re making this for one person, by days 3 and 4 you’ll need to stir in a little olive oil or something creamy to loosen the pasta.

Choose a pretty design like our butterflies, or perhaps decorate with Chinese characters for something a little more dramatic!

You will need: A piece of paper about 1m by 20cm, two wide ice lolly sticks, PVA (white) glue, sticky tape, colouring pens.

Decorate your paper with the pens. We went for butterflies and flowers but older children might like to try something more authentic like blossom or calligraphy.

‘Pleat’ the paper into folds about 1 1/2cm wide.

Glue a lolly stick onto each end of the paper. The lolly sticks should stick out about 2cm above the top of the paper.

Next time you visit the beach, comb the shores with your children to gather supplies for your own spectacular beach sculptures! Please note very strong glue is needed to make these sculptures, which, for safety, should only be handled by adults.

You will need: Shells, pebbles, driftwood, or any interesting bits found along the beach Strong glue (we used a hot glue gun) Take a walk along the beach to collect some bits. Look what interesting shapes that you can find. Bring the best of your collection home with you.

Arrange your bits into the shape that you like. Older children, carefully supervised, can glue their creations together. Younger children should ask an adult to glue them together. Leave to dry.

Fabric Flow

Here’s a fabric flower craft which will use up your scraps, provide practice to learn to sew, and create a really pretty display! These flower “yoyos” can be wired as we have done here, or you can glue the flowers onto sticks and stand them in a pot, sew them onto headbands, hats, T-shirts or bags, or stitch a safety pin on the back to make pretty flower brooches, which make lovely little gifts.

You will need: Fabric in 2 coordinating designs, buttons, thread, garden wire.

Cut 2 paper circles about 4 and 6 inches in diameter.

Pin each to one of the pieces of fabric and cut out.

Alternatively draw around cups and saucers onto the fabric.

Cut a piece of thread long enough to go all of the way around the edge of your biggest circle with some spare.

Knot one end and thread the other.

Sew a loose running stitch around the outside of the largest circle, finishing with the thread to the right side of the fabric.

Pull the thread so the fabric gathers. Secure the gap with a few stitches. Knot the fabric and tie off.

Repeat with the smaller circle.

When you have your two yo-yos, layer them up with a button over the top hole. Stitch the button in place going through both yoyos.

Finish off by stitching a length of garden wire to the back, bending the ends into a loop so that they aren’t sharp and dangerous. You can now twist your flower onto a branch or pop it in a vase.

Throw a BYOB party. This is cheap, imagination-driven fun. You wield cutting implements and supply lots of tape. Guests are charged with one simple task: Bring. Your.

Own. Box. Together kids can construct a fort or spaceship or whatever they please out of the boxes, then spend hours playing in it.

There are plenty of other ways to amuse kids with cardboard boxes too.

Make sponge bombs out of cheap household sponges, then soak and use for tossing games.

Unlike water balloons, these will last all summer Take late-night walks. Kids enjoy this even more when they are in charge of the torches.

Encourage grubby fun. Designate an area of the garden where kids can play right in the dirt. They might want to use it to build mountains and valleys for their toy dinosaurs, cars, or action figures. They might want to add water to make mud pies. They might want to dig holes, perhaps looking for archaeological finds.

It is always difficult during the summer holidays to find easy and cost effective activities for your children to do to keep them occupied.

Try out some of our ideas :

Throw a garden Olympics party. Create competitions like sack races, tumbling, Frisbee discus throws, and tossing bean bags into a bucket.

Go on a camera scavenger hunt. First choose a theme, like Ten Things That Move or A Dozen Signs of Summer. Then send kids out with cameras (disposable cameras) to grab some images. Encourage them to find creative, funny, and unusual ways to interpret the theme. Pop the photos up on the computer screen or take disposable cameras to a onehour processing shop.

Stage a treasure hunt. First, hide a prize. The prize doesn’t have to be a toy (it could be a cool drink or a packed lunch!). Next, hide clues. For non-readers the clues can be rebus pictures, digital photos, or magazine cutouts. For readers try riddles, short rhymes, or question-based clues. Each one should lead the child to a spot where the next clue is hidden. If you have more than one child let everyone search for clues and figure them out together. Or stage treasure hunts for each child in turn using the collaborative efforts of those who are waiting. Once kids are familiar with treasure hunts they can easily set them up on their own.

The Summer holidays are nearly upon us and its good to get some dates in the diary for some exciting days out for the whole family to enjoy. According to the met office July and August are set to be sunny and dry so its a great time to put those rain coats and wellies away and get out and about and enjoy the British Summer, whilst it lasts. Beach games are a great way to pass the time when spending the day at the beach.

Whether you are playing a game for one or two, or for a whole team, there is something here for everyone, even the big children at heart.

The whole family is encouraged to get involved and create fun beach games.

Combine this with building sand castles and collecting shells, not to mention, playing in the water and you’re sure to have a memorable day with the children wanting to come back for more.

NAUGHTS AND CROSSES

Draw a grid in the sand; make it three squares by three squares.

Person A uses Naught to mark their spot Person B uses Crosses to mark their spot Each player takes it in turns until someone gets three in a row. It does not matter if it’s from side to side or up or down. You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every game you win, or simply make it the best of three.

SAND MEMORY GAME

You need two people to play this game.

Person A creates a grid in the sand, it’s up to you how big you make it, and we recommend perhaps four squares by four squares.

Then person A, using shells has to create a random pattern by putting the shells in several squares.

Person A should allow person B a minute to look at the grid pattern and then cover it with a beach towel.

Person B then has to draw their own grid and see if they can remember the layout of person A’s grid.

You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every time you get it right, or simply make it the best of three.

WATER BALLOON GAME

Regardless of how many kids there are fill up a water balloon with water and play pass the balloon, picking people randomly to pass it to, however don’t pass throw it high and call out their name, then it’s up to them to catch it. When and if it’s dropped, just fill up another balloon and start again.

BEACH BOWLING GAME

There are two different ways to play this game. You can either make 10 pins by filling up a cup with wet sand and then turn it upside down to make a pin (just like you would make a sand castle).

Or if you prefer you can dig a hole for the pins, allowing the ball to roll into the holes.

Either way you put one in the first row, two in the second row and so on until you have ten pins.

Draw a line in the sand and get each person to have two turns at rolling a ball toward the pins, re-creating the pins each time.

The person who knocks over the most pins, wins, or alternatively the person gets the ball in the highest scoring hole wins (with each hole being worth a different amount).

BEACH OLYMPICS

Depending on the number of kids you have with you at the beach, you could break them up into teams. Then create a list of events, with teams scoring points for each win.

The winning team should have a prize.

Some events you could have included: Three legged race – tie two kids together by the ankles, encouraging them to coordinate their movements to run.

Whichever team makes it to the end first wins.

Long Jump – Draw a line in the sand. Have each kid run up to the line and jump. Whoever jumps the longest distance wins.

Hurdles – Lay a number of items in the sand, twigs, spades, whatever you have handy. Get each child to hop the course, hoping over the items. The kid to do it in the fastest time wins.

Sleep deprived pupils are too tired to learn New research has confirmed what we have long suspected - that lack of sleep among primary school children is having a devastating effect, with nine out of 10 teachers complaining that pupils are too tired to learn.

The poll, conducted as part of The Sleep Council’s “Better Brains With More Sleep” awareness project, which aims to teach children about the importance of a good night’s sleep, also reveals that more than half - 55% - of teachers agreed that the brightest children in the classroom are the best slept and most wide awake.

And while many parents with young children worry about the effect that computers, gaming and mobile phones are having on their offspring, 88% of the 250 teachers questioned felt that distractions in the bedroom, such as games machines and TVs, are at the root of the problems, along with the fact parents are not strict enough about enforcing bedtimes.

Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council says: “As part of our project we wanted to establish just how much of an issue lack of sleep has become among young school children.

Even we have been taken aback by the sheer scale of the problem.”

The issue has now become so widespread that nearly a quarter of teachers admitted they’ve had had to resort to letting very tired children nap in a corner of the classroom.

Hello, my name is Gerry

Hi my name is Gerry the guinea Pig, I am a crested guinea pig, this is a short-haired guinea pig which has a crest on its forehead. The crest can either be white or the same colour as my body if I am a self coloured guinea pig.

I love being cuddled by my owner but it did take me a little while to settle in to my new home. My owner gives me a cuddle every day when she comes home from school and she chats to me too.

I share my home with my friends Norman and Louise.

We like to be with other guinea pigs and so we enjoy each other’s company.

We are unable to make our own Vitamin C so our owners have to make sure that we get this in our food. We stay healthy by eating food that is specifically designed for guinea pigs. We also enjoy a variety of fresh vegetables such as carrots, broccoli and cabbage as well as lettuce or apple too. It is important that we get fresh water every day and that we also have grass, hay and clean bedding to keep us well. We make very loving pets and I am sure you will make a great owner for one us.

Honey aged 5 has achieved her 10 metre swimming award, well done Honey, a great achievement.

Ashleigh Beard aged 6 has passed her level 3 in swimming at the Centurion Fitness Centre, great work Ashleigh, well done.

Joe Hudd was in the Lake District over the Bank Holiday weekend, competing in the British Orienteering Championships. Joe won his age class (M10) by over 4 minutes and the following day he took part in the relays and they romped home to take another gold medal! Well done Joe.

Jamie aged 7 has been presented with his certificate for being very brave whilst having a operation, well done Jamie.

Ruby aged 5 has achieved her 5 metre swimming award, well done Ruby, keep up the great work.

Christian Ware aged 8 has achieved gold in the Bike It challenge, Christian had to complete over 30 rides on his bike and he can now also change a punctured wheel!

Great work Christian, well done.

Grace Henderson aged 4 has been awarded with a mini kids ski connections award, fantastic achievement Grace, well done.

Lillie Jones aged 7 has passed her level 4 water skills badge, great work Lillie, well done.

Lori Robertson aged 11 was awarded a medal in netball for excellent skills and group participation in all matches, well done Lori.

Luke Bishop aged 11 achieved his medal for taking part in a Karate competition, well done Luke.

Shannaya Gray aged 10 walked 11 miles to raise money for Help for Heroes and raised over ÂŁ2000 along with her family. A superb achievement Shannaya, well done.

Huw Williams aged 10 took part in a Tae Kwon Do tournament, well done Huw.

Lucy Durston aged 7 has achieved all of her rosettes whilst riding her horse at Alstone Court, well done Lucy, great riding.

Beth Dallimore aged 5 has achieved her level 7 in gymnastics, great work Beth, well done.

Ellie Board aged 11 has achieved a award in ballet as well as her levels 3,4 and 5 in gymnastics. Well done Ellie.

Ethan Turnball aged 7 has achieved his orange belt in Tae Kwon Do and also a trophy for football in the under 7’s match.

Georgia Chinnock aged 6 took part in the Race for Life and has also achieved an award for dance too.
