In a revealing briefing hosted by Ethnic Media Services on January 18 titled "Fighting Substance Abuse –The Center at Sierra Health Foundation Highlights Breakthroughs in Prevention and Recovery," industry experts came together to address the alarming rise in substance abuse and overdose deaths in California, while showcasing transformative approaches to prevention and recovery

Kaying Hang of The Center at Sierra Health Foundation pointed out the grim reality that California saw over 109,000 overdose deaths in 2022, a figure staggering enough to fill the Sacramento Kings arena "Overdose is now the leading cause of non-elderly death in the state, signaling a dire need for a shift in how we address

substance abuse," stated Hang Reflecting on the past, Hang highlighted the decades of mass incarceration and stigma faced by drug users, particularly in the 80s and 90s However, she brought a message of hope, noting that "the tide is turning, showing the government that the best way forward is care over incarceration "

Sandy Close of Ethnic Media Services emphasized that while substance abuse and recovery may not traditionally attract philanthropic attention, The Center has been pioneering in promoting care over criminalization Close also underscored the impact of substances like fentanyl in unincorporated areas of the Central Valley, a concern echoed by Marie Perez Ruiz of the Central Valley Empowerment Alliance

Ruiz shed light on the plight of farmworker communities in the Central Valley,

where over 5,000 people live in over 700 decaying dwellings "These communities, predominantly comprised of indigenous, Mexican, and Filipino farmworkers, have been overlooked despite their vulnerability," Ruiz stated She elaborated on the launch of a rural equity community campaign aimed at empowering these marginalized groups

Addressing the nationwide crisis, Arlene Brown, serving the Bishop community primarily composed of Native Americans, highlighted that "Native Americans have some of the highest overdose rates Decolonizing services is crucial – tailoring them to resonate with our culture and address our unique needs "

Braunz Courtney, focusing on the disproportionate impact on Black and African American communities, especially in Oakland, emphasized the impor-

tance of meeting individuals where they are "It's not just about offering help; it's about understanding their goals, whether that's accessing sterile drug use syringes or more comprehensive support Our panelists' services, including syringe service programs and drop-in centers, are making a tangible difference, helping people reverse overdoses and reclaim their lives," said Courtney

The briefing brought to the forefront the critical work being done by The Center at Sierra Health Foundation and its partners, highlighting the shift from punitive measures to holistic, culturally-sensitive care As these leaders continue to champion innovative approaches to substance abuse prevention and recovery, the message is clear: understanding, compassion, and tailored support are key to turning the tide in this crisis

In America's educational landscape, the dual enrollment program stands as a significant opportunity for African American students, meriting attention well before middle school This initiative, allowing high schoolers to experience college-level courses, is more than an academic advantage; it's a crucial empowerment tool

Enrollment in these programs offers African American students an invaluable head start In a country grappling with educational disparities, this early exposure to college coursework is transformative, leveling the playing field and offering a glimpse into post-secondary education

The benefits are not just academic Economically, dual enrollment can be a game-changer It confronts the daunting issue of college affordability head-on, making higher education more accessible to families for whom it might otherwise remain out of reach This aspect is particularly crucial, given the disproportionate impact of student loan debt on African American communities

The cultural implications of dual enrollment are profound By immersing students in the college environment earlier, it demystifies higher education, equipping them with the confidence to navigate what can be an intimidating landscape This experience is invaluable for African American students, who might not have extensive family histories in higher education and are often subject to stereotypes and lowered expectations Through dual enrollment, these students can redefine narratives around their educational capabilities and aspirations

However, to fully harness the potential of dual enrollment, proactive engagement is essential African American families and educators must be aware of these opportunities and integrate them into their educational planning It's about having early discussions regarding post secondary educational and career goals, with dual enrollment forming a core part of these conversations

But the broader question extends beyond individual families and educational institutions It's

February is American Heart Month, which is a great opportunity to discuss heart disease, which remains the number one killer in the United States

Some of the most common conditions that contribute to heart disease are high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity When these conditions are left unmanaged, they can lead to heart attacks, stroke and other serious health issues The good news is that there’s a lot that can be done to reduce heart disease risk factors

Five Tips to Improve your Heart Health

Tip #1 –Get screened Schedule your annual physical exam to have your blood

about how we, as a society, can implement dual enrollment in a way that maximizes its accessibility and effectiveness for African American students How do we ensure that every student who could benefit from this program has the opportunity to do so? The potential for change is immense – not just in terms of academic outcomes, but in shaping more inclusive, empowered futures for entire communities

As we consider the path forward, the role of dual enrollment in shaping equitable educational landscapes becomes increasingly clear It's more than just a step in the right direction; it's a powerful stride towards a future where educational success and access are realities for every student, irrespective of their background

In this context, dual enrollment is not just an option but a necessity, a catalyst for profound and lasting change in the African American community and beyond The true measure of its success will be how effectively we can bring this opportunity to those who stand to gain the most from it

pressure and blood levels checked Lab work can reveal issues with cholesterol, diabetes and other important health conditions that can be managed with lifestyle changes or medications Once your results are in, you can work with your doctor on a personalized plan to improve your heart health

Tip #2- Embrace a healthy diet Fuel your body with foods that are nutritious such as lean proteins, fiber, fresh fruit, vegetables and nuts It’s important to limit processed foods that contain trans and saturated fats, foods with high cholesterol, high in sodium and products with added sugars

Tip #3 - Exercise regularly According to the American Heart Association, exercising 30 minutes a day for five days a week

can improve your heart health and reduce heart disease risk factors

Daily exercise can be as simple as going for a daily walk, hiking, running, joining a gym or finding workouts online that can be done at home Try different activities and develop a routine that works for your lifestyle

Tip #4 – If you smoke, learn how you can stop Smoking is a major risk factor that contributes to heart disease Smoking causes arteries to become swollen and restrict blood flow to the heart, which increases the risk of heart attack and stroke

Tip #5 – Manage your stress Stress can cause high blood pressure, which can affect your heart’s ability to function To manage your stress, learn deep breathing,

yoga, exercise or find a relaxing hobby to ease tension

Also, studies have found that not getting enough sleep can increase your stress levels Establish a regular bedtime routine and put your cell phone on silent to reduce interruptions in your rest

Don’t skip a beat, make your heart health a priority I encourage everyone to take simple steps that can improve how you feel and your overall quality of life

From diagnosis, treatment to recovery, the Redlands Community Hospital cardiopulmonary department can help you reduce your risk factors and improve your health To learn more, visit: redlandshospital org/services/cardiology

With referrals coming from doctors and various health plan departments, the program addresses a myriad of health concerns, with a particular focus on weight management "Our classes don't just educate; they empower individuals to take charge of their health, whether it's by making informed food choices, managing chronic conditions, or understanding the importance of mindfulness in their daily lives," Loya emphasized

Chelsey Curry-Felix, Health Educator II at IEHP, highlighted the uniqueness of the initiative "What sets our classes apart is the approach we take It's not just about what's right or wrong in terms of diet; it's about giving people the knowledge and the space to celebrate their progress and incorporate mindful eating into their daily routine," Curry-Felix explained

As the Children's Theatre Company (CTC) prepares itself for the grand return of "Alice in Wonderland," anticipation fills the air This timeless tale is set to captivate audiences from February 13 through March 31, 2024, on the UnitedHealth Group Stage Artistic Director Peter C Brosius, a Riverside native and a beacon of creativity in the theatrical world, is at the forefront of this enchanting production

With an opening night scheduled for Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 7 p m , the stage is set for a journey through a land of whimsy and wonder

Brosius' journey to the director's chair is a tale as compelling as the productions he orchestrates From his formative years in Riverside, where he embraced the magic of theater at local establishments like the San

Bernardino Civic Light Opera, to his profound familial ties to the arts, his path has been marked by passion and perseverance "My mother, Marion Bifford, was an actress on stage at the Riverside Community Players (which is celebrating its 100th year anniversary) and a huge force in encouraging me to be part of theater," Brosius shares, reminiscing about the pivotal role his family played in his artistic development The dinner table discussions that quickly turned into dashes to the theater are among his cherished memories, fueling his dedication to the craft

The allure of Riverside's cultural and culinary landscape also left an indelible mark on Brosius Fond memories of dining at local favorites like Sr George's Smorgasbord after church or grabbing a bite at Shakey's Pizza paint a vivid picture of his roots

These experiences, combined with the scenic beauty of

places like Fairmount Park, Mt Rubidoux, and the citrus-laden groves, form the backdrop of his early life and inspiration

"Our Alice in Wonderland features an extraordinary scenic and costume design by the remarkable Skip Mercier," Brosius states, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that defines CTC's approach The production, adapted for the stage by Sharon Holland with music by Victor Zupanc, promises to be a feast for the senses Audiences can expect a world of illusion, surprise, and hilarity, where Alice's adventures are not just witnessed but experienced, thanks to a cast that interacts with the audience, breaking the fourth wall and inviting everyone into Alice's ever-curious world

The ensemble cast features a blend of adult and student performers, bringing fresh energy and perspective to this beloved story The creative team, led by Brosius and including industry luminaries like Sharon Holland, Victor Zupanc, and GW Mercier, has crafted a production that honors Lewis Carroll's original vision while infusing it with contemporary vitality

From the whimsical sets and costumes to the innovative sound and movement direction, every aspect of the production is meticulously designed to transport audiences down the rabbit hole

As the CTC prepares for this thrilling production, Brosius' message to aspiring artists resonates with the essence of his own journey: "Make work Don't wait for the right moment You do not want to spend your life waiting " It's a testament to his belief in the transformative power of theater and a reminder that the journey from Riverside to Wonderland is paved with determination, creativity, and the magic of the stage

Tickets for "Alice in Wonderland" are available online at childrenstheatre org/alice or by calling the ticket office at 612 874 0400, with prices starting at $15 The production, best suited for everyone aged 6 and up, promises a mesmerizing experience, inviting audiences to embrace the extraordinary and embark on a journey that's curiouser and curiouser
