They provide different level of protection to the user and the research material. In Class I type of cabinets, you will get personnel and environmental protection but no product protection. If there is a certain risk involved then only the Biosafety cabinet are used since aerosols might be formed in the process. Laminar hoods are also available which might be confused with these cabinets as they both are used as enclosed work places. But Laminar hoods protect only the samples where as the cabinets protect the environment, the personnel and the samples.
