an Bernardino Valley College and Crafton Hills College hosted two Community Coffee outreach events at Coffee Nutzz in Rialto last Wednesday and Thursday to inform the community about career training programs, workforce training, business-education

partnership opportunities and transfer pathways.

Rialto Unified School District Boardmember Dina Walker, pictured far right, expressed her excitement over the opportunity for the community to learn about the resources at the community college level, as well as the new

pathways available to RUSD students. “It was a great way to bridge the gap between information and opportunity,” Walker said.

RUSD Superintendent, Dr. Cuauhtémoc Avila was also in attendance representing the school district.

Manny Boy Sandoval and Andrew Caravella host Inland Empire’s first digital trend podcast, WeTube Radio Show sion a run for their money during the past decade, making some wonder if radio or television will soon become obsolete.

T

he WeTube Radio show is one of the first technological and digital trend podcasts in the Inland Empire. It’s hosted by two digital trend and social media loving radio aficionados, Manny Boy Sandoval and Andrew Caravella.

“There are some people that make broad based assessments about broadcasting and its demise that are just plain inaccurate.

Radio is expanding because the general population continues to grow. With growth comes change and adaption and that means incorporating social media,” continued Westwood.

The podcast content consists of interviewing notable digital and social media celebrities, discussing digital news stories and trends, reviewing music and film, laughing at memes and playing ridiculous games on-air.

“The future of entertainment is on the platforms of social media.

That future is already here; it was only a matter of time before a show needed to come around to utilize those platforms,” said Caravella.

The radio podcast debut was in April 2018 and has since continued to thrive.

he Make-A-Wish Foundation is celebrating 35 years of granting critically ill children’s wishes in Orange County, Los Angeles, and Inland Empire. Make-A-Wish is the largest wish-granting organization, fulfilling more than 300,000 wishes in the United States and its territories.

The foundation has been operating since the 1980’s starting by granting the wish of Chris Greicius, a seven-year-old diagnosed with leukemia who wanted to be a police officer. Those responsible for making his wish come true wanted to grant other children’s wishes as well, thus creating the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

As the foundation looks back on the wishes it has granted over the years, Amina Martinez, ten-yearold Ontario resident comes to mind. Martinez was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013, and even while going through chemotherapy she still loved dancing, playing with her dog and especially cooking. Over the months she became weak and ill due to treatment; her mother heard about the Make-A-Wish Foundation through another mother whose child had recently got her to wish granted.

“At the time Amina didn’t really care, she was so sick and grumpy from her treatments but I still put in the application, by the time we went through the interview process she was feeling better,” said Anabel Martinez, Amina’s mother.

To be eligible for a wish a child must have been diagnosed with a Radial retailers. Workers will source orders and send them to their final destinations faster using Radial's technology, fulfillment and transportation solutions.

They also must be older than two-and-a-half but younger than 18 and have never received a wish from another wish-granting organization.

Amina’s wish was to be a chef for a day, she’s had a passion for cooking for years and loves to cook for her family. Her wish was granted in 2014, Thermador Pro Kitchen offered their Event and Design Center to become “Amina’s Café” for the day. This included all their high-end appliances, a chef to help guide Amina while she cooked for her friends and family, and given a personalized chef coat and hat.

“When we went inside the place was amazing, I got my chef coat, they gave me a plan and the chef helped show me what to do,” said Amina. “I got to ice cupcakes and I got a basket filled with cooking supplies. I really love cooking for hind the scenes to ensure every order runs seamlessly," said Sean McCartney, executive vice president, operations services, at Radial. As the night went on Amina was able to sit down and autograph her very own cookbook for her guests, the cookbook contained the recipes that she cooked that evening.

Now, a few years later, Amina still dreams of becoming a chef and opening her own restaurant while also hoping to host her own cooking show on the Food Network.

“Make-A-Wish means a lot to me because at the time I was sick and not able to do much, they helped me become a chef for a day and they’ll never be forgotten because of that,” said Amina.

Amina and her family have continued being involved in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, starring in commercials, YouTube videos, and working towards becoming ambassadors for the foundation.

“The reason why we help is that we want everyone to give back, she was sick once and there are other kids going through the same thing,” said Anabel. “Even something small or volunteering can make all the difference.”

There are many ways to get involved in the Make-A-Wish Foundation through donation, fundraising, and volunteering.

The foundation is especially looking for bilingual and Spanish speaking volunteers for the Inland Empire.

“One of my most favorite guests that came on the show is author and actress Amanda McDonough.

Amanda began losing her hearing at age four and became fully deaf as a junior in college. Her hearing loss was a closely guarded secret among her and her parents.

Through determination and perseverance, Amanda was able to overcome her disability and has become a popular actress, motivational speaker and author as well as a positive role model for the deaf community,” Caravella said.

Caravella said he hopes to interview major viral stars whose videos have reached over 100 million views in the near future.

“These digital and social media stars don't get enough mainstream interviews. In radio and television, the YouTube and Instagram type stars still have a stigma as not being talented and that's totally untrue. They just need the platform and we have it,” said Caravella.

The WeTube Radio Show is unique, diverse and geared toward people of all ages.

“It’s a radio talk show that anyone could understand and it's down-right funny,” concluded Caravella.

he Laguna Dance Festival will award five $1,000 scholarships to Southern California dancers who are pursuing professional dance careers or who plan to study dance in higher education. Dancers ages 15-19 who live in Southern California are invited to apply. The application deadline is Monday, September 10. Recipients may use funds for studio tuition, summer intensive costs, private coaching, or choreography commissions for competition solos. Laguna Dance Festival's selection committee will evaluate candidates on their career potential, technical skill, performance ability, and talent. Financial need will also be considered.

Leave the Deser t plan alone

My fascination with the stories of our ancestors began long before I arrived in the California Desert. A descendant of the Choctaw Indian tribe, I spent my childhood in western Mississippi listening to my grandfather’s stories of generations long before us.

And while the Desert is not my own ancestral homeland, I represented many folks to whom this land is sacred during my time in the State Assembly. I’ve walked my fair share of landscapes that embody people’s stories and values, and continue to do everything I can to help preserve our region’s cultural and historic treasures.

That’s why I’m passionate about protecting the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP), our region’s landmark plan designating which lands are best suited for conservation, and which are appropriate for renewable energy development. Earlier this year, the Trump administration took steps to under-mine this balanced approach when it ordered a review of the DRECP. I’m deeply concerned that this is just a preview of the Administration’s plans to do away with protections for our picturesque landscapes and precious cultural re-sources.

At such a critical time for the Desert, we need our community leaders and elected officials, especially the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, to speak up in support of the DRECP and the importance of this plan to our region’s future. I urge our County Supervisors to call for no changes to the DRECP. By reopening the DRECP the Administration is choosing to ignore tens of thousands of Californians who have been exceedingly clear they don’t want this. Stakeholders worked tirelessly during an eight-year long collaborative process to craft a balanced land use plan that took Native American culture, recreation, and historic values into account. The result was a historic compromise that incorporated a range of interests and values, and provided a blueprint for the future of our Desert lands. I can’t understand

why the DOI would explore changing the current plan when its development was such an extensive and comprehensive process to begin with.

When the Interior Department announced their plans to reopen the DRECP to potential changes, tens of thousands of Californians pushed back. They stated loud and clear during the Administration’s public comment period that they wanted the DRECP left alone, their broad support reaffirming that the plan’s advocates come from all walks of life. With interests ranging from outdoor recreation and conservation of desert landscapes, to mining, grazing, and the development of renewable energy, these folks persisted in making their voices heard despite a profound lack of an open public process.

The fact that the Administration is still pursuing this process shows just how far it’ll go to drown out the voices of the people.

I’m concerned for the future of historic and cultural treasures like Juniper Flats, Pipes Canyon, Alligator Rock and Corn Springs, some of the most precious and important cultural sites in the California Desert.

Also threatened by the Administration’s proposed change to the DRECP are historic sites like the Bradshaw Trail, the Desert Training Center, and the Old Spanish Trail. These rare Desert gems tell the stories of the first European explorers, the California gold rush, and our country’s engagement in World War II. If we don’t have a balanced plan in place to protect these special places, we risk the tragedy of their stories falling silent.

You can count me in among the Desert residents who won’t take this attack lying down, and I urge the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to make their voices heard as well.

The Administration may work to silence our stories, but we won’t silence our voices until they leave our Desert plan alone.

At risk for hepatitis? Medicar e can help

id you know viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver, causes more than 1 million deaths per year worldwide? That’s about the same number of deaths caused by tuberculosis and HIV combined.

Fortunately, Medicare can help protect you from Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, the most common types of viral hepatitis in the United States.

Hepatitis is contagious. The Hepatitis B virus, for example, spreads through contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person. People can also get infected by coming in contact with a contaminated object, where the virus can live for up to 7 days.

Hepatitis B can range from being a mild illness, lasting a few weeks (acute), to a serious longterm illness (chronic) that can lead to liver disease or liver cancer.

Medicare Part B covers Hepatitis B shots, which usually are given as a series of 3 shots over a 6-month period. You need all 3 shots for complete protection.

Medicare covers these shots for people at medium or high risk for Hepatitis B. Risk factors include hemophilia, end-stage renal disease, diabetes, if you live with someone who has Hepatitis B, or if you’re a health care worker and have frequent contact with blood

or body fluids. Check with your doctor to see if you’re at medium or high risk for Hepatitis B. You pay nothing for Hepatitis B shots if your doctor or other qualified health care provider accepts Medicare payment.

Medicare also covers a onetime Hepatitis C screening test if your primary care doctor or practitioner orders it and you meet one of these conditions: • You’re at high risk because you have a current or past history of illicit injection-drug use; • You had a blood transfusion before 1992; • You were born between 1945 and 1965.

Medicare also covers yearly repeat screenings for certain people at high risk.

Medicare will only cover Hepatitis C screening tests if they’re ordered by a primary-care doctor or other primary-care provider.

You pay nothing for the screening test if the doctor or other qualified health care provider accepts Medicare payment.

Hepatitis shots and screening are among the many preventivehealth services that Medicare helps pay for. These screenings and tests help detect preventable and chronic diseases early, in their most treatable stages.

Here are some other preventivehealth measures Medicare covers: • Alcohol misuse screening and counseling; • Bone mass measurement (This test checks whether you’re at risk for broken bones);

• Breast cancer screening (mammograms): • Cardiovascular disease screening (This includes blood tests that help detect conditions that may lead to a heart attack or stroke); • Cervical and vaginal cancer screening; • Colorectal cancer screening (This helps find precancerous growths or cancer early, when treatment is most effective); • Diabetes screening and diabetes self-management training; • Flu and pneumococcal shots; • Glaucoma tests; • HIV screening; • Lung cancer screening; • Obesity screening and counseling; • Prostate cancer screening; • Smoking and tobacco use cessation counseling (to help you stop smoking or using tobacco products).

You pay nothing for most Medicare-covered preventive services if you get the services from a doctor or other qualified health care provider who accepts Medicare payment.

However, for some preventive services, you may have to pay a deductible, coinsurance, or both.

These costs may also apply if you get a preventive service in the same visit as a non-preventive service.

t’s that time of the year yet again! Another NBA season is upon us and with the preseason and regular season right around the corner, it’s time to get an idea of what we are gonna see for each conference this year.

We start in the East where a lot has changed, and by a lot I mean LeBron James is now in the West.

Which means the East is up for grabs and there are a few huge contenders. First off the Celtics, led by Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward returning from that gruesome injury, this team is stacked and ready to make a deep run. The Raptors, led by traded for Kawhi Leonard are also hot contenders along with the Wizards, who keep John Wall and Bradley Beal and are hungry for a championship.

However, no one is going to stop the Celtics. With the deep roster and motivated players they have, they will easily feast through the East and go for an 18th championship in the finals.

Next, the West. The story of the offseason LeBron James is a Laker, adding yet another team in the mix. With that, the Lakers will still have to compete with the unbeatable Golden State Warriors who, of course, added another all star on a minimum contract in Demarcus Cousins to the Raptors. I see these 2 teams competing with each other, but even LeBron can’t stop the Warriors, as Golden State heads to yet another finals appearance to face the Celtics.

Finally, with the Larry O’Brien trophy up for grabs, I see the Warriors completing the 3peat and winning another title, beating the Celtics in 6 games. If this happens, will the Warriors officially be the greatest team ever? Or will something else happen that somehow stuns the basketball world and has somebody else holding up the trophy? For the answer, we will have to wait and see how it plays out this season.

Inland Center celebrates 20 year s of School Cents program

S

chool Cents is celebrating 20 years of helping schools to purchase supplies with its sponsor Macy’s San Bernardino! The program, which supports 20 local elementary schools each year, will launch this Saturday (September 1, 2018) and will run through June 30, 2019.

Participating schools are rewarded when receipts are submitted from stores and restaurants located at Inland Center Mall, plus receive bonus points for participation in mall sponsored community events.

Inland Center Mall has contributed over $215,400 to local elementary schools through this program.

The 2018-19 program will contribute an additional $11,350 to local schools at an awards ceremony in June 2019. The First Place winner will receive $2,000 and remaining schools will earn based on performance with a minimum award of $250.

“We’re are so excited to continue the mall’s School Cents program which is now in its 20th year with our sponsor Macy’s San Bernardino. This program helps local schools with much needed funding for supplies and student

Canvassing for dog licensing to begin Middle, high school students invited to compete in in Running Springs ar ea

an Bernardino County Animal Care and Control will begin a door-to-door canvass Wednesday, September 5th, of neighborhoods in the communities of Running Springs, Green Valley Lake, and Arrowbear to ensure that all dogs have current licenses and rabies vaccinations.

All dogs in the unincorporated areas of San Bernardino County are required by law to be licensed and vaccinated at four months of age. A license also identifies the owner and allows them to be quickly reunited with their pet in case they ever get lost.

Pet owners can prepare by having current pet licenses, vaccination records, and spay/neuter certificates available to avoid possible citations. Owners of unlicensed dogs may obtain a license

before visits from animal license checkers.

Aguilar’s app competition

ep. Pete Aguilar (D-San Bernardino) announced that his office will participate in the Congressional App Challenge (CAC). The CAC is an annual competition open to middle and high school students throughout the country. Students create original software applications, or “apps,” to compete against other students in their respective Congressional Districts. The winner for California’s 31st Congressional District will be selected by a panel of local experts from the Inland Empire. The winning app is eligible to be displayed in the Capitol Building and to be featured on Rep. Aguilar's website.

The winning student will be invited to the #HouseofCode Reception in Washington, DC.

CHC Foundation announces new board leader ship, member s

he Crafton Hills College Foundation’s executive board has some change in leadership heading into the 201819 fiscal year.

Redlands-based attorney Bill Nassar will assume the role of president, while immediate past president Sam Irwin is the governing board’s newest vice president, and Col. David Raley will continue to fill the past president role.

Composed of community volunteers, board members make a three-year commitment to support the cause with new officers elected each June for a one-year term, said Michelle Riggs, the foundation’s development director, by email.

The foundation’s mission is to enhance educational excellence at Crafton Hills through various means, including the awarding of scholarships to deserving students and the funding of campus improvement projects.

Rounding out the board’s officers are Dr. Rebeccah WarrenMarlatt (secretary) and Mike Strong (chief financial officer).

In addition to the new leadership roles, the governing board welcomes two new members aboard – Rosaura Parsons and Barbara Smith – a move that helps strengthen both the foundation’s board and executive team, said Riggs.

Students teach kids how to mana ge Type 1 diabetes at Camp Conrad Chinnock

T

his summer — and every summer since 2013 — students from Loma Linda University School of Pharmacy dedicated several days of their summer break volunteering at Camp Conrad Chinnock.

A comprehensive educational program located in Angelus Oaks, California, Camp Conrad Chinnock provides training to kids ages 7 to 12 with Type 1 diabetes and their families by teaching them how to manage their medication, eat properly and integrate physical activity into their lifestyle.

Kaitlyn Phumirat, a third year student at the School of Pharmacy, was one of 22 students volunteering at Camp Chinnock this summer. She said her experience was eye-opening.

“It was impressive to watch these kids work their pump devices, change their pump site injections, test their blood glucose, and calculate how much insulin they need to cover their carbohydrates intake really well at such a young age,” said Phumirat, who would have to wake up with kids in the middle of the night to check their glucose and tend to any specific needs the kids may have.

Diabetic children aren’t typically able to experience summer camp because diabetes has to be so closely monitored. “Diabetes management is tough,” Phumirat said. “While at camp I realized how much diabetes affects one’s sleep cycle, physical activity, and so much of one’s everyday life.”

Campers sleep in cabins, make new friends, learn archery, fish, swim, hike, and take turns cleaning the mess hall after meals.

The camp was started in 1957 by Robert Chinnock, MD, a Loma Linda University Health pediatrician. His son, Richard Chinnock, MD and grandson Timothy Chinnock, MD, both pediatricians, continue to support and participate in the camp today.

The camp is a safe haven to kids with diabetes, says Nancy Kawahara, PharmD, associate dean for professional affairs and community engagement at Loma Linda School of Pharmacy.

In 2008, Kawahara’s son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes — he was 11. That year, his endocrinologist encouraged him to attend the camp, which he did every summer through high school.

“Camp Conrad Chinnock was a

place where everyone understood him, and he cherished the time he had there,” Kawahara said of her son’s experience.

The summer of her son’s junior year of high school, Kawahara dropped her son off at the teen camp while she, along with four students from the School of Pharmacy, spent six days at a session with younger children. Kawahara and the students participated in various recreational activities and educational sessions to help kids with insulin-dependent diabetes.

ARMC to host free cancer screenings

A

rrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) is offering free screenings for breast, colorectal and cervical cancers on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., with screenings beginning at 9 a.m. and concluding at 1 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to come early, as only the first 200 registrants can be screened.

Simple and painless cancer screenings are an effective means of finding cancer in early and curable stages resulting in higher sur-

vival rates and fewer side effects from treatment. There will also be informational booths at the screening event offering cancer prevention and educational information.

Entry to the event will be through the main hospital lobby, and registration will take place at the Outpatient Care Center, located at 400 North Pepper Avenue in Colton. Parking is free. Manny Boy Sandoval and Andrew Caravella host Inland Empire’s first digital trend podcast, WeTube Radio Show sion a run for their money during the past decade, making some wonder if radio or television will soon become obsolete.

he WeTube Radio show is one of the first technological and digital trend podcasts in the Inland Empire. It’s hosted by two digital trend and social media loving radio aficionados, Manny Boy Sandoval and Andrew Caravella.

“There are some people that make broad based assessments about broadcasting and its demise that are just plain inaccurate.

Radio is expanding because the general population continues to grow. With growth comes change and adaption and that means incorporating social media,” continued Westwood.

The podcast content consists of interviewing notable digital and social media celebrities, discussing digital news stories and trends, reviewing music and film, laughing at memes and playing ridiculous games on-air.

“The future of entertainment is on the platforms of social media.

That future is already here; it was only a matter of time before a show needed to come around to utilize those platforms,” said Caravella.

The radio podcast debut was in April 2018 and has since continued to thrive.

he Make-A-Wish Foundation is celebrating 35 years of granting critically ill children’s wishes in Orange County, Los Angeles, and Inland Empire. Make-A-Wish is the largest wish-granting organization, fulfilling more than 300,000 wishes in the United States and its territories.

The foundation has been operating since the 1980’s starting by granting the wish of Chris Greicius, a seven-year-old diagnosed with leukemia who wanted to be a police officer. Those responsible for making his wish come true wanted to grant other children’s wishes as well, thus creating the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

As the foundation looks back on the wishes it has granted over the years, Amina Martinez, ten-yearold Ontario resident comes to mind. Martinez was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013, and even while going through chemotherapy she still loved dancing, playing with her dog and especially cooking. Over the months she became weak and ill due to treatment; her mother heard about the Make-A-Wish Foundation through another mother whose child had recently got her to wish granted.

“At the time Amina didn’t really care, she was so sick and grumpy from her treatments but I still put in the application, by the time we went through the interview process she was feeling better,” said Anabel Martinez, Amina’s mother.

They also must be older than two-and-a-half but younger than 18 and have never received a wish from another wish-granting organization.

Amina’s wish was to be a chef for a day, she’s had a passion for cooking for years and loves to cook for her family. Her wish was granted in 2014, Thermador Pro Kitchen offered their Event and Design Center to become “Amina’s Café” for the day. This included all their high-end appliances, a chef to help guide Amina while she cooked for her friends and family, and given a personalized chef coat and hat.

“When we went inside the place was amazing, I got my chef coat, they gave me a plan and the chef helped show me what to do,” said Amina. “I got to ice cupcakes and I got a basket filled with cooking supplies. I really love cooking for hind the scenes to ensure every order runs seamlessly," said Sean McCartney, executive vice president, operations services, at Radial. Amina served her family and friends shrimp, vegetables and steak, and cupcakes for dessert.

As the night went on Amina was able to sit down and autograph her very own cookbook for her guests, the cookbook contained the recipes that she cooked that evening.

Now, a few years later, Amina still dreams of becoming a chef and opening her own restaurant while also hoping to host her own cooking show on the Food Network.

“Make-A-Wish means a lot to me because at the time I was sick and not able to do much, they helped me become a chef for a day and they’ll never be forgotten because of that,” said Amina.

Amina and her family have continued being involved in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, starring in commercials, YouTube videos, and working towards becoming ambassadors for the foundation.

“The reason why we help is that we want everyone to give back, she was sick once and there are other kids going through the same thing,” said Anabel. “Even something small or volunteering can make all the difference.”

There are many ways to get involved in the Make-A-Wish Foundation through donation, fundraising, and volunteering.

The foundation is especially looking for bilingual and Spanish speaking volunteers for the Inland Empire.

Through determination and perseverance, Amanda was able to overcome her disability and has become a popular actress, motivational speaker and author as well as a positive role model for the deaf community,” Caravella said.

“YouTube changed the face of the earth and how the public views videos. Consumption of media will forever be changed.

Entertainment is now viewed on the viewer’s time. The viewer is given more freedom to find and discover what they want. Networks and big corporations can't tell viewers what and when they are going to watch content,” explained Caravella.

Caravella said he hopes to interview major viral stars whose videos have reached over 100 million views in the near future.

“These digital and social media stars don't get enough mainstream interviews. In radio and television, the YouTube and Instagram type stars still have a stigma as not being talented and that's totally untrue. They just need the platform and we have it,” said Caravella.

The WeTube Radio Show is unique, diverse and geared toward people of all ages.

“It’s a radio talk show that anyone could understand and it's down-right funny,” concluded Caravella.
