CSUSB Names S. Terri Gomez as New University President

The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees has appointed S. Terri Gomez to serve as president of California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB). Gomez currently serves as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Cal Poly Pomona.
“As a first-generation college graduate and a lifelong resident of the Inland Empire, I am honored to be named Cal State San Bernardino’s president,” Gomez said. “CSUSB is a university of access, talent and possibility, and its success matters profoundly to the Inland Empire, the High Desert and the Coachella Valley. I am excited by the opportunity to lead –alongside CSUSB’s dedicated and talented faculty and staff – a university that serves the communities that have shaped me and honors the values that have guided my career.”

- turnout reflected both the public’s concern about the course and its willingness to help revive it.
“We sold out,” Knaus said. “We had to rent golf carts because there were not enough to accommodate all the golfers.”
The fundraiser was organized through the Shandin Hills Golf Project with support from Knaus, We Are The Change San Bernardino, the Blair Park Neighborhood Association and the Verdemont Revitalization Project. Councilmembers Theodore Sanchez and Fred Shorett also participated in the tournament.
Knaus said the campaign generated about $50,000 within 45 days, including tournament proceeds and a $25,000 in-kind donation from Jason Valenzuela of UCC Fence. Valenzuela, a former Cajon High School golfer, donated labor and materials to replace approximately 600 feet of deteriorated fencing near the course entrance.
“That fence was literally dilapidated and falling down,” Knaus said. “He had his team out here, and within two days, we did the fencing.”
Knaus credited residents, neighborhood organizations and businesses with bringing the fundraiser together so quickly.
“This is a community-led effort,” she said. “It really shows what can be done when we choose to unite. We move mountains.”
The fundraiser followed growing public frustration over the condition of the city-owned course. More than a dozen residents addressed the San Bernardino City Council on June 3, urging officials to give the property greater attention. At the same meeting, the council recognized the Cajon High School boys and girls golf teams and approved repairs to the course’s driving range netting.
Residents noted the contrast between honoring successful student golfers and the deteriorated condition of the neighborhood course where they could otherwise practice.
Knaus said the property needs extensive work, including repairs to its roof and banquet hall, replacement of outdated irrigation and improvements to the exterior. The banquet facility is currently redtagged and closed, she said, although the golf course remains open daily.

A first-generation college student, Gomez began her higher education journey at San Bernardino Valley College before transferring to UCLA, where she earned her bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in political science.
Gomez will assume the university presidency on Aug. 3, 2026.
“This golf course needs a lot of work,” Knaus said. “It just needs some TLC`. When you look at the facade, you’ll see the wood rot. We need to give it a little bit of a facelift.”
For Knaus, the course also carries personal significance. She said she took golf lessons there when she was 8 and remembers a busier, greener facility. Unlike nearby private clubs, she said, Shandin Hills became a place where the wider community could play, celebrate milestones and gather.
“This was a golf course where everyone was welcome,” Knaus said.
She said residents have memories connected to the property dating back decades, including weddings, birthday celebrations and childhood golf lessons.
Loida Crestville of the Blair Park Neighborhood Association said the fundraiser gave residents a direct role in protecting an important neighborhood asset.
“We love our golf course,” Crestville said. “We want to keep it. We want to revitalize it and do anything that we can to make that happen for our community.”
Crestville described the course as a neighborhood “gem” valued even by residents who do not play golf.
Lilia Garcia, a Blair Park resident and real estate agent with Dynasty Real Estate, said the course influenced her decision to live in the area and remains tied to the neighborhood’s identity and property values.
The community picnic included a food truck from Jovi’s Diner and booths from the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System, Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement and Rep. Pete Aguilar’s office, among others.
Knaus said the golfers represented only part of the turnout, with residents, vendors and community groups contributing to an atmosphere the course had not experienced in years. “We haven’t seen this much activity on this golf course in years,” Knaus said.
Organizers plan to make the revival classic an annual event. Contributions to the restoration campaign can be made through the Shandin Hills Golf Project website. Shandin Hills Golf Club is located at 3380 Little Mountain Drive in San Bernardino. The course is open daily from 6 AM to 5:30 PM.

The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra announced upcoming auditions for its youth orchestra programs for the 2026 season.
Music director Anthony Parnther started the dual-ensemble program a year ago, which features both flagship Youth Orchestra and the newer Overture Orchestra for middle school students. The program includes intensive rehearsals, professional mentorship from SBSO musicians, and acclaimed public performances, according to the symphony.
“We are exceptionally proud of our Inland Empire youth,” Lucy Lewis, director of the program and Orchestral Studies as CSU San Bernardino said. “Having completed our first full year of operating two youth orchestras, we have seen firsthand how this creative space challenges and inspires motivated young musicians to the highest standards of musicmaking and professionalism. We are excited to welcome re-
turning and new talent into this nurturing environment.”
Placement in the San Bernardino Symphony Youth Orchestra programs will be determined by upcoming auditions to be held Aug. 19-31 and Sept. 2, 4:30-8:30 p.m. Audition signs are required at least 24 hours in advance and must be completed online through the symphony’s website.
“Watching our younger students blossom over this past year has been an absolute joy,” Susan Barnes, leader of the Overture Orchestra said. “The Overture Orchestra provides the vital musical stepping stones these musicians need, fostering teamwork, confidence, and a lifelong love for orchestral music. We cannot wait to welcome a new cohort of young players into our musical family.”

According to the symphony, auditioners must prepare:
A two-to-three-octave scale (according to instrument range) and arpeggio in the key of the student’s choosing.
One solo piece or excerpt that best represents their current playing level. (Music from the student’s school ensemble may be used if necessary.)
Sight-reading (to be provided during the live audition).
Following auditions, accepted students will attend a mandatory orientation Sept. 13, 2-5 p.m. Weekly rehearsals for both orchestras will take place on Sundays, with the first rehearsal occurring Sept. 20. The Youth Orchestra rehearses from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and the Overture Orchestra rehearses from 3-4:30 p.m. A complete schedule of rehearsals for the year can be found here.

Colton Police Investigate Attempted Murder After Woman Shot Multiple Times, Suspect Hospitalized

A48-year-old woman remained in critical but stable condition after she was shot multiple times Thursday morning in Colton, police said.
Colton Police Department officers responded to the 1400 block of North Bordwell Avenue at approximately 8:57 a.m. following reports of gunfire and a woman screaming. Officers found the woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and an adult man with a gunshot wound to the head.
Officers provided lifesaving aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Both individuals were transported to local trauma centers.
Police identified the man as Kenneth
Eric McCovery, 45, of Colton, and described him as the suspect in the attempted murder investigation. McCovery sustained life-threatening injuries, police said.
Detectives believe the shooting was an isolated incident involving two people who were in a personal relationship. The investigation remains active, and police did not release additional information about the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

Man Dies After Being Struck by Arrow Train in Redlands; Police Investigate Probable Suicide

An unidentified man died Sunday night after he was struck by an Arrow passenger train in Redlands, police said.
Redlands police and firefighter-paramedics responded shortly before 10 p.m. July 26 to the Metrolink tracks west of Texas Street.
According to police, the train’s conductor reported that the man entered the path of the eastbound train after it departed the Esri station.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. No passengers or train crew members were injured.
Police are investigating the death as a probable suicide. The investigation remains ongoing, and the man’s identity has not been released.

Riverside Man Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run That Killed Kaiser Employee

A62-year-old Riverside man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a Kaiser employee crossing Magnolia Avenue, police said.
Riverside Police Department officers attempted to stop a vehicle near Magnolia and La Sierra avenues at approximately 11:40 a.m. Monday, July 27.
The driver initially stopped but sped away as officers approached the vehicle on foot, according to police. The vehicle traveled east on Magnolia Avenue at a high rate of speed before striking a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk at Park Sierra Avenue.
Officers who witnessed the collision stopped and provided aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. The pedestrian, identified only as a 42-year-old Riverside resident, died from their injuries.
The Riverside Police Department’s
Major Accident Investigation Team and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau responded to investigate.
Investigators identified the driver as Gene Amos Cunningham of Riverside. Officers assigned to the department’s METRO Team located and arrested Cunningham on Tuesday, July 28.
Cunningham was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on suspicion of murder and felony hit-and-run resulting in death. He was being held without bail.
Police said Cunningham had two outstanding felony warrants and was on California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation parole for assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities also said he has prior convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm and resisting arrest.

County Reports Two Cyclosporiasis Cases, Urges Residents to Follow Food Safety Precautions

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health is encouraging residents to take steps to help prevent cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. There have been two cases in San Bernardino County this year; however, public health officials have not identified any outbreaks or clusters in the county.
Cyclospora spreads when people eat food or drink water contaminated with feces that contains the parasite. A total of 4,173 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since May 1, and thousands of additional cases requiring further analysis have been reported across 41 states among individuals who became ill after eating contaminated food. However, the actual number may be higher because only cases reported to the CDC are included. Due to the delay between when symptoms start and when cases are reported, many individuals recover without seeking medical care.
Symptoms of cyclosporiasis usually begin one to two weeks after ingesting contaminated food or water and can include:
Prolonged watery diarrhea
Stomach cramps
Fatigue
Nausea
Loss of appetite
Weight loss
Bloating
Vomiting
Low-grade fever
Not everyone infected with cyclospora will experience symptoms. If you are experiencing symptoms, please contact your health care provider. Cyclosporiasis is treatable with antibiotics. If left untreated, symptoms may last from several days to weeks. Some symptoms, such as diarrhea, may go away temporarily but return later. Individuals experiencing frequent diarrhea should drink plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration.
Cyclosporiasis is not usually a lifethreatening illness, and most infected
individuals recover without treatment. However, some individuals may be at higher risk of severe illness, including:
People with a weakened immune system (HIV/AIDS, cancer, etc.)
People with pre-existing medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease, etc.)
People living or traveling in tropical or subtropical regions
The best way to help prevent cyclosporiasis is to avoid consuming food or water that may be contaminated with feces and follow these food safety guidelines:
Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after preparing food, especially fresh produce, and after using the restroom. Wash utensils and surfaces, such as cutting boards and countertops, after preparing each food item to help prevent cross-contamination.
Thoroughly rinse all fruits and vegetables with water before eating, cutting or cooking them.
For lettuce and other salad greens:
Purchase whole heads of lettuce instead of prewashed, bagged lettuce or pre-mixed salad kits.
Before preparation, remove and discard the outer two to three layers of leaves.
Thoroughly wash the remaining inner leaves under clean running water. Do not soak.
When preparing greens and produce that can be heated, cook to an internal temperature of at least 158°F (70°C).
The parasite is resistant to routine chemical disinfection, and washing alone cannot guarantee its removal. Cook food thoroughly and store it at safe temperatures.
If working as a food retailer, ensure that staff are following food safety handling practices to prevent foodborne illness.

More than 600 nonprofit representatives, policymakers, funders and civic leaders are expected to gather in Riverside for the Inland Empire Community Foundation’s annual Policy & Philanthropy Summit on Aug. 6.
The event, titled “All Together,” will be held at the Riverside Convention Center and focus on the policies, partnerships and regional systems affecting communities across Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
Sessions will examine the local effects of federal policy changes involving H.R. 1, immigration enforcement, housing, climate and health care. Attendees will also participate in discussions and breakout sessions focused on developing collaborative responses to challenges facing the Inland Empire.
Scheduled speakers include California Health and Human Services Secretary Kim Johnson; California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot; Kresge Foundation President and CEO Rip Rapson; IECF Board Chair Jesse Melgar; California Endowment Chief Strategy Officer Carolyn Wang Kong; and IECF President and CEO Michelle Decker.
Rapson will participate in a featured fireside chat examining equitable development, climate resilience, health, arts and culture, and philanthropy’s role in strengthening communities. He has spent decades working on national philanthropic and community development initiatives.

Riverside Requires 24-Hour Notice Before Organizations Transport Unhoused People Into City, Sets Penalties
he City of Riverside has begun requiring advanced notice from organizations that plan to transport an unhoused person into the city limits so that necessary arrangements can be made before someone is dropped off, not after.
A new ordinance applies to organizations transporting into the City of Riverside any individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence. The measure is designed to ensure continuity of care, protect public health and safety, and responsibly manage limited municipal resources.
First time offenders will receive a warning, and second time offenders will receive an administrative citation, which could include an administrative hearing and appeal procedures. The City would retain the right to pursue
civil remedies to collect unpaid administrative fines.
The written notice may be submitted through a website form. Once completed, the form will provide notification to the City Manager and the Director of Housing and Human Services. Notifications must be received at least 24 hours prior to the drop-off, which must occur during normal business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) to allow city staff and service providers to coordinate shelter placement, behavioral health services, and housing navigation. “Ensuring an unhoused person has the best chance at success requires coordination of services, and that is made infinitely more difficult when an individual is brought to our city in a haphazard way,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said. “Riverside is committed to assisting unhoused people living in our city on the path to self-reliance, and this ordinance will give us the best opportunity to do that.”
The system will allow the City to identify the place of origin of individuals transported into Riverside; improve coordination with service providers to reduce the likelihood that individuals are released into unsheltered conditions; facilitate interjurisdictional dialogue regarding
shared responsibility and funding; and ensure that limited city shelter and outreach resources are managed effectively.
The ordinance regulates institutional transportation practices and does not restrict an individual’s right to travel or relocate. It does not criminalize homelessness and does not prohibit charitable acts or basic survival assistance as outlined in Government Code section 53069.44.
The ordinance recognizes that, despite significant state and local investments, the supply of emergency shelter beds and affordable housing remains insufficient to meet demand. The 2025 Point-in-Time Count administered by the Riverside County Continuum of Care identified 614 individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness within the City of Riverside.
The City of Riverside has made substantial investments through its Homelessness Action Plan, expansion of shelter capacity, housing navigation services, and coordinated outreach efforts conducted by the Public Safety and Engagement Team (PSET). The city also partners extensively with nonprofit service providers and Riverside County agencies to deliver shelter, recuperative care, behavioral health services, and permanent housing placement. More than 50 residents filled the Highland Planning Commission meeting July 21 to oppose three-year extensions for two proposed warehouse projects near homes, schools and neighborhoods already affected by truck traffic.
After more than 20 people spoke, commissioners voted unanimously to extend Conditional Use Permits 23-003 and 22-011 for the proposed Patriot Partners developments. The projects would include warehouses of approximately 53,665 square feet and 47,889 square feet near Indian Springs High School and a Head Start program in an area serving more than 1,700 students.
Residents told commissioners the decision was not simply about extending permit deadlines. They said it could bring additional diesel emissions, heavy-truck traffic, roadway damage, noise and safety risks to neighborhoods where basic infrastructure needs remain unresolved.
Janet Seaton, a Highland resident of 49 years, said the proposals represent the first major development issue that has made her question the city’s direction.
She pointed to a YMCA, park and library built near her neighborhood as examples of projects that directly benefited residents. Warehouses, she said, would not offer the same community value.
“The future of this community does not include, in my opinion, warehouses,” Seaton said. She said the city should instead consider parks, community gardens, senior services and other investments centered on residents.
Seaton described her neighborhood as predominantly Black, Latino and elderly. She said many longtime residents do not want to leave and may be unable to afford comparable housing elsewhere.
“I don’t want to sell my home. I don’t want to move,” Seaton said. “I have a friend around the corner. He’s 94 years old. He can’t move.”
“They should consider the people who live in the communities first,” she added, saying city leaders should
focus on what residents want and what is best for the neighborhood.
Maria Sanchez, who said she lives less than a mile from one proposed site, worries about how additional truck traffic would affect her 11-year-old son and 15year-old daughter.
Speaking through an interpreter, Sanchez said one child walks to school and another travels by bicycle or scooter. She has seen tractor-trailers maneuver near children on neighborhood streets, leaving her fearful for their safety.
Sanchez said the area has changed dramatically during the seven years she has lived there. Where she once saw citrus groves near Fifth Street, she now sees warehouses, damaged roads and growing truck traffic.
She said potholes and deteriorating pavement have led to repeated vehicle repairs for her family and neighbors. Although the city attempts to patch damaged streets, she said some repairs wash away after rain.
Sanchez also described truck noise audible inside her home with the windows closed. Her children have experienced increased allergies, coughs and other respiratory symptoms, she said, and she knows families whose children have been diagnosed with asthma.
“We don’t need any more warehouses near the houses,” Sanchez said through the interpreter.
She urged the city to prioritize street repairs, sidewalks, lighting and community centers, saying her neighborhood lacks adequate sidewalks and lighting despite residents paying taxes and repeatedly requesting improvements.
The San Bernardino City Unified School District also urged city officials to reject the extensions. In a July 21 letter signed by Thomas Pace, director of facilities planning and development, the district cited diesel particulate matter, roadway safety, emergency response times, pedestrian access and school transportation.
The district said its concerns were not directed at the applicant or any proposed business. Instead, officials asked the city to consider the cumulative public health and transportation effects of warehouse development,
particularly for children and other sensitive populations.
“Warehouse developments have been shown to generate increased heavy-duty truck traffic that can affect local circulation, roadway safety, emergency response times, pedestrian access and school transportation operations,” the district wrote.
San Bernardino Airport Communities submitted a separate analysis estimating that 20,803 residents live in the warehouse-impacted area north of San Bernardino International Airport, south of Base Line Street and west of the 210 Freeway.
Using 2024 American Community Survey five-year estimates, the organization reported that approximately 74% of residents in the affected area are Latino. Its analysis also identified eight nearby elementary, middle and high schools.
The organization said the area includes three low-income census tracts, one very-low-income tract and one moderate-income tract. It identified four census tracts in East Highland as upper income.
Community members said the comparison reflects a larger pattern: lower-income neighborhoods and communities of color are being asked to absorb more truck traffic, air pollution and industrial development while continuing to wait for sidewalks, lighting, parks and street improvements.
Chair Randall Hamerly, Vice Chair Chandra Thomas and commissioners Nicole McCance, Jarrod Miller and Brent Merideth voted to grant the extensions.
The decision allows the project entitlements to remain active, but residents said it would not end their opposition. San Bernardino Airport Communities leaders and neighborhood advocates plan to continue pressing city officials to consider cumulative health, traffic and quality-of-life impacts before allowing additional warehouse development.
For Seaton, the issue comes down to whether Highland’s planning decisions serve the people who have spent decades building their lives there.
“First, consider the people,” she said.
