EASTER FUN! The children at Samuel Whites Infant School in Hanham held two fundraising events over the Easter period. The teaching team asked children to collect silver coins and then bring them in and stick them to their eggs to decorate them.

They managed to fill their eggs and raised £230.00!

They also had a Bunny Hop sponsored event where children jumped and hopped around an obstacle course. The Bunny Hop was organised originally to be outside and parents were invited to come along with a blanket and picnic. However, the weather was unkind and it rained! They decided to go ahead with the event which was a huge success indoors and they are still collecting the sponsor money!

ST KEYNA ‘SHAKEATHON’ THEATRE WORKSHOP Year 5 children at St Keyna Primary School have been fortunate enough to be selected to take part in a very special ‘Shakeathon’ programme, organised by The Egg theatre in Bath. Along with children from Batheaston Primary, the class enjoyed several workshops led by Egg staff culminating in a performance of Macbeth at the theatre on 17th and 18th March.

Teacher Breda Leese said, “It has been a hugely exciting and rewarding experience for all the children. Learning words that were written over 400 years ago is an enormous undertaking, but they approached the challenge with such energy and enthusiasm. It has been great to see them grow in confidence and encourage each other. We’d like to thank the Egg staff for all their support and also to parents for their help in organising costumes and learning lines.”

Here’s how the children have summed up their experience: Aryna: “When I first heard about Shakeathon I felt excited, but also a bit nervous because I had never performed in a real theatre before.”

Brandon: “On the night it went fine, and my mum and dad thought it was amazing.”

Adonii: “It was like a dream come true, to perform on stage and make people clap.”

Daniel: “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Following the final performance, Head Teacher Adrienne Hughes paid tribute to all the performers and staff, “The children have worked incredibly well together supporting each other to learn lines and perform confidently. I’m sure I wasn’t alone in finishing the evening with a little tear in my eye to see how they have developed over the months that they have been rehearsing. What a fantastic experience! I’m sure this great opportunity will be something the children will remember for a long, long time.”

The shortlisted artists are sculptor Sebastien Boyesen, metalworker Jon Mills and clock designers/ manufacturers, Smith of Derby. All were shortlisted due to their inspirational ideas, their response to the site and a commitment to working with the local community.

Keynsham Town Councillor Lisa O’Brien, Chair of the Keynsham Arts Advisory Group, said: “We are delighted to announce the three artists who have been shortlisted for the Keynsham clock tower commission.

Each artist’s proposal will be exhibited at various venues in Keynsham from the end of April into early May. We will be asking for feedback from residents, business owners and frequent visitors to our town and do everything possible to ensure that the voting process is fair and impartial.”

COUNTDOWN TO KEYNSHAM’S CLOCK The people of Keynsham will shortly be able to choose the design of a new clock tower which will have pride of place in the new town centre development.

The successful artist will go on to work with the community to finalise details of the design.

The exhibition can be seen at the Key Centre at Keynsham Methodist Church, Charlton Road, from 9 May to 15 May (open 10am to 5pm with a late night on Friday 9 May until 8pm - please note the Key Centre is not open on Sunday).

Three artists have been shortlisted to design the clock tower and their proposals will be on display at exhibitions across the town from April 25.

Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib Dem, Southdown), Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “Following the public vote by the people of Keynsham, the clock tower will be in situ by April 2015. The Council is very pleased to support this important addition to the civic centre area, which will form a focus for the town. I’m looking forward to seeing the exhibition of short-listed designs.”

SINGING GRANT TO HELP PUPILS’ LITERACY SKILLS Councillor Dine Romero (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children & Youth, said: “I am delighted that Bath & North East Somerset Council has secured this grant which will help hundreds of children improve their literacy skills in a fun and innovative manner.”

The project will work with up to 500 children, each of whom will be encouraged to complete an arts award programme devised specifically for primary schools. The singing sessions will culminate in a mass performance in July 2015 which will also feature the premiere of five new songs by Lin Marsh, a highly sought-after composer who specialises in writing vocal works for young people.

Bath & North East Somerset Council has been awarded a share of £30,000 to improve children’s literacy skills through an innovative singing project.

Teams of singing specialists will put on workshops at primary schools aimed at helping pupils who struggle with their English skills. The sessions build confidence and competency.

Rainer Dolz, Manager of Music Service for Bath & North East Somerset Council, said, “This is a great opportunity to work with schools which we know have high numbers of children for whom English is an additional language or where they struggle with their literacy. We look forward to developing their English skills through singing.”

The £30,000 grant from the Youth Music Foundation is shared with South Gloucestershire Council.

By Avon Fire & Rescue Service Working smoke alarms are one of the best ways of keeping your little ones safe if a fire breaks out in the home.

And although more households than ever own smoke alarms, most of us aren’t brilliant at checking they are working. That’s why Avon Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging parents in particular to take a couple of seconds to test their alarms.

James Bladon from Avon Fire & Rescue Service said: “We know that smoke alarms can be frustrating

if they go off when you burn the toast and it may be tempting to remove the batteries.

“If that’s a familiar story please make today the day you replace them or fit a new alarm. A little inconvenience is a price worth paying if it means your family escapes from a fire. The risk of dying in a house fire increases by four times if smoke alarms aren’t working, so a 10 second chore is a tiny price to pay.

“If you would like more advice we will be happy to come to your home to provide information and fit free smoke alarms.”

(allergic rhinitis)

Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, is condition in which people experience an allergic reaction to different types of pollen during the year.

Hayfever is common in the UK, affecting around 1 in 5 people at some stage.

Tree pollen often triggers symptoms during the spring, grass pollen is in the air in late spring and summer and pollen from weeds is around from early spring into late autumn.

Hayfever can also be caused by mould spores, from late March until November, usually peaking in late summer and early autumn.

It is common for people to be allergic to more than one pollen.

A person who has perennial rather than seasonal rhinitis experiences

allergy triggers all year round, from allergens such as house dust mites, mould, animal dander and feathers.

What are the symptoms of allergic rhinitis?

The body’s immune system interprets the allergen, such as pollen, mould or dander, as an invader and responds by releasing a chemical called histamine into the bloodstream.

Histamine causes inflammation (swelling and redness) of the sinuses, nose and mucus membranes of the eyes, and triggers sneezing. The swelling reaction is designed to block the allergen from entering the body and sneezing is a method to expel it out of the body. Histamine also allows extra fluids to enter the nasal tissue, resulting in congestion, itching and a runny nose.

People with allergic rhinitis have sudden sneezing, a watery nasal discharge, puffy eyes and fatigue.

Hayfever symptoms often start during childhood or teens, but can develop at any age.

How do I find out what causes my allergies?

The season in which your allergy occurs will narrow the list of possible culprits. To pinpoint the cause, your doctor may arrange for you to have a skin test to determine which substances or allergens cause a reaction.

The skin test involves placing extracts of potential allergens in a grid on

your arm or back, and then pricking your skin so the extract can enter the outer layer of skin or epidermis.

Those areas that become red and itchy indicate which substances trigger a defensive (allergic) response by your immune system.

Your doctor may recommend a blood test to check the levels of antibodies produced by the immune system.

Elevated levels of certain antibodies can identify particular allergies.

Why do only some people get seasonal allergies/hayfever?

It is not known why some people get allergies while others do not.

However, there is some evidence to suggest that hayfever and other types of allergies are hereditary (passed on from parents to children). People who suffer from asthma oreczema are also more likely to develop hayfever or perennial (year-round) allergic rhinitis.

Why are my allergies better on some days and worse on others?

While the pollen seasons for particular plants are very consistent within each geographical region, the weather plays a large role in determining how heavy the pollen count (and other potential allergens including mould) will be, both seasonally and daily. The severity of your allergic reaction will generally mirror the rise and fall of the specific allergen count to which you are allergic.

Detecting learning disabilities A child or person with a learning disability has a reduced intellectual ability which may cause problems with everyday activities. They may need support to help develop new skills, to understand complex information as well as interacting with other people.

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have some type of learning disability.

Learning disability is often confused with learning difficulty or mental healthproblems. The charity Mencap says dyslexia, for example, is a learning difficulty. Unlike a learning disability, dyslexia does not affect a person’s intellect. Mental health problems may be overcome with appropriate treatment, but that is not the case with a learning disability.

People with conditions like Down’s syndrome and forms of autism can also have learning disabilities. Nearly

a third of people with epilepsy have some form of learning disability.

Most people with a learning disability can lead independent lives, given the appropriate support.

A learning disability may be classed as mild, moderate or severe.

Mencap says a person with a mild learning disability may need support for something specific like applying for a job. However, full time care may be needed for people with a severe or profound learning disability.

Causes of learning disabilities Brain development is affected in a person with a learning disability, usually before they are born, during birth or in early childhood. Causes may not be known in all cases, but include: • Mother’s illness during pregnancy • Birth problems restricting oxygen supply to the baby’s brain • Genetic abnormalities or inherited learning disability • Early childhood illness, including meningitis Diagnosing learning disabilities Some tests may be done during

pregnancy if there are concerns about a baby’s development, including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS).

A diagnosis could also be made after a baby is born, for example if there are concerns about the risk of a learning disability from a problem during birth.

Specialist assessments may be carried out if a baby has developmental delays and is later than most other children reaching certain milestones.

Getting a diagnosis of learning disability can be distressing, and parents may need professional and emotional support to help cope and plan ahead for the baby’s specific needs.

Treating learning disability As a child with a learning disability grows up, support will be needed from a range of health professionals. Every child’s needs will be different. Living as full and independent a life as possible is the goal of this support from the family GP, specialist paediatricians, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, educational and clinical psychologists.

In this acting game players imitate the motions, habits, and expressions of a famous person, such as an athlete, politician, musician, or actor. The clincher: No talking allowed! Players can ask Yes or No questions (which are met by a nod or a shake). The correct guesser does the next impression.

Start with A to Z anyplace in the world: Kansas, say. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of Kansas, such as South Africa. Whoever goes next needs a place that starts with A. It has to be a real place - and no using a map!

This all-ages game is easily adaptable to your kids’ attention spans and the amount of time you have to play. All you do is agree on a basic colour such as red, blue, green, or yellow - and challenge your kids to name 100 items that are this colour.

Younger kids can play a shortened version - counting items to 10 or even 25; older kids will be challenged if you set a time limit and make them race against one another. You can also give each player a different colour to search for.

5 REASONS WHY A BIRD MIGHT (OR MIGHT NOT) BE A GOOD CHOICE FOR A PET 1 Birds are easier to care for than other pets. Unlike the family dog or

cat that has the run of the house, a bird can be popped into its cage while you’re away during the day or busy around the house. Cleaning a cage each day is more appealing to many people than scooping litter.

But keep in mind…Many birds are extremely vocal and noisy, so even if yours is hanging out in his cage on the other side of the house, chances are he’ll be hard to ignore.

2 Birds are easy to train. Birds love to learn and love attention from their humans, so training them is often a breeze and just plain fun. And let’s face it – a bird is a whole lot easier to manage for training purposes than a large dog.

But keep in mind…Depending on the bird, she is apt to learn things you didn’t plan for her to. Certain types of birds, parrots for example, pick up words, phrases and sounds they hear around the house.

3 Birds are very social. Many birds have the capacity to bond just as closely with their humans as dogs and cats. And in fact, birds are much more socially inclined than kitties.

But keep in mind…Again, this can be a double-edged sword if you’re not prepared to spend significant time interacting with, training and socializing your bird. Many exotics do best treated as members of the family in the fullest sense – allowed outside their cages for several hours each day, and included in most at-home family activities 4 Birds are inexpensive to feed. The smaller the pet, the less the pet eats. Certainly keeping your bird fed is less costly than feeding a dog or most cats. Generally speaking, it’s best to feed a high-quality diet of species-specific commercial pelleted food (not seed mix), fruits, veggies, and sprouted grains.

But keep in mind…Overall, you shouldn’t think cheap-to-keep when it comes to a bird as a pet.

Owners of large exotic birds spend around £50 a month for food, toys and other supplies.

5 Birds are attractive and interesting to have around. Many birds have feather coats that

are incredibly beautiful and vibrantly coloured – it is a joy every time you look at them.

Bird behavior is also fun and interesting to observe, and can even lower your stress level.

But keep in mind…Birds should never be considered as pretty cage ornaments or part of a home’s decor. Pet birds are not the feathered equivalent of brightly coloured aquarium fish.They are every bit as high maintenance as other more common types of pets, and indeed require a great deal more time and attention than many other companion animals.
