S CHAIRMAN of British Water Ski Racing it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2019 season.

currently the best international venue in Europe, Kings Lynn. We are also in a world championship year, which is being hosted in Vichy, France in early September.

As an avid racer myself, competing in all categories; F2, Seniors and Under 15’s, I am again looking forward to the season starting.

The annual dinner dance is moving this year to Milton Keynes, with committee member Simon Gale and his wife Sharon organising this great celebration of the years racing.

This year we welcome back Allhallows to the national calendar, alongside regular venues of Saltash, Weston-super- Mare, Cardiff, Hunstanton, and again,

WATER SKI RACING

what is it?

If water skiing isn’t exhilarating enough for you, then Ski Racing is the answer.

S

KI RACING is a test of endurance and daring as racers compete at speeds of up to 200km per hour in high performance boats, really stretching their skills, and their nerves, to the limit. It’s the fastest form of water skiing there is and with it being a team sport, it is the perfect way for you to share the excitement.

If you’re looking for a leisurely cruise, this isn’t the sport for you. Ski Racing is an out and out race, with many skiers keeping time or over taking each other at high speed. Times vary depending on the competition and the category, but generally are a minimum of fifteen minutes and cover anything from two miles upwards. Skiers start at the same time and race around a set course, which could be anything from smooth, calm water to waves crashing around them.

Success in Ski Racing results from a full team effort, as well as the skier, there is the driver, who tows the skier and the observer. Races take place offshore and onshore, from open sea to rivers and lakes so conditions can vary considerably, and no race is the same, letting the team really challenge themselves.

It is a sport that is suitable for all abilities.

Even in national competitions, there are novice categories, as well as a variety of other classes for different powered boats.

The length of your ski line depends on the length and power of the boat being used,

the water conditions and the speed you’d like to race on that particular day. Your team will need to be strategic thinkers, as well as daring and confident on the water to complete races in the fastest time.

Over the years, Britain has proven to be a strong contender in Ski Racing in Europe, winning countless titles in all categories, from both male and female teams and continues to play a major role in the world of Ski Racing. It is a sport that provides an incredible buzz and allows all members of the team to prove their ability on rough seas, calm water and everything in between, all while getting the adrenaline flowing and the heart pumping.

The main race is divided into Formula 1, 2 and 3 and is open to any age or sex of skier

The support race is divided into the following categories:

FORMULA 1 All hulls must be a minimum of 18 feet in length Boats can be single or twin outboards or single or twin inboard engines Maximum engine power of 9.420 cc

FORMULA 2 All hulls must be a minimum of 18 feet in length All boats must have single outboards only Maximum engine power of 300hp

FORMULA 3 All hulls must be a minimum of 18 feet in length All boats must have single engines only Maximum engine power of 150 hp / 111.85 Kw

LADIES Open to ladies of all ages

JUNIORS Up to and including the year of the 17th birthday

SENIOR MAN 35 years of age and over

OPEN CLASS Any BWS member

KIDS RACE The kids race is divided into the following categories and skiing times:

UNDER 12s Up to 11 years old on 1st January of the year of competition.

As from the start of 2016 season, will race for 15 minutes

UNDER 15s 12, 13, 14 years old on 1st January of the year of competition.

As from the start of 2016 season, will race for 15 minutes plus a lap.

HERE ARE several disciplines involved with water skiing and wake boarding – it is a sport that allows something for everyone. Water skiing is both a recreational activity and a competitive sport that is suitable for all ages and abilities.

BAREFOOT

Starting on your back, sitting up and gently place your soles on the water to learn how to barefoot.

BOAT WAKEBOARD

During competitive wakeboarding, you get the chance to show off your skills.

Riders perform a subjectively judged freeriding routine, they may perform any manoeuvres they choose in any order they wish to really play to their skills.

CABLE WAKEBOARD

This came out the waterskiing and surfing scene in California. Unlike water skiing, this is about creativity and freestyle. Tricks can be performed off the surface of the water or under it.

DISABLED SKIING

The British Water Ski and Wakeboard committee are committed to creating a competitive and inclusive sport. With expert sport and assistive equipment, you can learn to water ski, whatever your disability.

KNEEBOARD

There are two versions of this discipline.

Slalom and Tricks.

With Slalom, the competition takes place on a traditional water-skiing slalom course of six turn buoys but with the addition of another six buoys positioned three metres inside the standard turn buoys. The aim is to pass around six buoys and then successfully exiting the end gate of the course.

With Tricks, the aim is to complete as many different tricks as possible during two twenty second runs of the course.

Tricks are performed on the surface of the water and in the air, but are only counted once.

TOURNAMENT

This is the original form of competitive water skiing. Competitors take on three challenges, slalom, tricks and jumping.

Points are then combined to give an overall result.

WATER SKI RACING This encompasses speeds of up to 200km per hour and uses high performance boats. Skiers stretch their skills to the extreme to be the fastest on the water.

ATER SKI RACING is a sport that can provide an incredible buzz and is a very enjoyable scene to be a part of.

Britain’s ski racers are among the best in the world and have proven their abilities on both rough seas and calm lake waters, so what’s it all about and how do you get into Ski Racing?

There are three elements to a Ski Race team, consisting of a boat driver, an observer and a skier. The driver tows the skier, varying the speed depending on the water conditions and how they work together as a team. They rely on their knowledge of the skier and the observer’s ability to read the skier and their signals. Newer racers who have not yet progressed onto a mono ski

can race in pairs although it is easier to compete on a single ski once you’ve learned the ropes. A ‘race ski’ is normally between 7 and 8ft in length with two full boot bindings.

The power and length of the boat will determine the length of your ski line as well as the water conditions and the kind of speed you anticipate racing at on that particular day. Estimating the most suitable length for that race is a knack you acquire over time, but the aim is for the skier to be skiing on the ‘best water’ there is behind the boat, whilst avoiding the line dipping into the water or becoming slack. Most ski racers use the ‘wrapped’ position, which was adopted from the Australians in

1979. The wrapped position involves the skier using two handles which go around each side of the body to be held together with one hand, you should sit into this harness and reach forward with the other hand to hold a third handle, positioned at arm’s length away. This technique transfers the strain from the arms and lower back to the upper legs and was popularised by Tony Bennett, an Australian skier. Using this technique enabled him to endure higher speeds for greater periods of time.

Water Ski Races can take place over a set distance or period of time, although this is more common in the UK. Times vary dependant on the category of race but can range from 10 minutes and upwards.

Skiers generally start at the same time and compete in an out and out race around a set course. Success rests entirely on the team working together.

The skier has to be physically fit enough, the observers need total concentration and the driver will need to use their own judgement, to get them around the course in the fastest possible time.

Observers will need to be able to relay signals spontaneously from the skier to the driver and read the skier to be able to optimise their performance while also keeping the driver informed of other boats and skiers that are nearby. How well the team work together can mean the difference between winning and losing.

There are many Water Ski Clubs around the country that are strongly geared towards racing. They will have experienced skiers, observers, drivers and coaches to offer help and advice to anyone new to the sport. If you have a boat, they can also offer advice should you need any special modifications and recommend who is best to help you.

Skiers who are interested in racing, but don’t have access to a boat, can get opportunities to take part in club races and can learn the ropes from other club members.

They can provide you with useful and important information which will help you get involved with Water Ski Racing. There are a number of other resources available, such as videos available of National and International races. If you’ve never witnessed a race, look out for these and see for yourself how exciting a sport this really is.

As with all sports, there are countries which have stronger teams, Australia has the largest number of ski racers for example and their annual race, The Southern 80, which takes place on the Murray River in Victoria often has close to 1,000 participants. The UK is also a strong contender in Water Ski Racing.

You can learn a lot from Britain’s teams and your local club will be only too pleased to introduce you and help you along in this thrilling team sport.
