T

he Arroyo Valley High School (AVHS) varsity softball team made school history on Saturday, May 30 when it beat San Bernardino High School (SBHS) 8-5 to earn the school’s first-ever CIF Championship. In a thrilling extra-inning showdown

between two San Bernardino City Unified School District rivals, Arroyo Valley High emerged victorious over San Bernardino High. The nail-biting contest, held at the Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine, showcased the talent, determination and resilience of both teams, with neither side willing to back down. After battling through seven innings tied, the Hawks broke through in extra innings to secure the

championship victory. While Arroyo Valley celebrated the title, both schools demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and represented SBCUSD with pride on one of high school softball’s biggest stages. “It’s a first in so many ways. ore San Bernardino County families may now qualify for free or low-cost early learning programs as California expands transitional kindergarten and local education leaders work to connect parents with options before their children enter kindergarten. kindergarten, or UPK, as a way to help families understand the early education choices available from birth to age 5, when children’s brains are developing most rapidly. Heather Smith, director for early education and development with San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, said UPK is not one program. It is an umbrella of early learning and care options that can include transitional kindergarten, state

preschool, Head Start, Early Head Start, licensed family child care providers and care from family, friends and neighbors. “Universal pre-kindergarten is really an avenue that we are using to help families recognize what their choices are so that they can choose a setting that is best for them and their child,” Smith said.
