Big Cut In School Energy Consumption
Congratulations to you all.
A dozen primary schools across the Bath and North East Somerset area have saved more than 4000 kilowatt hours in a two week Energy Power Down campaign to cut the amount of electricity they use – equivalent to over 2 tonnes of carbon Pupils used electricity monitoring equipment to record their energy consumption over a two week period. Over the next two weeks the Energy Power Down campaign encouraged a range of actions to reduce energy consumption. On average, the participant schools reduced consumption by 16% during the two weeks of the campaign. Councillor Charles Gerrish (Conservative, Keynsham North), Cabinet Member for Customer Services, commented: “If Bath and North East Somerset Council is to stand any chance of achieving our carbon reduction aim our schools must be given all the advice they need to save energy. The Council’s Eco-Schools initiative is crucial to us tackling the causes and effects of climate change.’

Following this success, the Energy Power Down will take place in at least twelve more schools later this year. The schools used innovative campaign methods to get messages across, like composing rap songs and drawing comic strips, with posters, leaflets for parents, and talks. These all encouraged the switching off of lights, electronic whiteboards, and computers when not in use, checking thermostat controlled heaters were off at weekends, and not using lights during PE and assemblies when possible. Teachers were very positive about the ‘Power Down’ campaign. Jane Geernaert, Year 4 class teacher at St. Nicholas Primary School said: “We made the whole school aware of saving energy and environmental issues – the project got the whole school going.” Some of the comments in pupil feedback forms said how proud they were to take part in the initiative and they wanted more schools to take a proactive approach to reducing energy reduction.
Celebrate Our Town The second annual awards for Midsomer Norton were held recently, a chance to celebrate our town and the people within it. In the children’s category a pupil from Longvernal Primary School won 1st prize with a project on the history of Midsomer Norton. Other awards were given to pupils from St Johns Primary School and Trinity Primary School too. Well done to all who took part in the awards.

Black Belt Success It was another triumphant day in May when 5 students from Jamie Woodlands Black belt academy achieved their 1st and 2nd degree black belts. The group who have all been training for at least 4 years were put through their paces over a two week period beginning with a gruelling fitness test designed to test their will and determination as well as their overall stamina and endurance. Following successfully passing the fitness test the students made their second trip to the midlands where they were judged by former
World and European champion Mark Junday. On the day the five hopefuls demonstrated proficiency in various aspects of martial arts including sparring, self defence, weapons and knowledge of a wide range of strikes, blocks, joint locks, throws and holds. Instructor Jamie Woodland said of the new black belts “It was a tough couple of weeks for the five students both physically and mentally but this level of martial arts is what they began preparing for as soon as they came through the doors of the academy as beginners. It’s been a long journey and they have all shown good focus, perseverance and self belief to achieve one of the highest standards in martial arts and are a credit to the academy.” Pictured are from l-r, Master Mark Junday, George Bowen 2nd dan, Craig Masterton 2nd dan, Bradley Christer 1st Dan, Ben Fuller 1st Dan, Michelle Sargent 1st Dan, Jamie Woodland.
MIDSOMER NORTON SOCIETY AWARDS Somerset Schools Folk Dance Festival We have been practising for three months at our Dance Club for the Folk Festival held on the Cathedral Green in Wells. When we arrived in Wells we gathered together with our School banner and marched up the High Street with the Mayor of Bath and with 70 other schools. We danced twelve dances throughout the afternoon and the weather was sunny the whole way through. We had great fun doing the dances especially the last one as all the parents and teachers came to dance with us even the Chairman of BaNES Council! In the spring term, Year 4 pupils of St John’s school, Midsomer Norton were studying Our Local Area. Fortunately, at the same time, The Midsomer Norton Society were running a competition. This was to produce a project about the history of Midsomer Norton. Because we
were proud of the work we had produced, some of us decided to enter the competition. The entries varied from focusing in on just one category whilst others looked at things which fitted into lots of different categories. All the entries were displayed in the town hall on Saturday 20th June and many visitors arrived to view the work. In the evening there was a special awards ceremony and Mr Bamford and Mrs Miller (our teachers) were presented with lots of medals for our school. We are very proud to be able to report that 7 pupils got gold medals, 2 pupils got silver medals and 4 got merits. These will be given out in our whole school assembly before the end of term by Mr Myers from the Midsomer Norton Society. We really enjoyed carrying out the projects and found out such a lot about our local area. By Cerys Stephens
Goodbye & Good Luck! Mrs Haines and Mrs Randell and all of the staff and pupils at Welton Primary School would like to say a goodbye and very good luck to all of their year 6 pupils who will be leaving at the end of term. You will all be missed!

Elite Stationers has opened in Chesterfield House in Midsomer Norton High Street and offers a large range of craft, stationary, art, photocopying and laminating services. The shop in Frome is already very successful and they are keen to offer similar craft courses and help for our budding young artists in Midsomer Norton and Radstock. Sam Garland, the manageress of the new shop showed me around and we talked at length about the craft courses she is introducing for children aged from 6 to 12. Sam is very keen to encourage creativity and will be running craft sessions

in the Frome shop on 28th July, 18th August, 25th August and 1st September each session will run for 1.5 hours and they start at 10.30am or 1.30pm each day. Children will learn the skills of decoupage, how to use pens to decorate boxes and peel off’s and also wax resist drawings using wax crayons and water colours. Each session may require some parental assistance and Sam is very keen for the parents to stay with the children during each session to help them along. I guess we are all thinking about the stationary requirements of all of our children for September and the big return to school! Elite
Stationers have a wide range of stock from Stabilo and Helix and they also stock the ‘S move easy ergo’ pens, pencils, refills and erasers, perfect for both right and left handed children at only ÂŁ5.95. For our younger artists the ‘children’s corner’ comes alive with colourful poster paints, glitter glue, pens, crafts materials and everything to inspire and innovate the next Banksy! Call into the shop for a look around and if what you are looking for isn’t there, simply ask and they will get it in for you!

To Mak e And Do
If you would like to give someone special a present, why not make a beautiful bunch of lilies for them?
What you will need: • Coloured paper (it can be different colours or all the same) • A pencil • A pair of scissors (make sure you ask an adult to help you) • Pipe cleaners/drinking straws • Glue or sticky tape Start by drawing round your hand on the coloured paper. If you want to make five lilies, draw round your hand five times. Ask an adult to help you cut around each shape. Then, wrap the hand shapes around a pencil so the palm of the hand and fingers go curly.
Make a cone shape out of the palm of the hand shapes and glue or tape the two edges together. Now it’s starting to look like a flower! Next, glue the flower heads to the pipe cleaners/drinking straws. If you would like to make a bouquet of flowers, you can also cut out some leaf shapes from green-coloured paper and staple these to the bottom of the flowers you have made.

Football bowling
What you will need: • 10 empty 2 litre fizzy pop bottles • A football • Some chalk for scoring 1. Stand the bottles up in a triangular shape and take 10 big steps away from them. 2. Each player has two goes at trying to knock down the bottles with a football. You can either kick the football or push it with your hands. If you knock all the bottles down with one go, you get another bonus go. 3. Add up how many bottles were knocked over altogether and that is the score, which you can write on the pavement in chalk. 4. Do this 5 times, making sure you add up everyone’s score after each go and find out who the football bowling champion is!
3
Balloon stomp
What you will need: • Balloons • String 1. Blow up the balloons and, using the string, tie them to your ankles. 2. The aim of the game is to stomp on everyone else’s balloon. The last person to have their balloon stomped on wins the game!
4
Splat the rat
What you will need: • Old sock • Dried peas or rice • A piece of drain pipe • Roll of newspaper or small piece of garden hose pipe Make a rat by filling a sock with dried peas or rice. Tie off the open end of the sock with string. Leave a length of string to act as the tail. Cut off any excess sock material. Decorate the sock to make it look like a rat by colouring the eyes, drawing a mouth and ears. Sew on wool to make whiskers. Make a ‘Splatter’ by rolling up a news paper and fastening with sticky tape or cutting a small piece (30 cm) of garden hose pipe. Find a piece of drain pipe approximately 2 metres long. How to Play: This game requires 2 people. The object of the game is to try and splat the rat just as it comes out of the bottom of the pipe. The ‘Splatter’ should stand poised ready to strike the rat. The other person is to release the rat from the top of the pipe. It takes great judgment and skill to catch the rat! You can speed up the rat by increasing the angle of the pipe, but you need be sure the rat can escape freely at the bottom. Hints: This is a great game to make for fund raising events, where you can charge to “Have a goâ€? and offer a small prize to those who splat the rat. You can also make a smaller ‘Splat the mouse’ version using a couple of kitchen roll tubes.

Wonderful welly plants - start your own garden with an old Wellington boot!
What you will need: • An old Wellington boot • Some small pebbles/gravel • A few handfuls of soil • A pansy/marigold plant Start by asking an adult to cut off about half of the leg of the boot. Then put the pebbles/gravel at the bottom of the boot and two thirds of the soil on top. Next, place your plant in the boot, carefully pushing it into the soil and then pour the rest of the soil around the plant and pat it down. Give the plant some water and put it in a nice sunny spot in the garden, or on a window sill. Make sure you check your plant every day to see if the soil is dry. If it is, give your plant a good drink of water.

Local IT Firm Support School Paulton Junior School have always had a network of around 40 computers across the school and have previously struggled to keep up with the ever changing needs of the software and hardware of their systems, until now.
Mr Grosvenor, head of the school decided in April of this year that the time had come to research the options available to them as the needs of the school were heading towards the requirements for a full turn key solution. Eye Tech IT now offer Paulton
Junior School the service they were looking for, carrying out full maintenance to all existing computers and networks, all repairs, servicing and trouble shooting with the minimum amount of fuss, disruption and of course very quickly. Mr Grosvenor said ‘working with Eye Tech IT has enabled our teachers to teach and not spend valuable time trying to get the systems to work. Eye Tech IT offer us a professional dedicated team who are only ever one phone call away, they react very quickly and by working with them we have been able to introduce a system that enables us to become proactive and not reactive.’ Eye Tech IT has experience in working within the education environment and understands how important it is that all of the systems and software is working
as it should be. Paulton Junior School are now
working to introduce touch typing to their pupils to enhance their IT skills and speed their typing ability, this will all lead into Mr Grosvenor’s future plans to ensure that every pupil has their own laptop within the next few years. Mr Grosvenor is happy to demonstrate the IT systems at Paulton Junior School to any other schools that may be interested in investigating a turn key solution to their IT needs too.

MIDSOMER NORTON KUMON STUDY CENTRE Kumon is one of the leading after-school education providers in the UK and Ireland, offering both Maths and English programmes for children aged three to nineteen, of all abilities. It exists to provide as many children as possible with the opportunity to learn and aims to give them the best chance in life by offering a unique and individualised study programme tailored to the needs of each child. Kumon aims to provide children with long-term foundations in reading, writing and arithmetic. It also instils confidence in children and makes them believe they can do anything they set their minds to.
Janet Russell (former Deputy Headteacher at Midsomer Norton Primary School) runs the Midsomer Norton Study Centre with a team of five highly trained assistants and is currently based at her former school. Classes run on Monday and Wednesday from 3.30 – 5.30 pm, with the students dropping in for about 45 minutes study time. However, owing to the fast growth of students, Janet plans
to move the centre to a new venue at the beginning of August. The new centre will open on Monday 10th August at The Somer Centre, Gullocks Tyning, Midsomer Norton, which is adjacent to Wansdyke Leisure Centre. Classes will be run on Monday and Thursday, between 3.30 – 6.30 pm with times varying slightly, but giving greater flexibility. Janet says: “All students are making excellent progress and several have recently been awarded with their Bronze ASR Awards. ASR (Advanced Student Roll) recognises and celebrates students’ achievement of mastering Maths and/ or English beyond their current school level. It also gives recognition for all their hard work and dedication to the Kumon programme. On Saturday 4th July, an ASR Awards Ceremony was held at the new venue which was attended by many of our students. This is a great opportunity to motivate others, as well as demonstrating the benefits of the Kumon Way. We are proud of all our students and thrilled to see how quickly they gain confidence, concentration, pace and skills as they develop their self-learning study habits.” A student’s Kumon journey is divided into three areas: • Easy Starting Point – this is where the student starts the programme, at a level where they feel comfortable and can achieve immediate success. We can then
local families for local children We are recruiting foster carers in the Bath & North East Somerset area who are willing to care for teenagers – you are likely to receive in excess of £380 per week, alongside excellent support and training. If you have a commitment to helping children and young people, you could have something to offer as a foster carer. In return, fostering provides a range of benefits including all the rewards that come from making a difference to a child or young person’s future. be sure that they are building on a strong foundation. • Transition from familiar into unfamiliar work – this is a crucial time for the student as they meet increasingly challenging work and learn how to selflearn. Making use of examples on their worksheets and self-correcting are vital to good progress. • Self-learning – students finally move into the self-learning zone where they have never been taught the material. They have the opportunity to crack things for themselves.
Janet is running a Free Trial again, later in the year, to give children and parents an opportunity to try out the programme FREE for two weeks. The Free Trial begins on Monday 21st September and runs through to Tuesday 20th October If you want to know more about how Kumon can work for your child, contact Janet on 01761 453720 or email her at midsomernorton@kumoncentre.co.uk.

Starting Secondary School things to think about... Most children feel anxious when they start secondary school, so be assured almost everyone else will feel the same - even if they don’t show it.
It goes without saying you should ensure you have all the equipment you need and some extras as wellgreat for sharing and breaking the ice - so stock up on the pens and pencils. Try to get into a routine with homework, and make sure you have a quiet area to do your homework. Homework is very important at secondary school and it is vital your routine can be stuck to every day.
Secondary schools usually have lunchtime and afterschool clubs, where you will meet lots of other new friends. If you can persuade someone in your tutor to go along with you, it will make it less daunting. Sometimes you need a little bit of a push to try new activities, but why not give them a try, after all you can stop if you don’t enjoy them after a couple of weeks. There is nothing wrong in discovering you don’t like something- but it’s always worth a try! If you feel you would like to talk to someone about the way things are going after a few weeks, arrange to see your tutor or teacher and they will be able to help. Keep communicating with your form tutor and your parents, and try to be open about how you are feeling. Getting into routines You can help get into the swing of things at your new school by setting up a few simple routines will ease your worries about adjusting to secondary school: • Pack everything you need for school before you go to bed - books, lunch money, sports kit and any other equipment. • Make sure you have a good, balanced breakfast before you leave. It’ll give you the energy you need and you’ll be able to concentrate better in lessons. • Get to know your timetable. Make a copy so your parents can remind you about things like packing your sports kit if you need to. • Find out about your homework timetable and make sure you stick to it. • Make sure you give your parents all the letters you are sent home with from school. Some parents find it works to set up a system, such as getting children to pin school letters to the kitchen notice board or fridge door as soon as they get home so they don’t get lost.
Good Luck to you all in your new schools! From the HEY! team X

Aliens in The Attic Release date: 31/07/09
Aliens in the Attic, co-scripted by one of the writers of Madagascar and the Academy Award-winning Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbits, is an adventure/comedy about kids on a family vacation who must fight off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with world-destroying ambitions - while the youngsters’ parents remain clueless about the battle.
In the colourful, computer-animated follow-up to Ice Age 2, the cuddly critters encounter some of the most fearsome, prehistoric predators as Scrat the sabre-toothed squirrel continues his relentless pursuit of a tasty acorn and meets his match in the sexy and conniving Scratte. Sid the sloth yearns for a family of his own so he ‘appropriates’ a nest of soon-to-hatch dinosaur eggs. The sloth’s loyal friends, Manny the woolly mammoth and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger embark on a perilous rescue mission accompanied by the love of Manny’s life, Ellie, who is preparing to give birth to their first mini-mammoth. Mischievous possum ‘brothers’ Crash and Eddie also tag along for the ride, providing a distraction for Diego, who fears he might be losing his killer instinct by spending all of his time with his herbivore friends. The long and arduous quest takes the friends into a vast and mysterious underground world where the flora is almost as deadly as the fauna and a lovable, one-eyed weasel called Buck is on his own mission: to hunt the pesky dinosaurs.

Lifting Ice Cubes Can you get an ice cube out of a glass of water without getting wet? Try this experiment..
What you’ll need: Salt Glass Water String Ice Cube
What to do: 1. Fill the glass with water. 2. Place an ice cube in the glass. 3. Dangle the end of the string on the ice cube. 4. Keeping the string still, sprinkle some salt on the ice cube and leave it for a few minutes. 5. Lift the string and watch as the ice cube comes out of the glass of water.
What you’ll need:
Water Blotting paper (letter size or smaller) Baking sheet (small) or a dish with an edge 4-5 different felt tip pens
What to do: 1. Fill the baking sheet or dish with water. 2. Lay your blotting paper so that it is horizontal or landscape. 3. Draw or color a circle about half an inch to an inch at the bottom of the paper. Leave about an inch from the bottom edge of the paper not marked with your marker. Do this with each of your 4-5 colors of markers/pens. 4. Hold the top end of your paper up with one hand and place the bottom edge of the paper into the water (making sure that the colored lines do not touch the water). 5. Hold the paper there for a few minutes so that the blotting paper can absorb the water. 6. Keep an eye on the circles that you colored to see what happens as the water travels up the blotting paper and reaches your markings. How many different colors can you see? You may think that your marker is green, but when you see the break down you can actually see the different colors that make up the color green. NOTE: Blotting paper works best on this experiment. You can usually find this paper at a stationery shop.
