n Friday April 12th the Rialto Unified School District (RUSD) had the honor and pleasure to host State

Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) Tony Thurmond as he formally received and recognized the Green Ribbon School winners from Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside County and San Bernardino

County. The event took place at Morris Elementary School, with site visits to Milor and Rialto High Schools, which showcase the amazing efforts taking place at all three schools that promote environmental literacy: environ-

mental impact, wellness, and sustainability.

Additionally, RUSD has also been nominated to compete in the U.S. Department of Education Thurmond, cont. on next pg.

n a sunny Friday morning over 200 people flocked to the new See’s Candies that opened on April 12 in the Renaissance Marketplace.

ribbon cutting at 9:30 a.m. hundreds of people waited in line for a chance to be the first 100 people to get a free goodie bag of free See’s Candies. Everyone else on Friday got a free box of chocolates with a $25 purchase.

Community celebrates inaugural Dolores Huerta Day with iconic civil rights leader

Huerta commended students at the dual language school named in her honor for being exceptionally “articulate” in both English and Spanish, reminding the audience to work diligently to ensure the “best quality of education for our children.”

“We have to work hard to make sure these children will have a free college education,” Huerta continued. “We will not take ‘no’ for an answer, this is the richest country in the world, we will find the money!”

Students and adults cheered, “Sí se puede, sí se puede” in response.

Huerta also encouraged people to participate in Census 2020 to ensure adequate funding for communities, and to make a concerted effort to elect “good people.”

Following her speech Huerta, with Assemblymember Reyes by her side, greeted and chatted with students before taking photos with community members. An unveiling of a mural depicting the social rights activist in the academy concluded the program.

The celebration was hosted by Assemblymember Reyes, the Fontana Unified School District and DHIA. Since the passage of AB 2644 the states of Washington and New Mexico have passed similar bills to recognize Dolores Huerta. asked, “What can we do to support you?” He told them not to answer then, but to think about it and handed them his card.

SBVC Gresham Ar t Galler y hosts two exhibitions

an Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) hosted two recent art exhibits to showcase the work of SBVC students, art faculty, alumni and regional artists. Held at the Clara and Allen Gresham Art Gallery on campus, these educational programs were free and open to the public.

The first installation was called "Inland Faces," an exhibition focused on the diversity of people with whom we interact every day, from the workplace to our social lives.

The intention of the exhibit was to explore a common subject of our creative attention: people and their faces. The following art

show was "Imperfect Construct," featuring photographs from Steve Thomas.

"The exhibit explores human interface within various environments; However, I am exploring extreme and vertical panographic images," Thomas said to Art Connection Network. "This type of photo absolutely challenges perception. With 'imperfect construct,' the lens is moved through space during exposure and imperfect representation space prevails.

Objects are stretched or compressed or even erased. These works may send you down the rabbit hole."

Words to Think About: Religious bigotr y sweeping nation sits, transportive, productive; it basically opens doors and opportunities.

For this article, I will focus on walls first and follow with bridges.

There are different kinds of material walls, also there are several types of figurative walls. For example.

Most of us are aware of President Trump’s obsession with a wall at the border between the U.S.A. and Mexico. Pope Francis I has called a wall as being immoral. I’m not sure but that the Pope is viewing the wall in a literal sense. I think he is seeing it as figurative.

He also suggests that his preference is for bridges rather than walls. Bridges are also figurative.

Walls are prohibitive-stationary.

Bridges are also prohibitive and stationary. But, in the figurative sense, bridges are beneficial, tran-

LYING, or prevaricating, equivocating, hyperbole, misleading. I have 35 synonyms for lying, but four can clarify the basic meaning of lying. The nature of lying is that it is compulsive, as well as habit forming.

In addition, the person who is a liar is also narcissistic. He or she lies to protect his self-love. Another expression is a grandiose attitude. They can do no wrong in relating to others.

Psychologically they have an exalted opinion of themselves. The most obvious examples are dictators: Hitler, Mussolini, Statin, Castro, Peron. Liars are reincarnation of one or more of these exam-

ples. Is it possible?

RACISM or prejudice or bias or bigotry or misogyny. Racism is often limited to black people but it can be seen toward anyone that is NOT white: brown, yellow or red. White Supremacy is becoming prevalent. Gender is also a reflection including transgender.

A tragedy in today’s world is the affect toward women in unequal pay for similar jobs. This condition is gradually changing. Hopefully.

Religious bigotry is sweeping across our land. Especially against the Muslims. Currently the Muslim religion is second to Christianity in numbers—especially in the mid-East and the far-East. (Indonesia) Isis is often equated with the Muslim faith. And it ain’t. It’s like the KKK, a misrepresentation of Christianity. Isis is not a true view of Islam.

Just as “walls” are figurative, so are “bridges.”

BRIDGES speak of opportunity.

Rivers have often become boundaries that block understanding and opportunities. Until bridges are built.

I’m well acquainted with the Ohio River. Within a few miles of my hometown, I can count scores of bridges between Bellaire (Ohio) and Benwood (West Virginia). Steubenville (Ohio) and Weirton (West Virginia). Kentucky, one side and Indiana, on the other side.

Bridgeport was the town north of Bellaire. Wheeling was across the river in West Virginia. There is an island in the middle of the river with three bridges. There were also two bridges for trains, cars and walkways. Opportunities galore.

I’ve visited the Nile River, the Amazon River, the Yukon River, the Mississippi River, the Missouri River, the Danube River, the Rhine River, the Hudson River, the Thames River plus scores more. Everyone had and has bridges across them. What for?

COLLABORATION.

Without bridges rivers become walls. In addition to the ones I’ve mentioned, there are many other figurative walls. Political views, Ethnic Pride, Religious Beliefs, Significant Language Differences, Historical Variances, Geographical Terrains.

One illustration is typical. The St Lawrence River divides Canada and the U.S.A. The north is Ontario and Quebec. The south is New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. Bridges galore. Different political views different languages, different cultures, etc.

One final word about bridges. It is a universal concept, that is a part of all major religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. Jesus quoted it in Luke 6:31 and Matthew 7:12. It traditionally is called the Golden Rule (Bridge).

“DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.” Amen. Selah. So be it.

ewly elected Business Committee members were sworn in by San Manuel Tribal Court Chief Justice Claudette C. White as the tribal officers began their terms this week.

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is a sovereign nation with its own system of government. Tribal government consists of two governing bodies: a sevenmember Business Committee and a General Council of all adult members 21 years of age and older. Members of the Business Committee are elected by the General Council every year with officers holding staggered positions in two-year terms. As an elected body, the Business Com-

mittee is responsible for enforcing by-laws, establishing policies, protecting business interests and preserving the sovereignty of the Tribe.

Vincent Duro was re-elected to the office of Vice Chairman, marking his seventh term in this office and eighth term overall as a Business Committee member. In addition to his elected roles, Mr. Duro has served on several committees for the social and cultural betterment of the Tribe, including the San Manuel Education Committee which oversees the San Manuel Education Department, and is a co-founder of the Tribal Unity and Cultural Awareness Program.

Kenneth Ramirez was re-elected to the office of Tribal Secretary marking his fifth term in this office. He serves on the San Manuel Education Committee and actively promotes access to healthcare and education through his work with Loma Linda University Health and is a member of the operating committee for First Nations Experience (FNX), the nation’s first Native American and World Indigenous Peoples television network.

Newly elected, Audrey Martinez previously served as a member of the San Manuel Business Committee, which included several terms as secretary and treasurer.

During that period (1995-2011), the San Manuel Band of Mission

Loma Linda Univer sity Children's Hospital cures sickle cell patient through their first stem cell transplant

octors at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital recently conducted the institution’s first stem cell transplant in a sickle cell disease patient, effectively curing her of the inherited blood disease. The successful procedure offers hope and accessible treatment to those suffering from the disease in the Inland Empire and surrounding regions.

Children’s Hospital doctors had worked for nearly a year to build a program focused on helping hematology patients, specifically those with hemophilia and sickle cell disease.

Akshat Jain, MD, pediatric physician specializing in hematologic disorders at Children's Hospital, said he is pleased with the outcome of the transplant and what it means for future patients suffering from sickle cell disease.

“We created a successful program so children and their families suffering from this disease don’t need to look elsewhere for treatment — it’s available to them right here in the Inland Empire,” Jain said.

The procedure was also Children’s Hospital’s first haploidentical transplant, meaning the stem cells donated — by the patient’s father — were only half a genomic match to the patient’s own

stem cells. The transplant team infused the father's cells directly into the patient after conditioning chemotherapy to replace the unhealthy blood-forming cells.

The patient, 11-year-old Valeria Vargas-Olmedo, had lived with sickle cell disease since birth. Her family began seeking treatment last year after she became incapacitated, unable to continue daily activities such as attend school, get in a car or even walk. Doctors said she had debilitating chronic pain, bone loss and bone necrosis.

“She is now disease free and can go back out into the world to do what an 11-year-old should be doing,” Jain said.
