DESIGN FOR SMART URBAN COMMUTING

That is what the second year Product Design students from IED - Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome - did when developing real and innovative concepts for ZEHUS human+, an all Italian group of start ups, which operates in the smart mobility sector.

An interactive bike helmet, a transformable bike jacket, a foldable kickbike, a trike for older people, are just some of the concepts of accessories and vehicles which where born from the analysis of the needs of the urban commuters, of all ages and abilities. The research investigated into how the design of new services, vehicles, accessories, can positively influence peoples mobility behaviours to create safe and green cities and the solutions suggested by the students aim to improve traffic security, breath less smog, protect oneself from rain and wind, and in general to make the journey more pleasant and fun.

The Product Design department of IED Roma is conducting a research on sustainable urban mobility that goes back three years.

Previous projects are: Citybike, the design of a pedal assisted bicycle, Freewheelin’, design of kickscooters and solutions for pedestrians, developed with FN Compositi.

All three projects have used ZEHUS’s electric motor for bikes and scooters.

I would like to thank Marcello Segato and Giovanni Alli, from ZEHUS human+ for their time and good advice, which was essential for the students to make the concepts as close to reality as possible, taking into consideration the market needs and feasibility of production.

SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY

Marcello Segato | CEO ZEHUS human+ Sustainable urban mobility is a developing topic and there is a constant need to come up with new ideas of how to move around in the city of today and in the city of tomorrow.

Europe goes at two speeds, in the area of Germany-Denmark-HollandSwitzerland the percentage of population with an “active commuting” is greater than 50%. The rest of Europe is much behind.

Active commuting is about using the commuting time to do some exercise instead of sitting in a car (passive commuting). It has been proved that the benefit is immense for society (less pollution, more physical activity) and measured in the scale of 100 billions less health care expenses every year.

We, at Zehus, work at hybridisation of human powered vehicles. The main human powered vehicle is of course the bicycle. But there are more and more alternatives to bicycles in our streets today. We launched the Smart Ped, to be the first “kick assisted electric bike”.

What is the purpose of the project with IED-Rome? Up to now, the new product applications of our core technology have been all internal driven.

We want to change that. We want to engage external fresh minds in thinking of the mobility of the future. Enabled by Zehus technology.

It’s amazing the quality of the work that the students of IED can deliver despite the little experience.

We look forward to more and more idea generation to come from IED and to inspire us to make new great products.

Young creative talents supporting a critical cause, sustainable mobility, with innovative but realistic solutions. This was the idea when we started this project.

Ingredients were there: a group of smart designers under the supervision of a professor very dedicated and prepared on this topic.

Results, given also the limited amount of time and resources, are amazing.

We really needed those fresh minds approaching such an important topic. And we all see that they are not dreamers. They are pragmatic guys with a clear vision. And they are our future.

BLINKIE Smart bike lights

Monica Conte, Filippo Guazzaroni and Giulia Lanciotti Blinkie is a lighting system that makes bikers more visible, increasing their safety. High brightness LEDs light up ahead and make bikers visible from behind. A space around the bike is lit up by beams of light projected on the ground and can be used like turn signals.

Blinkie can be connected to the Bitride app for navigation and a LED compass, placed on top of the front device, will help you throughout navigation.

Magnets inside support the device and allow quick and easy hooking/ unhooking from the bike.

Blinkie allows easy fit onto your handbag, backpack or belt.

Blinkie can be equipped with B-Cam: a smart high-resolution camera placed on the rear device and it can be connected through Bluetooth to your smartphone. B-Cam supervises the traffic behind you or your child in the rear seat.

BREASY Breath easy Anti-smog mask

Monica Gargiulo and Francesco Mancini Air pollution in cities is increasing. Many masks do not filter fine particles and are uncomfortable to wear. Breasy is an anti-smog mask which solves these problems thanks to the innovative structure made in silicon and, developed according to the ergonomics of the face, fits perfectly and comfortably. The air passes through a bamboo carbon filter, in textile non-textile, which filters all harmful fine particles. The big valves, which look like shark gills, make it easy to breathe without creating humidity inside the mask. With Breasy cyclists and pedestrians can feel free to breathe like they were out in nature.

MOBIKE Foldable electric kickbike

Matteo Cordiner, Saverio Pio Di Cosmo and Riccardo De Mei Mobike is a foldable electrcic kickbike designed to be used as part of a multimodal mobility. It’s ideal for hilly terrain and for travels through pedestrian areas. It’s shape permits a fast descent and ascent onto the bike, it also facilitates the closure and makes it comfortable to transport.

No pedals mean a more compact design and the wheel cover has been designed to avoid getting dirt on your clothes while carrying Mobike.

SMOG ALERT Smog detection device

Tommaso Gigli e Tommaso Plazzi Smog Alert is a small wearable device which is able to detect smog. Sensors detect the level of CO in the air and signals dangerous levels for your health by changing colours of LEDs, from green to red. It is connected via Bluetooth to your smartphone to share the collected data with your social network and community. In this way it’s possible to trace a map in real time of the streets which are less (or most) polluted in the city.

HOOK A wheelchair Smartped

Federica Farina and Flavia Lorusso Caputi “Hook, the Smartped that connects us�. Two friends that move through the city in a different way while having fun, this is the idea behind Hook, the electric kickscooter that attaches to a weeelchair. The connection is studied for an easy and quick release system that makes the frontal wheels of the wheelchair lift up in order to have only three wheels touching ground so that the ride is safer and more agile. The disabled person and his/hers caregiver will find a new way to travel together.

REWIND and TRUNK Tricycle for 65+

Francesco Ciatoni, Gabriele De Siano, Francesco Ficini, Silvia Iori and Min Ouyang Three wheels vehicle with pedal assistance is designed and studied for people over 65. It’s stability and maneuverability assures an easy and safe drive in the traffic and makes Rewind the ideal vehicle for the urban context.

The seat with backrest helps to maintain an erected and comfortable posture; its mobile strips, three on the sitting and three on the backrest, supports the legs and back during pedaling.Frame, saddle and handlebars, are available in three different colours: white, green and black; making it possible to customize the vehicle.

Rewind’s accessories, Trunk, are inspired by the elephants head shape.

TRUNK 21 - An easy solution to set up a rain cover, with a retractable rainshell system that hides in the box. A basket-space in front of the driver can carry pocket stuffs, sketch-books , small bags and tablets. Included circular LED lights up the path.

TRUNK 22 - Comfortable 80 litres trolley bags. Easy to be loaded and unloaded from the rack. Water -proof and -repellent materials keeps the content dry.

Designed with hand luggage dimentions, wheels and extractible handle, it makes these twin bags also great for flights.

SWAY Smart bicycle helmet

Federica Dattilo, Lavinia Laurenti and Asia Nakita Tavolieri Sway is a smart bicycle helmet with integrated turn signals, controlled by the movement of the head. This particular feature allows you to activate the arrows simply by tilting the head. When the helmet perceives braking the rear position light is activated, while the front light is always on. These functions are possible through a special electric circuit provided with an oscillation sensor (IMU).

If connected to the app Bitride, the turn signals activate automatically following the directions of the navigator, and thanks to the particular shape of the helmet, they will be visible to the user. Furthermore, the helmet is equipped with an intercom and a headset which connect to your smartphone, or other Sway users with whom you are traveling. The electric circuit is powered by a lithium battery that can easily be recharged through a USB cable. Sway is made of ABS and EPS for strength and comfort.

It’s available in matte black or glossy white.

Now, with Sway, you can decide where to go using your head and keep your hands on the handlebars!

ULI Bike jacket

Marta Perla and Enrico Ruffolo ULI is a convertible bicycle anorak that was designed to insure a safer and more comfortable bike ride. To protect yourself from rain there is a cover for your legs and one for your back, both removable while on the move by using just one hand from inner pockets. The front cover can be attached to the bicycle with a magnet to allow leg movement and it can also be detached from the jacket and used as a saddle cover.

ULI also features large capacious pockets and reflective strips to allow better visibility at night. The materials used are polyester and nylon making the jacket 100% waterproof.
