he Avila Brothers Bobby and IZ, both Colton natives who later moved to Rialto, have a passion and successful track record in music.

The pair have had mega musical success of their own and have written, produced and performed with everyone from Janet Jackson, to Gwen Stefani, Usher and even Earth Wind & Fire… just to name a few.

Bobby is a vocalist, songwriter, producer and musician; while IZ is a DJ, songwriter, producer and musician.

According to an official press release, the Avila Brothers worked on seven songs on Usher’s Confessions album, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart and sold 1.1 million in its first week and also won a Grammy for Best R&B Album of the Year.

The Avila Brothers produced and wrote seven songs for Chaka Kahn’s release entitled ‘Funk This’, which won The Avila’s two Grammys for Best R&B Album of the Year and Best R&B Song written by the brothers.

“That came about in the studio around late 2003, Usher came through and we met for the first time. We were just playing music, we hit it off and just hung out before we made music. We got into his head to figure out the direction of his music, and finally came back to the studio after three or four weeks. After going through the process we ended up doing the first song which was “Truth Hurts” and it set the tone for everything; we had about seven records on the album,” said IZ.

Despite the brother’s success, what’s most important to them is inspiring the youth.

“I think what’s most important is that these kids out here in the Inland Empire know that it’s possible to go beyond any limitations. To know that us two Mexican American guys came out of the same area and we were able to go beyond the Inland Empire, be influential and make an impact around the world is proof to everyone that they can achieve something big,” said Bobby Ross Avila.

The brothers have continuously given back to the Inland Empire since their careers took off over 30 years ago.

IZ who has been inducted into Eisenhower High School’s Hall of fame and recently donated many instruments to the school’s music department.

“It’s only mandatory that we give back to our community. I think when you do that

you’re helping the next generation achieve what you’ve been able to achieve. Coming out of the Inland Empire…there’s not a lot of hope to achieve success. When you have success, the best you can do is give back to help others on their journey,” said IZ. The pair who have toured with New Kids on the Block, say they had to work even harder early on in their career to overcome adversity.

“When I was 12 years old I was signed to the urban department at RCA Records. The question was always, ‘How do we market this guy?’ Executives would say they didn't think a black DJ should be on a showcase with me. They didn’t really know how to market a ‘Mexican’ artist. What does ethnicity have to do with good music?” said Bobby.

Speaking of good music…Bobby is mak-

ing his first solo record in about 20 years; with a single being released in late 2018 or early 2019.

“I got the eye of the tiger. I’m ready to make a huge impact. It’s going to be a combination of musical influences, ala Prince, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder; while including rap and a flare of today’s current sounds,” Bobby said.

The Avila Brothers have had a tremendous career from making certified platinum hits, to being the original co-founders of Beats by Dre headphones, to IZ landing a small role in the original Spiderman movie.

With so much left to give, Bobby and IZ, vow to continue making their hometown proud.

Stop building warehouses near our homes, schools

magine buying a home for you and your family, only to find out years later that the land directly behind you was being seriously considered for a 344,000 square foot warehouse— the equivalent of six football fields—less than 200 feet away from your door. This is the reality for residents in Bloomington and a clear reminder of how some elements of the warehouse industry continue to hurt working families in the Inland Empire.

As legislators, we are proponents of continuing to build a strong local and state economy. A healthy economic base helps to drive our wages upward and allows us to provide for our families, but simply building another massive warehouse in the Inland Empire will not create community wealth. In fact, the Inland Empire is already one of the nation’s largest warehouse hubs and yet we still have the lowest per capita income in the state of California.

If warehouses created community wealth, the economic outcomes for our residents would be vastly different than the reality they face.

We cannot continue to allow logistics to take precedence over our working families. If we have to choose between building yet another giant warehouse in the Inland Empire or protecting the quality of life of our residents, we will always stand with local residents. Developers should not be able to lobby county leaders and change land zoning from residential to commercial so that they can make a substantial profit at the expense of our community members’ health and economic well-being. Sufficient land zoned for commercial development already exists well away from residential communities in San Bernardino County. Expanding warehouses in the Inland Empire will certainly grow truck traffic in our neighborhoods and communities and will further increase the spread of dangerous pollutants in our air—and ultimately hurt our children and families. Air pollution in our region is driven largely by the warehouse industry and contributes to 609 deaths and 1,371 major health incidents per year causing negative economic impacts for communities like Bloomington. With the move-

ment of diesel trucks in and out of warehouses in residential communities, children in schools and daycare centers are exposed to toxic diesel emissions that have long term impacts on their health well into adulthood.

The approval of the proposed warehouse in Bloomington by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors will further erode our quality of life and have serious health impacts on the hardworking community that will be most directly impacted by this project.

Furthermore, it will directly disregard the fact that over 75 percent of Bloomington residents do not want warehouses built near homes, according to a new report conducted by IE2030—an Inland Empire community driven economic development collective that randomly sampled the preferences of residents in Bloomington in September 2017.

We believe that, in order to help our region continue to grow, local leaders in the Inland Empire need to help build an economy that works for everyone by supporting industries with good paying jobs, investing in small businesses, and advocating for high-growth startups.

The strength of the Inland Empire lies in our local residents, so we must empower them by helping to bring in quality jobs that actually support families and communities—not perpetuate the status quo that prioritizes profits and the ‘any job will do’ mentality, over our community that deserves better. We are not against warehouses, but we believe that they do not belong immediately adjacent to homes or schools where the health impacts would be most damaging and long lasting to children and families. The residents of Bloomington—as everyone else in the Inland Empire and California—deserve cleaner air and to not live just feet away from an enormous warehouse that will do little to help strengthen our local economy and uplift our neighbors, particularly as the quality of warehouse jobs continue to erode and the community is stuck with the negative environmental effects. We must reject the false choice that the residents of the Inland Empire must choose between either good jobs or clean air. The residents of our communities demand and deserve both.

Slover Distribution Center will help brighten Bloomington’s futur e

or the past four years, the County of San Bernardino has hosted a series of community meetings to discuss the Countywide Plan and the future of Bloomington. In surveys taken at these meetings, the vast majority of residents have made it clear that they want enhanced services and opportunities to work and shop in their own community. There was an acknowledgment that over the years, the community has become inundated by illegal businesses, including unpermitted trucking facilities and unpermitted vendors. To combat this trend, residents have asked for increased Sheriff’s patrols and Code Enforcement. The Bloomington Municipal Advisory Council (MAC) understands that if we want to develop a thriving community, we need to support new development that will help fund our future.

The Bloomington MAC understands the challenges that come with growth. That is why we have insisted that new developments, like the Slover Distribution Center, must be required to invest heavily in the community through carefully crafted agreements.

1. The project is located on Slover Avenue, an established industrial corridor in both Fontana and Rialto. The property directly

to the west is already zoned industrial, and if a warehouse were proposed on that land, it would be permitted by right. With all these factors in mind, the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) concluded that this area was not suitable for residential development. Even the County’s staff report acknowledged the project is consistent with community policy and “would be consistent with the existing patterns of land use and development.�

2. The project’s Health Risk Assessment determined that local air quality impacts are below all threshold levels, and the project is consistent with the County’s Greenhouse Gas Emission requirements. The study concluded that there would be no significant health impacts related to the project and emissions would be well below the threshold for sensitive receptors. The project is so innocuous that the Air Quality Management District did not comment on the EIR. 3. Truck access will be limited to Slover Avenue, keeping trucks away from Bloomington High School. The project will contribute nearly $200,000 in school-related fees to the Colton Joint Unified School District and provide for a “Safe Routes to School� sidewalk project next to the high school. Additionally, this project will contribute to the installation of a traffic signal on Slover Avenue at Linden Avenue, which will contribute to the safety of our school children.

All healthy cities have a mix of commercial, residential and industrial uses. Most cities

have between 20-25% of their land zoned for industrial use.

Bloomington currently has less than 12% zoned industrial, well below the average.

In addition to the increased property tax revenue for the County, school district, and Rec & Park District, the project will be required to pay an additional $30,000 per year for enhanced services in Bloomington. These funds will allow for an increased effort to curb the actual environmental threat to the community – illegal and unpermitted trucking.

There are more than one hundred illegal truck facilities all throughout Bloomington. Many are next to schools, homes, and in residential neighborhoods.

These facilities do not meet environmental standards, they do not pay their fair share of property taxes, and they operate outside of local regulations. We have asked and will continue to ask our local and state legislators for help to address the real threat to our community. Rather than oppose what the community and the County have worked so hard on for years, we would ask for partnerships that help build investment in our community. We need solutions, not political rhetoric. We believe that projects like the Slover Distribution center can be a building block for a better community.

I have lived in Bloomington for 54 years. I have raised my children and grandchildren here in the community. I am fully invested in Bloomington, and I want to see it grow for the next generation.

He demanded money. The priest said, “Sorry, my friend, I don’t have any money on me. I’m a priest.” The robber jerked the priest’s coat and saw his collar. He immediately said, “Oh, I’m sorry, Father, forgive me.” The priest complied with forgiveness and offered a cigar to the robber. But the robber said, “I’m sorry Father, I can’t take it, I’ve given up cigars for LENT.” The crowd roared.

If the Rabbi won, the Jews could stay. Since the Pope didn’t speak Hebrew and the Rabbi didn’t speak Italian, the debate was silent.

The Pope raised 3 fingers, the Rabbi one. Next the Pope waves his fingers around his head, the Rabbi pointed to the ground.

The Pope then brought out a wafer and a challis of wine. The Rabbi pulled out an apple. The Pope declared he was beaten.

When asked, the Pope explained.

“First, I raised 3 fingers, for the Trinity. The Rabbi countered with one, meaning one God. Second, I circled my head meaning God ruled the heavens. The Rabbi pointed down meaning the earth as well. When I held the elements of the Eucharist the Rabbi took out an apple, meaning the Fall of Adam and Eve. He won.”

Meanwhile, the Jewish community was gathered around the Rabbi. “How did you win the debate?” they asked.

“I haven’t a clue,” said the Rabbi. “First, he said to me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I gave him the finger!

Then he tells me that the whole country must be cleared of Jews and I said to him we’re staying right here.” “And then what?” asked a woman. “Who knows?” said the Rabbi, “He took out his lunch. So, I took out mine.”

It seems that people never get tired of jokes about blondes. Here are some I’ve received. Two tourists were driving through Texas. As they were approaching the town of Nacogdoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch.

As they stood at the counter, one tourist asked the blonde employee, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are. . .very slowly?”

The blonde girl leaned over the counter and said, very slowly, “Burrrrrrr-gerrrrrr, Kinnnnnggg.”

Two blondes are walking down the street. One notices a compact on the sidewalk and leans down to pick it up. She opens it, looks in the mirror and says, “Hmm, this person looks familiar.”

The second blonde says, “Here, let me see!” So, the first blonde

hands her the compact. The second one looks in the mirror and says, “You dummy, it’s me!”

maid quit. Finally, they could not take the stench any longer and decided sell the house.

This is the story of an ex-wife and her unfaithful husband. She sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining room table by candlelight, put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of Chardonnay.

A month later even though they had cut their price in half, they could not find a buyer for their stinky house. Word got out, and eventually, even the local realtors refused to return their calls. Finally, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place.

WHEN SHE HAD FINISHED, SHE WENT INTO EACH AND EVERY ROOM AND DEPOSITED A FEW HALF-EATEN SHRIMP DIPPED IN CAVIAR, INTO THE HOLLOW OF THE CURTAIN RODS. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left.

When the husband returned with his new girlfriend, all was bliss for the first days.

Then slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything, cleaning, mopping, and airing the place out. Vents were checked for dead rodents and carpets where steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere.

Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which they had to move out for a few days, and in the end, they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting.

Nothing worked. People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to work in the house. The

The ex-wife called her ex-husband and asked how things were going. He told her the saga of the rotting house. She listened politely, and said that she missed her old home terribly, and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for getting the house back.

Knowing his ex-wife had no idea how bad the smell was, he agreed on a price that was about 1/10 of what the house had been worth, but only if she were to sign the papers that very day.

She agreed, and within the hour his lawyers delivered the paperwork.

A week later the man and his girlfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home, INCLUDING THE CURTAIN RODS. Amen. Selah. So be it.

Caden’s Cor ner Visiting Fred Roggin and the NBC4 LA Studios

E

ver want to visit a news station? Recently, I got the chance to go to the NBC4 LA studios to interview Fred Roggin, and to watch the taping of the news and his show, “Going Roggin.” With that experience came an amazing tour of the whole studio!

My favorite part of the studio was the control room. There were probably about 50 TV’s inside, and it was all behind the scenes.

You could see the Teleprompter and everything the staff does to get the show going. It was amaz-

ing to see all they did and was a very neat experience.

Later on when it came time to interview Fred we went deeper into the studio. We saw the mini sports studio they had and went into a big, fancy conference room for meetings. After the interview, we went to the actual filming studio and it was something else. The cameras didn’t have cameramen, yet moved on their own. You could also see all the lights and it really gave a very inside view to where they are as they film and how surprisingly small a studio

stage really is.

Overall, seeing the studio and interviewing Fred Roggin was an amazing experience. It was so cool to see everything they do behind the scenes at NBC4. I hope to visit again soon.

West Valley Regional Job Fair to connect job seekers with jobs

early 100 employers will be looking to match up with qualified job seekers when the 2018 West Valley Regional Job Fair comes to the Ontario Convention Center on Sept. 26.

WDB. “The opportunities for businesses and employees in San Bernardino County is unprecedented. We’ve got a workforce that skews younger and is better educated and better trained than ever before.”

The West Valley event is one of three regional job fairs sponsored each year by the San Bernardino County Workforce Development Board to help further advance one of the most robust local economies in the United States.

Last year, more than 230 businesses and more than 2,200 job seekers participated in the three fairs.

he Garcia Center for the Arts gears up for National Hispanic Heritage Month with a one-of-a-kind art exhibit.

National Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15 and ends October 15.

The Hispanic inspired exhibit was put together by Yeni Burgos, a team member at the cultural center.

“With it being National Hispanic Heritage Month the Garcia Center for the Arts is showcasing an exhibit featuring many profound Latino artists. We have some of the major artists including Alfonso Martinez-Mendez, Rose Aliya, Bob Chairez, Luz Perez, and Juan Esquerer,” said Dr. Ernie Garcia, executive director of The Garcia Center for the Arts.

“I think Alfonso Mendez is a real professional, he just finished a lengthy and successful exhibit in

Riverside. He’ll be teaching girl scouts in our community how to paint very soon,” continued Garcia.

The center was dedicated to Garcia and his wife Dotti Garcia on Nov. 16, 2015.

According to www.sbvca.org, the building was dedicated in honor of Ernest and Dorothy Garcia for their many contributions to the visual and performing arts. On November 16th, 2015 it was named the Garcia Center for the

Arts. A home for creatives and art organizations the Garcia Center is a sturdy foundation for San Bernardino's art renaissance.

“It’s a cultural center that has resident tenant’s here. The arts connection is a county wide connection of art groups in the community,” said Garcia.

Garcia, who is also a retired college of education dean at California State University, San Bernardino, said that the center represents music, singing, print-

making, drawing, and art exhibits.

“The main reason we pushed to get this building, that was going to get demolished, was because San Bernardino has such a rich culture in the arts,” Garcia said.

Every so often, a professional painter visits the Garcia Center and teaches a group of participants how to paint a specific picture.

“The community is invited to attend all of our events. Most activities we offer are free. A professional artist comes and demonstrates a particular painting and 26 participants follow instructions of the teacher and produce a painting of their own. Sometimes they don’t follow the teacher and make up their own art; we also serve wine,” said Garcia.

The Garcia Center for the Arts features more than just art.

“We are also going to be offering classes for ceramic, glass blowing, card and printmaking; I hope by the end of the year we’ll be holding glass blowing classes,” concluded Garcia.

The Garcia Center for the Arts is part of the San Bernardino Valley Concert Association, which was established in 1932.

CASA to host Munchin’ at the Mansion fundraiser

.A.S.A. of San Bernardino County will host their 11th annual Munchin’ at the Mansion event at the Edwards Mansion in Redlands on September 26th from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. All proceeds from this event will support the CourtAppointed Special Advocate (C.A.S.A.) program which recruits, screens, trains, and supervises community volunteers to mentor and advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children living in foster care.

Adult volunteer advocates provide a stable and consistent presence in the often turbulent lives of foster youth by assisting them in navigating through life’s challenges, providing encouragement, and advocating for each child’s individual needs.

Dr. Phil, National C.A.S.A. Spokesperson, says “C.A.S.A. volunteers also help to alleviate the constant upheaval faced by foster children. Research shows that children with a C.A.S.A. volunteer are substantially less likely to be in long-term foster care, defined as three years or longer.

When a C.A.S.A. volunteer is involved, a child is less likely to move from home to home, and

they are 95% less likely to re-enter the foster care system.”

Cesar Navarrete, Executive Director for C.A.S.A. of San Bernardino County says, “The community’s support is of vital importance to our program and this event is one where community members can join us to learn how our program supports children in foster care, and how they can positively impact a child by becoming involved, all while enjoying a great evening.”

The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. when guests arrive and are greeted

by C.A.S.A. Board members and staff. The evening will be filled with music, entertainment, food, and various opportunity drawings.

Boys & Gir ls Club holds 2 Day for Kids events

B

oys & Girls Clubs of Greater Redlands-Riverside held two Day for Kids community block parties in the Inland Empire on Saturday, Sept. 15.

The free, public events were held at the Hansberger Clubhouse in Redlands and Mission Pointe housing complex in Riverside.

Kids, teen and their parents and guardians enjoyed food, games, crafts, magic shows, and informational booths.

“We’re glad families from around the Inland Empire could come celebrate our youth,” said Club senior vice president Mark Davis.

Day for Kids is a nationwide Boys & Girls Club event that celebrates youth and the community they live in, and offers families a chance to spend time together.

This is the first year the Club has held a Day for Kids event in Riverside.
