Actress, singer and performer Erica Gimple, who starred as Coco Hernandez, an original cast member in the 1980s hit television series Fame, stopped by the visual and performing arts school to mingle with students.

The visit, made possible by The Brightest Star, Inc., included mini art workshops and an opportunity to sing with the star.

Gimple said the opportunity was unforgettable.

“When teachers put their heart into teaching kids you can feel it and the eyes of these children were alive and engaged,” she said in an email to Brightest Star founder Lea Michelle Cash.

The engineer we will never know

J

ason Spears, the 12-yearold student who was recently murdered, apparently received a bullet that was not intended for him.

I’ve made a commitment to write positive and uplifting articles about our students so I want to share what students and staff at Lincoln Elementary School and Arrowview Middle School thought of him.

Mr. Walt Vidan had this to share: As middle school teachers who are trying to educate 200-plus students every day, we have to work hard to treat each student individually. Each one has hopes, dreams, and desires.

Jason, not only had all these attributes, but also was special.

He was a bit reserved but popular with his fellow students. He was a good-looking young man who was well liked.

This is what Ms. Renita Marshall wants you to know: Jason was in my fourth-grade classroom. He was a beautiful kid

with such a gentle heart. Jason and I were very close. We would walk on the playground together and he’d tell me about his love for his family, and his hopes for the future.

He spent a lot of time thinking and reflecting on life. For a then 9-year-old, I encouraged him to use that as his tool to be resilient in the classroom. He was a simple kid, with aspirations of having a fulfilling life.

He loved to draw, and was successful at activities in the classroom that allowed him to be innovative. He brought a unique value to my classroom that was unmatched by any other student.

Counselors Kimberly Telphy and Andrea Calderon were there to take care of students who were deeply hurt and emotional. As part of a healing process, many of our sixthgrade students express their feelings by writing and creating a card for Jason’s family.

Students wrote, “He was a good friend to all of us,” “Jason was a good friend who always helped others,” “Good friend and good classmate.”

Students even wrote and created their own quote. “You will never be forgotten, we pledge to you today a hollowed place within our hearts is where you’ll always stay.” And finally, one student wrote to Jason’s mother, “Sorry for your loss, your son was a good friend and a good student in class and he could not tell a lie.”

Jason loved sports and really liked playing basketball during his lunchtime. Many students said they miss him playing ball.

Jason expressed that he wanted to become an engineer when he grows up.

Ms. Teri Weatherholtz wants us to know that Jason came into her classroom as a shy and quiet 5-year-old. She was privileged to spend a year teaching and learning from this smart, kind, charismatic boy. When he left her class, he didn’t leave her heart.

“Whenever he would see me he would greet me with a big hug.” We, (Jason’s teachers) were asked what we would remember most about Jason, we all agreed, his smile. His smile could brighten the darkest day.

Response to Joy A. Schrader Regarding City wide elections

The argument against city council people being elected by the whole city vs their separate ward is really quite simple.

To run a city wide campaign costs significantly more money and time than just running a ward campaign. This greatly lowers the pool of potential candidates.

Many, qualified people would not run as they would neither have the time nor the money , and certainly would not have as much of a chance of being winning.

Many years ago Colton had all of its Council people elected by the city at large. What we consistently had was all of them living

within a few miles of each other.

This led to disenfranchising of a large portion of the city as they didn't know their council person and didn't feel they knew them.

Time for Effective Action Against Radical Islamists

The terrorist attacks in Brussels remind us once again of the threat to our own nation and citizens.

Radical Islamists are determined to use violence to create a worldwide caliphate in which sharia law would prevail. Our challenge is to fight these extremists effectively without assuming that all Muslims share that goal.

We must begin by refusing entry to any foreigner who cannot be subjected to a routine background

check, making it more difficult for jihadists to come here. Our government must also take seriously those who speak and preach the necessity of violent jihad, recognizing that they may follow through on their beliefs or inspire those around them to violent acts.

We must step up the war to destroy the Islamic State. Jihadists must be shown that their dream of a modern-day caliphate was an illusion, not reality, and that vio-

lence will be in vain.

This is not a time for despair, but a time for common-sense action unhampered by political correctness.

Words to Think About: Easter Thoughts O

n Sunday, March 27th, millions of Christians throughout the world celebrated Easter.

Easter is the day when Christians celebrate the most fundamental of all Christian holidays-the resurrection of Jesus. In fact, St. Paul, the founder of Christianity, said in I

Corinthians 15:14, “If Christ be not risen, then is our faith vain.”

No one knows exactly when Jesus was born, but Easter can be calculated because of Passover.

Jesus and his disciples were celebrating Passover, which preceded the Crucifixion and Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Another pivotal point is, the resurrection occurred on Sunday rather than the Jewish Sabbath.

Sunday is the first day of the week, when the Gospels say Jesus rose.

This means every Sunday is the commemorative day for Christians when they should be reminded of this most important belief. And yet, in most churches, it is seldom mentioned except on Easter Sunday.

There is little or no empirical proof of the resurrection. The testimony of the Gospels is the primary source of proof. The problem is, the earliest of the Gospels-

Mark-was written 50 years after the event. The other three Gospels were written much later.

Was the resurrection of Jesus a physical or spiritual one? Most Christians today accept it as spiritual. It is difficult to reconcile a physical resurrection with a belief in spiritual immortality.

The reality of Jesus’ post-crucifixion aliveness is the impact on the disciples. Something changed them from a timid group of cowards into a group of men and women who were described as “turning the world upside down.”

They literally toppled the Roman Empire and took control of it with Emperor Constantine.

The second pivotal belief expressed in Easter is the affirmation of immortality. Again, the Apostle Paul graphically describes this hope: “O death, where is thy sting?

O grave, where is thy victory?” (I Corinthians 15:55) The hope of the

Christian is that death is not the end of human existence. Eternal life is ahead.

Most people know Albert Einstein for his Theory of Relativity.

Lesser known is his belief and advocacy of the “indestructibility of matter.” Matter will change appearance but never lose its molecular essence-from ice to water to steam. It doesn’t seem reasonable that our Creator would make the physical indestructible and then allow the spiritual to be destroyed, or as Teilhard Chardin, the great Roman Catholic theologian has said, “It is utterly absurd to believe that the human spirit is so poorly devised that it would contradict its highest aspiration.”

Easter brings out thousands of people to church who have not attended for some time. Easter eggs, baby chicks, Easter lilies and brightly colored clothes all reflect the new life of spring or Oester, as

the early pagans called it. Christians will gather and sing, “Christ the Lord is Risen Today,” and affirm again the aliveness of the spirit of Jesus and their belief in eternal life.

Eugene O’Neill in his classic novel, “Lazarus Laughed,” describes Lazarus-of Mary and Martha fame-in Athens, Greece.

Emperor-to-be Caligula is leading a procession where everyone but Lazarus is bowing. The arrogance of Lazarus irritates Caligula. He threatens to kill Lazarus for refusing to bow. Lazarus responds, “Oh, Caligula, don’t you know death is dead?” He had been there and done that and he had no fear of it.

To the Christian, death is but the transformation from this life to the next.

It is appropriate for Christians to sing the “Hallelujah Chorus” on Easter Sunday.

Amen. Selah. So be it.

While under contract to Liberty Records, they toured with stars like Bobby Vee, Jan & Dean, Brenton Wood, and Del Shannon. As the Rollers, they were booked in 1964 with surf groups like Dick Dale and the Del Tones at the former Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino.

"Everyone came to the Swing Auditorium back then," recalled Wilson. "There were good local groups like the Metallics, the Pentagons, and Rosie and the Originals. Don Ray Sampson was a good singer. He and Willie Willingham where in the Jewels with us." Wilson told about one concert at the Swing where Dick Dale jumped off the stage and got into a fist fight with a heckler. "Yes. He was known for doing that."

Wilson said the Mighty Kings of Harmony of San Bernardino recorded many songs on vinyl.

Other tunes were probably independent pressings sold at shows.

Their only album that be found on Youtube is from 1981 entitled "The Mighty Kings of Harmony Do Rocking Spirituals."

Included on that recording is some of the best music of any genre to come out of San Bernardino. Although not produced under the best recording conditions, the song "Lord You're My Guiding Light" is just outstanding. Another song off that Lp is the ballad called

"Jesus You are the Only One." Eddie Wilson said that he and Al were military veterans. He joined the Army after attending Jackson State University and played baseball on a traveling

semi-pro team in Mississippi.

He said Al joined the Navy in 1958 and the rest of the family followed him to California from Mississippi.

ddie and Al Wilson developed their singing talents at an early age.

The brothers began singing gospel music together in their pre-teens in their Meridian, Mississippi church until they moved to San Bernardino. They were fairly successful at the commercial pop level by recording a number of catchy songs with the Jewels and the Rollers. By 1964, Eddie and Al went their separate ways musically.

Al was hired by England's Johnny Harris to sing lead vocals in his rock/jazz fusion group the Statesmen. Eddie went back to singing gospel and formed his own group called

Eddie Wilson and the Integrations. Eddie Wilson then performed for the next 20 years with the Mighty Kings of Harmony of San Bernardino.

At the same time Al Wilson was working his way up the top40 charts, Eddie Wilson preferred the gospel end of the business. Al was flying to New York and Europe while Eddie and the five members of the Mighty Kings of Harmony drove the distance of Interstate10 to sing in churches throughout the south. "There wasn't a time when it wasn't raining when we drove through Texas," said Eddie Wilson.

mmigration organizers and health advocates emphasized the importance of mental and physical health stability in immigrant communities during a health conference at Pitzer College on March 26.

The second-year UndocuHealth Conference put together by the Inland Empire Immigrant Youth Coalition (IEIYC) featured work-

shops and discussions about important topics such as Full Scope MediCal for All Children (Senate Bill 75) and the conditions of immigrant detainees in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers.

“For us [the immigrant community], this is a conversation,” said Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ICIJ) director Javier Hernandez. “We are systematically excluded from health. We need to

take in this information and continue to fight for health for all.”

The decision to expand MediCal to all children regardless of citizenship status resulted in a $40 million distribution of state monies to fund the program in the next fiscal year, with $132 million intended to be allocated in following years. When implementation of the expansion takes place in May, an estimated 170,000 un-

esar Chavez (born César Estrada Chávez, March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993) was an American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist, who, with Dolores Huerta, co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers union, UFW).

A Mexican American, Chavez became the best known Latino American civil rights activist, and was strongly promoted by the American labor movement, which was eager to enroll Hispanic members. His public-relations approach to unionism and aggressive but nonviolent tactics made the farm workers' struggle a moral cause with nationwide support. By the late 1970s, his tactics had forced growers to recognize the UFW as the bargaining agent for 50,000 field workers in California and Florida. However, by the mid-1980s membership in the UFW had dwindled to around 15,000.

During his lifetime, Colegio Cesar Chavez was one of the few institutions named in his honor, but after his death he became a major historical icon for the Latino community, with many schools, streets, and parks being named after him. He has since become an icon for organized labor

and leftist politics, symbolizing support for workers and for Hispanic empowerment based on grass roots organizing. He is also famous for popularizing the slogan "Sí, se puede" (Spanish for "Yes, one can" or, roughly, "Yes, it can be done"), which was adopted as the 2008 campaign slogan of Barack Obama. His supporters say his work led to nu-

merous improvements for union laborers. Although the UFW faltered a few years after Chavez died in 1993, he became an iconic "folk saint" in the pantheon of Mexican Americans. His birthday, March 31, has become Cesar Chavez Day, a state holiday in California, Colorado, and Texas

documented children will be eligible for health coverage under the state-sponsored program.

Maribel Nunez of the California Partnership referred to recent data and health studies that demonstrate a lack of coverage among the immigrant community. According to a study done by the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, up to 1.5 million undocumented immigrants will remain uninsured by 2019. About 122,000 of those who are uninsured reside in the Inland Empire.

Nonetheless Nunez said about 28,000 undocumented youth under the age of 19 will benefit from the implementation of full scope MediCal coverage. She is hoping the continuing efforts of the California Partnership, the IEIYC, and other immigrant rights advocates will urge state leaders to expand coverage to undocumented adults.

“We appreciate Senator Lara’s leadership, but he did not talk to the community advocates,” she said. “We’re trying to work with him more closely to push forward.”

An organizer’s ethnographic research displays incarceration rates among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, and Queer (LGBTQ) immigrants.

According to Jesus Barrios, health educator with the Hispanic Aids Forum and founder of the IEIYC, in the 20 interviews he

has conducted in the last ten months, approximately 85 percent requested mental health services, HIV care, and attention for other ailments.

Barrios said he hopes his research will help transform health practices in the immigrant community and “fill the gaps.”

“The advocacy needs to continue,” said Barrios. “Public health has an important role, whether directly or indirectly. Undocumented people are barred from receiving health benefits.

How can we work together to make sure people in detention access at full capacity?”

Conference keynote speaker Imelda Plascencia of the Latino Coalition For A Healthy California encouraged preventative care as a means to not only resolve systemic problems in immigrant communities, but also sustain healthy behaviors on a day-to-day basis.

“A lot of issues we are facing are systemic. It’s been constructed for us to not have access to healthy food and environment. It’s very easy to disregard undocumented people’s lives,” she said. “But we are a part of the fabrication of what California is. Immigrants take care of the state in unseen ways. This Health for All movement is our way of saying, we take care of California. California should be taking care of us.”

ound 2 of the Ultimate Amateur Series was held recently at Perris Raceway, the oldest racetrack in our area. Rialto Wilmer Amina Carter High School Spanish Teacher Joel Plitt won the dirt bike giveaway.

“I was looking at him when his name was called,” recounted Dave Riley. “The look of surprise and disbelief that appeared on his face hasn’t left.”

“It is pretty awesome…still hard to believe that I won it,” said a mesmerized Plitt.

There were races going on too.

The 35+ Amateur was first up with Spanish Teacher Plitt on the line.

The John Burr Cycles, Pirelli, Fasstco, Maxima, Factory Connection, Moto-Master, Twin Air, DR.D sponsored rider battled hard for fourth place. Greg Shank took home the win, followed by Christopher Johnson in second and Jose Revelo in third.

Plitt also contended the Open-Vet Amateur Class. His second place finish was a solid improvement over round one. During each moto he tried to chase around Yamaha rider Nickademas Smith. “He rode great,” Plitt said of Smith. “He was out of my sight after a lap.” Smith kept his podium streak alive in this class. The third overall he earned in round one combined with the win in round two placed him in the points lead for the class.

The hard fought 35+ Novice race was entertaining once again. Dave Riley and Anthony Zappier were battling again, just as round one.

Riley was all over Zappier in the first moto, but was unable to make a move for the lead after a lackluster start.

The second moto began the same way. Riley was close behind. “I was riding, and Dave was close to me just like the first moto, then I didn’t hear him anymore,” said Zappier. “I had a little tip-over and he got away,” explained Riley.

This allowed Richard Byrnes to sneak into second and grab second overall. In the series, Zappier has a perfect score so far. Riley is 8 points behind and Byrnes just 4 be-

hind him.

A hotly contested class is the Intermediate 250 class.

Tylor Matcham and Trevor Hooten are tied with 38 points a piece. Eric Jones is within striking distance of them, as is Derek Kelley, Tyler Rosa, Shawn Butler, Nathan Hamlin and Sylan Woodcock. Keep your eyes on this class to see who comes away with the title.

Cajon Girls Rally To Win State Title

he Cajon girls basketball team saved its best quarter of the season for the very

end.

It was neck and neck through three quarters but a late 19-0 run by Cajon turned a close game into a 55-36 rout of Elk Grove in the CIF State Division II title game on Saturday, March 26, at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, CA. It is the first state title in Cajon’s school history while both schools were making their first appearance in the state title game. It is also the first state title for a team from San Bernardino County. Rialto nearly

pulled off the feat in 2011 but finished as the runner up in Division II that year.

Kayla Washington and Tyla Turner led Cajon (27-6), the No.2 seed, with 17 points apiece.

Cajon finished with a huge 44-21 rebounding advantage, in large part because Taylor Goldsberry hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds while also scoring 12 points.

Cajon fell behind by nine early on but took its first lead with four seconds left in the first half after Tyra Turner hit a three-pointer to make it 21-20.

Elk Grove (24-11), the No. 12 seed, actually took a 32-29 into the fourth quarter but it was all Cajon

after that.

Cajon proceeded to go on a 19-0 run that actually started on a basket in the final minute of the third and encompassed 8:30 of game time into the fourth.

Goldsberry, one of five senior starters for Cajon, tied the game with a free throw to start the fourth and then Tyla Turner scored four straight points to make it 36-32.

Washington scored a fast break basket to extend the lead to six and the momentum never shifted back thanks to Cajon’s defense.

Cajon picked up wins against Taft, Mira Costa, Harvard-Westlake and Mater Dei during its ride to the State title.

Move your caboose! San Bernardino County Museum aims to break world record for largest Soul Train Dance

Train Days are chugging back into the San Bernardino County Museum this weekend and this year’s event is offering a little extra to get your caboose moving.

For the first time in museum history, an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest Soul Train line dance will take place April 2 during Train Days opening day, and the entire community is invited, said museum director Melissa Russo in a news release.

“Dancing is one of the most joyful, social activities on the planet, and we want to show the rest of the world the joy that represents San Bernardino County,” Russo said in the release.

To participate in the dance, no experience in line dancing or doing the Locomotion is required, organizers said and all ages are encouraged to join in on the fun. Museum staff will begin to organize participants in the Soul Train line around 10:15 a.m., with music promptly starting at 11 a.m. At least 427 participants are needed for the mu-

seum's attempt to break the world record. The previous record, which was set in 2014 at Arizona’s Goodyear Ballpark, included 426 participants.

A special promotion including admission discounts and free Tshirts is being offered to the first 500 particiaptns who commit to helping break the record by making a reservation on the museums website at www.sbcounty.gov/museum.

Participants in the Soul Train Dance can enjoy a 50 percent discount on admission by using the promo code DANCE. Train Days festivities this year have been extended to run for two weekends and will feature exhibits focused on all things train through April 10.

Scheduled to participate are the Antelope Valley N’Scalers (at the Victor Valley Museum), the Backyard Railroad Company, Green River Junction Railroad, High Desert Modular Railroad Club, Orange County Module Railroaders, Orange County ‘N’Gineers, Mark Anthony Circus Trains, Mile Post 535 Club, N-Land Pacific Modular Club, Southern California Traction Club, and ZoCal Z Scale Group.
