PRESIDENT’S report / 2020

A

s for many organizations, the year 2020 for the Academy was really two years. First, the period of time from the very successful 2019 Gala through the early planning for 2020. And then in March, as all this careful planning came unstuck, a period of improvising, with largely excellent results, through the rest of 2020. Our News and Kids Emmy® ceremonies were conducted online. Our Gala/Ceremony in November was online too. It had a strong in-person component and reached many thousands of people more than our usual awards Gala. The finances of the Academy stayed relatively strong through the year, despite the loss of the usual Gala revenue. Our membership stayed steady, and although we lost some members for financial reasons, the growth from new members offset that. An impromptu initiative at the June Board Meeting to ask each member present to nominate a new member by the next Board Meeting was highly successful, and will now become a regular feature of our recruitment. Early in the pandemic the Academy received a grant from the US government’s payroll protection program and that money was particularly instrumental in enabling us to keep on the whole staff. No one was fired or furloughed, and through the year our small staff did a remarkable job of keeping things going. I am in awe of Camille Bidermann Roizen, our executive director, and her talented colleagues for following the road so effectively when there was no road map.

4

INTERNATIONAL EMMY® MAGAZINE 2020 / 2021

PRESIDENT & CEO BRUCE PAISNER

We had other pandemic inspired innovations through the year, particularly a series of virtual M+ meetings, inspired by our M+ lounges at major industry events. These sessions enabled our members to meet and compare notes with each other and listen to a speaker on a topic of general

interest. It became increasingly clear as the year went on that all of the dramatic innovations in our business, from an explosion of streaming services to extensive rounds of executive changes, made the Academy’s ability to convene and guide industry players more vital than ever. The high point of the year was our major awards ceremony on November 23rd, where we literally hooked up the entire world to announce and award Emmys in 11 different categories. The ceremony was a triumph of both logistics and imagination. All of our 44 nominees in 20 countries were connected to us, and all introductions and acceptance speeches were presented flawlessly in real time. The entire operation was run from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York under strict COVID-19 protocols. A highlight of this ceremony was the presentation of the Founders Emmy to Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York for his imaginative use of television to explain what was going on in the early days of the pandemic and to calm people down. The Academy garnered significant publicity around the world for the award, for a group of New York based celebrity presenters, and for Governor Cuomo’s acceptance speech. Despite the difficulties of Zoom-based communication, our committees operated flawlessly through the year. And I am especially grateful to the Executive Committee for its unflappable guidance through very difficult and uncertain waters. My thanks to Fred Cohen, our Chairman, Kevin Beggs, our Treasurer, Bruce Tuchman, our Secretary, and to Piv Bernth, Adriana Cisneros, Armando Nunez, Jr, Abbe Raven and Rainer Siek. 2021 is shaping up as another hybrid year, with much uncertainty about the first half and some confidence about the second. In June 2020, we had an Academy Day scheduled for Istanbul with Ay Yapim as our host, but it, of course, had to be postponed. As did our Fall 2020 Board Meeting in Berlin under the auspices of ZDF. At this writing we hope the Berlin meeting can go forward

in early October 2021 and we are still working on the rescheduling of Academy Day in Istanbul. I particularly want to thank our major sponsors who have stuck with us through a year that was as challenging for them as it was for us. We are particularly grateful to Phoenix Satellite Television from China and its chairman Liu Changle; Globo, the leading media company in Brazil, and the Marinho family; and Ay Yapim, from Turkey, and its chairman Kerem Catay. I deeply appreciate all they do for the Academy. Finally I would like to say a word about my longtime professional home, the Hearst Corporation. Although, like most other Hearst employees, I did not spend much time in Hearst Tower in 2020, I and the Academy continue to receive the kind of support that only a corporation deeply committed to public service would provide. I particularly want to thank Steven R. Swartz, Hearst’s President and CEO for his interest and enthusiasm. Steve is a great leader and a talented executive who somehow finds time to serve as chairman of the Associated Press and on several boards, in addition to his Hearst duties. Steve took over the job of Chief Executive of Hearst from Frank A. Bennack, Jr. now Hearst’s Executive Vice-Chairman, who has been a constant source of support and inspiration. I will end, unusually, on a political note. The Academy is a nonpolitical organization which simply seeks to celebrate and reward excellence in television around the world, and to bring together in innovative and lasting ways people who make television happen. These last 4 years, with the world at a renewed level of squabbling and the United States pursuing a policy of America Alone, has not been an easy time for such an organization. But we have come through, and I already sense the interdependent spirit of our industry and particularly of our members beginning to return. Echoing the mayor of Paris, I would simply say “Welcome back, America”.

“All of the dramatic innovations in

our business made the Academy’s ability to convene and guide industry players more vital than ever”

Brazil’s National Ballet was fighting for its survival. The State of Rio was bankrupt, and dancers were no longer paid. Artists joined the resistance, declaring when there is no more bread and no more culture, there would be chaos. Our art is our weapon and we’re going to use it.

Q

Where are you keeping your Emmy®?

One Emmy® will be in our Babel Doc office reminding us of the amazing recognition that Vertige de la Chute (Ressaca) has had worldwide . The two other statues will be in Brazil. The award will also honor Vincent Rimbaux and Patrizia Lanzi who so brilliantly directed and steered this film, as well as the artists and members of the Teatro Municipal de Rio de Janeiro. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

We felt it was our reward for being courageous and daring because, in spite of countless difficulties we had

faith in this film. We started shooting on a small budget, with no idea how or when the film would end. This Emmy® encourages us to continue to be demanding, ambitious and creative and above all, to believe in our dreams. I think it will also encourage France Televisions to co-produce original independent, author-driven and feature length documentaries because it shows these can have international and popular success. Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? We have launched in Brazil the shooting of Prado (in coproduction with France Television again), a film about the fate of a child jockey in the Nordeste, an extremely poor region of Brazil.

Q A With Billy Barratt

Q

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?

I think I have to build it its own special shelf in our living room, maybe on the wall right above the TV so everyone can see it every time they watch!

I didn’t expect to win anything, I honestly just wanted people to think I had done a believable job and to see the situation from Ray’s perspective, which as a 12 year-old, was pretty scary and desperate. Hopefully it will also show people that younger actors can handle challenging roles.

Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next?

I never thought about winning any awards when I was filming the role of Ray. My whole goal was to focus on the performance, to keep it raw and honest and do the character justice as it’s based on a true story. I kept reminding myself that this was someone’s life I was portraying.

I am working on an awesome series for Apple TV called Invasion. I play Caspar. It’s a very different story line from Responsible Child and I have had such a great time filming it. That’s all I can say for now though I am afraid... but it will be worth the wait!

It will be an honor to display our first Emmy® award in this room to inspire us in the years ahead and with our upcoming projects. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

Nobody’s Looking was created by a new generation of writers, directors and Brazilian talents.

Winning this award as the International Best Comedy Series of 2020 is a recognition of the highest quality of dramaturgy being produced by this new generation and of the Brazilian audiovisual industry. It is an acknowledgement for the successful productions our national industry has been developing, working in partnerships with TVs and platforms from Brazil and abroad. This award is the result of this whole movement from the Brazilian audiovisual industry, it goes beyond Nobody’s Looking, it’s an award shared with the whole industry. Q A With For Sama Producer Waad al-Kateab

Q

Where are you going to keep your Emmy®?

I have a corner in my living room where I keep all the awards. This one is very special to me. I have a big picture of me at the Emmys, which was gifted to me from my friends from Aleppo so I am going to put it next to my first Emmy® for ‘Inside Aleppo’.

Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®? The Emmy® is very special. It means so much for us. To keep the fight going. In 2017, when I won an Emmy® for ‘Inside Aleppo’, I wasn’t able to accept the award on the stage. I had to be hidden from view. I sent my words to my Channel 4 News Editor Ben de Pear who received it on my behalf and the last thing he read was, “Don’t forget Syria”. Today, 4 years after we were displaced from Aleppo, we are still fighting.

I spoke out this year and we are here to keep reminding people what is happening. We still want to tell stories and we want these stories to be heard. Winning this award means that we didn’t give up and this amazing platform helps our voices to reach further across the whole world. Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? In the meantime, my main focus is on Action for Sama our impact campaign around the film, which highlights the attack on hospitals in Syria. Our hope is for people to join us, to become part of the For Sama family and help us to raise the voices of our people in Syria. I also want to keep telling stories from and about my country in different ways. I have a couple of projects which I am developing now. It is still early to talk about these, but I am very excited about them.

Our very first International Emmy® will be front and center. I might get to take it home for a night and photograph it on my sideboard! Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

It’s so important in a landscape of big scale entertainment and reality shows that a smaller factual entertainment series like Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds can stand up and compete with these. It was a series with a small budget and team, but big in ambition and passion. It reflected the essence of what program makers strive to achieve and that is telling a story in a way that will engage

and entertain an audience. It’s important to show that we can makea positive difference to peoples’ lives through our craft, and for that to be acknowledged with an Emmy® award is just the best! Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? I’ve actually just finished the shoot of the second series of Old People’s Home For 4 Year Olds, which was an incredible challenge during COVID -19. We were pretty lucky here in Australia as we weren’t as badly affected as the rest of the world but it was still an incredible amount of intricate planning and safety protocols that created the ability for us to make the series. We are now in post and it’s going to be as beautiful as Series 1. I will keep my Emmy in my living room, on the bookcase, next to my books about cinema. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

Winning an Emmy® is always an endorsement of the quality of a project. In the case of ‘Orphans of a Nation’, the award also has two very important aspects: first, the certainty that it was the right choice to invest in such

an unusual topic for a telenovela – the refugee issue; second, the international visibility of an award like the Emmy greatly expands the reach of the project’s message, that is tolerance and fraternity, and it is something that has always been our goal.

In 2019, Hong Kong surprised itself, China and the rest of the world. A fabulously wealthy financial hub, supposedly driven mainly by the pursuit of profit, stood up to its own government and its masters in Beijing even though this was a willful act of economic self-harm. It did so in spectacular fashion. Suddenly politics and the pursuit of liberty mattered more than economics even though the people of Hong Kong know 56

To receive more recognition for the program is of course incredibly humbling, but for all of us, especially Steven Frank the Holocaust survivor who told us his story for the documentary, it’s incredibly important. Steven is a man who has devoted decades of his life to Holocaust education, and each year usually gives scores of talks

to young people. Because of Covid, none of that has been possible, but thankfully, through the documentary and the continued recognition and attention that the Emmy® win has brought to it, means that whilst he’s stuck at home, his voice continues to be heard. Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? As is tradition in my department, NRK Super, we keep the department’s different awards trophies in a display case centrally placed in the office, so that everyone can enjoy our successes. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

We speak for the entire production, crew and actors when we say that winning an Emmy® means the world to us. The series strives to tell a believable story about young girls’ and boys’ quest for popularity and struggle to be liked. It depicts exclusion, bullying, loneliness and the act of actively choosing someone over the other. Our objective is to help young people recognize similar mechanisms in their own lives, and to understand

that they are not alone. Attention from the International Emmy® Awards gives us a boost, and inspires us to make more content for our viewers. As a public broadcaster it is humbling and inspiring for NRK Super to be seen and recognized in the multitude of beautiful international productions. Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? We are still making the same series, Like ♥ Me, and as we speak we are preparing for the shooting of our season 5 and 6. As the series follows the target group’s (and the actors’) age, the persons in the series are now in their 15th year, and the topics are consequently about this age group’s main challenges – on social media and in real life. The fundamental problem is still the strive to be liked, to be loved, to have friends.

Personally, it was exciting to get an International Emmy®. It meant recognition for a project that I always thought would and should have international appeal. After all, “Katy” is a universal story about a young girl refusing to be defined by her physical disability, which

had its roots in an American 19th century novel, “What Katy Did”. It was a thrill to be part of an excellent showcase for an exceptional young talent in Chloe Lea, who played “Katy”. ho would have guessed? As it did for all of us, the year 2020 created a new challenge for the International Academy. With over 600 members across 50 + countries, the Academy is a truly global organization and so usually, are its events. By end of March, work from home became the new normal, borders were closing in all parts of the world and travel came to a full stop. It was quickly evident that the Covid-19 pandemic would change everything. In-person events were obviously no longer possible, so, the Academy decided quickly to pivot its events online and create a new way for its members to connect, network, and hear about substantive issues from leading television and media professionals from around the world. We decided

to adapt our M+ Lounge, which had previously taken place in the physical world, at industry trade shows and conferences, to M+ Virtual, an online gathering of our Members, and their guests, around a speaker or two…. This gave all of our Members the opportunity to connect from wherever they were based. We launched the first M+ Virtual in April 2020, with Leopold Hoesch, a Director of the Academy and International Emmy® Winner, as our first speaker. Leopold was producing a documentary on the pandemic at the time, so it seemed fitting to kick it off with him. This first M + was not recorded as none of us could anticipate this would become the first of a series. As the year unfolded, we held all of our events online, including our June and November Board & Members Meetings. A recap of our events follows.

Academy Day Academy Day is a high-level, by-invitation only 4 day event designed to shine a spotlight on the culture and media industry of a specific region and foster a better understanding of regional business models and cultural institutions to help facilitate cross border collaboration. It is a customized event hosted by an Academy Partner which offers members an exclusive opportunity to take a deep-dive into the television industry of a specific region, and network with the leading executives and officials of that region. 94

April 29, 2020 Our first speaker of 2020, told us about his early work on a documentary about the Covid-19 pandemic and what he has learned so far, through his research. Broadview Pictures’ production partners are ZDF and Filmstiftung NRW. The pandemic has not affected the project and the project will not be finished until the outcome is clearer. This Summer, the Semi-Final Round of Judging for the 2020 International Emmy® Awards competition took place mostly online, for the first time. From June to September, 26 Member companies hosted jury panels. Our Hosts span 22 countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, PR China, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and The United States. The online judgings were powered by the Frame.io video review and collaboration platform.

Semi-Final Rounds of Judging are not only a crucial step in the judging process, but also a great networking opportunity for the Host, and for Jurors invited to participate in the competition. Jurors, selected by the Academy in collaboration with the Host, are television professionals involved in all sectors of the industry. Hosts have the opportunity to choose from two options: to organize a judging with sole branding for their company or to have outside sponsors for their event and become an International Emmy® World Television Festival Sponsor.

This year’s winner, from the UK, is Hannah Westall for her script, Mind the Gap.

The Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award is designed to motivate novice writers worldwide, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting. Entrants are asked to create a completed half-hour to one-hour English language television drama script.

The 2021 Competition opens in April.

After a long obsession with storytelling of all kinds, particularly television, and achieving a FirstClass Honors in her BA Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies degree, Hannah realized she wanted to be a Screenwriter. She started writing in 2015, when she became Deputy Head of Comedy at the Cardiff University Student Television Station: CUTV. After graduating, Hannah decided to undertake the MA Screenwriting program at London College of Communication. She wants to write stories for the screen that make audiences feel less alone, tackling issues such as mental health, and elevate diverse voices.
