he neighborhood was quiet, the homes arranged neatly next to each other without much fuss. It seemed like every other early, sleepy Saturday morning, until you reached the end of the driveway. There sat a truck laden with all the makings for a new bed.

Cars had pulled up closely to the front door and ladies hurriedly unpacked them and moved outside to the street parking.

An old sofa sat near the dumpster, now tossed aside and being replaced. Women came down the stairs, arms full of crinkled rolls of Christmas paper, old wall hangings, old stuff. “All I can say is,” said the bearer of old things as she broke out into song, “Let it go, let it go!!!...”

mazon recently welcomed nearly 250 new employees for Day One at its more than 850,000-squarefoot fulfillment center in Rialto, California. Amazon’s first cohort of employees will be joined by over 750 more full-time associates to pick, pack and ship customer items such as books, small electronics, school supplies and home goods. The employees work alongside innovative technologies, including Amazon Robotics, on a daily basis to fulfill customer orders.

On top of Amazon’s $15 minimum wage, full-time employees will receive industry-leading benefits starting on day one including: comprehensive full health, vision and dental insurance, 401(k) with 50% match; up to 20 weeks paid parental leave; and Amazon’s innovative Career Choice program which pre-pays 95% of tuition for courses in high-demand fields. Since Amazon launched Career Choice in 2014, more than 16,000 employees have pursued degrees in game design, nursing, IT programming and more.

his coming Saturday, July 13 the newly formed “Solidarity with Mexico & Pro-Migrant Committee” will hold the second Southern California-wide “Popular Assembly (Asamblea Popular)” at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Hall. Located at 5250 Central Ave. in Riverside, registration will commence at 9 a.m., while the working session is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

(Women Empowered through Labors of Love) were doing what they do to transform her home into a dream living space.

Moving out old furnishings, stripping walls bare, the first task at hand was paint and clean up.

Removing what was excess and leaving only what were the bare necessities, the group of women worked from sunup to sundown to accomplish the job of paid professionals, although none of these women work in construction, interior design, or general carpentry.

Some handled drills, others had hammers and nails and others yielded paint brushes with the finesse of journeymen.

Sheri Scott of Encino had driven all the way to Rialto to help. She was the first woman to have her home transformed by W.E.L.L. “I was a victim of childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence,” said Scott, “I was suffering from bad episodes of depression and PTSD.” When her home was made over, Scott said, “When I looked around and my home felt like a real home, the old stuff was gone, it was cleaned up, redecorated, it was just a relief. I was able to let go of some of the old feelings, it was just amazing.”

Maybe you can’t pick up heavy stuff, but you can vacuum, mop a floor, make the crew lunch, or make up a bed. If anyone wants to help, there is always something to do, and there’s nothing that’s a small job. It’s all important.”

For Nicole Lopez of West Covina, working on these projects has shown her the huge difference made in the women’s lives.

“There is a change in attitude, such a gratitude in their faces when the job is done.” Lopez says she loves beginning the transformation of the home, and then realizing the end results when the whole project comes together and is finished. “W.E.L.L. is open to any help anyone can give,” she said, “donations of money, donations of home items, come to paint, volunteer even for one hour, all of it makes a difference.”

When it was all said and done, the transformed home brought smiles and tears to everyone’s eyes. Nuckolls said, “My kids are so happy, they don’t want to leave their room at all. I’m overwhelmed with joy. They de-cluttered my home, getting rid of so many things from my past. Letting go of it all was just amazing.

They did an amazing job.”

Nuckolls will be working on future makeovers with W.E.L.L. and encourages anyone who would like to do the same to join forces with this group to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Critter Camp

he Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley is hosting its annual “Critter Camp” – a week-long, interactive, learning experience for students entering the second, third, fourth and fifth grades. The camp will be held July 22-26, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Through this hands-on camp, children will learn the importance of kindness and compassion toward all living creatures. All activities and lessons reinforce the importance of safety around and kindness to animals, as well as taking care of our environment.

Each day, students receive snacks, as well as reinforcement materials and take home crafts.

During Critter Camp, the campers will experience the wonderful world of bugs, marsupials, therapy and service animals, the

difference between wild and tame animals, and “make & take” animal art activities all while “camping” in actual tents.

We will also be creating Stars of HOPE to send encouragement to people who have experienced a disaster or tragedy or to people to whom we would like to show our appreciation and gratitude.

The fee to attend Critter Camp for the week is just $50 per student for the entire week. Limited financial assistance is available.

Following stabilization, these facilities provide outpatient treatment for patients such as therapy, case management, and medication support. Treatment is voluntary and can be referred by local law enforcement, healthcare workers, or patients themselves.

Assemblymember District 40 aw enforcement and emergency medical technicians face a difficult situation when they respond to help someone experiencing a psychiatric episode.

Thankfully, with the creation of crisis stabilization units, individuals can receive treatment without clogging our emergency rooms or crowding our jails.

San Bernardino County has been a pioneer in treating behavioral and mental health crises with their construction of crisis stabilization units throughout the county. These units are designed to offer care and monitoring for individuals aged 13 and above that require urgent psychiatric attention. These centers provide safe, calming settings with mental health professionals who specialize in crisis treatment, track their progress, and connect patients to local community resources.

Typically, these facilities provide care on a short-term basis and have between 16 and 20 beds. Psychiatric care administered in a separate, comfortable facility creates an

By making mental health treatment a central component of our public health plans, we can assist in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging more people to seek out help.

While the county has an effective program of crisis stabilization, I would like to see more.

We can do more to ensure their program is effective in all regions of our county, and I will continue to advocate to provide programs of this kind further infrastructure and support. This year I put in a request in the 2019-2020 budget to secure funding for Patton State Hospital to develop a crisis stabilization unit onsite. We will continue to be a strong advocate for ensuring positive mental health outcomes.

We must work to not only raise awareness for mental health issues, but also to identify creative opportunities to expand services. Doubling down on investments in crisis stabilization units will keep our communities safer and improve outcomes for those in need of treatment.

Education Secr etar y DeVos: This is a Disgrace College students have racked up $1.5 trillion in student loan debt.

These students take on staggering debt and blindly head off to college, hoping for the best. For many college students, this is a formula for disaster. These leaders of tomorrow have been abandoned to fend for themselves.

They are told, “You’ll figure it out.� Really? Students going off to college are receiving little or no counseling on this significant – possibly life-changing – financial encumbrance, which is compounded by virtually no investment in their career development: knowing what to major in based on their unique design. Students are grossly uninformed financially and unprepared to think critically about who they are, which is crucial to knowing which career paths to pursue that “fit.� This is a lethal combination which potentially cancels out academic and life success.

The statistics are staggering of how many lives are devastated each year by this blindness. Students are dropping out after a year or two of study with little to show for it, but now are saddled with huge, life-altering debt. Some finish college but are unable to pursue the career that they are passionate about because the salary in that field will not suffice considering their monthly $400 to $500 loan payment. Many are defaulting on these massive student loans, and the debt collectors are going after the assets and pensions of co-signing family members.

The impact of loan defaulting is having a ripple effect not just on the next generation of employees, mom and dads, home buyers, and community members, but also on the whole nation, which potentially faces a national financial catastrophe. Dr. Barmak Nassirian, from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, stated that this looming debt crisis – which I believe is compounded by a lack of clear career direction for college students – is “going to be very consequential for the future of our country.� Shouldn’t we be informing, investing in, caring for, and protecting our young men and women? We are not. This is a national disgrace.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos shared her thoughts on student-loan debts and college students’ career preparation. She spoke of her sincere concern regarding mounting student debt and its implications. A number of initiatives were cited as remedies for this problem, such as reforming the Federal Student

Loan Aid Platform, increasing available information about college program costs and earning potential by major, and reviewing accreditation in higher education.

These changes by the Department of Education will not significantly impact this national crisis. These actions are certainly well intended, but they will not solve the problem.

Then she landed on the real issue! DeVos made the case for encouraging young people much earlier in life to explore “what they are wired up to do� vocationally. She said that “students need to think about their innate aptitudes and not wait until they graduate.� She also said that “communities have to take responsibility for this in a major way.� The seemingly illusive concept that DeVos is trying to identify is calling. Vocational calling is the key to unlocking a valid approach to attacking this national failure. It is a bold statement to make, but helping students to establish a firm understanding of their calling and design will make a college education pay off and help solve the student-debt issue.

DeVos has identified the core problem but has not provided a viable solution. Saying it is a community’s responsibility to increase career development earlier in a student’s life is true, but the specifics are lacking. As the director of a nationally ranked careerservices program for over 20 years, I have advised thousands of college students. Most students put on a good face, but truth be known, most of them have no idea about their design, vocational calling, and what that all means for choosing a major and a career. So I affirm DeVos’ appraisal.

Each person has been uniquely crafted – or as DeVos said, “wired� – to find meaning, purpose, and satisfaction in the world of work and career. This “fit� will be discovered by investing time into identifying that uniqueness and then connecting it to the world of work. The facilitation of a student’s self-knowledge and assessment is the starting point for this process. This is the framework for designing a blueprint of the individual’s calling DNA. Knowing one’s design, transferable skills, aptitude, abilities, interests, personality, and characteristics will lay the foundation for solid career development. This must start in the home.

Parents need to take the lead in encouraging self-assessment– the cornerstone of good career devel-

opment– which will help identify all these unique and wonderful attributes of a son or daughter. Parents, who know their children better than anyone, can help them reflect on who they are and what that potentially means for them with college major and career interests. Other influencers – such as teachers, coaches and youth pastors– can also contribute to this awareness of gifting.

Guidance counseling also must be in place as this crucial process continues. For private school, homeschooling, and Christian schools, this counseling must be sought out and secured. Within the public system, we must get back to guidance counselors having the primary role of personally mentoring and guiding students in self-awareness and career exploration. This is not happening currently. Having talked with countless guidance professionals over the years, staffs have been cut, and they are now responsible for school duties that have nothing to do with the core objectives of their profession.

Finally, college career-services offices have to do their job. Over 60% of college students have never stepped into their careerservices office or have only visited once or twice. Something is terribly wrong with that picture.

Many career offices are not effectively meeting the needs of their students. This must change.

The understanding of calling revolutionizes career development. Students must be personally assisted in helping to confirm a major and to realize and pursue their own distinguishing and individual callings. Then they need to be directed and led in connecting who they are to their “fit� in the marketplace. This is the charge for a career-services professional. The role of these three indispensable components of the career-development process cannot be understated.

If students are actively engaged and invested in the right philosophy and resources regarding calling and career development, the student loan and default rates will be significantly reduced, college retention and graduation rates will increase, and students will have a much better opportunity for career and life success. —Dr. Jim Thrasher is the Senior Fellow of Grove City College’s career services office and the coordinator of the Institute for Faith & Freedom's working group on calling.

Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883) made him famous with his English translations (five of them, the first in 1859.) His poetry focused on the use of “quatrains.” A quatrain is a “type of stanza, or a complete poem, consisting of four lines.” Khayyam popularized this form of poetry.

Living in the basement and thinking it was the entire house has another implication. One can have a basic education; even an advanced degree. Thinking he or she has climbed the heights of academic knowledge. It’s an illusion of education. It is merely an echo of the teacher’s views or a parrot’s response. It’s living in a basement.

From the beginning of birth the child is learning. This process continues throughout life. The accumulation of knowledge. The natural purpose of learning is putting what is learned into action.

The highest purpose is to use knowledge for the benefit of humanity. Of course, there are those who use what they know to the detriment of others. It is a risk that every student must deal with. Life in the basement.

Living in a basement and imagining it being the entire house is boring. A waste of time. Henry Ward Beecher said, “God asks no one if they will accept life. That is not our choice. Our only choice is what we will do with the time we have.”

The implication is clear. Broadening the scope of one’s life is essential. Doctors and lawyers often live in the basement of medicine and law. Boring.

Ministers’ basement can be theology. Boring. Business men may have the basement buying and selling. Boring. When anyone has only one interest, life becomes . . . . boring.

A wide range of interests builds many rooms, beside a basement.

Life becomes more vibrant. It is also an excellent antidote to Omar’s depression.

Amen. Selah. So be it.

Quality Start San Bernardino County hosts free Early Childhood Conference for educators

uality Start San Bernardino County (QSSB) presented the 3rd Annual QSSB Early Childhood Conference, June 28-29th, 2019 at Cal State San Bernardino.

This free two-day conference brought together over 500 early childhood educators from around the county to grow their skills, network with their peers, and receive much deserved encouragement and support.

Bank of America announces $180,000 investment to local nonprofits

ank of America recently announced $180,000 in grants to 12 local nonprofits that will advance economic mobility for individuals and families and put them on a path toward financial stability. This was part of a of a larger $500,000 investment to 49 nonprofits across the Inland Empire. The grants fund resources for workforce development and education that help people chart a path to better economic futures, as well as or basic needs that are fundamental to building lifelong stability.

While the region has benefitted from the current economic growth, especially in job creation, a recent study by the Brookings Institute showed the Inland Em-

pire in desperate need of greater job diversity in order to lift wages and close a fast growing income gap, noting over half - 54 percent - of the region’s jobs being “neither good nor promising, meaning they provide insufficient pay or benefits and no viable career pathway to good jobs.”

The local nonprofits receiving funding will help address two key factors improving financial stability: basic needs such as access to food, shelter and health services, and access to educational and workforce development services that either give young adults pathways to employment or provide additional opportunities for people to rebuild their careers and lives for better-paying work.

“The future of the region’s economy and making it sustainable begins with better pathways to educational attainment and a more skilled labor force, as more than 1.3 million of the Inland Empire’s workers lack a bachelor’s degree.

But through strategic philanthropic investments into our incredible nonprofit network, Bank of America is deploying its capital to help connect teens and young adults to educational resources and the current workforce to advanced job skills training, especially for those from economically disadvantaged communities,” said Al Argüello, Inland Empire market president at Bank of America.

Over the past three years QSSB has supported 1,405 early childhood educators in 203 sites and reached over 9,000 children ages 0-5. Attendees represent a variety of site types enrolled in QSSB including: License- Exempt Family, Friend and Neighbor, Family Child Care, and Center-based.

This conference is a culmination of the partnership between QSSB and educators to ensure the highest quality care is afforded to young children across the county.

This year the theme of the conference was “Let Your Sun Shine In,” which heavily focused on inclusion, the importance of play, and mindfulness behavior for both the educator and child. Attendees were able to choose from 45 sessions that ranged from magical mindful storytelling, introduction to the outside classroom, supporting children’s social and emotional development, and more.

Participants were also able to interact with 25 vendors, including early education allies Lakeshore Learning and Discount School supply, various community resources, and purchase items to bolster their classrooms.

Each day featured a keynote speaker with extensive experience in early education. Saturday’s Sharron Krull, consultant and author, focused on the importance of Girls Clubs of Greater RedlandsRiverside; Catholic Charities; CASA of San Bernardino County; Children’s Fund; CAP of San Bernardino County; Crafton Hills College Foundation; Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio

self-care for educators; while Friday’s Julie Kurtz, consultant, author, and therapist, stressed the importance of trauma informed care and importance of the role educators play in their children’s lives.

“Fifty percent of children, according to the American Psychological Association, have experienced trauma in the United States alone. That means that it is a matter of life and death that we learn strategies to build resilience and heal.” Julie Kurtz, M.S, LMFT. Not only were these classes beneficial by topic, but every participant received a certificate to document their hours of participation. As a Quality Rating and Improvement System, QSSB sites are rated according to state mandated criteria, including continuing education of staff. In support, QSSB offers year round workshops and trainings and the conference has quickly grown to be the most anticipated event.
