his was a good year for the International Academy, despite all the challenges of labor strife and armed conflict around the world. With US writers and actors on strike for much of the year, television production came to a halt, though all the strikes ended shortly before the 51st International Emmy® Awards Gala, permitting that event to go forward as originally planned.

The International Academy has grown to nearly 1,000 members, with increased representation in parts of the world where we had little visibility before. This growth is the result of both the increasing impact and relevance of the Academy, and an organized and sustained campaign to add candidates by members of our board and the Academy staff. In June, we organized another of our signature Academy Days, this time in Istanbul, Turkey under the sponsorship of Ay Yapim and its CEO, Kerem Çatay. The event was very successful with participation from much of the creative community in Istanbul and a stunning closing party at the new Istanbul Peninsula Hotel. Other major sponsor activities included an extension of our long-term partnership with TV Globo in Brazil and a Board Meeting hosted by Robert Halmi at the newly built Great Point Studios in Yonkers, New York. We held 30 local judgings, with the participation of Academy members and jurors around the world, and these judgings produced the nominees who competed for International Emmys at the Gala.

BRUCE PAISNER & KEREM ÇATAY AT ACADEMY DAY IN ISTANBUL

The annual Gala again took place at the end of November at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. We presented Emmys in 14 categories, including our new category, Sports Documentary. Highlights of the Gala were the presentation of two special awards, the Founders® Emmy Award to Jesse Armstrong, the creator and writer of Succession, and the Directorate Emmy® Award to Ekta Kapoor, a major force in television in India. Jesse Armstrong was a particularly strong presence at our events this year. He took part in our luncheon panel the day of the Gala and spoke eloquently when he received the Founders Emmy® at the Gala. During the weekend before the Gala, all of these programs were on display at the International Emmy® World Festival at the Sofitel Hotel in New York. Many of the programs were accompanied by their creators or cast who explained the ideas behind their programs and spoke to Academy Members at a series of Nominee panels. The Academy is a non-profit organization, which relies on member dues and sponsors for its funding. Among the blue-chip sponsors who extended their contracts this year were TV Globo and Globoplay of Brazil and Ay Yapim of Turkey. Other new sponsors are expected

to sign up during 2024. Key to its operation is a small and dedicated staff, led by Camille Bidermann who has been Executive Director of the organization for many years. The staff is backed up by an Executive Committee of Television industry veterans who contribute mightily to the organization on a pro bono basis. My thanks go to its members Fred Cohen (Chairman), Bruce Tuchman (Secretary), Kevin Beggs (Treasurer), Piv Bernth, Adina Pitt, Armando Nuñez Jr, and Abbe Raven. I want to salute my colleagues at Hearst, who have supported my work at the International Academy throughout my tenure. I particularly want to thank Steven R. Swartz, Hearst President & CEO, and Steve’s predecessor as CEO, Frank A. Bennack Jr., the Executive Vice Chairman of Hearst. Steve has always provided invaluable support and guidance to me and the Academy. Frank hired me at Hearst many years ago and has been a source of inspiration ever since. And finally, I want to extend my gratitude to the Academy Directors for entrusting me with the role of President and CEO. Our members are a unique group of lively informed people from around the world who care about television and the work they do to make it better. That caring and dedication has enhanced and strengthened the International Academy.

Q Where are you going to keep your Emmy®? In my office, so it can inspire me every time I go to work, get rejected or lose hope. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®? Being the first Mexican actress to have ever won an Emmy® is an honor I never expected nor dreamed of. Our film “Dive” also won an Emmy® for best TV movie, making history as the first Mexican film to do so. I am committed to continue using the arts to better grasp our experience as humans. Winning these Emmys motivates us to continue pressing forward. Thank you!

Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? I am currently developing a few things in Mexico and the U.S. but would love to work in France. I was fortunate to spend many years in France during my teens and would relish the opportunity to return.

Q A With Vir Das Executive Producer of Vir Das: Landing

Q Where are you going to keep your Emmy®? I think I’m going to keep it on my desk at home. Sort of a gentle reminder to work hard and to stay authentic. Not sure if it’s very prestigious to have an Emmy® standing next to a picture of a bulldog and an oat milk cappuccino, but that’s where she is going. I’m also very seriously considering the windowsill, almost like an Emmy® needs sunshine, but I’m afraid I’ll get robbed. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®? I think it validated that comedy can be honest and emotional and intentional. I’ve always seen comedy as a central feeling and a deeper connection with an audience that transcends nationalities. Something like

this means someone in Brazil, or someone in Tokyo caught and felt what I was trying to say as an Indian. It meant the world to be voted for by the world. It gives me the strength to believe I have a global voice. Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? I’m touring the world this year to 33 countries, co-directing my first feature that I’ll star in, and should be seen in two Indian series and an American series as an actor. Somewhere in there I want to find time to make some music. But you know what they say, if you want to see how funny the universe is, tell it your plans.

Q Where are you going to keep your Emmy®? At the moment it lives in our guest bedroom. When friends and family have stayed over they’ve had pictures taken with it. A few of them have even launched into an acceptance speech. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®?

Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? I am working on a comedy thriller, three best friends try to solve a mystery in Ireland. Lots of twists and turns, lots of laughs, but at it’s heart it’s a show about friendship. I’m very excited about it. It’s a real passion project.

It’s just incredible. To win such a prestigious award means the world to the whole Derry Girls team. Seeing a show like ours getting recognised on the global stage was just the best way to end this journey. I couldn’t have written a more perfect ending. I still can’t quite believe it.

Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? The same team that made Mariupol: The People’s Story are now embarking on a film about the Hamas attack and the subsequent invasion of Gaza. To say I am looking forward to that is not the right expression, but it’s a very important story that we feel compelled to tell.

Documentary is a broad category and there are so many great films out there so it feels like a great honor to win. I was shocked when they read out the winner but felt really happy for our team and the people of Mariupol who showed such bravery in recounting their stories for us.

It’s a testament to the creativity, passion and determination of big group of talented Aussies, we are still in shock!

We have a few projects we are really excited about, we have just finished another season of Heartbreak High and we are also working with some super talented folks on a very successful Australian musical, a film comedy and also an elevated horror series, so lots to explore and bring to the work in the next couple of years.

This Emmy® is a real international recognition. Since I’ve been back in France, all my fellow directors have been congratulating me. Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? Dive was an intense drama. My partner, Karla Souza (who also won an Emmy® for Best Performance by an Actress) and I have decided to shift towards something lighter and funnier for our next project. Joke aside, this arrangement is a daily reminder of the story we told. Q Tell us about the importance of winning an Emmy®? Winning an Emmy® is a significant achievement that means excellence and recognition from my colleagues. However, it’s crucial to understand that this prestigious award is not the terminus of a professional journey, but rather a remarkable milestone along the way.

An Emmy® win undeniably attracts attention, instills confidence, and opens doors to new opportunities. Yet, this recognition also brings a kind of pressure — a drive to not only maintain but also to push the level of excellence already achieved. In other words maintaining that standard is definitely more challenging than winning the award itself. Q What upcoming projects are you or would you like to be working on next? Looking ahead, the focus is to deliver longer projects while keeping the DNA of Off The Grid program. This means looking for investigative, indepth and nuanced testimonies, as well as exploring creative filming and directing techniques. I believe this approach should resonate with the audience’s expectations for high-quality and impactful storytelling. But for now it’s too early to say what’s next. Our first speaker of 2023 talked about the story and filming devices behind his TV-Movie Help, set in a care home in Britain during the Covid-19 pandemic. Featuring the actress Jodi Comer as the main character and written by Jack Thorne, the film is shot in the style of a horror movie and shows the struggle of a care worker left alone to help a dying patient.

Love on the Spectrum, Executive Producer, Karina Holden explained the creative and production journey behind her reality docu-series about autistic people and their quest for connection and love. She also touched upon working with Netflix on the US version after the success of the original Australian version.

Producer and entrepreneur Ektaa Kapoor talked about her career and what has driven her choices since she started telling stories at the early age of 17 in the garage of her parents. She also addressed the challenges of being a woman and telling stories with female point of views and strong women characters.

Writer, director and creator Jesse Armstrong took us behind the scenes of the writing and creative process behind the global hit series Succession and the different media families and personalities the writers researched to create the show’s characters. He also talked about how he started his career in television as a writer and working both in the UK and the US.

ACADEMY DAY IN ISTANBUL INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY DAY IN ISTANBUL MAY 31 TO JUNE 3, 2023 A delegation of international television professionals converged in Istanbul from May 31 to June 3rd for International Academy Day, a series of networking events and panels, designed to shine the spotlight on Turkey’s television industry. Hosted by Ay Yapim and its CEO, Kerem Çatay, the event opened with a welcome cocktail on the rooftop of the Swissotel The Bosphorus, organized specially for Academy Members on Wednesday May 31. Highlights of the three-day event include panels and keynote sessions on various substantive topics regarding the Turkish media landscape. On day 1, Academy Members and their guests headed to Feriye, for the Academy’s June Board & Members Meeting and a day of panels. In the evening, the group visited the Basilica Cistern and attended a traditional

dinner in the Old City. On day 2, members attended more panels about the role of women in the Turkish television industry and the specificities of Turkish programming. The day finished with a boat visit, a dinner, and a closing party at the Peninsula hotel in the newly renovated Galataport. The closing party brought together the Who’s Who of Turkish Media & Entertainment and featured a concert by Turkish singer Kenan Dogulu. On day 3 members and their guests had a guided walking tour of the Blue Mosque and Old City followed by a closing lunch in the Grand Bazaar. Photos from the different panels and activities follow.

During the Summer, the Semi-Final Round of Judging for the 2023 International Emmy® Awards competition took place around the world. From June to September, 30 member companies hosted Jury panels. Our Hosts spanned 18 countries: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, India, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, the UAE and the United States. The online judgings were powered by Frame.io, the video review and collaboration platform. Semi-final Rounds of Judging are not only a crucial step in the judging process, but also a great networking opportunity for the Host, and for the Jurors invited to participate in the competition. Jurors, selected by the Academy in collaboration with the Host, are television professionals involved in all sectors of the industry. Hosts have the opportunity to choose from two options: to organize a judging with sole branding for their company, or to have outside sponsors for their event and become an International Emmy® World Television Festival Sponsor.

The Sir Peter Ustinov Television Scriptwriting Award is designed to motivate novice writers worldwide, and offer them the recognition and encouragement that might lead to a successful career in television scriptwriting. 2023 SIR PETER USTINOV TELEVISION SCRIPTWRITING AWARD WINNER: OMAR KAHN, POCKET MAN

This year’s winner, from the UK, is Omar Khan for his script, Pocket Man. Omar Khan is a 27-year-old, British Pakistani writer actor who has been quietly building a large network of industry relationships through relentless cold calling and proactivity. This tenacity recently resulted in this London based creative’s first short film, which he wrote and starred in, funded by Netflix through UK based production company Fully Focused. After screening this film to a room comprised largely of his own network he’d amassed, he

received the opportunity to perform some of his original writing on the West End with the National Youth Theatre – where he is a member as an actor - before receiving his first commission as a playwright with them with the run of his first play scheduled for Spring 2024. Omar is eager to tell fresh, relatable, and engaging stories certainly making him a creative to keep an eye on in the years to come. A prolific writer having written plays, series pilots, full length features, short stories, Omar’s style traverse all genres but what remains constant is the sharp dialogue he employs. Whether he explores grief in a horror film or romantic relationships in a twisted road trip between two outsiders. Whether it be friendship and chosen family in a sitcom pilot or generational trauma in a character study, Omar draws inspiration from his real life to write characters that are, above all, honest. Omar likens his stories to life and with life, there is no one genre. Laced with black comedy, even the saddest stories have a touch of levity. Moments are happy and sad, funny and tragic and all within moments of each other. This authenticity of Omar’s primary concern when writing any genre and is something that is supremely palpable in his work. About Pocket Man When trauma causes a 1st generation Pakistani immigrant to flee his homeland, pressure from his back home and the desire to adopt a child with his wife lead him to use his skills as a circus performer to aid a local gang in their crimes.
