ialto Unified School District is excited to announce that one of its

29 schools, Dr. John H. Milor High School, located at 266 West Randall Avenue in Rialto, received official notification from the California Department of Education (CDE) of its

bestowment of Model Continuation High School distinction.

According to Andres Luna II, Principal of Milor High School, staff worked tirelessly to culti-

vate a new, positive focus for the school. Tremendous work was put into discarding antiquated practices and redesigning a more Milor, cont. on next pg.

an Flores, a Colton Joint Unified School Board Member and the current Chief of Staff for departing San Bernardino County Supervisor Josie Gonzales, announced Tuesday that he is running for Fifth District Supervisor in 2020.

“For the past 14 years I’ve worked side by side with Supervisor Gonzales to improve the quality of life and economic opportunities in the Fifth District,” said Flores. “We have built new libraries, hundreds of new senior and family housing units, along with new facilities and improved parks for families.

I’m proud to have earned Supervisor Gonzales’ endorsement, and I plan to build on our success.”

In addition to being Supervisor Gonzales’ Chief of Staff, Flores has served as President and as a

board member for the Colton Joint Unified School District since 2012. “I ran for school board to fight for our students and to make sure that every child has access to a quality education,” Flores stated. “We have created incredible partnerships to help support pathways for vocational training and college-bound students.”

One such example is the agreement between Colton Unified and the new California University of Science and Medicine. Flores was instrumental in the sale of school district property to CUSM to build a new medical school in Colton. The agreement gives Colton district graduates preferential admission to the medical school. “This means our kids have a fast track to fulfilling their dreams of becoming a doctor here in our own community,” added Flores.

A

deputy coroner is a crucial career within law enforcement.

From conducting investigations to determining the cause and mode of death, contacting descendants of the deceased, to helping families go about making the tough transition during such a trying time, deputy coroners wear many hats and put themselves on the line when in the field.

We had the opportunity to sit down with County of San Bernardino Deputy Coroner Marlene Leyva to discuss how one can become a deputy coroner. We covered her journey to success, and discussed the critical aspects that come along with this gut wrenching career.

What inspired you to become a deputy coroner?

ML: Initially I wanted to be a pathologist, but I had a tough time Milor student-focused curriculum and culture, therefore, this achievement and success is a direct result of the dedicated, creative, and talented school staff and its community of learners.

Kennedy, ‘Efforts and Courage are not enough without purpose and direction.’ Purpose and direction, as outlined in our site’s Strategic Plan, were two key components that were infused in our system of student support as seen in the aligned curriculum, instructional practices, guidance, and counseling.”

ML: The biggest hardship was the fact that there was not an abundance of coroner’s offices around.

In Southern California, there are only five coroner’s offices—it is a small group—I had to be persistent. I applied four times to the County of San Bernardino before they called me in for an interview.

I was never discouraged though; there was always a sense of encouragement from the coroner’s office, telling me I needed just a little bit more experience.

How can you catch a hiring manager’s attention through a resume?

ML: Education always makes an applicant stand out. In addition, volunteer work and internships are the best way to gain experience in this field. You get to experience first-hand if the position is right for you and then have the ability to have our management team guide you here at the County of San Bernardino Coroner’s Office.

To anyone pursuing a career as a deputy coroner, experience is important, because it is such a divergent field. You are exposed to death and body fluids almost every day. This job is not something that grows on you; you can handle it or you cannot.

What are your job duties?

ML: It’s my responsibility to establish the cause and manner of death, identification, notification, securing any property, and handling final arrangements.

How difficult is it to notify family about the death of their loved one?

ML: The first time I was scared and worried about breaking the news. However, once I realized it was not about me, I learned how to be a source of compassion and assistance to these families during these difficult times.

What type of critical impact do deputy coroners have on the public?

ML: Our biggest impact is bringing the family truth and giving

them answers as to how their loved one passed away. We literally guide them through the entire process, we are the initial guidance - giving them information and closure.

Are you still as passionate about your career compared to when you started?

ML: I am definitely still passionate about my job today. Even after going back to school, I still love it.

There are no two days that have been the same in the past 12 years I’ve been here.

How has your career changed you?

ML: The major change has been personal growth. Career wise I’m happy where I stand. The biggest change within me has resulted from working with people experiencing a loss every day; you start to live a life where you don’t stress about small stuff anymore. I take advantage of letting people know how I feel and letting them know how important they are to me.

In what ways has the job shifted from when you started 12 years ago?

ML: As an office, we have changed quite a bit in the technical realm. We’re doing a lot better in regards to how we document incidents, we’ve grown as investigators with time and training. We have digital devices now, which take fingerprints and the device identifies people. We have computers that we take out on scene; it makes the job so much quicker.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

ML: Don’t give up, you can achieve anything you want in this world. Do your research, and most importantly, go shadow a professional in whatever field you’re interested in, to see if that’s the career you want to do for the rest of your life. If anyone has any questions or interest in a career as a deputy coroner, send them my way.

I was a first generation college student, so I went out myself and made contact with a lieutenant at the County of Los Angeles Coroner’s office when I was 18. The Lieutenant explained investigative pathology to me. When he explained that the investigative side was out in the field and on the streets, it was clear that this was my direction.

What schooling did you obtain?

ML: I started at California State University, Los Angeles in August of 1994. When I started college I majored in biology, then a year later, I switched my major to Criminal Justice. They had just opened a forensics lab, so I took several Criminal Justice and Forensics courses. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2001.

Did you partake in any internships?

ML: When I was in college,

there were absolutely no internships available at that time. Nowadays there are volunteer positions and many internships within the field. Although during this time, I did land a part-time autopsy tech position in Ventura, which gave me experience in my field.

How did you prepare to start applying for your first professional position?

ML: I did a lot of research in the library; I also attended workshops on how to write a resume at my university. When I worked at the mortuary, it was part of my job to go to the coroner’s office to pick up bodies and I always used that time to ask questions and network.

Nowadays I advise students to completely immerse themselves in the field, go shadow, and go volunteer. There is so much more opportunity available to walk in a professionals shoes, in order to get first-hand, hands on experience.

What are some hardships one may face when breaking into busi-

sive and competitive application process that involves effectiveness, assessments, and use of data.

The process included a peer review panel and on-site visit.

The few selected schools, such as Milor High School, are noted in the State as schools that provide exemplary programs to at-risk youth through the use of innovative instructional strategies, flexible scheduling, guidance and counseling services.

Tony Thurmond, State Superintendent of Public Instruction stated, “A culture of caring that focuses on the emotional and education needs of the unique populations they serve, are what make these continuation high schools the best examples of how to help kids strive and reach their full potential.”

Milor High School opened its doors in 1981. The continuation school is the namesake of a former Rialto school teacher turned first Superintendent of the Rialto Unified School District (serving from 1946-1966).

Guest Op-Ed Michael Vallante, U.S. Small Business Administration Region IX Administrator During the State of the Union, President Trump highlighted the bold changes to trade policies and tax reform that he is making in order to fight for American workers and businesses that will expand prosperity. This reform is working.

Based out of Chino, Thin Metal Sales had been experiencing a decline in sales due to the high availability of imported low cost steel.

Jonathan Mulvihill knows his company inside and out since he began working summers at Thin Metal Sales at the age of 12. The company was founded by his uncle in 1976 and acquired by his father in 1983; in 2017 Jonathan became a majority owner.

After serving in Iraqi Freedom in the Marine Corps, Jonathan returned to the family business and took business classes. Jonathan became the General Manager in 2015, but the high availability of low-cost steel from China used by competitors caused sales to continue to shrink.

In 2018, President Trump’s Administration imposed tariffs on imported metals. Thin Metal Sales saw an increase of 40 percent of sales,

since his competitors were running out of imported steel supplies.

Jonathan Mulvihill also took advantage of the tax savings from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and new favorable depreciation rules to reinvest nearly $134,000 in new equipment, upgrades and repairs to existing equipment, website updates and provide generous company bonuses to eleven employees which he trains and promotes from within for the highly skilled positions.

The tax and trade policy reforms are helping American small businesses like Thin Metal Sales succeed, and create new jobs. Entrepreneurs have created 5.3 million new jobs and added more than half a million new manufacturing jobs since November 2016.

African American, Hispanic American, and Asian American unemployment have all reached their lowest levels ever recorded.

Orange County’s unemployment rate of 2.8 percent demonstrates that our local community is prospering.

Jonathan’s belief in continuous improvement led him to join one of SBA’s funded Resource Partner programs, the SCORE Orange County CEO Forum where valuable information and experiences are shared with other entrepreneurs in a peer group setting in order to help businesses succeed.

The music that’s in all of us

And suddenly the music burst through the borders.

This was in May of 1999, in a city in the Netherlands called Alkmaar. Laura Hassler, an American woman who had been living in the Netherlands for many years by then — who was a choir director and, in essence, the “town musician,� the organizer of public music events — had put together a concert for the town’s annual honoring of the dead of World War II. But the bloody war in Kosovo was then raging: Thousands had died; nearly a million refugees were streaming across Europe. Its horror dominated the daily news and Laura couldn’t ignore it. She couldn’t simply focus on the war dead of half a century ago, not when the hell of war was alive in the present moment, pulling at her soul.

She decided, “We’ll perform music from the people suffering from war now — folk songs from Eastern Europe,� she told me. Her impulse was to reach out, to connect, somehow, with those suffering right now, on the other side of Europe. And something happened the night of the concert. When it ended, there was a moment of profound silence . . . and then, as the audience stood, applause so thunderous that the rafters shook. It went on for 20 minutes.

One of the musicians, a political refugee from Turkey, said to her afterwards: “This concert was special. We should put it on a train, send it to Kosovo and stop the war!�

And so it began, a Zen moment, a crazy idea. Within a few weeks, a peace group had donated office space and Musicians Without Borders — an international organization with the stated mission “to use the power of music to bridge divides, connect communities, and heal the wounds of war� — was born. “Within a few months, we had enough money to rent buses and go to camps in the Netherlands for refugees from Kosovo,� Laura told me recently. Something profoundly necessary had manifested. “It had to happen.�

At the refugee camps, the musicians made music with children and performed again the beautiful folk songs from the region. They also brought donated violins, accordions, guitars. Refugees who were musicians were likely to have fled without their instruments. These donated instruments gave them their music back. “This was run by passion,�

Laura said. “We didn’t know exactly where we were going, but we knew what we were doing.�

Within a few months the new organization was traveling to Sara-

jevo, in Bosnia, bringing instruments, connecting with local musicians, and making music with children in refugee camps. Building on these experiences, Musicians Without Borders worked toward a long-term project in Srebrenica, with children from both sides of a cruel divide, which had separated Serbs (in the city) and Muslims (in refugee camps). This was a divide created by war and enforced by politics and bureaucracy. But music was a way to start to bridge it. “This is what we believed,�

Laura said. “that musicians don’t identify primarily by nationality or religion, but as musicians.

We’ll find musicians in all war torn regions who feel this way, as we do.�

In Srebrenica, scene of a 1995 massacre in which thousands were killed, MWB’s Music Bus became the organization’s first long-term project and an example of how music could help to rebuild a society shattered by war. With the Music Bus, Musicians Without Borders had established itself internationally. A short while later the organization was invited to Palestine to present its work. It also came to the attention of UNICEF and currently it works with local musicians in six countries — Kosovo, Palestine, Rwanda, Uganda, Northern Ireland and El Salvador — all of them torn apart by war and cultural division and suffering longterm consequences. “In the beginning, people laughed at us,� she said. “We had no basis, no funding. But we had a vision. We struggled to make it for years. But every time we were about to go under, we survived. “Every person has music in them!�

And the core and heart of Musicians Without Borders lays itself bare. This is the passion that drives it, that drives Laura, who grew up as a child of activist parents in a cooperative community, where “we were always making music. It was part of my life. I was always setting up singing groups and leading them.�

Every person has music in them, crying to be released. And, Laura believes, music is a healing force that can and must be used to move humanity past the damage it has been doing to itself ever since war and conquest became the global norm. “There are different ways of experiencing music, as we all know,� she has written, “but also very different ideas about what music is. In European related cultures the dominant idea of music has, over history, become ‘something’ outside the person, to be

taught and learned, practiced, perfected, held to a standard of quality and achievement. “. . . a relatively few people are ‘artists,’ of whom a very few are ‘top artists’; but most of us are not — we’re listeners. And many listeners would tell you that they cannot make music. “There is another way of perceiving music which many cultures, including earlier European cultures, share: that music is in the middle of all life, a basic element of being human, one that plays a continuous role in the life of the community and of every person in it. Inherent in this understanding of music is that, just like the capacity for language, music is part of our DNA and ‘doing’ music is part of human existence. It is what we do as we work, play, love, celebrate, suffer, mourn. You might say that we are music: from the rhythm of our heartbeat, our breath or our walking or dancing step, to the perception of tone everywhere in our lives, to the melody of our voices: music is in our bodies and in our spirits. . . .

Music is a universally shared human trait, and all people have it in them.�

This is the future — a part of the enormous change pushing humanity beyond itself, beyond what it thinks it knows. Paul Hawken, author of Blessed Unrest, described this enormous becoming in a TED Talk: “It’s so new we can’t recognize it. We’re so familiar with armies and governments, wars, churches and religions. There’s no precedent for what we’re doing. . “In the 20th Century: big ideologies stalked the earth, clad in armor. They fought for the control of our minds, of our land, and it wasn’t pretty. “This movement is humanity’s immune response, to resist and heal political disease, economic infection and ecological corruption caused by ideologies. It is about possibilities and solutions.

Humankind knows what to do.�

This movement . . . maybe it has a million pieces. We’re putting humanity back together in a new way, in a way that values Planet Earth and the soul of humanity.

When Musicians Without Borders started becoming known, Laura said, she began receiving emails from musicians from all over the world, saying in essence: “Can I work with you? This is why I became a musician.�

Somehow I’m not surprised. The music’s in all of us. So is the desire to connect, to create peace, to save the world.

or some time I have been anticipating Black History Month-February. I have written several articles about the history of blacks in America, but a new insight has provoked my mind.

History is a speculative study.

No one knows for sure. When this or that happened; what exact date; how many involved; who won or lost.

SPECULATION is the key word. In my research such words as: perhaps, about, maybe, I think, etc. dominate events. Accuracy is relative. It depends on who is writing the story. Will Durant, the famous historian, said “History is the account of what happened in

Stereotypes have been the norm for hundreds of years. Conservative Christians believe blacks are descendants of Cain. Not all of them, but many of them. Speculation.

One thing I believe for certain.

It’s found in the Bible, in the Book of Acts, chapter 17 and verses 24 and 26 KJV. “God had made all things … and has made of ONE BLOOD all natures of men (and women.)”

I’ve known a lot of people that have had a blood transfusion. Not one of them knew if the blood came from a white person, a black person, red, yellow or brown.

The lesson is clear. Never judge a person by the color of their skin,

the language they speak-or their amount of education or money they have.

If it’s NOT birth that makes the difference between people, what is it? My view is NURTURE, TRAINING, INFLUENCE, OPPORTUNITIES (education primarily).

By the way, it’s not physical handicaps either. Consider Helen Keller. (Blind, deaf and unable to speak). Of the successful people I’ve known some were: Quadriplegic, Japanese, Hispanic, cripple, stuttered, uneducated. laborer, housewife, agnostic.

I know, or have known, many successful black people. They have made significant contributions to our country. The first one has to be Martin Luther King, Jr. He was two years younger than me and I admired him. At one time I had all of his books and read them avidly. In his heyday I was pastoring in Florida. The church was very racist-the reason I left.

MLK was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. At age 15 he attended Morehouse College and received his Ph.D. from Boston University. He also at-

tended two Seminaries - Crozer Seminary and Union Seminary.

His Dad was a minister and he followed him as a minister. His Civil Rights work was inspired by Rosa Parks. Mahatma Gandhi inspired MLK in significant ways, primarily in peaceful protesting.

In 1963 he helped organize the “March on Washington.” His speech on, “I Have A Dream” was delivered. As usual, it was peaceful.

Unfortunately, he was killed on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tenn.

By James Earl Ray. He was 39 years old. A great person.

The Reverend Doctor Cecil “Chip” Murray was born on September 26, 1929. He became one of the best preachers’ I’ve ever heard. My favorite sermon of his was, “The Meaning of Christmas: TO YOU, WITH LOVE, FROM GOD. Based on John 3:16.

During the Korean War he was a “Fighter Pilot” and was decorated with the Soldiers Medal of Valor.

He also received a Ph.D. from the Southern California School of Theology.

He spent many years as the Senior Minister of the FAME Renais-

sance Church, and retired on September 5, 2005. Under his leadership, the church grew from a few hundred members to over 18,000.

Many notable L.A. leaders were in his church, including Mayor Thomas Bradley and Attorney Johnny Cochran.

By the way, Chip Murray and I were Graduate School classmates.

James Baldwin. He was born on August 2, 1924 and died on November 30, 1987. He is buried in Harlem. In the 50’s and 60’s he was, without question, the most famous African American author and playwriter in the entire world.

His voice was influential in describing black culture in the United States. He certainly influenced my writing and one of my favorite quotations. “The challenge of living is to be present in everything you do, from baking bread to making love.”

Baldwin spent the last fifteen years of his life in Paris, France in protest of the racism in the U.S. Of his many writings, my favorite is “Go Tell It On The Mountain.”

Amen. Selah. So be it.

op elementary, middle and high school teams were honored with awards at the third annual Inland Empire Rube Goldberg competition that was held on Feb. 13 at the Riverside Convention Center.

Twenty-five teams participated in three divisions of the competition, which was organized by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools' Alliance for Education/Student Events. The event allowed students to collaborate as a team to create a complex machine designed to achieve

a simple task. This year's competition was called, "Put Money In A Pig." Below are results for each division by team name, school and district: Apprentice Division (elementary schools): Creative Spark Award: Myers Elementary (Rialto). Spirit of Rube Goldberg Award: Franklin Elementary (Redlands).

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Redlands-Riverside’s 25th Chocolate Fantasy raised more than $150,000 for Club programs on Feb. 9 – a record for the event.

Chocolate Fantasy has supported much-needed programs for local kids for a quarter of a century.

When the event started, it helped stabilize the Club financially. It was first held at Edwards Mansion, then Orton Center at the University of Redlands, before moving to the historic Mitten Building in 2001 shortly after it opened.

“We’re grateful for all the board members, volunteers, local businesses, dignitaries, and staff who made Chocolate Fantasy such a success over 25 years,” said Club CEO P.T. McEwen.

More than 250 people attended this year’s event, which included both longstanding traditions like auctions and food from local businesses, and new touches like complimentary valet, photo booth, swag bag and signature cocktail.

Boys & Girls Club kids welcomed guests at the door. Groups including Assisteens, National Charity League, Inland Empire Job Corps, and Nike volunteered.

Attendees bid in live and silent auctions, and enjoyed dancing to the B.O.E. (Best of Everything) Band. Redlands resident Tom Kaney sold his handmade cutting boards to benefit the Club.

Food vendors included the Mitten, Parliament Chocolate, Mill Creek Cattle Co., Nothing Bundt Cakes, Jose’s Mexican Food, Old Spaghetti Factory, Chef Erin’s Confections and Buffalo Wild Wings. Attendees voted for their favorite restaurant, chocolate maker, and decorations. Parliament won Chocolatier of the Year, Chef Erin won Decorations of the Year, and Lunch at the Mitten won Restaurateur of the Year.

Live auction items included a trip to Rome and Tuscany, tickets and a trip to see “Hamilton” on Broadway, tickets and a trip to Paul McCartney’s Las Vegas tour stop, and one-of-a-kind experiences to see the Angels, Padres and Denver Broncos play, and dinner at the Rancho Mirage home of philanthropists Tim and Carol Rochford.

The event’s 25th anniversary sponsor was the Ramos and Ramirez family, and Grand Chocolatier sponsor was ADP. Ray Watts, associate vice president for development at the University of Redlands, was the live auctioneer. He also co-hosted the event with KVCR 91.9 host Lillian Vasquez.

ccording the Public Policy Institute of California there are more than 5.5 million Californians who are over 65 years old, a number that is expected to double in the next 12 years. It is projected that in a little over ten years over one million seniors will require some assistance with self-care. In an effort to provide California’s growing senior population an independent and caring environment, Assemblymember Eloise Gómez Reyes (D- San Bernardino) introduced Assembly Bill 568 which establishes the California Care Corps Act that will incentivize high school graduates and college students to spend one to two years providing care for senior citizens in their community.

“Since arriving in the Legislature I have strongly advocated for in-

creased protection and services for our senior communities.” Assemblymember Reyes continued, “California is the 5th largest economy in the world and a beacon of hope for so many because of the contribution and efforts of our growing senior population. We owe a debt to our seniors to make sure that they receive the care they need in a dignified and supportive environment. The Family Caregiver Alliance estimates 4.4 million unpaid family caregivers in California, with approximately 1 in four being a millennial. SCAG covers the six southern counties of California, except for San Diego. This grant was awarded for using technology to decrease vehicle miles traveled.

Since San Bernardino County is the largest in the United States, it is conservatively estimated that this program will save over 150,000 miles traveled per year. It will also reduce greenhouse gasses and other pollution associated with driving. Additionally, it will improve public safety by allowing deputies to remain in the field, serving the public.

The Remote Electronic Warrant program had already been used after hours for processing warrants, but AB 2710, which went into effect on January 1, 2019, allowed for warrants to be processed remotely full-time.
