IFAMA 2022 World Conference

WELCOME TO THE 32nd IFAMA WORLD CONFERENCE

Dear present & future captains of the agribusiness & food systems industry, members of the faculty & colleagues, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the tropical shores of sunny Costa Rica amidst the grand tradition of hospitality and gourmet offerings. This is momentous cusp of IFAMA’s history, whereby we are holding our first physical conference after the two-year hiatus was thrust upon us. In IFAMA’s 32-year history, it was the first time we had not hosted our annual in-person event. The pulls and pressures on the food systems have been exposed over the last 2-1/2 years which are leading to frequent disruptions in many of the traditional supply chains. Commodity prices are soaring which are adversely impacting consumers. In pursuit of IFAMA’s purpose, to serve as catalyst and clearing house of ideas to respond to the challenging needs of the world, the IFAMA 2022 program will focus on sustainability of agribusiness: The role of technology, of network management and consequent value chain disruptions. The discussions will center arounds issues of agriculture, data privacy and ownership, and the challenges of digitization and technological processes. The conference Co-chairs: Esteban R. Brenes from INCAE Business School, Irene Alvarado from EARTH University and Juan José Bolaños CEO Piñalbo and their team have put together some insightful, and invigorating discussions, that include a bevy of international speakers. I am certain this conference will not only stir introspection of the challenges facing our sector, but it will also spark new ideas and thoughts providing us a great opportunity to expand our networks, build new associations and friendships. I encourage you to take time on the side lines of the conference to build your own memories and take aways.

Raj Vardhan, IFAMA Board President IFAMA 2022 World Conference

SYMPOSIUM SPECIAL SESSIONS KEYNOTE: UNIVERSITY TRANSFORMATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN RESPONSE TO AGRIBUSINESS AND SOCIETIAL NEEDS Saturday, June 18 | 08:30 - 10:00 | Emory Cocke Auditorium Speaker: Dr. James French Director of Transforming Higher Education Project, Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, American University of Beirut, and Secretary-General of the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA). University education in the agricultural sciences has evolved—growing much more complex and intertwined with other cross-disciplines as it intersects with health and nutritional science, biosciences, engineering, environmental impacts, the food system, value chains and agricultural markets. Educational institutions worldwide are undergoing scrutiny as many question whether the current agricultural programs are adequately preparing graduates with the skills needed to respond to future needs of their employers and society. This session explores the challenges and opportunities confronting agriculture, higher education, and the role that business and entrepreneurial education plays as an integral component of undergraduate programs in agriculture. How do we best prepare the future leaders in agriculture to become ethical, creative, and innovative thinkers who are able to meet the challenges of the 21st century?

SHOWCASE: MANZANA VERDE: UBERIZING THE FOOD SERVICE Sunday, June 19 | 09:00 - 10:30 | Academic 3 Room 1 Presenter: Ernesto Gallo, PAD Escuela de Dirección Universidad de Piura Larissa Arias, co-founder and COO of Manzana Verde, a start up in Piura, north of Peru, conquered the Lima, market, the Peruvian capital city with 13 million inhabitants and entered in Mexico DF, Guadalajara and Monterrey cities with 30 million inhabitants, with the increasing support from Universidad de Piura Incubators Hub, an accelerator and finally a venture capital who invested 1.5 million dollars believing in their scalability. Uberizing slabs along the food chain of very perishable products, creating value at each stage: the “kitchens” (restaurants), deliverers and final consumers. They put in final consumer tables ready to eat, tasty, low calories, just in time meals. Based on a platform coordinated from Lima Perú integrating hundreds of mini hubs in different cities. This case analyzes the scalability and the sustainability of their competitiveness. From a theoretical point of view, this start up is disruptive with respect to the theory of the firm, I O, and RBV of strategy. 14

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FUTURE OF AGRIBUSINESS Saturday, June 18 | 14:00 - 14:15 | Salón Conferencias Tim & Denny Solso Speaker: Michael Gucovsky, Board of Directors, The Sustainability Laboratory The future of agribusiness will face many challenges in the coming decades as the global population and demand for food increases while the availability of farmable land and traditional agricultural jobs is shrinking. Many regions and sectors of the global food system are becoming more capital intensive, vertically integrated, and managed by fewer hands. A structural transformation is necessary but it will offer us many opportunities.

ROUNDTABLE: TEACHING CASE METHODS WORKSHOP: WRITING AND TEACHING WITH CASE STUDIES Sunday, June 19 | 14:00 - 15:30 | Academic 3 Room 1 Case Conference Co-Chairs: Brent Ross, Michigan State University (Facilitator); Bernardo Piazaardi, University of Austral; and Rocio Paniagua, San Telmo Business School The case method is an active learning tool which helps participants assess, analyze and act upon complex business issues. Cases effectively facilitate knowledge transfer. Whether you are looking for new business strategies or curious about how to share or teach others, you are sure to find some interesting. The Symposium and Forum will showcase two unique teaching cases and a case methods workshop that uses a Harvard-style teaching format. These sessions are hands-on and designed to stimulate group discussion. They are open to anyone interested in how they might utilize teaching cases and are willing to participate in the group discussions. A copy of the full cases to be discussed will be sent to participants who sign up in advance.

GET YOUR RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL Sunday, June 19 | 08:00 - 09:00 | Academic 3 Room 1 Moderator: Gregory Baker Gregory Baker, formerly an Executive Editor of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Review (IFAMA’s Journal), and other Managing Editors from the IFAMR will share the secrets to getting your research published in an international journal. This popular session answers your questions on how to structure your research so that it contains the components of high-quality, scholarly work and how to properly prepare the manuscript for the peer review process.

Working together for regenerative agriculture Empowering future leaders to advance sustainability in agribusiness @ IFAMA 2022 student case competition Bayer Crop Science #FoodChainPartnership Bayer4Crops #FoodChainPartnership

In the Food Chain Partnership – and in agriculture as a whole – there is a growing ambition to make agriculture regenerative. We must achieve more than carbon neutrality and implement practices that make a positive contribution to ecosystems and people. By protecting and nurturing our key resources – soil, water, biodiversity, livestock – we can make our ecosystems stronger, 26

increase their capacity to grow food and store carbon, and promote health and prosperity in rural communities. That’s why we’re committed to building Food Chain Partnerships to place new innovations and practices in the hands of farmers. And we’re adding dedicated training on Regenerative Agriculture to BayG.A.P. so it has real meaning and impact within farmers’ lives. IFAMA 2022 World Conference

STUDENT CASE COMPETITION Twenty-two teams representing universities from around the world have gathered on the EARTH University to compete in the IFAMA 17th annual International Student Case Competition. The competition begins with the preliminary rounds on Saturday. Each team is given a specially prepared case study that provides an in-depth synopsis of a “real world” business problem. The teams have just four hours to analyze the problem, formulate a solution, and create a Power Point presentation. The teams then present their solution before a panel of judges representing both industry and academia. The best presentations from three divisions (Undergraduate, Graduate, Early Career Professionals) will be invited to advance to a Finals Round on Sunday for another day of preparations.

MONDAY, JUNE 20

08:30 – 10:00 SESSION 1: INAUGURATION / KEYNOTE SPEECH: Food 5.0: How we feed the future Hotel Real Intercontinental Real 2 and 3 WELCOME SPEAKERS: Esteban R. Brenes, Irene Alvarado & Juan José Bolaños Conference Co Chairs Enrique Bolaños, President, INCAE Business School Arturo Condo, President, EARTH University Raj Vardhan, President, IFAMA Laura Bonilla Coto, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Costa Rica Francisco Gamboa, Minister of Economy, Industry and Commerce, Costa Rica KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Robert Saik, CEO, AGvisorPro, Canada While experts deliberate the optimal foods required to improve and sustain human health, we’re ignoring a truth that affects us all: to support a population nearing 10 billion by 2050, agriculture must become infinitely sustainable. To feed the world, we have to grow 10,000 years’ worth of food in the next thirty years, which means farmers worldwide must increase food production by 60 to 70 percent. A small percentage of those “farmers of consequence” are being called upon to grow the vast majority of the world’s staple food supply. While mighty in their ability, they need support from people who increasingly have little understanding of how they operate. Robert Saik will take you on a journey from the “muscle era” of farming to a future where the convergence of new technologies like sensors, robotics, and machine learning make infinite sustainability achievable. With the veil lifted on modern agriculture practices, you’ll be inspired to contribute to a culture where farmers can adopt the science and tools they need to carry out their mission of feeding the planet. 10:00 – 10:30 COFFEE BREAK Hotel Real Intercontinental Terrace in front of Real 2 and 3 10:30 – 12:00 SESSION 2: Productivity gaps in the agri-food system: New approaches and technologies Hotel Real Intercontinental Real 2 and 3 MODERATOR: Roberto Artavia, President, Viva Trust, Costa Rica PANELISTS: Nicola Shadbolt, Chair of the Plant & Food Crown Research Institute; Climate Change Commissioner; and Professor, Massey University, New Zealand Jannik Aaron Dresemann, Agri benchmark & Thünen Institute of Farm Economics, Germany Arno Van der Maden, Owner and CEO, N&S del Trópico S.A, Netherlands & Costa Rica Estefania Purcelli, Lead Economist at NASA Harvest Consortium, University of Maryland, USA The essence of this panel is to establish the imperative of enhancing productivity gains and sustainability, particularly in emerging economies around the world, in order to achieve food security, income growth in rural areas, and provide a better response to the challenges posed by the developing climate crisis. 28

IFAMA 2022 World Conference

There are huge gaps in productivity and sustainability that affect many of the countries in which agriculture still represents a significant portion of employment, and an unfortunate and unnecessary source of poverty in rural areas, malnutrition in rural and urban areas, soil degradation, water misuse and pollution, and a growing dependence on aid or international trade. The purpose of this panel is to analyze the situation with data and applied conceptual frameworks, present case examples of countries at risk and their implication for the global and local SGDs; explore what some of the proposed solutions imply in terms of fostering an enabling platform for their productive transformation; present and discuss innovative solutions based on technological and scientific innovation, on local and international policy innovations; and the best way to deploy and share them across countries and regions. Participants will better under the problems and risks affecting agricultural productivity growth and sustainability, particularly in emerging economies; and what are some key ideas and policies to foster and “new green revolution” based on science, technology, continuous innovation, and a commitment to deliver it in such a way that reaches those in need across the world. 12:00 – 13:30 LUNCH / STUDENT CASE COMPETITION FINALS SHOWCASE I (Sponsored by Bayer) Team Level: Early Career Professionals Hotel Real Intercontinental Real 2 and 3 INTRODUCTION: The IFAMA global Student Case Competition is a capstone event of IFAMA’s annual conferences. Student Case Competition Co-Chair, Juan Jose Bolanos, and the 2022 Case Study author, Brent Ross, Michigan State University will introduce the grand finale showcase. But what can they teach us about regenerative agriculture? Regenerative agriculture can be a powerful tool in reducing in-field GHG emissions, cutting the environmental impact of crop protection, and empower smallholder farmers worldwide. This session explores the topic of regenerative agriculture and why it is a vital component of sustainability. Key stakeholders from Solidaridad, SAN, Triptolemos, IICA, and Bayer will discuss projects and initiatives they are conducting in the private sector and we’ll reveal just what spiders are teaching us about this topic. 15:00 – 15:30 COFFEE BREAK Hotel Real Intercontinental Terrace in front of Real 2 and 3 IFAMA 2022 World Conference

15:30 – 17:00 SESSION 4 — The future of agri-food education Hotel Real Intercontinental Real 2 and 3 MODERATOR: Tanya Müller García, President, Zamorano University, Honduras PANELISTS: Larry Robertson, Founder and President, Lighthouse Consulting, USA Jorge Raul Rivera, Professor, Coffee Science & Technology, Zamorano University, Honduras Tony Salas, CEO and Founder of Shared-X In this new era of the post-pandemic, stakeholders in the food and agribusiness chains are slowly adapting to a new normal. Yet, in less than three decades, the world population will increase by 2 billion and 70% of the people will be living in cities. The global demand for food is growing while it must become ultimately more sustainable. To achieve these ambitious targets requires that we overcome many hurdles that include navigating through political-legal systems, socio-cultural differences, facilitating economic gains while preserving precious natural resources, and equipping our workforces with the skills and education needed to adapt to the technological transformation. Panelists will engage in a rich dialog concerning of how this impacts the food and agribusiness sector—and for Higher Education—fully aware that in order for companies to flourish in a post pandemic environment requires they pay attention to the Facts, are quick to understand and anticipate Impacts, and can implement Acts that will generate positive change. Higher Education must accelerate alternative education pathways knowing these also play a pivotal role in future workforce development. 17:00 – 19:00 SESSION 5 — STUDENT CASE COMPETITION FINALS SHOWCASE II Team Levels: Graduate, Undergraduate Hotel Real Intercontinental Real 2 and 3, and Robles (parallel sessions) MODERATORS: Juan José Bolaños & Esteban R. Ideally, nothing is wasted, and the products of one industry form the resources for another, thus replacing the extraction of new resources. A successful transition to a fully circular economy requires a significant change in the way companies work as well as consumer thinking. Instead of defining success solely by last quarter’s earnings, companies will need to make decisions based on the environmental and social impact of their actions. 15:00 – 15:30 COFFEE BREAK Hotel Real Intercontinental Terrace in front of Real 2 and 3 15:30 – 17:00 SESSION 4 — From pains to solutions: How to address innovation in an ESG world Hotel Real Intercontinental Real 2 and 3 MODERATOR: Marcos Fava Neves, Professor at FGV and USP (Brazil) and Director of Markestrat Organization PANELISTS: Marlon Masis Campos, CEO, Mesofoods, Columbia Alvaro Villalobos, Chairman of the Board, Dos Pinos Cooperative, Central America and the Caribbean Alessandra Fajardo, Food Chain Partnerships Director–Strategy & Sustainability, Bayer, Brazil The world is going through a huge process of change after several events that happened in the last 5 to 10 years. revolution. Some of these better-known technologies include the Internet of Things (IoT), commercial platforms such as Uber, Airbnb; and cyber-physical systems such as cloud computing. These technological advancements are reshaping agricultural production and the entire agri-food chain. While Precision Agriculture was first introduced in the 1980s, it continues to grow more sophisticated as sensors optimize the efficiency of many inputs—especially water and soil. At the same time, these sensors are generating enormous amounts of information, which makes it necessary to master data mining. Blockchain technology is also offering new ways to manage traceability throughout the entire food supply chain. All this change is occurring while the world and agriculture faces historic climate change challenges and global population growth. This panel will discuss the most important technological advancements occurring in agriculture and how these technologies will transform the ag-sector and its implications for producing more food with diminishing resources. Members of this panel are leaders in technological change in the ag industry and will share their experiences and their vision for the future. 18:00 – 21:00 PRESIDENTIAL BANQUET INCAE Business School, Foro Luis Poma The Presidential Banquet is a gala affair that includes the presentation of several awards including the winners of the 2022 Student Case Competition, the Best Paper, Best Case Study, Fellows Award, Rising Star Award, Distinguished Service Awards and more.
