As we bid the Summer goodbye, we look forward to an early and long Fall, a truly fantastic time to be in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Congratulations to Pinewild's own Symon Balbin on an incredible achievement, winning the North Carolina Open Championship! Read more about Symon's championship win at the link below. North Carolina Open Adding to the significance of the victory, the NC Open has special ties to Pinewild. This major championship on the Carolinas PGA schedule was previously won by Pinewild's Gus Ulrich, who captured the title in 1996 and 1998. The Advisory Board has three openings for three-year terms starting with the Fall 2026 session. The voting has now started, so get your Ballot in. Congratulations to Jim Koenig, who recorded the third hole-in-one of his career on July 30 at the 3rd hole of Magnolia. Jim's ace came on the 150yard par 3, where he struck a perfect 6-iron that found the bottom of the cup. The memorable shot was witnessed by fellow members Mike Braaten and Chip LeBlanc.

PWGA Summer Competition Highlights July 28: Green Tee Ringer Event Forty-four PWGA golfers braved the summer heat and humidity for a two-person Green Tee Ringer tournament on the back nine of Magnolia. Players competed on holes 10-18 twice, recording their best score on each hole for a final ringer score. August 25: CGA Play Day & Stableford Competition A beautiful day greeted the 16 women who participated in the Green Tee CGA Play Day on Magnolia. After a scorecard playoff, Carol Angus claimed victory over Cathy Slocum, with both posting net scores of 75. Shirley Sellgren and Paula Montgomery finished close behind at 76. Congratulations, Carol!

August 11: Holly vs. Magnolia Series The PWGA's second installment of the threeevent Holly vs. Magnolia series was played on the Magnolia Course using a Select Drive Alternate Shot Net Stableford format. Under sunny skies and challenging summer conditions, Team Magnolia once again put together a strong performance, earning 315 Stableford points compared to 268 points for Team Holly.

In Memoriam The PWGA Board is saddened to share the passing of Jim Hemingway, husband of PWGA member Jill Hemingway. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jill and her family during this difficult time. A Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.

One of Pinewild’s premier golf traditions, the Member-Member Championship, brought members together for a 36-hole Fourball Stroke Play competition featuring both Men’s and Women’s divisions. Competitors showcased outstanding teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship as they vied for Overall Gross and Overall Net honors.

August brought nearly six inches of much-needed rainfall, providing excellent growing conditions across the property and helping the courses recover from the stresses of summer. While turfgrass growth will continue through much of September, cooler temperatures and shorter days will gradually slow growth as we move toward fall.

OUR AGRONOMY TEAM WILL REMAIN FOCUSED ON COURSE CONDITIONING AND LONG-TERM TURF HEALTH THROUGHOUT THE MONTH.

Key Projects Include Magnolia Course Sod several of the most heavily trafficked teeing areas to restore turf density, improve playability, and enhance overall appearance.

Holly Course Begin selective tree removal around the 3rd green complex to improve sunlight penetration and air circulation, creating healthier growing conditions for the turf.

Azalea Course Maintain bentgrass health through the year's most challenging growing conditions while continuing targeted goosegrass removal to preserve turf quality and ensure exceptional playing conditions.

In the Shop Fall Fitting Days PLUS NEW ARRIVALS IN THE GOLF SHOP Fall is just around the corner, which means Fall Fitting Days are returning to Pinewild! We currently have fitting events scheduled with Callaway, Ping, Mizuno, TaylorMade, and Titleist, giving members the opportunity to work directly with manufacturer representatives and find the equipment best suited to their game. Our August fittings days were a tremendous success. Don't miss your chance to take advantage of these upcoming opportunities in September. Pinewild HAPPENINGS Linden Garden Club A SECOND SPRING IN THE SANDHILLS By Claudia Watson, NC State Extension Master Gardener (SM) volunteer Why Now Is a Good Time to Plant As summer loosens its grip, September gives Sandhills gardeners a welcome second spring. Warm soil and cooler days help newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials establish roots before next summer’s heat returns. Start with the Soil Before you grab a shovel or bring home plants, take a few minutes to check your soil. A simple soil test reveals pH and nutrient levels, so you know what your garden needs before planting. North Carolina residents can get free soil testing through the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services until November 30, 2026. After December 1, each sample costs $5. Give New Plants a Good Start Once your plants are in place, water deeply and monitor the soil for the next few weeks. Keep moisture steady while roots spread, then gradually ease back as plants establish. Choose Locally Friendly Plants For the best chance of success, choose plants suited to Sandhills conditions and planting zone 8A. North Carolina natives and other drought-tolerant varieties are often smart choices for sandy soils, heat, and occasional dry spells. The NC State Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox can help you find plants that fit your yard, sunlight, and soil. A little September planning can give your garden stronger roots and a healthier start next spring.

The Fall Warm-Up Advantage Why a few minutes of preparation can make a big difference in comfort, mobility, and performance. As we all look forward to the fall season & a nice reprieve from this hot weather, let's take a quick moment to talk about the importance of a Proper Warm-Up before going out to play golf or participating in any physical activity. As we start to get those cooler mornings, it is key that we warm-up our body prior to play to help minimize injury risk as well as improve Range of Motion. Luckily, warm-up doesn't require any fancy equipment (golf clubs & golf carts can do the trick) & can either be done at the Driving Range or at home. Feel free to ask any of the Golf Professionals at the Club their favorite warm-up stretches/activities & add it in to your repertoire!

Aquatics Pinewild Pool Cool off and relax at the Pinewild pool—your go-to spot for sunny summer days. Unwind poolside, enjoy time with family, or make a splash with friends—the pool is open and ready. Before heading over, be sure to check daily updates on hours and conditions here: Pool Condition and Updates Open daily, 8:00 AM to 30 minutes before sunset. Closed Tuesday mornings (before 11:00 AM) as needed for maintenance.

Upcoming Classes Continuing Water Aerobics with Johan de Brigard June - September Tuesdays 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Thursdays 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Enjoy a fun, low-impact workout in the pool with our summer Water Aerobics classes. Perfect for all fitness levels, it’s a great way to stay active and cool.

Details and Registration $10 per week Water Aerobics is open to all members and limited to 35 participants per class. Fees will be billed to your member account. Registration is available through Golf Genius, and participants will receive a weekly confirmation email each Friday for the upcoming week.

Construction U P D AT E There’s a lot of visible progress happening around Pinewild — especially at the Clubhouse, where the new spaces are starting to feel much more real. You can see the latest flyover here. The new porte cochère is now in place, along with the Holly Hall ballroom and the adjoining connector and setup space. Walking through the interior, you can really begin to see the layout taking shape, from the expansive kitchen and dining areas to the private Gary Player Room. Over at the new Athletic Center, the building is fully vertical. You can already see where the large windows will go, bringing in plenty of natural light and giving the Racquet Pro a clear view of the courts from the retail space. Everything remains on track for completion in Q1 2027. Once the Clubhouse and Athletic Center work wraps up, attention will turn right away to the surrounding areas, including removal of the temporary trailers and the addition of dedicated pickleball courts. There’s still plenty of work ahead, but it’s exciting to see these spaces coming to life and to get a better sense of what the finished experience will feel like for our members.
