elkom by die Augustus 2021 uitgawe van Die Bontebok. Die Algemene Jaarvergadering van Kaapjag is vanjaar deur OverbergTak op 24 April by Bredasdorp aangebied. Daar was ook ‘n lekker skiet en dinee gewees. Fotos van die gebeure is op bladsy 12. Dit was geborg deur Guns & Bows en ons wil hulle bedank vir hul bydrae. Chasa se CEO, Stephen Palos, het vir ons ‘n artikel geskryf op bladsy 7. Hy skryf onder andere oor die nuwe Vuurwapen-wet veranderinge wat ter tafel gelê is. Ek dink dat dit ‘n saak is wat naby aan ons almal se harte lê. Dit is juis deur Kaapjag se verbintenis met Chasa dat ons die stryd beter kan stry teen die gene wat ons wapens en lewensstyl wil wegneem. Na aanlyding van die onluste en die plunder van eiendom, in KZN en Gauteng die jaar, besef mens weereens hoe belangrik vuurwapen besit is en dat jy nie altyd kan vertrou op die polisie en weermag om jou

as landsburger te beskerm nie. Partymaal rus hierdie taak op jou eie skouers, iets wat baie duidelik sigbaar was in die week van chaos. Indien jy dus ‘n vuurwapen besit vir selfvedediging gaan haal hom gerus uit die kluis en neem hom skietbaan toe. Maak seker dat jy vertroud is met jou vuurwapen en dat hy reg funksioneer. Daar is weer heelwat jagstories en artikels in die uitgawe. Ismail Kajee wat onlangs begin jag het, het vir ons sy Nyala jagstorie geskryf en wanneer jy dit lees is jy sommer saam met hom in die veld en net so opgewonde. Ludy Starke en sy vrou het saam gaan jag en sy het haar eerste bok gekiet na 40 jaar se getroude lewe. Die Kaapjag se jaarlikse jag op Baakensrug het in Julie plaasgevind (bladsy 22) en na aanleiding van die terugvoer en fotos is hierdie naweek beslis geniet deur almal. Kaapjag gaan ook deelneem aan die jaarlikse Chasa skietkompetiesies wat gehou gaan word te Bloemfontein op 24 September wat ‘n vlakteskiet sal wees en op 25 September ‘wat n multigun sal wees. Die CHASA Interprovinsiale kampioenskap te Rustenburg sal op 22 & 23 Oktober wees en Kaapjag sal daar ook deelneem. Ons wens Ludy Starck en sy span alle voorspoed toe. Ons is oortuig dat hierdie nuwe stelsel vir ons op die voorpunt gaan plaas in die industrie. Forty Years of Preparation for the Hour to Come

perfect storm began brewing in what had been a rather bland period around the start of May this year. On Sunday, 2nd May I attended a function in Pretoria where Environment Minister Barbra Creecy released the findings of a High-Level Panel which had been established in late 2019 to look into the Management, Breeding, Hunting, Trade and Handling of Elephant, Lion, Leopard and Rhinoceros. Concerns immediately began as it became clear that the majority view of the panel was to be implemented, if the Minister and her team were to have their way, and this notwithstanding the fact that the minority who held a more pro-utilisation view were the only panellists actually representing real, on the ground, investment in and utilisation of these species. More concerning was a clear bias against general ranching practices and private ownership of wildlife even though this model has proven phenomenally successful for both the conservation of wildlife as well as the benefits derived by people involved in this sector. For me, this is a real and worrying threat against the very model, and the people, who provide the majority of hunting available in South Africa! The report itself numbers 568 pages, with many dreamy platitudes about wilding and open spaces. It almost imagines a country where the lion and leopard roam among the folk in a Disney-like fairy tale! The scary part however, is that the department has thrown a decade’s good work on developing the proper National Biodiversity Economy Strategy aside, wherein we and all other invested stakeholders were proactive and diligent participants, and is trying to steamroller this pie-in-the-sky through. Fortunately, much work (lead initially and strongly by Chasa) has recently seen the formal

creation of the Sustainable Use Coalition, Southern Africa (SUCoSA) where a number of major stakeholders who are philosophically aligned, but far more importantly, bonded in friendship and trust, have come together to pool resources and develop single-minded strategies to ensure the defence of our hunting, wildlife and sustainable use heritage long into the future. This, we believe, has been a stich in time. We are working tirelessly in a concerted and cohesive manner to defeat this newfound threat. We’d hardly started digesting this problem when another bombshell in the form of the Draft Bill on Firearms Control was released by the Secretary of Police for a short public comment period. Every pro-firearm organisation reacted and began attacks against a potential law which would all but totally disarm us! The outstanding issue was the total removal of self-defence as a reason for firearm ownership, but the entire concept damaged and destroyed proper ownership, use and trade in firearms. An effective six gun limit, no firearm collecting, no reloading, limitations on types of firearms in the security sector and much more were proposed. Most readers here would, or at least should, be fully familiar with the issues by now. Chasa were already totally prepared from a strategic and approach perspective. Certainly, this threat needed multi-pronged approaches and all of the many existing firearm organisations (and a few brandnew faces in this space) kicked into gear. We were fortunate to find a good alignment to our strategy and preferred approach in the South African Arms & Ammunition Dealers Association (SAAADA) and through our joint legal advisor, Martin Hood, began to do two key things. The first was a court action designed to extend the

Stephen Palos CHASA CEO comment period and ensure that key queries we’d sent to SAPS and The Minister/Secretariat in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act were duly answered in time for us to respond with solid submissions. The other action was, through Martin, to identify a top-notch senior advocate who could do core legal research and give solid legal opinion on a number of the key aspects of the legislative processes and how the firearm ownership regime is affected and what our strengths and weaknesses are. Those familiar with legal practice will understand the profound nature of major legal briefs to top senior council. It is the stuff that “big guns” are made of in the legal world (pun intended). To this end, Martin suggested Mr Kevin Hopkins and an appropriate brief was prepared on behalf of Chasa & SAAADA. This brief should be with us by time of publication. We were fortunate in our court bid in that the Secretary of Police saw the merit and strength of our urgent application, and declined to defend the matter, opting rather to settle on terms we believed were very fair and amicable and which were made an order of court. Chasa, again on brief to Martin, submitted a substantial response to the draft bill totalled 218 pages including annexures with the core document being 37 pages long. I can unequivocally state that in our Fortieth Year, we have certainly done, and continue to do, EXACTLY what we exist to do!

KAAPJAG PRESIDENT Jag wat ’n geleentheid

k het al baie op my plaas gejag, maar nooit ’n groot geleentheid daarvan gemaak nie, tot vanjaar toe ’n goeie klomp vriende van my, my nooi om saam met hulle in die Oos-Kaap te gaan jag, sommer vir ’n week lank. Wat ’n voorreg en ondervinding was dit nie, sommer van die eerste dag af. Ons het die Maandag ons gewere ingeskiet sodat ons die volgende dag kon gaan Koedoes jag. Ek het my 200 jaar oue voorlaaier, met ’n pan (flint lock), saamgevat om te kyk of hy nog sy keel kan skoonmaak. Ons het hom ge-olie, kookwater deur die loop gegooi, die loop geborsel tot dit mooi skoon was. Gelukkig is my een vriend ’n swartkruit kenner en het al sy gereedskap byderhand gehad. Toe is dit tyd vir die eerste

skoot, in groot afwagting, kruit is in die loop gegooi, lappie met bal ingesit en met die laaistok vasgestamp. Kruit is in die pan gegooi, die pan is toegemaak en die haan is gespan. Gaan dit werk of nie? Almal staan in afwagting, die selfone reg om foto’s te neem of om die dokter te bel. Ek weet nie. My vriend lê aan en trek die sneller. Dis net rook en ’n hengse knal wat daar uitgekom. Toe wil almal eers ’n kans hê om ’n skoot te skiet. Wat ’n voorreg was dit om met so ’n ou staatmaker te skiet. Die eerste dag het ons niks koedoes geskiet nie. Die aand het ons gebraai en lekker gekuier. Daar was baie goeie kokke in ons geselskap wat lekker kos kon maak. Die volgende dag het ons gaan blesbokke skiet. Ek was gelukkig om drie te kry. Die dag daarna

Johann Strauss het ons weer vir koedoes gaan soek en een geskiet. Ons moes werk vir hom, want daar mag nog net bulle gejag word. Sal nooit weer ’n swaar loop veld toe vat nie. Hy dra darem te swaar. Die laaste dag moes daar toe vleis bewerk word en is daar toe gewerk hoor. Alles mooi in kratte en biltong klaar gesout. Net vir ophang as jy by die huis kom. Ek besef toe wat jag saam met goeie vriende vir ’n mens beteken en hoekom daar so baie planne gemaak word om ’n lekker jag te gaan. Dit is wel duur, maar vir die siel en jou geestestoestand beteken dit so baie dat dit alles die moeite werd is. Daar sal nog baie baklei word om die voorreg om te jag vir almal wat lief is vir die natuur so te hou. Ons as Kaapjag sal alles in ons vermoë doen om die aanslae af te weer, al is dit deur Chasa waar ons geaffilieer is. Al moet ons hof toe gaan. Ek weet ons lede sal ons ondersteun, want hulle koester dieselfde waardes en is lief vir hulle skietgoed en vir die voorreg om te jag. Jaggroete

KAAPJAG VOORSITTER ALGEMENE JAARVERGADERING, INTERTAK GHONGSKIET & CHASA RANGLYS As lede van ’n vereniging soos Kaapjag, wat sy bestaansreg daarin grond dat hy die belange van sy lede beskerm en dien, is daar drie wesenlike gebeure vir die Kaapjaglede waarop hierdie artikel fokus die Algemene Jaarvergadering, die Intertak Ghongskiet en die CHASA Ranglys - in dieselfde volgorde. ALGEMENE JAARVERGADERING (AJV) ie Grondwet van die Kaapse Jagters en Wildbewaringsvereniging bepaal onder die subhoofopskrif BESTUUR VAN DIE VERENIGING by 11.1 hoe die Uitvoerende Bestuur verkies en saamgestel word. In kort bepaal dit dat die persone wat die vereniging moet bestuur, jaarliks tydens ’n Algemene Jaarvergadering verkies word met ’n meerderheidstem van die aanwesiges op die vergadering. Die belangrikheid en die rol van hierdie verkiesing kan nie genoeg onderstreep word nie, omdat dit juis hierdie meganisme is wat verseker dat Kaapjag altyd ’n vereniging bly waar die lede kies wie hulle belange moet dien – daarom kan Kaapjag met trots daarop roem dat ons een van die min jagtersverenigings is wat ’n struktuur onderskryf waar die lede die gang van die vereniging bestuur. Die grootste gevaar vir ’n vereniging is, wanneer sy lede nie die erns en belangrikheid van hierdie meganisme reg gebruik en sorg dat die regte persone in die onderskeie ampte verkies word nie. Die Uitgebreide Bestuur het ’n paar jaar gelede ’n besluit geneem om die AJV eerder ’n lede-naweek te maak. Die geleentheid word afwisselend aan die verskillende takke toegeken sodat almal ’n geleentheid kry om as gasheer op te tree. Met verlede jaar se uitbreek van die pandemie en

die totale inperking, kon die AJV nie op die normale wyse gehou word nie. Die kritiese sake is toe met behulp van die elektroniese media afgehandel, sodat Kaapjag met sy werksaamhede kon voortgaan. Overberg-Tak het vanjaar uiteindelik hulle kans gekry om die AJV aan te bied en almal wat die geleentheid bygewoon het sal getuig dat die span die reëlings met groot kundigheid bestuur het om ’n spoggeleentheid by “The Dunes at Arniston”, aan te bied. Op Vrydag 23 April het die meeste lede wat vêr moes reis vir die geleentheid arriveer en by die konferensiesentrum of nabygeleë akkommodasie oorgebly. Nodeloos om te sê dat daar altyd ’n aantal ekstroverte is wat sulke geleenthede ten volle benut! Op Saterdag 24 April is die Ghongskiet, wat Guns & Bows geborg het, op die plaas Kleiheuwel, van André ChristieSmit, aangebied. Die moeite, koste en tyd wat ingesit is om hierdie Ghongskiet gereed te kry, was baie duidelik sigbaar. Die resultaat was ’n goedgeorganiseerde, aantreklike en uitdagend ghongbaan wat uit vier afdelings met elk vyf ghonge bestaan het. Met die aankoms by die terrein, voor die voltooiing van die skietbaan register, is alle voorgeskrewe COVID riglyne nagekom en daar was koffie en beskuit om die senuwees te lawe. Die hoof Baanoffisier het ’n volledige inligtingsessie gehou waarby hy veiligheidsmaatreëls en die vier

Andre Duvenhage verskillende bane verduidelik het. Almal wat deelgeneem het kon dit ten volle geniet – nie dat alle ghonge altyd raakgeskiet is nie. Aan die einde van die dag is dit Gert Visser van WynlandTak wat met die louere weggestap het. Die ghongskiet was teen omen-by 13:00 afgehandel en almal kon terugbeweeg na “The Dunes” waar die Algemene Jaarvergadering om 14:30 begin het. By dié formele vergadering is die sakelys vir die geleentheid afgehandel en die nuwe Uitvoerende Bestuur verkies. (Die inleidende paragraaf onderstreep die belangrikheid van hierdie verkiesing). Na afhandeling van die sakelys word die vergadering verdaag en die lede kon hulleself gaan regkry vir die dinee wat om 18:30 begin het. Die dinee is baie meer as net ’n geleentheid waar almal lekker saam eet. Dit is ter gelykertyd ‘n geleentheid waarby toekennings aan die lede van Kaapjag wat uitsonderlike prestasies behaal het of uitstaande dienste gelewer het, vereer word met die nodige toekennings. As ek ’n persoonlike keuse moes maak van die twee uitstaande punte van die aand, sou dit eerstens die gasspreker, Jokl le Roux, se praatjie oor die migrasie van die koedoes in die Oos- en WesKaap wees en tweedens die erelidtoekenning wat aan Douw Willemse van Overberg-Tak oorhandig is vir sy jarelange diens as sekretaris van die plaaslike tak en die toewyding wat hy tot Kaapjag het. In geheel was

dit ’n wonderlike geleentheid wat jammerlik net deur sowat 4% van die lede bygewoon is. INTERTAK GHONGSKIET Die Intertakskiet, wat uit ’n CHASA Senterslag Baanskiet bestaan, is al lank deel van die aktiwiteite op die Kaapjag kalender. Die positiewe ervaring van lede wat al die jaarlikse intertakskiet bygewoon het is al ’n geruime tyd onder bespreking en daar is die behoefte geïdentifiseer om ’n tweede soortgelyke byeenkoms te reël. Die ghongskiet by vanjaar se AJV het Kaapjag Bestuur opnuut weer opgeval en nadat opsies oorweeg is, is daar besluit om die tweede soortgelyke geleentheid ’n Intertak Ghongskiet te maak. Kaapjag kan nie skietbyeenkomste reël of aanbied nie, omdat die infrastruktuur hiervoor by takke gesetel is. Takke kry dus geleentheid om die skietbyeenkomste te reël en aan te bied. Kaapjag Bestuur het dus hierdie saak op die Bestuursvergaderings bespreek en nadat die gasheer tak vir 2022 se AJV, Weskus-Tak, geraadpleeg is, het die wens gerealiseer. Dus, met die volgende jaar se AJV in April, sal daar ’n Intertak Ghongskiet gereël word om op dieselfde dag as die AJV plaas te vind. Die onderskeie takke sal dan, net soos met die Intertakskiet gesubsideer word om elkeen ten minste een span te stuur wat hulle by die geleentheid sal verteenwoordig. Dit beteken dus dat daar nou ’n tweede geleentheid aangebied word waar takke met mekaar kan kompeteer om ook ’n Kaapjag Intertak Ghongskiet kampioenspan aan te wys. Weereens sal hierdie kompetisie uitsluitlik vir Kaapjaglede toeganklik wees waar takke uit eie geledere hulle spanne saamstel. Die Intertak Ghongskiet sal dan meebring dat takke ook makliker verteenwoordiging by die AJV kan hê. Die ideaal is dat die AJV

in die toekoms ’n geleentheid vir Kaapjaglede sal wees wat hulle nie graag sal wil misloop nie. Julle kan gerus maar diégene wat reeds ’n AJV bygewoon het vra om hulle ervaringe met julle te deel. CHASA RANGLYS Kaapjag het sowat 346 (9,6%) lede wat as Toegewyde Sportskuts by CHASA geregistreer is. Hierdie lede sal hopelik in die nabye toekoms, wanneer Kaapjag se registrasie vir Sportskiet afgehandel is, in eie reg by Kaapjag vir Sportskiet-status kan registreer. (Kaapjag se aansoek om akkreditasie lê al ’n geruime tyd – sedert November 2020 by die Sentrale Vuurwapenregister vir goedkeuring.) Dit is die lede wat in die verkillende dissiplines skiet belangstel en dit ook as ’n sport beoefen. Elke persoon wat skiet sal weet dat die toerusting (vuurwapens, teleskope, ens.) ’n formidabele finansiële uitleg is en selfs die ammunisie wat geskiet word, nie goedkoop is nie. Die kort en die lank hiervan is dat die lede wat dit doen, iewers ook erkennig wil kry vir die toewyding en deelname. Kaapjag het die afgelope jare nie die kapasiteit in die kantoor gehad om hierdie tellings op die CHASA ranglys te laai nie en RankingU wat hierdie funksie moes verrig kon tot nou toe nog nie die tellings op die CHASA Ranglys laai nie. Tans is die maatskappy, Tech Genius besig om aan hierdie program te werk sodat die tellings in die toekoms automaties na die CHASA Ranglys oorgedra kan word. CHASA het by Mei-maand se raadsvergadering toestemming gegee dat hierdie funksie bygevoeg kan word. Intussen is daar gewerk om slegs die top-presteerders van Kaapjaglede se tellings op die sisteem te kry sodat hulle in aanmerking kan kom vir toekennings wat by die Septembermaand se raadsvergadering gemaak word. Dit is egter belangrik om die

reëls te verstaan hoe die tellings verwerk word om die ranglys te bepaal. • Eerstens. Die CHASA Ranglys neem die beste twee tellings in ’n spesifieke kategorie en kry dan die gemiddelde om die lid se telling vir die ranglys te bepaal. Dit sou bv. beteken dat wanneer ’n bepaalde skut in die CHASA baanskiet, Senterslag Ope slegs een telling van 580,6 (580 sy telling en die 0,6 sy aantal V-bulls wat hy geskiet het) sou deurstuur, hy ten spyte van sy goeie telling nie in aanmerking kan kom nie omdat hy slegs een telling deurgegee het. Dus is dit belangrik dat persone wat in aanmerking wil kom vir die CHASA ranglys moet sorg dat hulle ten minste twee tellings in ’n bepaalde kategorie het om deur te stuur vir die ranglys. Hierdie twee tellings in elke kategorie is krities belangrik vir diégene wat wel poog om hulle posisie op die CHASA ranglys te verbeter. • Tweedens. Die CHASA ranglys word bereken op tellings wat tussen 1 Augustus van ’n betrokke jaar tot 31 Julie van die daaropvolgende jaar gelaai is. Die SSK het twee spanne gekies om Kaapjag by Bloemfontein op 24 September – Vlakteskiet, en 25 September - Multigun Skiet te verteenwoordig, asook om aan ’n CHASA Interprovinsiale kampioenskap te Rustenburg op 22 & 23 Oktober te gaan deelneem. Baie sterkte vir julle deelname en weet dat ons in julle glo! Dit bly vir my ’n voorreg om betrokke te wees in die bestuur van Kaapjag en ek wil graag lede nooi om kontak te maak indien daar enige punte van belang is wat julle graag onder ons aandag wil bring. KAAPJAG AJV 2021 TE BREDASDORP

ALGEMENE JAARVERGADERING (AJV) ie jaarvergadering is op 24 April 2021 aangebied deur Overberg-tak te Bredasdorp, eintlik was die vergadering gehou nader aan Arniston, by The Dunes @ Arniston. Daar was ook ‘n lekker Ghong skietkompetisie op die plaas Klipheuwel gehou waar die manne en dames hulle skietvernuf getoon het. Die verrigting is afgesluit met ‘n dinee waar die bekende Jokl Le Roux as gasspreker opgetree het. Die Sentraaltak is as tak van die jaar aangewys en ook die verskillende wenners se pryse is oorhandig. Die dag is geborg deur Guns and Bows.

MY SHORT HUNTING STORY By: Ismail Kajee

never knew that hunting would become part of my life. I have only been hunting for just over three years now, but I get so excited when I know its time for the next hunt. The week before the hunt the anticipation is just too much. The days drag on and Friday just won’t come. But then it’s time to pack the guns and to head for the open road and it feels like I am driving to freedom. This hunt was to take place in Jansenville in the Eastern Cape. After a long 7 hour journey, with my good friend and hunting buddy Yaseen Hanware, all the way from Cape Town, we arrived at Meerlist Farm. I have hunted here before and you get that home away from home feeling when you’re welcomed with open arms by your hosts. We unpack our stuff and while sitting round the fire start making plans for the next day’s hunt. We wake up before sunrise the next day and the morning air is crisp, cold and fresh. I am ready for the hunt. The plan is to get dropped off and then to start to a walk and stalk in the area the farmer said he has seen Nyala’s the week before. We start walking and it is very dry and rocky terrain. Walking and keeping your footing and trying to spot where the animals are is easier said than done. Suddenly after nearly an hour Henloo, the PH, whispers softly for me to stop. My heart skips a beat. At first I miss the Nyala. He is so well camouflaged. Then I spot the beautiful Nyala bull about 80 meters to my left. He slowly starts moving away from me but comes to a standstill 10 metres further on, this gives me time for a shot. My heart is beating in my throat. I know I need to calm down before attempting the shot. I take a deep breath, open the shooting sticks, cock the rifle and take careful aim. I slowly pull the trigger and the rifle kicks in my shoulder. A perfect heart shot from the .308 with the 180gr Federal Fusion bullet. I keep my eye on the spot the Nyala went down. I have heard to many stories of animals

coming back to life and then you have to trek after them for days. But the shot was true and the hunt is a success. We get the Nyala back to the farm house cold room and decided to

celebrate the hunt with a braai in a dry riverbed. Nothing but good company, relaxing sounds of nature, and the crackle of the fire. Perfect ending to a perfect day.

My Eerste Koedoe

m ‘n koedoe te skiet was nog altyd een van my groot drome, maar nie agter van ‘n bakkie af of vanuit ‘n skerm op ‘n lusernland in die nag nie. Nee, ek wou “walk en stalk”. Ek wou dit ook graag op my eie doen sonder ‘n PH of ‘n spoorsnyer wat vir my sê wat om te maak en wanneer. Nie omdat ek hardegat is nie, maar net omdat ek my vernuf teenoor syne wil toets.

Ek was ook reg daarmee as hy sou wen. Op ‘n manier het ek geweet dit sal nie sommer gebeur nie, want watter jagplaas sal nou ‘n vreemdeling alleen op sy plaas loslaat. Die aanloop van my 2021 jagseisoen begin al vroeg in Februarie met ‘n Facebook advertensie wat ek sien van ‘n baie billike springbokjag in die Middelburg Oos-Kaap omgewing. Ons is reeds ‘n groep van vyf vriende wat besluit het op ‘n jag vir die jaar, maar het nog nie besluit op ‘n plek nie. Ek vra onmiddelik meer inligting aan en teen laat middag is ons jag geboek vir vroeg Mei. Ek het gesien op die lys van wild wat gejag kan word is daar ook Koedoes, maar die plaasbaas lig ons in dat sy plaas nie met wildheining omhein is nie en dat die koedoes dus maar kom en gaan. Tog boek ons vir die groep ook vyf koedoes saam met

die springbokke. Ons reël met die eienaar dat ons soggens elk saam met ‘n plaaswerker te voet gaan kyk vir koedoes en laat soggens tot laat middag gaan springbok skiet. Ek is baie opgewonde. My vrou kan skaars met my huishou en dit is nou maar eers Februarie. Ek begin dadelik bietjie kyk na punte en ladings vir my .270 en besluit op 150gr Sierra GameKings. Saans na werk vat ek my geweer en gaan stap in die koppies agter my huis rond vir oefening (ek is bevoorreg om op n Bolandse plaas te bly met baie koppies en veld). Gou besef ek dat die paar veldskoene wat ek dra dit nie gaan maak in daai OosKaap se berge nie en ek skaf vir my ‘n paar ordentlike stapkoene aan. Saterdae spandeer ek op die skietbaan en oefen om van alle moontlike posisies af te skiet. Saans in my drome sien ek my eerste koedoe jag.

Gelukkig loop die maande vinnig en Mei-maand breek aan. Ons vertrek vroeg die Sondagoggend van Robertson en vat die N1 Hanover toe. Ons kom veilig die Sondagmiddag by ons bestemming aan en begin afpak en maak ons tuis in die pragtige ou plaashuis omring deur geel en oranje populierbome. Om die storie kort te hou gaan ek maar net sê dat die soggens se koedoe jag nie eintlik die Maandag en Dinsdag plaasgevind het nie. Ons het wel teen Dinsdagaand ons getal springbokke gehad. Ons spreek toe af dat ons Woensdag, wat ons laaste jagdag was, gaan probeer vir ‘n koedoe. Die eienaar kon seker sien dat ek nie iemand is wat roekelose skote sal skiet nie en dat ek wel vir hom sal sê indien ek ‘n bok kwes, want net daar begin my droom gestalte kry. Hy stel voor dat omdat hy weet ek nie graag van n bakkie af wil skiet nie ek

DIE BONTEBOK sommer die volgende oggend op my eie van die huis af moet stap al met die droë rivierbedding langs terwyl hy met die ander manne ‘n draai met die bakkie gaan ry. Daai aand sukkel ek om te slaap en verskillende prentjies speel in my kop af. Party goed, ander sleg. Ek is wakker voor my wekker en begin my goed bymekaar kry. Die res van die huis slaap nog toe ek die deur agter my toe trek. Ek is half bewerig opgewonde en en ek stel vir myself ‘n paar reëls op. Geen kopskote, geen skoot verder as 250 meter nie en geen skoot in die hardloop nie behalwe as hy gekwes is. Ek het ook besluit dat dit nie saak maak of dit ‘n koei of ‘n bul is nie, alhoewel ‘n bul eerste prys sal wees. Ek sê ‘n vinnige gebed op en stap met die paaidjie om die huis wat afloop na die rivier toe. Ek stap deur die mooiste Populierbos en voor my gaan die paaidjie deur die droeë rivier. ‘n Beweging vang my oog en ek sak op my hurke neer. Skaars 50m van my af staan ‘n koedoe-koei besig om aan ‘n boom te vreet. Ek bekyk haar deur my teleskoop maar besluit dat dit darem te maklik is. Ek is nog nie eens vyf minute weg van die huis nie. Ek kruip saggies verby sodat sy nou nie almal van my teenwoordigheid sal in kennis stel nie.

Ek bly op die tweespoorpad en gewaar nog ‘n hele paar koeie met kalwers, of sal ek eerder sê hulle gewaar my, want ek hoor net die geblaf en takke wat breek en dan die koppe van die bokke soos hulle weer in die digte rivierloop verdwyn. Net om vir julle die terrein te beskryf, links van my is die oewer van die rivier toegegroei met groot bosse en doringbome. Regs van my is ‘n plat grasvlakte met ‘n berg wat so 500m verder begin. Die son was nog nie uit agter die berg nie, so die hele hang en ‘n gedeelte van die vlakte was nog in skaduwee terwyl die son se strale al die rivierloop bereik het. Ek besef ek sal my strategie moet verander en besluit om van die pad af te kom en eerder tussen die digte bosse van die rivierloop se kant af te beweeg en om gereeld stil te gaan sit en die wêreld voor my met die vêrkyker te bespied. So gesê so gedaan en ek klim deur die draad wat die rivier afspan en loop stadig en saggies van bos tot bos terwyl ek gereeld deur die vêrkyker kyk. Dit is doodstil en ek gewaar geen beweging nie en begin effens spyt voel dat ek nie tog maar die koei in die rivierloop geskiet het nie. Terwyl ek die rivier voor my bespied besluit ek om so bietjie die vlakte en die hang van die berg ook te bekyk. Teen die voet van

die berg sien ek ‘n groot donker lyf staan. Die kop kan ek nie sien nie. Dit is half agter ‘n groot bos. Ek besluit daar en dan dat dit die koedoe gaan wees waaraan ek my aandag nou gaan gee, maak nie saak of dit ‘n koei is nie. Die bok is ongeveer 800m van my af, maar daar is gelukkig baie bosse tussen ons tot waar die grasvlakte begin. Stadig begin ek weer terugstap na die tweespoorpad se kant toe ek klim weer deur die draad en nou is ek in die vlakte met net nog een bos tussen my en die bok. Ek gaan sit agter die laaste bos en “range” die afstand tot by die bok. Dit is 380m. Teen die tyd kon ek darem al sien dat dit ‘n koei is maar die besluit is klaar geneem. Die enigste problem is daar lê 380m se plat veld voor my met net gras en bossies so hoog soos my enkel. Dis nie al nie. 30m voor my is ‘n trop tarentale besig om te wei en mekaar rond te jaag en regs van my is ‘n troppie skape wat al klaar agterdogtig is. Wel ek het gesê dat ek my vernuf wil toets en hier is die toets. Ek loer gou vining op my horlosie. Dit is 6:50 vm. Die koedoe is baie rustig. Ek besluit dat bekruip die enigste opsie is. Met my geweer se tweepoot uitgevou sit ek die geweer so armlengte voor my neer en kruip dan self weer nader. Af en toe moet ek plat op my maag gaan lê as die tarentale te naby kom. Op een stadium was die tarentale so naby aan my dat ek die voorstes

Die rooi pyl is die laaste bos waaragter ek kon skuil en die blou sirkel is waar die koedoes op daai stadium was met klein klippies gegooi het om hulle net van rigting te laat verander. Ek vorder maar stadig en fokus nie heeltyd op die bok nie. Toe ek weer ‘n slag opkyk is die bok weg. Terwyl ek op my maag lê neem ek die vêrkyker om die bok te soek. Na ‘n paar sekondes kom stap ‘n koei agter die bos uit gevolg deur nog een en begin aan die bos langsaan vreet. Die afstand is nou ateeds 340m, so nog steeds te vêr om te skiet. Ek lê nog so en die twee koeie en bekyk toe daar skielik van agter dieselfde bos waaraan die koeie vreet ‘n bul uitstap. My hart het vir ‘n paar sekondes gaan stilstaan en ek kon nie glo wat ek sien nie. Terwyl ek nog so lê begin die twee koeie wegstap van die bul af in die rigting van die rivier. Hulle kom nou so half skuins in my rigting gestap. Die bul is egter besig om hoër teen die voet van die berg op te wei. Ek dink die tarentale se gefladder moes die koeie se aandag getrek het want hulle gaan staan plank dwars doodstil in die middel van die vlakte. Die afstand 250m. Ek besluit ek gaan my geluk met die bul probeer. As hy wegkom sal ek daarmee tevrede moet wees. Die twee koeie staan vir omtrent tien

minute net so doodstil en ek kan nie roer nie want hulle kyk reg in my rigting. Uiteindelik begin hulle weer aanstap na die rivier en verdwyn tussen die bosse. Die bul het intussen nou al oor die draad wat die berg afkamp gepring en staan nou met sy boude na my toe in ‘n klein klofie. Dit is die kans waarvoor ek gewag het. Ek staan stadig op en stap gebukkend maar vinnig na die voet van die berg. Die tarentale se verbassing was groot toe ek opstaan en hulle vlieg met ‘n groot lawaai op net om ‘n paar meter verder weer te gaan sit. My plan is om so gou as moontlik teen die berg op te kom om te kyk of ek nie bo die bul kan kom nie. Waar ek die berg begin uitstap kan nie ek of hy mekaar sien nie en daar is gelukkig ook geen wind nie. Ek stap vinnig teen die berg op tot bo-op ‘n rotswand. Aan die bokant van die rotswand is ‘n wildspaaidjie. Ek volg die paadjie in die rigting van die klofie waar ek die bul laas gesien het. Ek is nou bo die klofie en gaan sit met my rug teen ‘n rots en bespied die kloof met die vêrkyker. Dit is doodstil en ek sien geen beweging nie. In die verte sien ek die bakkie op die grondpad wat nou seker die ander manne gaan optel vir

hulle jag. Ek vertoef ‘n lang tyd daar maar besef dat hy alreeds uit die kloof is en dalk ook al om die punt van die berg is om seker aan die agterkant van die berg vir die dag te gaan skuil. Die tyd is nou 8:45. Ek stap verder met die wildspaaidjie terwyl ‘n brandwag bobbejaan my van bo af koggel. Die punt van die berg maak ‘n plato so halfpad op teen die berg. As jy daar staan kan jy die oostelike en westelike hange van die berg sien. Die oostelike hang veskil heeltemal van die westelike hang. Hier is groot rotse met bosse en erosie slote. Toe ek om die punt van die berg kom is daar ‘n ligte windjie wat in my gesig waai en dit gee my toe weer ‘n bietjie hoop. Ek skrik my boeglam toe ‘n rooiribbokram skaars 50m van my af fluit en saam met sy drie ooitjies teen die berg op hardloop. Terwyl ek hulle deur die vêrkyker bekyk dink ek by by myself as die bul nou nog nie van my geweet het nie dan weet hy nou. Ek besluit om nog een keer met die vêrkyker die veld onder my deur te kyk en dan maar die aftog te blaas en weer met die rivier langs terug te stap huis toe. Miskien kry ek weer ‘n kans daar. ‘n Weerkaatsing in ‘n bos laat my weer terugdraai, maar ek sien niks. Tog hou ek die vêrkyker ‘n paar sekondes langer gefokus op die bos en waaragtig daar stap die bul agter die bos uit. Vir ‘n tweede keer die dag gaan staan my hart vir ‘n paar sekondes. Net so vinnig as wat ek hom gesien het verdwyn hy weer in ‘n erosiesloot. Dit gee my gou tyd om my tweepoot oop te maak en om selfs ‘n bietjie nader te kan kom. Ek beweeg saggies en gebruik die bosse en rotse as skuiling en beweeg net as hy my nie kan sien nie of as hy weg beweeg van my. Die bul is duidelik op pad iewers heen want hy gaan staan nie stil nie, hy bly aan beweeg weg van my af, maar hy is tog ook nie bewus van my nie. Hy is oppad na die draad toe wat die berg afspan.

DIE BONTEBOK Anderkant die draad is ‘n vlakte wat eindig in n digte kloof waarin hy seker vir die dag wil skuil. Hy gaan staan met sy bors voor die draad reg om te spring. In die proses wat ek probeer bybly het moes hy my gehoor het, want net voor hy spring draai hy effens skuins en kyk terug in my ringting. Vandaar af het dinge vinnig begin gebeur. Ek val plat in ‘n ongemaklike sitposisie. Gelukkig was my tweepoot se bene op hul langste uitgetrek en ek lê aan. Tyd vir “range” was daar nie maar ek het geweet dis nader as 250m en my geweer was gezero op 200m. Die kruishaar is op die blad van die bok toe ek die sneller trek. Toe die skoot klap spring die bok bo-oor die draad, maar ek kon die soliede impak van die skoot hoor. Die bul hardloop agter ‘n bos in en ek haal weer oor, reg om te skiet as hy agter die bos uithardloop, maar niks gebeur nie. Net toe ek regmaak om op te staan, stap die bul om die bos. Ek kon sien hy is swaar gewond maar ek wou nie onnodig ‘n kans waag nie. Die bul staan nou met sy

kop na my toe ek ek mik net links van sy borsbeen. Die skoot klap en hy spring met ‘n 180 grade draai in die lug maar toe sy bene grond vat is daar nie meer krag nie en hy sak net daar inmekaar met sy bene onder hom. Weer haal ek oor en hou die kruishaar vir nog ‘n paar sekondes op hom, maar daar is geen teken van lewe nie. Ek staan op en stap vinnig na waar die bul geval het ek klim ook deur die draad waaroor hy gespring het. Ek sit weer ‘n patroon in die loop en stap stadig nader, gereed om te skiet indien hy sou opspring, maar sy oë is reeds vaal toe ek by kom. Die adrenalien begin plek maak vir opgewondenheid en ek moet bieg ek het ‘n gil van geluk en sukses gegee. Ek neem n tydjie om net langs die dier te gaan sit met my hand op sy lyf en is in daai oomblik baie bewus van die voorreg wat ek nou so pas beleef het. Ek kyk weer op my horlosie. Dit is nou 9:55 vm. Nou begin ek kyk na waar my skote getref het. Die eerste skoot het hom op sy linker blad getref en die regterblad

gebreek, maar nie ‘n uitgangswond gemaak nie. My tweede skoot het toe net links van die borsbeen getref. Wat ek nie geweet het nie is dat hy op daai stadium met sy agterlyf in n sloot gestaan het. Dus is die tweede skoot deur sy bors en so 10 cm onder sy rugstring aan die linkersy uit, maar het net ‘n klein gaatjie gemaak. Die son is redelik warm en ek weet nie hoe lank dit gaan wees voor ons die bok sal kan oplaai nie. Ek besluit om hom in die skaduwe van ‘n bos agter my in te sleep. Terwyl ek die bok dieper onder die bos probeer inkry vang my oog iets op die grond lê. Sowaar, dit is die koeël wat deur die bors en onder die rugstring uit is. Slegs die binneste lood is uit. Ek trek my baaidjie uit en gooi dit oor die bos as ‘n merk en kry vir my nog ‘n paar vaste landmerke sodat ons die bok maklik weer kan kry. Ek begin terugstap huistoe, baie opgewonde dat ek op ‘n ouderdom van 42 nog een van my drome kon verwesenlik op die presiese manier hoe ek dit altyd vir my voorgestel het. En ja ek weet dis nie die grootste bul met die langste horings nie, maar dis my eerste koedoe.

KAAPJAG SE BAAKENSRUG JAG 2021

ns was weereens bevoorreg om die naweek van 9 Julie die tweede Kaapjag Springbok voorsitjag by Baakensrug te kon meemaak. Roland, Lizelle & hul span het soos gewoonlik uit hul pad gegaan om almal welkom en tuis te laat voel. Die nuwe lodge wat staan gemaak is in die plek van die een wat verlede jaar in die brand verwoes is, is ongelooflik mooi met elke kamer wat sy eie ensuite badkamer het. Onwillekeurig het jou gedagtes gedwaal na hoe die lodge voorheen gelyk het… Ons was altesaam 12 Kaapjag lede wat in totaal 53 Springbokke geskiet het. Twee nuwe lede is ook verwelkom, naamlik Francois Viljoen & Linnihan Hanekom. Alhoewel Francois al voorheen ‘n bok geskiet het, was dit Linnihan se eerste bok en het Roland die “inlywing” op ‘n baie spesiale en “keurige” manier hanteer. Ons het soggens met die uitgaan veld toe goed kennis gemaak met ware Karoo-koue, waarna die dag in die veld mooi uitgedraai het. Lizelle se warm sop en vars vetkoeke met die terugkeer was soos manna uit die hemel. after 40 years of being a hunting widow every winter, enough was enough and the time was ripe s any hunter knows, that first hunt is an experience that she too should join the ranks of the hunter. There and then that will never be they decided to make this their forgotten. For Ludy Starke, that first hunt took place many many 40 x 40 hunt. The hunt was arranged at Klipfontein hunting lodge which is located a little north west of Hanover. By chance this special hunt would take place less than 60 km as the crow flies from the farm where Ludy so many years before took that first step into hunting. With Covid throwing our lives into turmoil, the hunt was on, then off then on again and eventually a gap in the ever changing regulations allowing hunting, the family

took advantage and at short notice set off for the open reaches of the great Karoo. (Regulations shut down hunting again the day after they left but by then they were on the farm and out of touch with the mixed up world). The hunting on Klipfontein is conducted in the traditional Karoo voorsit manner. The farmer really knows his stuff and positions the hunters out so well that there is no need to have the animals driven at all. The disturbance made by a hunter shooting naturally pushed the herds towards the next hunter and the layout of the farm does not allow the buck to hide away and stall the hunting. There is enough distance between the hunters that the buck are not stressed. It is more a case of them feeding in and out of the positions where the hunter is sitting and waiting.

the rifle but lay in the fact that on these sparsely vegetated plains, a springbok stands out as the largest feature and as such one’s brain is tricked into thinking that the buck is standing much closer than it actually was. As the sun was slowly sinking towards the western horizon once Ludy had recovered and gutted his buck, they decided to call it a day and go enjoy the luxury of the lodge a bit. Klipfontein traditionally caters for overseas hunters and as such is a five star lodge. It is beautifully built in a horse shoe shape with rooms around

Ludy and Petri would be hunting together and were dropped off at one of the only reasonably sized bushes on an otherwise open plane. The eastern sun had only just begun to cast a shadow from the bush and was still too weak to chase away the Karoo cold when the first herd of springbok came trotting past. Not expecting to see the buck this early caught them off guard and the eagle eyed springbok caught the movement of the couple as they tried to get into position for a shot and decided that there were safer areas on the farm and departed hastily towards the east. An hour later while enjoying a cup of hot coffee from the Stanley flask that had been prepared that morning, a herd meandered onto the plain in front of them. This time, Petri was determined to do everything right. Petri slowly lowered her coffee to the ground and inched the stock of her rifle up to her shoulder. Ludy ranged

the dominant ram of the herd at 214 meters and whispered the distance to Petri. The previous day, Petri was calm and was able to shoot without stress at all, but today, possibly because the pressure was increased a bit with all the other hunters having bagged their buck, things were very different. With the adrenaline coursing through her veins, Petri slipped the safety off the rifle, the little click it made as it went into the fire position sounded like a gunshot in the still morning to her ears, but of course the buck 200 metres away did not hear a thing. The years of high end competition had prepared Petri for the adrenaline and pressure of competition and she thought that hunting would be the same, but this was a whole new ball game. Buck fever had her heart pounding

against her chest wall. She took a few deep breaths, focused on the task at hand and once she was happy that the crosshairs has stopped their maniacal dance and settled on the shoulder of the ram, she broke the shot. Those few seconds between squeezing the trigger and seeing the buck fall can seem like a lifetime. The build-up of adrenaline and stress is suddenly gone and emotions run high. It is always a sad moment when a hunter sees the dead animal and the full implications of ones actions falls on one. Ludy had the good sense to leave Petri alone for a while to process all of this and then once she looked up still with tears running down her cheeck, gave her a hug and welcomed her into the fraternity of the hunter. As all hunters know, once

the buck is down the work begins. Petri insisted on gutting her buck and cutting off the scrotum to prevent the meat from becoming tainted. Ludy, in the tradition of South African hunters anointed Petri with the fresh blood of the Springbok, while some don’t agree with this practice, to me it is a sign of respect to the buck and a right of passage for the new hunter. The rest of the trip was spent in the veld enjoying the nature and relaxedly hunting of a few more springbok. The family also hunted successfully and it is worth mentioning that not only did Petri shoot her first buck but her daughter inlaw also was welcomed into the realms of the huntress. The peace of the Karoo creeps into your soul and it is always difficult when the hunt is over, but as with all good things, eventually they must end and the couple bid farewell to the rest of the hunting team and embarked on the long trip back to the Cape. What an experience. 40 years waiting to hunt, a successful hunt in the year of your 40th wedding anniversary. Who could ask for more. While not their 40th year on earth, it is definitely a case of life begins at 40. We are thankful for the privilege of being able to hunt in this great country.

CONTINENTAL DRIFT AND ITS EFFECT ON THE EVOLUTION OF SPECIES together depending on which way the plates on which they are attached are moving. The continents have all been one big landmass at least twice in the history of the earth. These supercontinents were called Rodinia and Pangaea. Rodinia was the first super-continent that formed about 1.3 billion years ago and started breaking up about 900 million years ago.

Scientists concur that the earth is about 4.6 billion years old. There is also no doubt that for long periods of time, the earth has undergone some drastic changes. Over millions of years various forms of life on earth has had to adapt to ever changing environmental conditions in order to survive. These physical changes to our planet are without doubt strong drivers of evolution as the species that live on our planet in that particular period of time have to adapt to change as the planet itself changes. These changes can come from internal or external sources and are part of ongoing natural processes. Continental Drift The ground that we stand and live on every day may feel stationary and solid, but in reality, it is not the case. The continents on earth are divided up into large “plates” that move and float on the liquid-like rock that makes up the mantle of the earth. These plates are like rafts that move as the convection currents in the mantle move below them and are called tectonic plates. The actual movement of these plates can now be measured quite accurately by sensitive instruments on geostationary satellites. Some plates move faster than others, but all are moving, although at a slow rate of only a few centimetres, on average, per year. The continual movement of these tectonic plates leads to what scientists refer to as “continental drift”. Continents move apart and come back

Eventually, the continents of the earth will come back together again at some point in the future to create a new supercontinent which is currently dubbed “Pangaea Ultima”. How does continental drift affect evolution? As continents broke apart from Pangaea and later Gondwana, species got separated by seas and oceans and speciation occurred as result of isolation and changing environmental conditions. Individuals of species that were once able to interbreed were reproductively isolated from one another and over time acquired adaptations that made them genetically incompatible. New species evolved as a result of the isolation of continents and islands as dealt with in previous articles. As the continents drifted, they gradually moved into new climate zones. For example, a continent that was once at the equator may later be near the poles. Species that were unable to adapt to these changes in the weather and temperature, simply did not survive and went extinct. Species able to adapt and survive under such changed environmental conditions, often thrived in new areas.

However, thanks to the earth’s thick atmosphere, extremely large pieces of these extra-terrestrial chunks of rock usually do not make it to the earth’s surface to cause damage. However, earth did not always have an atmosphere for the rock to burn up in before making it to the earth.

Space debris Much like volcanoes, meteorite impacts can severely alter the climate and cause significant changes in earth’s species — including mass extinctions. In fact, a very large meteor impact near the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is thought to be the cause of the mass extinction that wiped out the land dinosaurs at the end of the Mesozoicera 65 million years ago. These impacts can also release ash and dust into the atmosphere and can cause large changes in the amount of sunlight that reaches the earth. Not only does such events affect

Atmospheric changes To date, earth is the only planet in our Solar System with known life. There are many reasons for this such as we are the only planet with liquid water and the only one with large amounts of oxygen in the atmosphere. Our atmosphere has undergone many changes since the earth was formed. The most significant change came during what is known as the oxygen revolution. As life began to form on earth, there was little to no oxygen in the atmosphere. As photo synthesizing organisms became the norm, their waste oxygen lingered in the atmosphere. Eventually, organisms that used oxygen evolved and thrived, but it caused mass extinctions of anaerobic organisms that dominated aquatic life at that stage – about 2,5 billion years ago. Human-induced climate change The current addition of many greenhouse gases resulting from the burning of fossil fuels are also starting to show some effects on the evolution of species on earth. The rate at which the global temperature is increasing on a yearly basis may not seem alarming, but it is causing the ice caps to melt and sea levels to rise just as they did during periods of mass extinction in the past. As a result of these significant and substantial increases in extreme climatic events world-wide, we are already seeing alarming declines in several plant and animal species. Extinctions have always been part of life on earth, but the rate at which we are currently losing species is largely human-induced and an enormous cause for concern. References 1. p Saterdag 8 Mei 2021 het Boesmanland Jag die geleentheid gehad om ‘n CHASA Vlakteskiet aan te bied. Die skiet het plaasgevind teen die hange van Rebunie berg agter Ramskop skietbaan, wat vir ‘n paar asemrowende uitsigte gesorg het. ‘n Totaal van 35 skuts het die dag aangedurf - ‘n ligte herfs briesie en ‘n verskeidenheid interessante en snaakse skiet-posisies (lê teen ‘n skuins wal en ‘n melkkrat om oor te skiet), het dit vir die skuts moeilik gemaak om nes te skrop. Ten spyte van die uitdagings was die kompetisie straf, maar is die dag geneem deur Andries Theart, met Evan Lategan in tweede en Louwtjie Hanekom in derde plek. Na afloop van die geweer skiet het die skuts mekaar aangevat met ‘n praktiese pistool uitdaging en “steel challenge”. Weens die COVID-19 inperkings was skiet getalle maar min, maar tog was daar die getroue en toegewyde skuts wat ons deurentyd ondersteun het deur hierdie tydperk.

p Saterdag 07 Augustus 2021 het Boesmanland Jag die geleentheid gehad om ‘n nuwe CHASA .22 Vlakteskiet aan te bied, volgens President Johann Strauss se nuut-geskrewe formaat. Die skiet het ook teen die hange van Rebunie berg plaasgevind. ‘n Totaal van 21 skuts het die dag

aangedurf. Die kondisies was onverbeterlik vir ‘n .22 skiet – wind-stil en helder-blou lug. Die kompetisie het bestaan uit 6 bane, wat verdeel was in 2 gong bane en 4 papier teiken bane. Die papierteikens was ‘n klein-koppie tarentaal, gans, ystervark en ‘n “Roland Ward” dassie wat mooi tussen die rotshange vir die skuts gepronk het. Die skuts het meegeding vir ‘n potensiële groottotaal van 900, en die deelnemers het behoorlik hul staal gewys. Die dag was gewen deur Izak Hanekom met ‘n

allemintige 885.6, terwyl tweede plek aan Andries Theart en derde plek aan Johann Strauss behoort het. Die COVID-19 inperkings het skiet getalle min gehou, tog was daar die getroue skuts wat ons ondersteun het deur hierdie tydperk. Boesmanland is ook dankbaar vir die afgelope reënseisoen wat gesorg het dat ons skietbaan in ‘n lowergroen vlakte verander het. Hierdie sal verseker sorg dat ons opkomende Veldblom Skiet sy naam gestand sal doen.

Teams from Kaapjag take part in these competitions in most of the disciplines. The teams consist of juniors, ladies, men and seniors. A new ranking and scoring system has been implemented, which will enable you to see your score and ranking in Kaapjag. Old scores will also be available. The Kaapjag team members for the first two competitions this year is: Greg Sykes, Wesley White, Ludy Starke and Andries Theart. Unfortunately Andries had family commitments and will not be able to take part. Jacques Buckle will take his place. The team was picked taking into consideration 3 disciplines, centre fire and rim fire rifles, handgun and shotgun. Next season there will hopefully be more scores to choose from and more teams to represent Kaapjag. We wish the teams good shooting in Bloemfontein and Rustenburg.

he decision to start shooting competitively carries with it many questions and self doubt . “Have I got what it takes, is my equipment up to the task and will the results be so bad that I will feel embarrassed?” These are all very normal feelings I assure you and just something that will later become the norm as far as pre-competition nerves go. All good competitors have a little competition nerves which serve to unlock the adrenalin charge when you need to think, move and shoot quickly and accurately. There is a moment when time stands still, vision and hearing become acute, and you shoot a perfect stage and sometimes, very rarely, a perfect match. We have all been in that magical place and I suppose that is part of why we love our sport. I have been involved in other types of sport on club, provincial and national level and the drive to achieve perfection is part to all competitors. In every sportsman or sportswoman there is the desire to do better and one day to stand on the podium with a feeling that they have done well. I have won matches which I felt were undeserved. I have lost matches where I shot brilliantly, but that feeling and memory of a well shot competition has stayed with me.

A competition can be broken down into pre-match planning, equipment readiness and the mental preparation for the match. Pre-match planning : Pre-match planning starts more or less one week before competition time. First on the agenda is weather watch. Temperature affects clothing, liquid intake and of course loading of ammunition. While the Over all length(OAL) on your rounds once established does not change, the powder charge should be adjusted. I have a winter load and a summer load depending on temperatures. Study your shoot booklet and memorise the course of fire so when you step up to the shooting line, the course of fire is a familiar one. The five minute walk-through is just confirmation of what you already know and checking if there are any significant changes from the published course of fire. See if there are difficult starting positions. If possible emulate and practice this beforehand at home. Footwear is very important. On rocky and uneven terrain, use footwear that supports the ankle. Make and use a checklist for equipment. I have seen people come to competitions without a gun, ammunition or a competition rig. Stage information is supplied. Use this to do your planning.

HANDGUN & MULTIDISCIPLINE SHOOTING Equipment Readiness: Make sure that all equipment functions faultlessly. Clean, lubricate, check and check again. There are no excuses for stoppages of a weapon except for structural failures like broken extractors, barrel links etc. If there is any doubt, take your weapon to a gunsmith and let him repair it. It is not fair to other competitors to try and sort your problems out in their competition time. This cleaning and maintenance includes all of the equipment you use, from holsters with locking devices, to electronic ear protection and electrical optical sights. Each and every piece of equipment must be checked and be in perfect working order. This is done before every competition. Make sure that the ammunition you use is of the highest standard and makes the required power factor for the division you are competing in.

Reliable equipment is a must if you hope to achieve your full potential as a sport shooter. Mental preparation for a match: Your preparation for the match needs to be very thorough, so that your mind only has to concentrate on one thing - to shoot a good competition. To do this, you need to plan, practice and shoot the match in your head. Your mind cannot tell the difference between actually shooting a match and visualising doing it. By visualising, you can practice the competition and this will lower stress levels and make the stages a familiar place and less formidable. It will simplify your stage planning and make you enjoy even the most nerve wrecking competitions. You need to approach every competition with no expectations. Simply go and shoot as well as you can.

Pressure is something you create yourself. Do you need to feel stress regarding competitions? A certain amount of nerves is necessary, but too much could be detrimental to your functioning in competitive situations. The remedy is this old saying, “slow is smooth and smooth is fast”. It is ideal to reach a point where time does not rule your actions and you are not hurried by the thought of it. You need to break down the shooting actions required to finish a stage and execute each action properly before moving on to the next task. There is nothing more corrosive to confidence than having to return to a missed target because of chasing time. Forget about time and do each task properly before moving on. Go about your business smoothly and calmly and you will improve with each competition.

Handgun Competition Top Tips - Magazines • • •

Never underestimate the importance of the magazines in the function of your firearm. Magazine malfunction is responsible for a lot stoppages in semi-auto pistols. Make sure your springs are not worn. They should apply firm pressure even on the first round in the magazine. Test them by manually stripping out the rounds, they must pop out smoothly. Slightly bend the top coils of the spring to allow more pressure on the front end of the follower, this should help avoid the rounds nose-diving. Polish the lips of the magazine, so that it does not scrape the bullet case as it feeds out, and scratch your thumb as you load your ammo. Make sure your magazine followers do not have

sharp corners or plastic burns. Number your magazines so you will know if there is one causing problems, and to know which one to clean after dropping it. You need to recognize you individual magazines. Keep you magazines clean. If the rounds are not feeding up as well as you would like, consider using a Silicon or similar spray in your magazine tubes. Test to see if you can use a “prone magazine”. Keep in mind that you will be applying pressure on the base of the magazine when you rest it on the ground. This sometimes causes feeding problems and you do not want to find you have this magazine problem in the middle of a competition.

t is difficult to believe that we’ll be heading into September in a mere few weeks. In the hunting calendar we know that this means the hunting season has passed. I hope that it was a better season than the last year, even though lockdown on various levels continues to be at the order of the day. Preceding the hunting season, Kaapjag had a .22 baanskiet on 1 May in Atlantis. This was shortly followed by a vlakteskiet, also in Atlantis, on 22 May. Our planned Inter-branch shoot on 3 July was unfortunately postponed due to lockdown regulations and elevated Covid19 infections. This shoot has yet to take place. A .22 baanskiet is scheduled for 21 August at Durbanville Shooting Club where I look forward to seeing many of you. In going forward, please set aside 18 September for a day of shooting at the Durbanville Shooting Club. This promises to be an exciting shoot. More information will be provided in due course. et die Augustus uitgawe van Bontebok in gedagte, kan ons terugvoering gee dat die algemene jaarvergadering gehou is op Moorreesburg op 16 Maart en 28 lede tesame met die bestuur het die vergadering bygewoon. Matt Relihan en Andre Duvenhage het die lede ingelig oor Kaapjag aangeleenthede asook ander sake wat van belang is vir Kaapjag lede. Ons wil dan ook van hierdie geleentheid gebruik maak om die bestuur en hul gesinne aan ons lesers bekend te stel. Soos ons almal weet, het Covid - 19 ‘n duidelike negatiewe invloed gehad op ons verenigings se bedrywighede en so ook veroorsaak dat 15 Mei se groeperings en 17 Julie se .22 skiete afgstel /uitgestel moes word. Die handwapen skiet van 19 Junie het ook deurgeloop en was slegs deur 4 skuts verteenwoordig. Ons vertrou dat die volgende aktiwiteite wel aangebied en goed verteenwoordig sal word: 21 Augustus – 3 skoot groepering 18 September – Standaard Chasa baanskiet 16 Oktober – Chasa.22 standaard posskiet 20 November – Chasa big bore en .303 skiet 11 Desember – Chasa vlakteskiet op Remhoogte

Die gereelde inbrake by die klubhuis langs die N7 en die versekering se versoek vir opgradering ten opsigte van veiligheid het die bestuur genoodsaak om diefwering aan te bring wat binne die begroting opgerig is. Ons vertrou dat die inhoud van die gebou hierdeur ten volle beskerm sal wees teen inbrake en diefstal. Op ‘ n veel ligter noot het ons sowat ‘n maand gelede ‘n nuwe intrekker by die klubhuis gekry. ‘n Pragtige mak, liefdevolle katjie is vermoedelik deur haar vorige

eienaar daar naby afgelaai. Na so ‘n week se kos en omgee het een van ons lede wat kom skiet het die katjie saamgeneem en sy word nou bederf deur ‘n sesjarige dogterjie in Stellenbosch. Dink ons het darem hier bygedra tot die bewaringsdeel van die vereniging. Ons sien uit daarna om almal op die baan te verwelkom en hopelik alle aktiwiteite tot einde 2021 te kan aanbied met goeie bywoning. Vriendelike groete Kobus van Niekerk en Bestuur

ns meeste skietdae het weereens hierdie jaar in die slag gebly weens weersomstandighede of die inperkingsmaatreëls. Van ons lede was gelukkig om gedurende die jagseisoen wel die kans te kon benut om wild vir die pot te kon gaan skiet wat ongelukkig nie verlede jaar moontlik was met die Covid pandemie nie, dus was die ongelukkigheid nie te erg omdat geen kompetisies kon plaasvind nie.
