GALA
PROGRAM MONDAY NOVEMBER 21, 2022
WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome back to the Hilton ballroom, the International Emmys, and the kind of Gala we have loved for most of the last 50 years. This year’s Gala celebrates the Academy’s 50th, and honors two outstanding women who have done so much for our industry, Miky Lee and Ava DuVernay. You can read about both of them, their work and their incredible careers inside this program.
Each year the Gala is the culmination of a year-long process in which television programs in 15 different categories, are selected, entered, judged, and then compete for an Emmy®.
This has been an outstanding year for the International Academy, as it emerged from pandemic restrictions and gradually picked up speed. Our staff went back to work at our offices in New York, and in person judgings took place at most of our judging sites around the world. We had a large number of entries, and the finalists represent 23 countries and every inhabited continent. We have a full roster of categories, and this year we have added a new one, Sports Documentary. All of our entries taken together provide a broad and comprehensive view of the state of television programming around the world.
Over the past weekend, we have once again held our International Emmy® World Television Festival, a comprehensive showcase of all our nominees, and panels and conversations with their creators. The Festival has been on hold for a couple of years because of the pandemic, and it’s great to see it resuming.
So, welcome to the International Emmy® Awards Gala. Congratulations to the International Emmy® winners, best wishes for next time to the other fine finalists, and let the International Emmys begin.
