A message from the Regional Director

Dear EMR On behalf of the Regional Team & the Organizing committee: Let me taking the chance to warmly thank you for attending the EMR regional Meeting 2017, Beirut - Lebanon.

We are sharing with you this report with you on EMR13. In the next few pages shall summarise the different aspects and topics of the regional meeting. Providing to you readers with all the information that will brief you on the outcomes of our meeting this years. But first let me share with you a personal view on our region. I have attending the last 6 regional meetings and in our Regional Meeting 2017 I was really so amazed with development and quality of regional meeting not only in hosting the event, but also to National Membership Organizations and members of the region, motivation, enthusiasm and commitment to gain and share knowledge and experiences and nd serving the region & the federation on the local, national, regional and international level.

It’s been 13 years since we had our first regional meeting. IFMSA had been working with its NMOs to provide a stage for medical students to reflect their thoughts and ideas. Extending it to sharing opportunities and capacity building in different eras. It is the time we hold our hands tighter and walk together the ladder up high. Today we are healthcare activists tomorrow we are healthcare providers & leaders.

From where I stand I would like to extremely thank the EMR Regional Team 2016/2017 to being dedicated to ensure to provide to you outstanding sessions and delivering high quality content during the regional meeting, but also IFMSA Team of Officials that took part in the regional meeting and its sessions and last but not least, the astonishing Organizing Committee of EMR 13 on the marvelous duty & providing us with environment to excel for our region.

In the end, once again thank you to all those took part of the Eastern Mediterranean Region Regional Meeting 2017 in beautiful Beirut. We are looking forward to meet you all again in EMR14 but this time in magical Morocco.

Public Health Leadership Training (PHLT) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Participants

1. Participants have the tools to both improve activities they Facilitators are/were active in on their local level, as well as create new Ella Frau Activities (campaigns, field work, advocacy,...) which will IFMSA Standing Committee on Public Health Direcotr have a significant impact in their communities.

2. They also have basic knowledge on how to approach Ahmad Abbadi stakeholders and create collaborations with them in order to SCOPH Regional Assistant for EMR more effectively pursue their goals.

3. Participants have worked extensively on antimicrobial resistance and how to structure a well organized activity related to the field of work 4. Follow up with the participants has been maintained through emails and to get certificates (6 months from the time of the workshop).

International Training on Disaster Medicine (ITDM) Participants

This ITDM workshop provided 11 medical students from 6 Facilitators countries of EMR region with introduction and knowledge of Jessica Zhang disaster medicine, disaster risk management and reduction. IFMSA Standing Committee This workshop provided platform for students from Marian Sedlak IFMSA Liaison Officer on Human Rights and neighbouring countries and from different socioeconomic, Peace issues cultural, national, religious backgrounds to discuss their Diana Viglaska perceptions of disaster medicine’s general and specific Training Disaster Medicine Trainers (TdmT) graduate needs in the region, especially in humanitarian issues.

Abubaker Mohamed Participants fully used this opportunity to discuss and explore Training Disaster Medicine Trainers (TdmT) possible utilisation of their newly acquired skills for benefits graduate of their peer medical students and communities around them.

This workshops certainly contributed to creation of medical students' movement to advocate for the need of disaster medicine and DRR in medical schools' curricula, as well as for further training on disaster medicine for health care professionals. It also inspired several participants to apply for the 2017 edition of IFMSA & CRIMEDIM Training disaster medicine Trainers (TdmT).

Training Old Trainers (TOT) Participants

The Workshop did not go as planned, firstly due to the limited Facilitators number of participants we had and were even contemplating Andrej Martin Vujkovac of not conducting the workshop (at the time, we only had 4 IFMSA Vice-President for Capacity Building people present). In the end we conducted most of the Gaella Rached sessions. On the last day, we our participants were Capacity Building Regional Assistant for supposed to deliver two sessions, however this was EMR cancelled. The trainers felt that the participants were not ready to deliver (mostly due to lack of time to prepare) and the trainers of the TOT conducted the sessions instead. The participants will still have the opportunity to earn their certificates, by assisting the work of the RA, who will also follow up on them in the future.

Professional & Research Exchange Training (PRET) Participants

In general, the PRET in Lebanon was appointed by the Facilitators participants one of the best experiences they ever had. We Mauro Camacho IFMSA Standing Committee on Research had a great infrastructure and organization form the part of Exchange Director the OC what helped making this workshop perfect.

It was for sure an amazing opportunity to train the EMR LEOs and LOREs and motivate them to work in our IFMSA Exchanges.

For the soft-skills training a great contribution was provided by Arij (SCOME-D), Sharif (EMR RD), Jessica (SCORP-D), Salma (EMR GA) and Nissa (IMCC-Denmark).

Capacity Building Sessions

Basic Project Management Participants

The aim of this session was to introduce participants to Facilitators project management concept, which is something they do in Elissa Abou Khalil their work within their NMO without exactly knowing the SCORA Regional Assistant for EMR theory behind it. So, through a concrete example that was used during the whole session, and through an interactive informal discussion, the theory was presented and applied directly by the participants. SMART objectives were presented, in addition to the planning → monitoring → evaluation theory and the precontemplation → contemplation → preparation → action → maintenance concept. The stakeholders and their power of influence theory was also presented, each one of them defined and applied.

Basic Creative Thinking Participants

The goals of this workshop were: • Trainees to understand what is creativity and that it can be learned and is not only innate • Trainees to learn 2 different theories about creative thinking • Trainees to apply these theories and learn how to properly use them in everyday tasks

Basic Fundraising Participants

My two main goals of the fundraising basic session were that: 1. The participants get out of the session knowing that fundraising is something that they can do even if they

donate like to ask for money they still have a place to contribute in the cycle of fundraising.

2. To have the basic knowledge of the fundraising knowledge without going in too deep in the strategies and methods so they can just do a fundraising process successfully.

First of all I showed them a little presentation about fundraising in general, then used the Inside-Out method (Which divides fundraising options into circles while the closest to our work as IFMSA is the closest to the center and that the goal is to get all the items from the outside circles closer to the center circle) to explain the principle of fundraising. After that I explained the fundraising cycle while elaborating on its components and then explained the process of identifying prospects in particular because it is a very important step and a bit harder than other steps and used a table that they can use for that. Then made a few exercises for fundraising in general to see what they have learned and if they got the main ideas and then wrapped up with a few tips of mine.

Basic Time Management Participants

Goals. To give the trainees an idea of time management and Facilitators techniques on how to implement it.

Advanced Leadership Participants

My two main goals of this session were that: Facilitators 1. The participants know about the thing that is called Khalid Al Saddar (Leadership Presence), Why is it important and how to Training support Division Director IFMSA-Jo actually acquire it.

2. The participants to know how to act and interact in different situations with different types of employees that they are responsible for.

I started talking about the "Leadership Presence", why is it important and how to acquire it, while elaborating about every step of to actually highlight the things they have to have or do to acquire that presence among their peers. Then after that I gave a few tips on how to become a better leader and to create a reason for people to acknowledge you as a leader. And then followed up by explaining a certain system to match between the type of a leader and the type of an employee that he is responsible for, what was a scoring system that consisted of 4 types of actions by the leader that are matched with 4 types of employees that the leader encounters. And finally I had some acting scenarios planned but due to shortage of time we didn’t complete them.

During the meeting it is essential to guarantee that all the participants are following and that they are learning new things. Debates and sharing ideas are essential elements in the session .The active participation of the members in building the session is also crucial .They have to feel that they have an input and that this input counts .Finally I would say that the EMR experience is one of its kind .Apart from fueling us as a team with motivation and joy it just opened my eyes to the vast empty lands that we have to occupy build and draw our prints on . The members are the fuel that will get us to move on and seize new opportunities.

The SCOPE SCORE Sessions were conducted by the Facilitators SCOPE RA, Bilal T. Mustafa, along with the SCORE Bilal Mustafa SCOPE Regional Assistant for EMR Director, Mauro Camacho, and supervised by the SCOPE Director, Rodrigo Roa. The sessions covered Rodrigo Enrique Roa IFMSA Standing Committee on Professional the essential of the IFMSA exchange program, where it Exchanges Director stands and how it is conducted. With the variety of Mauro Camacho experience level amongst participants, interaction IFMSA Standing Committee on Research between participants was an integral part in leading the Exchange Director session forward especially in the common sessions.

Three Small working Groups took place, (Visa Issues, Outgoing Selection and Marketing/Travel Assistance Fund) whose outcomes are attached in this report.

EMR 13 SCOPH Sessions had many participants from different NMOs. Together they discussed different topics and shared many experiences. The sessions were designed to give the participants maximum knowledge and help them in creating or improving their own activities back home. One of our main outcomes from the sessions was for participants to gain a basic knowledge of rights in their region and the international community, and learn more about advocacy as a tool for defending these rights. We also aimed that they gain the tools needed to brainstorm effectively and think of long term sustainable projects in their NMOs. Another objective was to engage them in relevant topics such as Disaster Medicine and the Refugee Crisis, setting them up with the essential background information, and introducing them to creative feasible solutions to tackle these issues. Outcomes will be followed up via some outcome- oriented questions in the evaluation form, and through direct contact with the participants and/or their NORPs.

Theme Event | Disaster & Crisis Management The Theme event for EMR was divided into 4 separate practical workshops, which was a very nice step towards the increased interactivity of theme events universally. 4 workshops were precisely selected to satisfy the needs of 92 participants. Appointment of external speakers was done in precise and close coordination by the OC and the LRP. I highly appreciate collaboration and communication with the OC representatives, especially EMR regional director and the OC theme event coordinator. Following workshops were conducted, with respective facilitators: 1. Combat life saver and Tactical combat casualty care training by Mr. Malik Wehbi, Tactical combat casualty care trainer in Lebanese Civil Defense; 2.

Management of dead bodies in disaster situations by Ms. Megan Bassendale - National Forensic Advisor and Ms. Lea Bassil - Forensic Advisor in Lebanese International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC); 3. Obstacles facing refugees by Dr. Jakob Arhem Public health officer of UNHRC; 4. Role of Social Media by Mr.Ralph Aoun - Digital Entrepreneur and Blogger and Mr. AbdelHalim Abdallah of MENA Digital Communications Officer of MSF. Overall, the idea of having parallel theme event workshops instead of panel talk was very efficient. Topics were introduced in a more personal and specific way, participants had a possibility to engage with speakers and also try out some practical skills. The feedback from participants about this structure was very positive (compared to one panel talk or lecture), therefore I would recommend to keep (or at least include) such composition of theme events for future IFMSA meetings too.

IFMSA Strategic Plan 2017/20 One of the priorities of this term is to develop the new IFMSA Strategy, document that will guide the efforts of the Federation’s leadership from 2017 to 2020. As a student-led organization, one of the main challenges of IFMSA is a high turnover rate of active members and as a result. Having therefore a strategy that stretches over three years ensures a certain rate of development in a certain direction for the whole organization, as a strategic plan represents the ideas and ideals of more than individuals.

As we are about to draft a new strategy for the Federation, in line with IFMSA vision and mission, it is essential to consult our members, as well as different stakeholders, in this process. This third consultation session took place in the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting, with over 80 participants.

After explaining what a strategy is all about, and its importance for our Federation, we exposed the five priorities that we will be working on to develop this document. We particularly put an emphasis on four priorities, as these were the ones we will be consulting them on: Prioritization, finances, representation and participation, and outside-in.

Participants were then invited to join the priority of their interest, each group being coordinated by two IFMSA officials. We then conducted an affinity diagram, where the participants had the possibility to brainstorm first on the topic and coming up with ideas that they were writing on post-its that we put on the wall later on. The participants were then invited to move the post-its as they wish, in silence, as to categorize them. At a final stage, they had to agree on labels for each category, labels that we took out as the main input of our consultation.

The consultation session was very successful and very outcome-oriented. We are excited to bring these input up in the discussion and in the draft of our strategy.

Comments: • Participants hoped for more visa assistance, more systematic registration assistance prior to the EMR • It was also suggested that the time period of EMR be extended allow more training sessions and a longer IFMSA officials session • Participants wanted better food, better time management • Earlier social program was suggested to allow for better views and pictures • It was noted that if logistics team required assistance, it should be the other members of the organizing committee to come help, and not the hosting delegation • One participant wanted explanation on Pepsi sponsorship, stating that it was quite out of line of IFMSAs values • One participant noted that the meeting rooms were a bit small or loud (as they were joint), and that the improvised rooms for training sessions were quite a mess
