nticipation is building with the Rialto Unified School District and District African American Parent Advisory Council (DAAPAC) for the annual Black History Celebration.

All are welcome at the Black History Celebration on February 24, 2024, at Wilmer Amina Carter High School Theater Hall, located at 2630 N Linden Ave., Rialto, CA 92377. from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event will showcase a vibrant tribute to African-American culture and heritage, offering a platform to honor “unsung heroes” whose contributions have

shaped history, both locally and nationally.

Admission is free, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend.

This year's theme, "Celebrating Our Unsung Heroes," aims to shine a spotlight on those individuals whose impactful deeds and influence have often gone unrecognized. The RUSD staff and DAAPAC, working together, are thrilled to present a rich, educational program that will put a spotlight on unsung heroes both local and national, according to the committee leaders.

ep. Aguilar celebrated House passage of the bipartisan tax reduction bill that will help lower costs for hardworking parents, bolster the local economy and drive innovation.

The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act increases the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for hardworking families from $1,600/child per year to $2,000/child per year by 2025. In California’s 33rd (formerly 31st) Congressional District, the expanded CTC benefited 168,000 children while

in effect in 2021, and this revitalized CTC is expected to help at least 61,000 households.

This bill also provides needed tax relief for businesses by allowing them to deduct the full amount of a research and development investment from their taxable income, as well as allowing businesses to factor equipment depreciation into their tax deductions.

“Our country has seen tremendous economic progress over the last three years, and this bill will continue to drive forward the progress we have made for families and

businesses in the Inland Empire by lowering their taxes,” said Rep. Aguilar. “The expanded Child Tax Credit and the other tax relief provisions within this bill will help us support our hardworking parents, help local businesses continue to grow and create more good-paying jobs in our region.”

San Bernardino's 5th Ward Forum Spotlights Visionary Leadership and Civic Engagement with Incumbent Reynoso, Candidates Nickel and Ward

t the recently held 5th Ward People’s Forum in San Bernardino, candidates Henry Nickel, Rose Ward, and incumbent Ben Reynoso presented their compelling visions for the city's future, emphasizing community engagement, experienced leadership, and strategic investment.

The event, known for its respectful discourse, marked a significant moment in the city's political landscape.

The forum, organized by Just San Bernardino and the League of Women Voters and live-streamed by KVCR, took place at San Bernardino First Baptist Church on February 3rd. It stood out for its constructive approach, focusing on the city’s prospects rather than the political rivalry often seen in such gatherings.

Former City Councilmember Henry Nickel expressed his dedication to the city and its residents. “I took time out of my day knocking on doors to come here because I think it is important,” Nickel stated, emphasizing his commitment to understanding and addressing the community's needs. He conveyed optimism about the city's future, remarking, “I chose to move back here 15 years ago...I believe San Bernardino's best days are coming, and we've accomplished a lot.”

Businesswoman Rose Ward, with her 33 years of experience, pledged to be a voice for the constituents, ensuring that their concerns and aspirations are central to her decisionmaking. "I won't be another guest vote. It would be the vote so that you could have your say when the agenda

comes up," Ward affirmed, highlighting her commitment to making San Bernardino a safer and more prosperous city for future generations.

Incumbent Ben Reynoso reflected on his tenure since 2020, emphasizing his efforts to redefine the city's narrative from one of limitations to one of potential and growth.

“We're not broke, and we don't have to act like we're broke until the end of time,” Reynoso stated, outlining his focus on critical community investments such as affordable housing, career employment opportunities, and educational partnerships. “A vote for Ben Reynoso is a vote for the future of San Bernardino, for keeping young people and all people in the place that they love and call home for the foreseeable future and beyond,” he added.

While the forum was marked by an overall tone of respect and positivity, it was noted that candidates Kim Knaus and Chas Kelley were unable to attend, with Kelley having a prior commitment and Knaus canceling at the last minute.

n a revealing briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services on January 18 titled "Fighting Substance Abuse – The Center at Sierra Health Foundation Highlights Breakthroughs in Prevention and Recovery," industry experts came together to address the alarming rise in substance abuse and overdose deaths in California, while showcasing transformative approaches to prevention and recovery.

Kaying Hang of The Center at Sierra Health Foundation pointed out the grim reality that California saw over 109,000 overdose deaths in 2022, a figure staggering enough to fill the Sacramento Kings arena. "Overdose is now the leading cause of non-elderly death in the state, signaling a dire need for a shift in how we address

Close also underscored the impact of substances like fentanyl in unincorporated areas of the Central Valley, a concern echoed by Marie Perez Ruiz of the Central Valley Empowerment Alliance.

Ruiz shed light on the plight of farmworker communities in the Central Valley,

where over 5,000 people live in over 700 decaying dwellings. "These communities, predominantly comprised of indigenous, Mexican, and Filipino farmworkers, have been overlooked despite their vulnerability," Ruiz stated. She elaborated on the launch of a rural equity community campaign aimed at empowering these marginalized groups.

Addressing the nationwide crisis, Arlene Brown, serving the Bishop community primarily composed of Native Americans, highlighted that "Native Americans have some of the highest overdose rates. Decolonizing services is crucial – tailoring them to resonate with our culture and address our unique needs."

The briefing brought to the forefront the critical work being done by The Center at Sierra Health Foundation and its partners, highlighting the shift from punitive measures to holistic, culturally-sensitive care.

This initiative, allowing high schoolers to experience college-level courses, is more than an academic advantage; it's a crucial empowerment tool.

Enrollment in these programs offers African American students an invaluable head start. In a country grappling with educational disparities, this early exposure to college coursework is transformative, leveling the playing field and offering a glimpse into post-secondary education.

The benefits are not just academic. Economically, dual enrollment can be a game-changer. It confronts the daunting issue of college affordability head-on, making higher education more accessible to families for whom it might otherwise remain out of reach. This aspect is particularly crucial, given the disproportionate impact of student loan debt on African American communities.

about how we, as a society, can implement dual enrollment in a way that maximizes its accessibility and effectiveness for African American students. How do we ensure that every student who could benefit from this program has the opportunity to do so? The potential for change is immense – not just in terms of academic outcomes, but in shaping more inclusive, empowered futures for entire communities.

As we consider the path forward, the role of dual enrollment in shaping equitable educational landscapes becomes increasingly clear. It's more than just a step in the right direction; it's a powerful stride towards a future where educational success and access are realities for every student, irrespective of their background.

ebruary is American Heart Month, which is a great opportunity to discuss heart disease, which remains the number one killer in the United States.

Some of the most common conditions that contribute to heart disease are high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity. When these conditions are left unmanaged, they can lead to heart attacks, stroke and other serious health issues. The good news is that there’s a lot that can be done to reduce heart disease risk factors.

Five Tips to Improve your Heart Health

Tip #1 –Get screened. Schedule your annual physical exam to have your blood

pressure and blood levels checked. Lab work can reveal issues with cholesterol, diabetes and other important health conditions that can be managed with lifestyle changes or medications. Once your results are in, you can work with your doctor on a personalized plan to improve your heart health.

Tip #2- Embrace a healthy diet. Fuel your body with foods that are nutritious such as lean proteins, fiber, fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts. It’s important to limit processed foods that contain trans and saturated fats, foods with high cholesterol, high in sodium and products with added sugars.

Tip #3 - Exercise regularly. According to the American Heart Association, exercising 30 minutes a day for five days a week

can improve your heart health and reduce heart disease risk factors.

Daily exercise can be as simple as going for a daily walk, hiking, running, joining a gym or finding workouts online that can be done at home. Try different activities and develop a routine that works for your lifestyle.

Tip #4 – If you smoke, learn how you can stop. Smoking is a major risk factor that contributes to heart disease. Smoking causes arteries to become swollen and restrict blood flow to the heart, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Tip #5 – Manage your stress. Stress can cause high blood pressure, which can affect your heart’s ability to function. To manage your stress, learn deep breathing,

yoga, exercise or find a relaxing hobby to ease tension.

Also, studies have found that not getting enough sleep can increase your stress levels. Establish a regular bedtime routine and put your cell phone on silent to reduce interruptions in your rest.

Don’t skip a beat, make your heart health a priority. I encourage everyone to take simple steps that can improve how you feel and your overall quality of life.

n a groundbreaking move to foster community health and wellness, Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) has unveiled its latest initiative, 'Healthy Living: My Best Self.'

This comprehensive program, open to both members and non-members at no cost, is set to revolutionize access to health education, with a wide array of classes covering everything from diabetes and asthma management to prenatal care.

IEHP's 'Healthy Living: My Best Self' initiative represents a significant leap forward in health education, prevention, and promotion. Spearheaded by a dedicated team within the IEHP, the program seeks to bridge the gap between community members and essential health resources.

"We're not just offering classes; we're opening doors to a healthier lifestyle for everyone in our community," stated Jackie Loya, Health Educator I at IEHP.

With referrals coming from doctors and various health plan departments, the program addresses a myriad of health concerns, with a particular focus on weight management. "Our classes don't just educate; they empower individuals to take charge of their health, whether it's by making informed food choices, managing chronic conditions, or understanding the importance of mindfulness in their daily lives," Loya emphasized.

Chelsey Curry-Felix, Health Educator II at IEHP, highlighted the uniqueness of the initiative. "What sets our classes apart is the approach we take. It's not just about what's right or wrong in terms of diet; it's about giving people the knowledge and the space to celebrate their progress and incorporate mindful eating into their daily routine," Curry-Felix explained.

The program's curriculum is extensive and culturally inclusive, with classes offered in both English and Spanish. From understanding portion sizes and the influence of cultural traditions on eating habits to smart shopping and reading food la-

bels, the classes are designed to be interactive and practical. Participants can expect engaging activities like food demonstrations and building a tangible dish with pen and paper, ensuring that the lessons learned are not only understood but also applied in real life.

For those unable to attend in person, resources are available in multiple languages, including Chinese, Vietnamese, English, and Spanish, ensuring that the program's reach extends far beyond the walls of the San Bernardino and Riverside community resource centers.

The 'Healthy Living: My Best Self' initiative doesn't stop at education; it's a gateway to a comprehensive suite of programs tailored to individual needs and goals. From managing diabetes and hypertension to adopting mindful living strategies for stress management, IEHP is committed to guiding each participant on their journey to optimal health. "We won't rest until our communities achieve optimal health," asserted the IEHP team.

In addition to the health education classes, IEHP is also proud to offer the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) – 'Live the Life You Love.'
