The importance of a good breakfast If you’re a parent you’ll know how difficult it can be to get children to eat breakfast in the morning. Whether it’s because there’s no time or the children simply aren’t hungry, the fact is 1 in 6 children unfortunately miss breakfast everyday.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it provides you with the engery, vitamins and minerals to fuel your day.

District Olympic Beaveree 108 Beavers from the district had fabulous fun on Saturday 30th June as they all met at Chelwood campsite, owned

by Keynsham Scouts, for an Olympic themed day. Beavers from Keynsham K2, Keynsham Rocky, Paulton, High Littleton, Clutton, Radstock and Midsomer Norton all joined together for a day full of fun activities including arts & crafts, cooking, singing and games. Luckily the rain held off long enough so the Beavers could sit out in the open air and enjoy the bonfire which was lit by the Olympic torch. Mr.Elkington who has been involved in the scouting movement since the age of 8 and was one of the torch carriers and the boys were thrilled he had brought the torch along to the Beaveree and watched in delight as the torch was used to light the bonfire. The children sat and listened to stories and joined in a good old fashioned sing along led by one of the group leaders, Alan Rosewell, with some of the more enthusiastic parents also joining in. A fantastic day had been had by all!

Learning the three R’s Children at Chew Stoke C of E School have been learning their three Rs, but with a difference! Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! During ‘Environment Week’, the classes have been busy turning ‘rubbish’ into elegant clothes, accessories and artistic model animals. The Children enjoyed talks from B&NES and from Bristol Water about how to look after their environment.

Putting on their wellies and braving the rain, the children swapped their classrooms for Chew Valley Lake and the Chew Stoke Stream, to find out about the insects and fish that live nearby. Certainly a week with a difference!

In the first year of primary school the Foundation Stage continues and so your child should encounter the same sort of learning and activities they were used to in their early years setting. Helpful Homework Hints for Parents

The relationship between the home and the school is important. If you want your child to achieve academic success, you must become involved in the educational process. Here are some ways to develop a good attitude toward homework in your child and a high-quality relationship with your child’s school: • Talk to your child about school. Does your child understand why he goes to school? Discuss how school is one way that children discover who they are and who they may become. Talk to your child about what he likes and dislikes about school and why. Let him know that he can always come to you with problems.

• Communicate with your child’s teacher. Plan to meet with the teacher at least three times a year to discuss your child’s progress. Once a relationship is established, it is easier to examine difficult issues, if they arise.

• Learn about the curriculum at your child’s school. The more you know about what will be taught in the classroom, the better you will be able to help your child with homework.

• Find out what the school or district homework policy is.

It will take the guesswork out of determining whether or not your child has homework.

Set aside a regular time to study.

Find a quiet place or a ‘Homework Corner’.

Keep homework supplies in one place.

Go over the directions on the assignment before your child starts their homework.

Encourage and praise a job well done.

When the child is doing their homework, use this time to model the behaviour by using the time to read, write letters, pay bills, etc.

When your child finishes the assignment, ask them to explain it to you.

Share concerns about the amount of homework or complexity of assignments with your child’s teacher.

Encourage your child to relax for a while when an assignment is completed.

The new school year is always an exciting time and sometimes a scary time, too! You can make a real difference to how your children feel about it and how quickly they settle in. Children of all ages retain more information if it is taught in a fun and exciting way. We have created the following ideas to help you to work with your children at home to develop their skills and generate an excitement around their school work.

Encourage your child to use money as soon as possible. Allow them to hand over the cash for payment in the shop and also to collect the change. Once they have been given the change, ask them which coins they have been given and how many of each etc.

Recognition and learning through tracing - get your child used to the shapes of letters by finger tracing or by colouring some outline letters in.

To encourage story writing find a family photograph or a picture from the internet and ask your child to write a story around what they can see. It may be about a family visiting the zoo and the things they see there or even a trip to the moon. The possibilities are endless.

Time tables

To help your child to get used to controlling their pencil, draw a series of squiggly lines on paper and ask them to draw over them. It can be fun to draw some very basic animal figures and even faces and around hands and feet.

Here are some rhymes to help with some times tables reminders: 56 = 7X8....remember 5 6 7 8 It’s great to be really sure 8x3 is 24!

Make a special box in which to keep your best pieces of work this school year. If you have a class mascot why not take inspiration from them to make your box unique and special to this school year.

Boot Tidy Here is an original way to keep your pens and pencils organised - and it makes a great keepsake gift too!

You will need: An old (clean!) pair of welly boots Alphabet buttons or beads, or other decorations White (PVA) glue

You will need: A plain box file PVA (white) glue Pictures (can be drawings, colourings, cut-outs from comics or photographs) Instructions: Chose some pictures to decorate the lid of the box file. These could be photographs of your child in school uniform, or magazine cut-outs of favourite characters, or anything else that takes your fancy.

If you have any brothers or sisters, it may be an idea to add your name to the side of the box in the same way.

This will make it easier to find on the shelf.

Instructions: Make sure your boots are sparkling clean and then set about decorating them! Our example were heavily patterned already so we just used alphabet beads to spell out “pencils” down one side, but if you start with plain boots you can really go to town, using glitter, sequins, or acrylic paint!

Using the width of the sticks as your guide cut a triangle from light brown or pink foam and a rectangle from another colour.

Use double sided tape to attach the triangle to one end of the sticks and rectangle to the other. Turn over and you will see a pencil shape.

Cut a tiny triangle of black and stick to the top of the triangle as the nib.

Tape a loop of ribbon to the back.

Add a message with sticky letters.

Variation – use only 3 sticks and leave off the loop to make a bookmark.

We all love to display our child’s best school work and art work, but sometimes the fridge will only hold so much! A ‘washing line’ is an original way to display work and can be used flat against a wall or across a room.

Get the children to help you make some personalized clothes pegs, keep changing the display and let your children be really proud of their achievements.

Top tip: Fastening your pegs around the edge of a paper plate and balancing the plate on top of a cup will mean that both sides of the pegs can be decorated at the same time and the peg won’t accidentally be stuck closed!

Hello, my name is Bertie

I live at home with my family and love playing with them.

I know that I can be stubborn at times and don’t really like being trained but I do love having fun chasing balls and sticks.

I sleep in the house but some of my dog friends sleep in kennels in their gardens but we all love our families and are very grateful for all of the love and attention they give us.

We all know that having a dog as a pet is hard work and can sometimes be expensive too but we do offer loads of love in return.

My owner is very careful with flea and tick protection for me as I love to walk in long grass and run in the woods and this can sometimes cause ticks to stick to my fur. I go to the vets regularly for my health check ups.

It is best to feed us dogs a grain-free diet. While the better quality dog food may cost more, we can eat less of it since our bodies use more of what we are eating, producing less waste. Not to mention the vet bill if we develop issues from consuming a low quality food.

I eat twice a day and have a meat based diet at all times, I eat at the same times every day and this helps my owner to know when I need to go for a walk too but I also love a treat every now and then when I have been well behaved.

I am going to curl up in by dog basket now and have a little snooze.
