12 members of the police department were promoted, and were honored during a Promotion Ceremony held at the Rialto Playhouse on January 22.

n January 22nd at the Rialto Playhouse, 12 staff members with the Rialto Police Department were

promoted. These promotions were made possible by opening up positions that were closed or frozen, as well as recent retirements. The Rialto City Council has looked at staffing levels and

is looking for areas where increasing staff in the Police Department will have the greatest impact on the community and residents.

One thing that has changed with

these promotions is that the Police Department now has 5 lieutenants and there are plans to go back to having four area commands instead of splitting the city Promotions, cont. on next pg.

ver 250 community members attended the grand opening ceremony of the newly renovated San

Bernardino County Board of Education Dorothy Inghram Learning Center on Feb. 4.

Inghram, who was born and raised in San Bernardino, graduated from San Bernardino High

School in 1923. She graduated from San Bernardino Valley College in 1932 and wrote the school’s alma mater. In 1942, she was hired to teacher second grade at the Mill School, the first African American teacher in the

county.

an Bernardino Valley College’s baseball team is off to a swift start this season.

With inclement weather since the season began in early January, the team has still managed to win two of its three games.

Another player named Eddie Adams has been very impressive; he is definitely one to watch. We have had some good pitching performances by both right handed pitchers Cody Milner and Nate Mendoza,” continued Mierzwik.

“Our next (home) game is Tuesday, February 12, against Barstow, here at Valley College, at 2 PM. We are definitely hoping for some sunshine. The game is free and the community is welcome. We had a great turnout at our last home game; it’s nice for the team to receive community support,” concluded Mierzwik.

Promotions in half. These promotions allow Traffic and Operations, two large divisions of the department, to be given two other lieutenants and allow the workload to be more evenly distributed.

One of the new Lieutenants is Cameron Nelson, who has risen within the Rialto Police Department quickly. Lieutenant Nelson is most well known to the Rialto Community as the 1st Rialto Police Corporal at the time to lead the Community Policing program that exists today. Lieutenant Nelson “worked hard to use the resources at his disposal to create positive change for the community” said Rialto Resident Rick York.

Lieutenant Nelson will be continuing with the Traffic Division where he previously worked as a sergeant. Lieutenant Johnny Partida was promoted to Sergeant in 2012 and is now a part of the expanded leadership team and tasked with overseeing the Operations Division.

Three corporals have been promoted to the rank of sergeant: Lamont Quarker, Joseph Viola & Carla McCullogh.

At the January 22nd city council meeting City Councilman Ed Scott said that he couldn’t think of a more deserving person than Carla McCullogh. “She has been

with Rialto for a long time with some ups and downs; I knew she would be there!”

There were seven people promoted to the rank of corporal: Nicholas Parcher, Javier Pulido, Dwuan Rice, Anthony Quinonez, Ralph Ballew, Steven Wright and David Padilla. Corporal Javier Pulido has been leading the Pride Platoon program specifically designed to deal with “at-risk” youth. It utilizes proactive and innovative techniques for positive redirection. Overseen by Rialto Police personnel, the 14-week program offers treatment, prevention, and disciplinary components to alter negative behavior.

Corporal Dwuan Rice has worked in the community policing program and has led the program over the last year. Corporal Nicholas Parcher worked on the narcotics task force and was a regular face at local area command meetings. Corporal Parcher was not shy to answer residents’ questions or complaints.

“Getting here wasn’t easy, the whole process was difficult for them,” Chief Kling said. “There was an assessment center with 36 different assessment evaluators over a course of two weeks.”

The promoted personnel and newly hired officers will be introduced to the community at a city council meeting in February.

The promises of better jobs and improved living are not coming to fruition for working class San Bernardino residents. Instead, we have a precarious situation where thousands of warehouse workers are living at the poverty line and struggling to breathe.

Families, whose homes sit near freeways, railyards, and warehouses, are exposed to some of the worst air quality in the nation.

And sadly, very little has been done locally to address this concern.

Fortunately, we now have the chance to make decisions at a community level to improve our community’s air and address the root of the problem—indirect sources. AB 617’s passage in 2017 has required the South Coast Air Quality Management District to identify pollution sources and implement emission reduction plans to curtail health and safety impacts, while continuing air monitoring efforts to gauge the current levels of pollution. Our community understands the importance of air monitors.

However, the state of our social

and natural environment requires us to act swiftly to build on the momentum we already have.

After many years of advocacy, SCAQMD was convinced that it needed to create a rule-making process to closely look at the indirect sources of pollution at facilities. AB 617 provides us with a great opportunity to begin the work of creating a rule that prioritizes the people being mostly affected.

As warehouses continue to encroach on our land, more dangerous diesel particulate matter permeates the air. Residents like myself have been empowered to be a part of the AB 617 committee because we see a future beyond diesel. Band aid solutions presented by industry cannot be the priority anymore.

We can’t afford to continue to waste time on programs that stall progress. In order for AB 617 to be effective, air regulators must demonstrate through vigorous control of emissions that it means business when it comes to cleaning up our air.

Border security crisis Congress has a constitutional duty to protect states against invasion. President Trump has pointed out that nearly 2,000 inadmissible migrants come to our border everyday, and our immigration courts currently face a backlog of 800,000 cases. Congress has failed us and we have a crisis.

This is a humanitarian crisis with smugglers preying on women and children for profit. One in three women who make the dangerous journey to the U.S. border become victims of sexual assault along the way. Children have been found to have birth control pills in backpacks when border patrol agents have them for questioning. When

asked why, these girls as young as 10 or 11 said they were told by smugglers that they will be raped along the trek and this will avoid them getting pregnant. Last month, 20,000 children were smuggled into the U.S. illegally.

This is a national security crisis with ICE arresting 266,000 charged or convicted illegal migrants with criminal records over the last two years.

President Trump has requested funds for more border patrol agents, ICE personnel, immigration judges, humanitarian aid and medical support, and $5.7 billion for 234 miles of a steel barrier along the border. The political

games must stop so we can come together as Americans and secure the border.

Representative Pete Aguilar, I urge you to fulfill your constitutional duty, negotiate in good faith with Republicans, and support a border security plan that includes a physical barrier. I will be praying you use this scripture when at the table of negotiations and plans with our President and your colleagues from both parties.

NFL r etir ees: A bright spot in a sad pictur e

How many times have you been asked: What do you do for a living? Your answer to that question divulges a great deal about you.

Self-concept, self-worth and outlook are revealed by the impression you hope to communicate or strategy behind your response. We all quickly forecast how our answers will be perceived by others.

This is especially true for individuals who are retiring or “calling it quits� in the National Football League (NFL). They have a decision to make in answering such a question: live in the past or boldly and positively look to and plan for the future.

Many retiring NFL players are apparently having a very difficult time post- football. These athletes are moving from the bright spotlight to trying to illuminate what they see as a dimly lit life. Why? Many retired players are answering this question by defining themselves in the past. Because the very essence of their identities is caught up in their professional careers, statistics, and achievements, they are unable to productively move into the next chapter of their lives. The future for these individuals is held hostage by this outlook. The Sports Illustrated article, “Broken Men and the NFL’s Broken System: Why Life After the Game Is So Difficult,� outlines how lost these players are as they try to re-define who they have been for as long as they can remember—football players. This article and others like it describe their loss of identity and purpose, which has resulted in rampant divorce, drug and alcohol abuse, family dysfunction, and financial problems and bankruptcy for many NFL retirees.

Julius Thomas, the All-Pro tight end most remembered for his acrobatic receptions of passes thrown by Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, is a shining example of how to transition out of the NFL. Thomas has retired from his noteworthy professional career and is determined to make sure his current identity is

not defined by his career, the media, the fans, or living in accomplishments of the past.

Thomas left behind the limelight and a nationally known identity to pursue his next calling. What is different about him that sets him apart from his NFL counterparts who have gone before him? Julius has displayed three crucial elements in discerning the direction of this major life change: a driving motivation to serve others, a commitment to candid and thoughtful personal self-assessment, and a faith and trust in God that provides boldness and forward thinking. All three have contributed to a humble and confident metamorphosis of vocational callings for Thomas.

Matt Dunn, writing in “What We Learn About Self Identity From Julius Thomas,� states that Thomas realized that “at a deeper level there was a longing for purpose found in helping others.� He plans on earning a doctorate degree in psychology to do further research on the effects of head injuries in contact sports, which cause brain trauma and changes in neurobehavior. He believes that he is to aid his retiring or retired NFL peers who might be affected by these conditions. Julius is committed to testimonials of service and moving beyond being recognized as a famous NFL receiver.

Thomas describes it as a yearning and a heartfelt call to assist others.

Devotion to serving is the motivating purpose in his life. This is contrasted with the cars, homes, toys, and all the accoutrements of the NFL “life.� As he reflected on his life, he realized that these things never did bring meaning to his deepest desires.

Upon his retirement, Julius wrote a reflective essay titled, “Journey Into Self,� in which he took time to “check in� with himself. He shared his thoughts by stating, “I took stock of where I was in life and what was important to me.� Thomas decided to move beyond the externals of life and look within. As he “peeled back the masks,� he accepted that his identity was not Julius the

wide receiver. There were many facets of who he was that he was never vulnerable enough with himself to explore and then embrace. He studied Socrates, Aquinas, Eckhart Tolle, Brene Brown, George Mumford, David Hawkins, Dr. King, and the Scriptures. Through sincere self-assessment, he delved into his passions, interests, fears, relationships, and hopes, and contemplated what really brings meaning to life. Thomas moved confidently forward after football due to the role self-assessment played in deciphering his direction in this new chapter of life.

In “For Broncos' Thomas, Faith Drives His Football,� Paul Klee states that Thomas had two playbooks while with the Broncos: the football playbook and his Bible. A verse important to him is 2 Timothy 1: 7, which reads “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.� With the Lord’s help, Thomas believes that he can boldly step out of football knowing that his identity is not defined by the pigskin. He knows that he is a special creation in the Lord’s sight. Julius trusts God for his daily life and his future.

Thomas is convinced that the Lord directs the heart and is confident that He will work through him to faithfully serve his peers in this new capacity and calling.

It is so easy to be defined by past achievements or one’s career, especially for professional athletes.

In making a major shift in vocational calling, Julius Thomas has demonstrated a personal identity based in a commitment to service, true self-knowledge, and an unswerving trust in his Heavenly Father. He has discerningly and confidently transitioned from an illustrious NFL career to a calling of being devoted to bettering the lives of his NFL colleagues.

Panama is a narrow country of mountains, rain forests and flat lowlands. It is 50 miles at its narrowest and 120 miles at its widest.

The Panama Canal cuts the country in half.

have fond memories of Panama. Primarily because I lectured on cruise ships 15 times while going through the Panama Canal. Noriega, Carter, Reagan, France, U.S.A., Roosevelt, all were involved in its history.

Christopher Columbus is recorded as giving the land the name of Panama (1502). It means “an abundance of fish.” Balboa was the explorer that first crossed the isthmus and saw the Pacific Ocean.

The first signs of human settlements in Panama go back about 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. Seven different Native American cultures can be clearly identified today. The four largest are Embera, the Kuna, the Mayans, and the Ngobe-Bugle Indians.

When the New Spain developed

Figuratively Panama forms a land bridge between North and South America. Amazingly it doesn’t lie north and south, but east and west, in an S shape.

A digression. It is impossible to describe Panama without mentioning the Panama Canal.

There were three attempts prior to its success. In 1529, a Spanish priest drew the first plans for a country but Spain refused to build a canal that would benefit other countries.

In 1811, Alexander von Huarlsoldt designed another plan, but lacked the technology to build it.

Then came 1870 and a Frenchman. Its history began in 1870 with the advent of the French with Ferdinand de Lesseps, the builder of the Suez Canal. He expected to create a miracle with a Canal in Panama. He failed miserably. His company’s workers lost 22,000 because of disease; mosquitos, malaria, measles, smallpox. His company went bankrupt. The project stopped dead.

Enter Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. He dreamed of a Panama Canal that would enhance the world’s view of the United States.

BUT, there were two obstacles.

Panama was a part of Colombia and Lesseps owned the rights. His ingenuity solved both.

The next stage was with President Jimmy Carter. He set the date of relinquishing control of the Canal for December 31, 1999. On January 1, 2000 the Chinese took over and have more locks, painted old buildings and built new ones.

I’ve seen them all.

First, he catered to the rebels in Panama that wanted independence from Colombia. He sent the USS Nashville warship that confronted Colombia who backed off and Panama became a recognized country.

Construction on the Panama Canal expansion project, which included a third set of locks, began in September 2007. It was finished May 2016 and began commercial operation on 26 June 2016. The new locks allow transit of larger, New Panamax ships, which have a greater cargo capacity than the previous locks were capable of handling.

Second, he paid off Lesseps who invested $300 million dollars in his venture and sold his rights to the United States for $40 million dollars.

Then a treaty was signed with the Republic of Panama for $10,000 dollars and $250,000 per year in perpetuity.

Teddy went to work. He got rid of the mosquitoes, brought a team of doctors to care for the workers.

Established church services, movie theaters, entertainment, baseball fields, boxing and education classes. Most of the workers were from Barbados, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Cuba.

He started the Canal in 1904 and it was finished on August 15, 1914. The steamer ANCON was the first ship through the Canal.

The Darien Gap is the southern 100 miles of Panama, ending at the Colombian border. It is considered the most dangerous area on earth. Vicious criminals inhabit and the military and police avoid it.

Jaguars dominate the land, poisonous snakes, the swamps prevail and the jungles are thick, the sun does not penetrate the trees.

Even the indigenous native Indians avoid it. Travelers should avoid it at all costs.

In contrast, the beaches rival Cancun and Miami; the luxuries of Panama City, the Spanish architecture and the food is a mixture of Latin America, African,

Caribbean and native flavors.

Baseball was introduced by President Teddy Roosevelt and it still dominates the interest of Panamanians.

Panama City is called the Miami of the South. So it is, in many ways. Especially the economy.

Four percent of global trade passes through the Panama Canal.

Its economy is one of the highest in Latin American. Public investments, planned construction, farming-especially fruits, - and private investments, should also remain strong. Obviously, the Canal is the main source of the economy.

Poverty prevails in rural areas, most of it is inhabited by indigenous people. However, Panama has made significant progress in reducing poverty in recent years.

The government has a 5-year strategy to increase their economy. They are: 1. Enhancing productivity and diversifying growth; 2. Enhancing quality of life; 3.

Strengthening human capital; 4.

Improving infrastructure; 5. Improving environmental sustainability, including management.

In the 15 cruises I have been on through the Canal, I have witnessed a definite growth in Panama’s economy.

Caden Henderson and mom Jill attended the Blue Carpet premiere of the LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part this past Saturday.

T

his past Saturday the highly anticipated LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part had its “blue carpet” premier and I was lucky enough to attend and interview some of the stars!

Despite heavy rain, the carpet still went on and the set up was full of LEGO Movie character posters and everything LEGOs. A few minutes in the stars arrived taking pictures and talking to the media. I got to interview and hear

the actors talk about the movie, including Chris Pratt, Ben Schwartz, Elizabeth Banks, Jadon Sand and more! All the celebrities were very nice and seemed very excited to see the movie right after the carpet.

Overall, the blue carpet made for a great experience and I had a great time talking to so many big stars all in one day. The LEGO Movie 2 hits theaters February 8th, so go check it out at your

local theater!

Remembering Sonny and his battle with leukemia

T

he brightest smile, quirkiest laugh, and luminous brown eyes describe my little brother Sonny. His little heart is forever filled with love and a huge personality; always so talkative, mischievous, smart, but most of all, he was brave.

After weeks of hospital visits and being sent home numerous times, doctors finally caught it. On Jan. 16, 2003, Sonny was diagnosed with leukemia; three months after celebrating his third birthday.

He was treated at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital (LLUCH), where he received treatment for eight days, before being sent home due to the progress he was making.

In the meantime, Sonny was still up to his old tricks, having fullfledged conversations and playing, while adjusting to his life as a cancer patient.

One night Sonny became very sick. He jumped out of bed (with his Spiderman slippers on) and ran to the bathroom, because he was throwing up. About an hour later Sonny was in an ambulance and

rushed to LLUCH because his fingers and lips were turning blue.

Before leaving his home, Sonny was talking and said, “I’m okay,” but after the 6-mile drive to the hospital, Sonny was no longer responsive.

On Feb. 6, 2003, Sonny went to heaven.

Doctors and nurses at LLUCH did everything they could to save Sonny; he passed away of an infection he quickly developed while battling leukemia, at the age of three.

Sonny made a huge impact on my family’s and my lives.

At three years old, Sonny had his phone number memorized, his favorite color was blue, he loved visiting Las Vegas and wanted to be a “motorcycle guy” when he grew up. Spiderman was his favorite superhero and he loved the movie Shrek.

Although it’s been 16 years since Sonny’s passing, our family and friends continue to share funny stories and memories of him and he often comes up in conversation; because he talked like he was an adult. He truly lived an eventful

life.

My family and I have been active members of the Childhood Cancer Foundation of Southern California (CCFSC) organization for over 16 years and we plan to keep the support going for many years to come.

This year CCFSC is presenting its annual Childhood Cancer Kids Walk in memory of Sonny and he’ll be representing the childhood cancer community through promotional materials and the organizations website.

I will forever use my voice and whatever platform I have to spread awareness about cancer and cancer organizations.

Currently, the CCFSC has a Parent Pantry for parents staying bedside with their child as they receive treatment at the hospital.

They need help from our communities to fill their food pantry with non-perishable food and snacks.

or more than a decade, the Valley-Bound Commitment Program provides a tuition-free first year of college to eligible high school students from across the Inland Empire. Thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation, 25 more students will benefit from the initiative.

The cost of the Valley-Bound Commitment Program, which also receives major funding from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, is approximately $1,000 per student. The goal of the program is to remove all economic barriers of the first year of college so students can concen-

trate on their studies. In addition to covering the cost of classes and fees, students also receive educational guidance and support from SBVC faculty and staff.

"The Valley-Bound Commitment Program is a successful model that helps students through educational counseling, learning communities, tutoring, a summer bridge, textbooks, and required service to the community," said San Bernardino Valley College Director of Development and Community Relations Karen Childers..

Hundreds of students have benefitted from Valley-Bound

since the program was founded in 2008. Studies have shown that students who participate not only achieve higher grades than their peers, but also continue their education beyond their first year at a higher rate than students that do not take part in such a program.

"The overarching goal of the Valley-Bound Commitment Program is to increase the college completion rate in our region,” said Childers. “This program helps produce a more educated, skilled, and qualified workforce to aid in the continued economic wellbeing of our community."

he San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will return to the historic California Theatre of the Performing Arts February 9th for the fourth installment of their widelypraised 2018-19 concert season.

This creative concert concept originated with audience members who recalled their love of classical music being fostered in front of the Saturday morning cartoons.

The conductor for this concert is Maestro Ming Luke, the eighth talented contender in the Symphony’s two year-long music director search. The extremely versatile Luke has excited audiences around the world conducting the Bolshoi Orchestra in Moscow, performances of Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella at the Kennedy Center, at Sadler’s Wells with Birmingham Royal, conducting Dvorak’s Requiem in Dvorak Hall in Prague, recording scores for the 2017 Francis Ford Coppola film “Torch”, and over a hundred performances at the San Francisco War Memorial with San Francisco Ballet. He has been recognized nationally for his work with music education and has designed and conducted education concerts and programs with organizations such as the Berkeley Symphony, Houston Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic, San Francisco Opera and others.

This family friendly concert will include a selection of memorable music including Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture, Strauss’s Overture to Fledermaus featured in Tom and Jerry at the Hollywood Bowl, Rossini’s Overture to Barber of Seville featured in The Rabbit of Seville, and two pieces by Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain featured in Fantasia and Pictures at an Exhibition.

To complete the 90th season, on April 13, 2019, the Orchestra will present Celestial Sounds. Guest conductor David Cubek will lead a space-age evening of music including Holst’s haunting The Planets, Ravel’s glorious Sunrise, and Williams’ soaring Star Wars Suite. Agreement between local universities creates nursing degree pathway

iverside City College (RCC), California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) and California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) creating a pathway for students to earn an associate degree in Nursing at RCC while concurrently earning a bachelor of science degree in Nursing (BSN) with either CSUF or CSUSB. All classes will occur online or on the RCC campus.

The concurrent enrollment ADN-to-BSN program will launch in fall 2019.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks California highest in need of skilled registered nurses.

RCC, CSUF and CSUSB are confident that this pathway will offset the nursing shortage, especially in the counties of Riverside, Orange and San Bernardino. The ADN-toBSN program removes unnecessary barriers of access, time and costs for nursing students.

RCC’s School of Nursing offers an associate degree in Nursing/Registered Nursing as well as programs in Nursing Assistant and Vocational Nursing.

CSUSB offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing while CSUF offers a School Nurse Services

Credential (SNSC) and a Post SNSC Master of Science in Nursing.

“Riverside City College is committed to solving critical workforce needs, including providing qualified nursing professionals,” Gregory Anderson, RCC president, said. “That’s why we are proud to partner with CSUSB and CSUF to create this smooth pathway that leads directly to the BSN and good jobs.”

The idea is to create a workforce of ready graduates, thereby increasing the number of nursing professionals in the tri-county area. The program will provide students a direct, concurrent and streamlined pathway between RCC and either CSUF or CSUSB. Students will take classes in prerequisite and general education at RCC, leading to concurrent enrollment into both the RCC and one of the CSU nursing programs.

After graduating from RCC, they will complete their final semester of studies at either CSUF or CSUSB, resulting in a bachelor degree in Nursing. The MOU establishes procedures for program governance, admission procedures and operation of student financial aid as well as sharing of classroom and resources, such as simulation labs and libraries.

California State Senator Richard Roth, D-Riverside, has been an early advocate for an ADN-toBSN program. The senator actively engaged his staff and educational leadership in the development of this model program in order to meet the healthcare needs of the region.

“Inland Southern California is experiencing a surge in its economy and population as the region

veers into a public health crisis,” Roth said. “We need to ensure we have the health care infrastructure in place to meet the looming needs. This innovative pilot program addresses that need by driving more bachelor's degree nurses into medically underserved regions like Inland Southern California, delivering health care where it is needed most.”

The Nursing program at RCC was established in 1957 and re-

ceived its first California Board of Registered Nursing approval in 1958. The program received its National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission accreditation in 1981. In recent years, the program has been nationally recognized as the second largest ADN program in the state, with more than 400 full-time nursing students and a 95 percent completion rate and 94 percent pass rate on the national licensing exam.
