A GUIDE FOR RESPONSIBLE FESTIVAL GOERS IN EAST DEVON

FOREWORD East Devon's festivals are not just events; they're celebrations of community and culture. By adopting these responsible practices, you become a champion for sustainability, ensuring the festivities contribute positively to the local environment. Dance, sing, and celebrate with a conscience!

1. LEAVE NO TRACE Pack essentials in reusable bags and containers. Dispose of waste responsibly in designated recycling and compost bins. This helps to keep our festival sites (often parks and gardens) clean and accessible for those who come after and helps to reduce the cost and impact of additional clean up operations.

2. SUPPORT LOCAL Take the opportunity to indulge in the delicious local food and beverages offered at the festival — supporting businesses. Choose sustainable-conscious food options and support vendors committed to sustainability.

3. SUSTAINABLE SIPS Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Use water refill stations and avoid singleuse plastic bottles. Choose a reusable festival cup for bars and pubs and bring it with you on your return visits.

4. ECO-FRIENDLY CAMPING If camping is part of the festival experience, choose reusable and durable camping gear. Dispose of camping waste properly and consider donating or reusing items.

5. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE Embrace a 'green' wardrobe by repurposing clothing or choosing sustainable fashion brands. Participate in clothing swaps or donate items at the festival's designated collection points.

6. RESPECT THE VENUE Follow festival guidelines and respect the natural surroundings. Avoid damaging vegetation and stay on designated paths to protect the landscape and local wildlife.

7. TRAVEL WISELY Car share, use public transportation or a shuttle bus service to reduce carbon emissions. Consider eco-friendly transportation options when traveling to and from the festival. Active travel, walking or cycling to an event if you can is a great way to reduce your footprint, congestion and feel good at the same time.

8. ECO-CONSCIOUS ACCOMMODATION If you’re staying overnight, choose accommodations committed to eco-friendly practices. Support local bed and breakfasts or eco-friendly hotels.

9. BE MINDFUL OF NOISE LEVELS Enjoy the music responsibly, keeping noise levels in check. Use headphones in camping areas to allow others a peaceful night's rest.

10. VOLUNTEER & BE AN ALLY Participate in festival sustainability initiatives or volunteer for clean-up efforts. Encourage others to join in keeping the festival grounds clean and green. Some festivals even offer initiatives to do this!
