ith the school year in full swing, the Rialto Unified School District is offering several events to get students, families, and the com-

munity engaged.

The events held through the beginning of November range from festive to informative and RUSD families and the community are encouraged to participate. First up, the stu-

dents and families are encouraged to participate in two college fairs happening at the Ontario Convention Center, located at 2000 E. Convention Center Way in Ontario, Calif., on Thursday, September 22.

First is the U-CAN

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Recruitment Fair, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fair is open to junior and senior students. The event, now in its 23rd year, is presented by United College

n Saturday, September 17th, the Institute of Media Arts (IMA) held its Inland Empire 48 Hour Film Project Filmmaker Conference, which provided filmmakers from across the region with the tools, resources and confidence they need to turn their filmmaker dreams into a reality.

San Bernardino Valley College’s Institute of Media Arts is affiliated with the college’s Film, Television, and Media department (FTVM), which provides students and IMA, cont. on next pg.

More than 35 HBCUs will be present on-site to assist students and on-the-spot admissions, scholarships, and fee waivers are available for most colleges.

Seniors must have an electronic copy of their current transcript and SAT/ACT scores (if available). Juniors should have an electronic copy of their transcript. Documents can be uploaded and shared with recruiters.

Later that day, the Regional College & Career Fair takes place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., also at the Ontario Convention Center.

This free event is open to students, and their families, from fourth grade and above as they get a chance to meet with recruiters, get college information, and plan for the future.

Students and families will have the opportunity to interact with California State and University of California schools as well as trade schools and community colleges. Anyone interested in attending can register online at https://tinyurl.com/yd6smm5k.

Unified School District.

Festival Latino

Families are encouraged to attend the inaugural Festival Latino from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 24 at the Cesar Chavez/Dolores Huerta Center for Education, located at 324 North Palm Ave., Rialto, CA 92335. Alianza Latina, a family group that positively impacts students in the RUSD is hosting the event. There will be food, games, prizes, and a festive school parade as the Rialto Unified School District celebrates Latino heritage and Hispanic Heritage month, which runs from September 15 to October 15. Social Media/Safety Family Forum

The Rialto Unified School District will hold a forum to cover student safety on social media and beyond on Tuesday, October 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the RUSD Cafe Bistro (324 North Palm Ave., Rialto, CA 92376).

The forum will cover safety and student behavior supports,

Book Mania

The RUSD will hold Book Mania, a celebration of literacy, on October 28 at elementary schools across the District.

The school day will be filled with dress-up, guest readers, student writing, fun activities, and much more. Students are encouraged to join in the festivities and dress up as their favorite book characters.

Dia de los Muertos

The RUSD's popular Dia de los Muertos celebration returns on November 2. The event will be held at the Cesar Chavez/Dolores Huerta Center for Education, located at 324 North Palm Ave., Rialto, CA 92335, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The conference held four different panels, which featured experienced 48 Hour Film project who’ve been participants awarded for their short films, Inland Empire Film Services, and That 70’s Show Editor Michael Karlich.

“The one thing about Netflix and any of these streaming services is that when you were on the network, you knew your ratings.

Netflix is freaking geniuses because it will not disclose anything. You have no clue if you are a blockbuster hit; they will not tell you,” said Karlich.

“Think about it, if I’m an actor and I know that I have Netflix over a barrel and we’re their best show in many years, you can say double my salary, or I’m not going to do it. But Netflix will not divulge anything,” Continued Karlich.

During his panel discussion with Director of IMA Lucas Cuny, he shared his career journey and gave some simple but

practical advice.

“Hard work never gets old and hard work rarely gets unnoticed.

It’s not necessary to know exactly what you want to do when you're first starting the business because there are many avenues to making a living in it. But know that everyone knows everyone, so work hard,” concluded karlich.

Inland Empire 48-Hour Film Project Producer Kevin Lyons also reminded attendees of the forthcoming Audition Event on Saturday, September 24th.

“I want to remind everyone that we’re hosting an Audition Event for the Inland Empire 48-Hour Film Project here at San Bernardino Valley College in MC-142 next Saturday, September 24th. This is a great opportunity for you to scout for actors, audition to star in a short film, network and even join a team,” said Lyons.

n September 15th, the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, San Bernardino County Superior Court Judge John Pacheco coordinated a reenactment of the iconic Lopez V. Seccombe case, desegregating recreational facilities in San Bernardino in 1944.

The case was brought forth after three MexicanAmerican boys between the ages of 13-16 were refused entry into the Perris Hill Plunge due to their ethnicity.

At the reenactment, Brown University Professor Mark Ocegueda introduced the case to an audience filled with dignitaries and students from high schools across the inland empire.

“The three boys were stopped as they were entering the Perris Hill Plunge and asked if they were Mexican. They were turned away because Mexicans were only allowed to enter the day before the water was drained,” said Ocegueda.

Ultimately, the Constitution’s fifth and 14th amendments helped Judge Leon Yankwich reach a ruling and desegregate recreational facilities.

“This case set a precedent for other local desegregation issues, including the Mendez v. Westminster decision in 1947 and the Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education in 1954,” said Pacheco.

At the reenactment, students from San Bernardino, Rialto, Redlands, Yucaipa, and the High Desert snacked on tacos, taquitos, chips, salsa and guacamole - while listening to the arguments made by the jury.

Mayor John Valdivia played former San Bernardino Mayor William Seccombe. In contrast, Michael Scaffidi played attorney H.R. Griffith; Judge Manuel Ramirez played the role of Judge Leon Yankwich and Michael Bidart as attorney David C. Marcus.

During the arguments, the city officials argued that Mexicans were too dirty, carried diseases, and dressed inappropriately.

Lawyer David C. Marcus argued that the city official’s arguments amounted to discrimination, and a ruling was made.

The 200-plus attendees included Assembly Majority Leader Eloise Gomez Reyes, San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustee Chair Gloria Macias Harrison, and KVCR - who recorded interviews with the lawyers and judges on the dais.

Inland Empire Community News and KVCR have recently collaborated and will release exclusive interviews to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month in the coming weeks.

Richardson PREP HI ear ns its third National Blue Ribbon Award

an Bernardino City Unified School District’s (SBCUSD’s) most distinguished school has earned yet another award.

Richardson PREP HI Middle School was named a 2022 National Blue Ribbon School, having previously earned the distinction in 2009 and 2016.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes schools based on their overall acaperformance or demic progress in closing the achievement gap among student subgroups.

This year, just 297 schools nationwide, including private schools, and just 29 California schools, received the National Blue Ribbon Award. Nationwide, only 30 were middle schools.

“I am so proud to serve and be part of Richardson’s legacy of success for students, staff, and the school as a whole,” said Richardson Principal Jenny Vetere. “Our Tiger teachers and staff work so hard each and every day to support and grow our students. Of course, I recognize the support and vision of our Board of Education, the support of SBCUSD administration, the Richardson leaders who came before me, and our amazing students and their families have all played integral parts in our continued success and excellence”

Richardson PREP HI was specifically designated an Exemplary High-Performing School for being among California’s highest-performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

The National Blue Ribbon is just one of several awards Richardson has earned, including the California Distinguished School Award, the Title I Academic Achievement Award, and the National ESEA Distinguished School Program.

Most schools are nominated for a National Blue Ribbon School award by their state’s top education official or the Council for American Private Education.

Schools are not allowed to nominate themselves for a National Blue Ribbon.

BLU has worked with local communities since 1996 to help students with limited resources and opportunities receive the assistance and opportunities to complete high school and further their educations while also helping them find internships and develop leadership and workforce skills.

The mission of BLU’s College Exodus Project is to help students get their undergraduate or graduate degrees from accredited colleges and universities.

BLU’s goal is that those in the project will contribute to the Inland Empire economy through entrepreneurship, employment, and/or volunteer service.

BLU provides comprehensive college information, assistance, and support to help students with admissions, financial aid, retention, and graduation from public and private institutions throughout the country.

ssemblymember James C. Ramos (DHighland) today presented a symbolic check of $5 million to BLU Educational Services/ Foundation to expand the organization’s College Exodus Project aimed at helping at-risk students attend and graduate from college.

He presented the check to Chief Executive Officer Dina Walker as well as BLU students. Ramos worked to help secure the funding in the 202223 state budget.
