an Bernardino High School’s Mr. Cardinal pageant at first glance may seem like a popularity contest to many. However, behind the competition and on-stage pressure, lies a greater purpose.

“This has built community leaders,” pageant coordinator Jaime Rios said. “People speak about the city being torn up and being this and that, but there is growth here. What I’m doing with these young men is promoting the city through volunteerism.”

On April 9, approximately twelve young men will strut across the Sturges Center for the Arts in Downtown to participate in the 13th annual pageant. They will participate in a series of events--from a formal wear competition to a question and answer run.

The dozen or so peer counselors and leaders of the Youth Action Project (YAP), Inland Congregations United for Change (ICUC), and Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement (COPE) held the conference at San Bernardino Valley College on March 10 after associating mental health as a number one concern for adolescents and young adults in San Bernardino.

“Through this collaborative effort, we wanted to focus on specific issues dealing with mental health,” said YAP peer counselor Rocio Aguayo. “We believe this correlates with the school to prison pipeline that plagues our communities. We need to have a discussion as to how we can receive more resources or implement policy changes to better address the issue.”
