Rus in vrede Hannes. Deur Hendrie Bredenkamp (84-0074)

AAPJAG LEDEWERWING: Op 2 Mei 2020 vind die jaarlikse GUNS & BOWS / KAAPJAG LEDEWERWING TREKKING by The Dunes, Arniston, plaas.

ETIKET VIR JAGTERS Deel 2

V

20

Daar is min dinge wat my meer irriteer as wanneer iemand a.g.v. As jy weet dat jy

Baie jagters is heiliger op hul gewere as oor hul vrouens/meisies, en hoe sal jy voel as jou pelle sonder jou toestemming jou vrou begin hanteer? Ongevraagde raad is dikwels irriterend.

NORTHERN KAROO HUNT CAPE BUFFALO AND ROAN ANTELOPE

By: Graham MacMillan

O

n Sunday November the 17th, 2019 I left Robertson in the Western Cape full of excitement and anticipation for the big game hunting that would take place over the next few days. We drove up to Kimberley in the Northern Cape, with Joe da Silva, our Professional Hunter from Cape Town. On arrival at the Wag ‘n Bietjie Lodge, we met our lovely hostess Marie and her mother. We were pointed to our rooms and then we got to meet the resident Professional Hunter, Stephan Bann. We were taken to the shooting range for some shooting practice as

well as to sight in the rifles. I had to get acquainted with the rifles and calibres that I would be using for the hunt as I would not be using my own . There were two rifles that I was to use for the next day’s hunt. There was a .375 H&H - Winchester Mod 70 Safari Classic with a scope and an FN Browning in .458 Winchester Magnum with open sights. This was the first time I had fired big calibre hunting rifles and I had heard the stories about the terrible recoil of the calibres, so I was a bit apprehensive. I must admit is was not like shooting

a .22, but after a bit of practice and getting used to the recoil my shooting improved to a good level of proficiency by late afternoon. The morning of the hunt arrived and I must say I was really looking forward to the day. I had been awake long before our early breakfast was announced. We set off early just after sunrise to the hunting concession area, to have a good look at which buffalo bull would make a suitable trophy for my first Buffalo hunt. In no time at all we found a good sized old bull.

DIE BONTEBOK

We were set. But seeing the Buffalo and getting to shoot the Buffalo are two completely different things. So began a long series of walking and stalking. Wind direction kept changing and a buffalo herd becoming more and more agitated as they got our scent. Eventually after much walking, stalking and trying to get a good shooting position, I finally got into a position to take a shot. My PH advised me that the .375 H & H would be a better rifle for me to use. Now it was time for the nerves to settle, to get my breathing under control and wait for that perfect moment to pull the trigger. Boom! I got a very good shot placement on the right shoulder. The Barnes X bullet hit the shoulder with a solid thud. This bull did not flinch at the bullet strike. He ran about 100 metres with the herd. When the herd stopped running he also stopped, I was now presented with what was a very small patch of left leg shoulder.

Boom! Perfect shot to the left shoulder. He went down head first into the red sand. I heard him make a very distinct bellow. We took our time and waited. Finally we moved up to the animal making sure to keep our guns trained on him. Buffaloes have taken many hunters by surprise and some of those hunters did not live to tell the story. My story was that I got myself a beautiful Cape Buffalo. The Buffalo was a 40 3/8 inch hard boss, taken at 43 metres. I personally found the .375 H&H a bit light for such a big animal but I had the PH as a backup, if things had gone wrong. It was later found that from my first shot bone shards were found in the lungs and top half of the heart. Both my shots had hit their targets.

in the herd. I was asked if I would like to hunt the Roan and I immediately agreed. The hunt turned out not to be a quick in and out hunt. There was a very, very long walk and stalk. An old bull of his size did not mature like that because he was easy meat and this bull was fully aware of his surroundings.

While taking the Buffalo back to the skinning and cold room facility, Stephan got a phone call, saying that one of the ranches had an old Roan Antelope that had to be hunted. A new young bull was replacing him

My next buffalo hunt is already being planned for the same time in 2020.

To make a long story short, I managed to get into a good shooting position and my shot was true. On the matter of the rifle recoil, I cannot remember any recoil at all. Just shows you what adrenalin can do to you. The Roan measured 29 3/8 inches and was taken at 198 metres. Both beautiful animals indeed. Great hunting in this area, beautiful country indeed, with wonderful people.

ISLAND EVOLUTION - NATURE’S MAGNIFICENT TREASURE OF SURPRIZES

BY: Dr Kas Hamman

M

Introduction Islands and geographically isolated areas often create ideal conditions for animals and plants to reflect weird and interesting adaptations to specific environmental conditions. Just to refresh your memories, evolution entails the change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations over successive generations. The process of evolution has given rise to biological diversity at every level of the biological organisation of species, individual organisms, and molecules. Evolution is the process through which animal and plant species adapt to changing circumstances, with natural selection as a key enabling mechanism. The isolation or confinement of species to limited spaces can lead to interesting but sometimes bizarre outcomes, especially if there are few predators to keep them in check.

adagascar, Mauritius, the Galapagos Islands, Australia, and New Zealand to mention but a few well-known islands in the southern hemisphere, are excellent real-life examples of the effect of isolation. On especially the smaller islands, species often need to compete with other species for a limited supply of food and they are unable to migrate to warmer or colder climates. Due to these and other environmental factors, evolution on islands often takes place at a higher pace than on mainland environments. It often comes down to adapt or die. Entire groups of animals and plants are often missing on some islands due to their inability to adapt to the special or unique conditions that prevail

there. Animals and plants that do survive and prosper on islands are often found to be unique occurring nowhere else on the planet, and can on occasion look very different. Islands with their unique forms of endemism provide rewarding sources of study material for many naturalists and researchers. Because land birds rarely make it to isolated islands, the few pioneering species that dó arrive and colonize often find a wide-open ecosystem with many vacant niches for exploiting food resources. The absence of competitors makes it possible for the colonizing species to be successful and multiply, evolving and spiralling or radiating off into many descendant species that each starts to

DIE BONTEBOK specialize in different food and habitat types.

Island gigantism

Large mammal carnivores are often absent on islands because of insufficient range or because of their inability to disperse over water. Birds, reptiles or smaller carnivores, which often then develop to larger-thannormal size on these islands to occupy ecological niches normally occupied by large predators. For example, on some of the Caribbean islands like Cuba, and on Madagascar and New Zealand, some or all apex predators were birds like eagles, falcons and owls, including some of the largest known examples of these groups. However, birds and reptiles generally are less efficient as large predators than mammalian carnivores. Since small size usually makes it easier for herbivores to escape or hide from predators, the reduced predation pressure on islands often allow them to grow larger. Small herbivores may also benefit from the absence of competition from large herbivores. Large land tortoises that evolved on some islands are probably the result of decreased vulnerability to the scarcity of food and/or water and thus competition. The larger sizes may enable these animals to survive for longer intervals without these necessities or enable them to travel long distances to obtain scarce food or water. Periods of such scarcity may be a greater threat on relatively smaller oceanic islands than on the mainland. Island gigantism is therefore usually an evolutionary response caused by the absence of constraints on the size of mostly small animals normally caused by factors such as predation and/or competition. Territorial behaviour may also favour the phenomenon of island gigantism. A study on Anaho Island in Pyramid

33

Lake, Nevada USA, showed that territorial reptile species tended to be larger on the island compared to the mainland, particularly in the case of smaller species. Larger size territorial species enable individuals to compete and to defend their territories more effectively. This provides additional stimulus to evolve toward larger size species in isolated populations. Island size plays a role in determining the extent of gigantism. Smaller islands generally accelerate the rate of evolution in organism size, and organisms there evolve to greater extremes in smaller and/or larger than average size.

Island dwarfism

Constraints on islands can operate differently depending on the size of the animal, however; for example, while small herbivores may escape predation by hiding, large herbivores may deter predators by intimidation. As a result, the complementary phenomenon namely island dwarfism can also result from the removal of constraints related to predation and/or competition on the size of large herbivores. In contrast, dwarfism among predators more commonly results from the presence of constraints associated with limited and smaller prey resources available on islands. Island dwarfism is not as common a phenomenon as island gigantism, observed in most major vertebrate and invertebrates groups. Closer to home, Cape leopards are much smaller than those found elsewhere in Africa, in fact, they are approximately half the mass. On average Cape Leopard males weigh in at around 35kg, whereas females weigh around 25kg. The smaller size of these animals is most probably the result of the isolated environments they had to adapt to and due to the smaller size and availability of prey in the mountainous habitats. These smaller

34

DIE BONTEBOK

animals are also more agile and effective hunters in these specialized but often harsh environments – similar to that found on some islands.

Some examples of Island evolution

The elephant bird (Aepyornis maximus) may well be the largest bird to have ever walked the earth and it laid the biggest bird eggs on record. This giant flightless bird was endemic or native to Madagascar. The elephant bird had no natural predators on the island, meaning it could afford to lay one egg per year and take good care of it. This egg was left undisturbed and its chick (a sturdy little fellow in its own right) had excellent prospects of survival. The elephant bird probably became extinct somewhere around the year 1000, shortly after man first set foot on Madagascar. The egg of an elephant bird is 29.7 cm long, 20.5 cm wide, and its shell is 3 mm thick! Madagascar’s unique biodiversity reflects the fact that the island has been isolated for about 88 million years. The prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana started approximately 180 million years ago. The Madagascar-Antarctica-Australasia-India landmass separated from the Africa-South America landmass around 135 million years ago. Madagascar later split from north migrating India about 88 million years ago, allowing plants and animals on the island to evolve in isolation. As result of this isolation, Madagascar is home to an abundance of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Approximately 90 percent of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar are endemic, including the lemurs (a type of primate), the carnivorous fossa and many birds. The island has been classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as a biodiversity hotspot. We all know the tragic story of the dodo! This bird is world-famous because it is no longer exists! Living on an island makes you vulnerable. As soon as new animals or especially man set foot ashore, you are exposed to dangers that you are not equipped deal with. If you are not adapted to deal with enemies or predators, it can be over quickly. That is unfortunately how the dodo on Mauritius and Reunion came to their end. The dodo was a pigeon-like bird that could no longer fly. That too is an typical adaptation to island life, which in this case contributed to its tragic demise. When the first people arrived on the island during the 16th and 17th centuries, they brought with them in their ships rats, monkeys, and pigs. It is not difficult to figure out what happened next. The dodos on these islands could not flee or protect their eggs and were easy targets for the ruthless intruders. With the last dodo, the entire species died out. This was the first animal on record that died out at the hands of humans, which is why the dodo has become the icon of extinction. Prior to recent human colonization that introduced rodents, cats and many other intruders, the only placental land mammals found on the islands of New Zealand were three species of bats. Birds occupied or dominated all

major niches in the New Zealand animal ecology. Nine Moa species inhabited the New Zeeland islands and the two largest species were 3,6 meters high and weighed up to 230kg. These large flightless grazing birds were functionally similar to antelope or cattle in other habitats. The huge Haast’s eagle with up to 3-meter wingspans were the apex predators who filled the same niche as top mammalian-predators, such lions, leopards etc. One study estimated the total moa population at 3,000 to 4,500 breeding pairs, so Haast’s eagles would have been very vulnerable to any decline in the number of moas. Early human settlers to New Zealand namely the Māori arrived approximately the year 1280 and they immediately started hunting these vulnerable Large flightless birds, including all moa species and as can be expected hunted them to extinction by around 1400. The loss of its primary prey, caused the Haast’s eagle to become extinct shortly afterwards. Haast’s eagles were one of the largest known true raptors. In wingspan and weight Haast’s eagles were even larger than the largest living vultures. Female eagles were significantly larger than males. Most estimates place the female Haast eagles in the range of 10–15 kg and males around 9–12 kg. One source estimates that the largest females to be up to 16.5 kg in mass, which is about 50% heavier than the largest living eagle. The strong legs and massive flight muscles of these Haast’s eagles would have enabled the birds to take off with a jumping start from the ground, despite their considerable weight.

The giant tortoise (Cylindraspis triserata) was previously numerous throughout Mauritius - both on the main island and on all the surrounding islands. Mauritius was the first of the Indian Ocean Islands to be settled by humans and it was the first to face the extermination of its unique biodiversity - including the tortoises. The tortoise species, like many island species, were reportedly friendly, curious and not afraid of humans. With the arrival of the Dutch, vast numbers of tortoises were slaughtered - either as food for humans or pigs, or to be burned for fat and oil. In addition as on many other islands invasive species such as rats, cats and pigs were introduced, which preyed on tortoises’ eggs and hatchlings. Some of these islands were at that stage already overrun with enormous numbers of introduced European rabbits, which destroyed available tortoise habitat. These giant tortoises were finally exterminated on the main island of Mauritius by about the year 1700, and soon thereafter on most of the surrounding islands by around 1735. The Galápagos giant tortoise species (Chelonoidis nigra and related species) are the largest living species of tortoise. Modern Galápagos tortoises can weigh up to 417 kg. Today, giant tortoises exist on only two remote island groups namely the Galápagos Islands 1000 km due west of mainland Ecuador and Aldabrachelys gigantea on Aldabra Island in the Indian Ocean, 700 km east of Tanzania. The Galápagos tortoises are native to seven of the Galápagos Islands, which are a group of volcanic islands about 1,000 km west of the Ecuadorian mainland. With

DIE BONTEBOK lifespans in the wild of over 100 years, these giant tortoises are one of the longest-lived vertebrates. A captive individual lived for at least 170 years. Spanish explorers, who discovered these islands in the 16th century, named them after the Spanish galápago, meaning “tortoise”. During his second voyage with the Beagle in 1835, Charles Darwin observed various survival adaptations in bird and tortoise species on these islands and these observations contributed to the development of his now well-known theory of evolution. Tortoise numbers on the Galapagos Islands declined from over 250,000 in the 16th century to a low of around 3,000 in the 1970s. Overexploitation of these species for meat and oil, habitat clearance for agriculture, and the introduction of non-native animals to the islands, such as rats, goats, and pigs caused this drastic decline. The extinction of most giant tortoise lineages can most probably attributed to over exploitation or hunting by early and modern human settlers, as the tortoises themselves have no natural enemies. Over the past 30 years, active international conservation efforts managed to curb the demise of some tortoise species on these islands. Lakes can be considered as “islands” too, since as isolated habitats, no species can leave or enter these water-bodies. At Lake Victoria in Tanzania and Lake Malawi, scientists have been able to experience the rapid evolution of fish species up close. The cichlids in both lakes form a classic illustration of the evolutionary process in isolated environments, with their ability to adapt swiftly to changing circumstances. Examples of such adaptations include the shape of their teeth, the size of their eyes and the animals’ variety of body shapes and colours. The rivers and tributaries draining the winter rainfall areas of the Cape Floristic Region has many examples of redfin minnows and other freshwater fish species that speciated as a result of isolation.

35

Giant tortoises on the Galapagos Islands barely survived The numerous isolated microhabitats associated with the winter rainfall areas of the Western and Eastern Cape gave rise to the evolution of thousands of fynbos plant species. Island species or small isolated populations are almost always vulnerable to human impact. One of the breakaway landmasses from the Gondwana separation contained what would become Australia and Antarctica. By about 30 million years ago Australia had fully separated and journeyed north on its own. Since then, changes in land formation and climate, and the physical isolation of this huge “island” from the rest of the world, led to the evolution of the unique biodiversity that we know in Australia today. More than 80% of the plants, mammals, reptiles, and frogs found there are unique to Australia and are found nowhere else in the world.

Concluding remarks

Animals and plants found on oceanic islands that have been isolated from mainland-continents for extended periods, often show unique examples of adaptations through the process of evolution to survive in these

specialised environmental conditions. The strange phenomenon of gigantism or dwarfism is often observed on such islands. Rapid speciation or “adaptive radiation” where one ancestor species evolves rapidly into many descendant species, each with its own specialized or unique way of life. One hallmark of adaptive radiation is the unusually fast pace of species forming and the diverging from one another. Some of the clearest examples of these evolutionary explosions have occurred on remote island or archipelagos (groups) that offer freedom from competition and access to a variety of habitats. Unfortunately, many of these unique life forms are not adapted to any form of predation, which makes them very vulnerable to habitat destruction caused by humans and invasive plants and animals.

Spectators are welcome to come and watch to see what the hype is all about. Ear and eye protection is compulsory. The shotgun match consisted of 3 strings, side to side and static. We were privileged to have the Vice Chairman of Central Branch, Ludy Starke, competing in his 1st Steel Masters event. Handgun and Shotgun shooting is not new to him and his experience was quickly noticed by the youngsters. His handgun was a faithful 9mm 1911 single stack! We hope to see him more often in the future.

We will look at the equipment of choice of the top 5 Steel Master shooters at Kaapjag. We will also have short interviews with the members. So look out for this exciting article in the next issue. NRA ACTION PISTOL As indicated in the previous article, Bellville Pistol Club (BPC) was adopted at the “home” of NRA Action Pistol events. The

clubs facilities are great and most important the range equipment is fantastic. We are able to shoot on electronic controlled turning targets which mean that we can accommodate 18 targets at once, saving lots of time on setting up and event time. The events that are being offered are NRA Practical event, NPA Service, NPA Carry and NPA Pocket (IDPA Compact class), NPA Magnum. Following the main NRA match, the NPA events are shot with the BPC member’s club shoot, and is an eye opener for members that would like to test their finer accuracy skills. I would almost wish to say that NPA events should be the starting place of any handgun shooter before participating in NRA Action Pistol, IPSC and IDPA. Reason being, if you can’t hit a 8” area at 25m static, you would find it quite difficult to hit that area by drawing a loaded gun out of a holster and on the move.

HANDGUN & MULTIDISCIPLINE SHOOTING

FLTR:. Andrew Young, Hein Aylward, Johan Joubert, Francois Rossouw, Gert Botes, Hans Hanekom, Josias Esterhuysen. Kaapjag members did the February NRA pistol shooting match with distances up to 50m, at Bellville shooting club. NRA Action pistol also requires inter alia, one to draw a loaded handgun from the holster, change to the weak hand and fire shots at multiple targets in a given time. So if NRA Action Pistol is a bit overwhelming, come shoot the NPA events. Your start position doesn’t require dawning from a holster. It’s a good start, then to move to getting proficient with a NRA Tyro. Then move to Action Pistol. Just my thoughts. The scheduled match of 7 March was cancelled due to the Central branch Vlakteskiet event that took place at WCSU and low interest numbers. The remaining NRA Action Pistol events at BPC are as follows; 4 April, 23 May, 13 June, 18 July. The Handgun Championships is scheduled for 22 August. Boesmanland also hosts NRA Action Pistol events which are normally held after a Chasa Centrefire Rifle match, which perfectly makes sense. Wes-Boland Branch and West Coast Branches are also actively starting to host handgun events as part of their activity “packet”. We urge members from the northern parts to support it. The matches are all postal events. Kaapjag members can be assured that it caters for all type of shooting disciplines and is becoming a “1 STOP SHOP” to shoot what is available in your safe. Yes, Kaapjag is primarily a hunting association; however, I would not have met all these members on a hunting trip in the field. It would be very rare. Sport shooting within

a hunting association promotes camaraderie and most importantly, being competent with the firearms that you own. Shooting 3 shots on a hunt, and the couple just before a hunt is not sufficient in my opinion. But that’s just me. In the next article on NRA Action pistol we will cover the details of the NRA Action Pistol event, what is required, and some useful tips. We will also cover the very successful Intertak that was held on 14 March at West Coast and the Seniors / Veterans team that were sent to the Chasa National Vlakteskiet event in Bloemfontein on 21 March. So, lots to talk about in the following edition. Shoot straight and be safe! Hein Aylward

2020 was nie maklik gewees so ver nie.

Intertak span - 2de plek. Vlnr: Dj van Zyl, Evan Lategan, Gerhard (Wildman) Francois de Villiers, en Sybrand Laubscher

he year has literally started with a bang at Central Branch. To date, we have had three shoots including our new Vlakteskiet. Congratulations to the following Central Members who won the Kaapjag Inter-branch Shoot: Greg Sykes, Ludy Starke, Wesley White and Rohan Meyer. Thank you for partaking and winning! We are indeed proud to have you as members of Kaapjag Central. In the build-up to the hunting season and for the year, we have four more shoots including the Obalie Shoot. We also have a wonderful lineup of speakers at the Members’ Evenings. One such special speaker is Raymond Heron. Mr. Heron is an historian who will be speaking about the Spionkop Battle fought in the Anglo-Boer War. I would like to thank our exceptional Committee Members

KAAPJAG SENTRAAL-TAK.

Ons gasspreker was Jack Nel.
