Mock Trial is a competition

hosted by San Bernardino County where students are given a mock police report to argue in front of a San Bernardino superior court judge. The competition takes place in 14 courtrooms in three major courthouses located in San Bernardino, Victorville, and Rancho Cucamonga. San

Bernardino County reports 200 students competing in Mock Trial competitions across the county.

nland Empire disadvantaged infants and children up to age 18 who suffer from facial deformities have an opportunity to receive free reconstructive surgery and other healthcare services through Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a San Diego-based nonprofit company that has expanded its services to the local area.

Surgical procedures are conducted six times a year at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego during “Surgery Weekends” where six to 15 surgeries are performed.

“Fresh Start has provided freeof-cost medical care valued at over $33 million for over 7,000 children since inception,” said Fresh Start CEO Shari Brasher.

“We are looking forward to expanding our outreach and invite local families to enroll in our medical program, regardless of whether they are uninsured or in need of financial support.”

Juan Leonardo Hurtado-Basulto was born with a cleft lip and palate, and Fresh Start performed the first of 8 surgeries when he was 7 years old; his last surgery was a rhinoplasty. Aside from the surgeries, Fresh Start provided dental care, orthodontic care, speech therapy and laser treatments to help diminish his scaring.

To prepare for their cases students are coached by Colton High School teacher and Mock Trial Coach Lucy Leyva, and other Colton High School teachers and volunteers in the program.

The students and coaches set up a schedule then host tryouts for various roles that are involved in the court case such as witnesses and attorneys. After reading the court case thoroughly students will begin to analyze the case then piece it together to build arguments. They are only given four weeks to prepare before presenting their case to the appointed judge.

“It’s kind of what you would see in Law and Order, the TV show, but with a lot more logic and a lot less drama,” said Leyva.

Mock Trial calls upon its students to utilize and hone skills in acting, public speaking, research, and creativity. Although, as Colton High School student Cristal Vazques describes, transitioning from practice to presenting in front of a judge can be daunting, and mistakes can throw off any seasoned competitor.

“At first, it’s an adrenaline rush, but when you're presenting to your peers your mistakes seem soft and not that crucial but in front of a judge they’re harsh and noticeable. You have to make sure you’re quick on your feet to recover from your mistakes,” said

Some of the Mock Trial students plan on pursuing careers in the court system while others plan on pursuing journalism and business.

“Mock Trial is teaching us that our voices matter and they're powerful, giving us the tool to use them in a professional way and create change,” said Aneesa Arana, Colton High School student.

I want to start this column off with a heartfelt Happy Birthday to our beloved columnist Doc who turned 91 this Thursday! We wish you and lovely Stella much health and happiness in the upcoming year!

A couple of things happening this weekend, the first of which is California Native American Day on Friday from 6 - 9 p.m. at Cal State San Bernardino. The annual event provides the opportunity for the community to experience the distinctive cultures of California Indian people firsthand, featuring traditional Native American bird songs, music, art and food.

On Saturday the County Department of Behavioral Health’s annual Recovery Happens will take place at the National Orange Show from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. This is happening in conjunction with National Recovery Month sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in an effort to increase awareness

The Akoma Unity Center in San Bernardino’s westside is hosting its inaugural Jazz in the Park on Sunday from 4 - 8 p.m. at Anne Shirrells Park, 1367 California St. I spoke with Akoma Operations Manager Jennifer Xicara who said that over 800 people have already RSVPd to the event, and featured bands are Johnny Meza & Company out of Pomona, the Inland Empire’s very own Amore the Songstress, and Gee Mack & the Hottest Cats featuring Asia Raye from L.A. The purpose of the event is to bring the community together to enjoy the cultural experience and diversity of music and to promote local businesses that will be featuring their goods during the event.

Onsite food trucks will cater to appetites ranging from soul food to vegan.

It is understandable that many people are concerned about the status of the Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino (BGCSB), since losing its charter under the Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA).

However, my opinion as a former board member feels that this charter that SB held for more than 50 years was lost due to non-compliance issues.

Per BGCA, to suffer the loss of a charter actually takes a long time of non-compliance. This would include, in the case of BGCSB, the lack of submittal of basic requirements such as audited financials, not submitting program reports in a timely manner, and numerous complaints received for other issues way beyond the stated issue of merely the background checks not meeting BGCA requirements.

Once the information regarding the charter was publicly made known, a group of concerned citizens and former BGCSB board members was formed; we contacted the national office to find out what exactly had occurred and if the loss of the charter could be appealed. The group was informed that the revocation was already in effect, after a lengthy attempt to work at the compliance issues.

The Boys & Girls Club of San Bernardino has withstood previous challenges, including insufficient funding and management issues, but never have the issues impacted the charter, and therefore our ability to bounce back. The concerned citizens are currently seeking options to maintain services under the umbrella of the Boys & Girls Club. This may require moving in a different course than what was presented at the recent council meeting.

The ultimate concern of the concerned citizens, former board members, founders and agencies is that there is a facility on the westside of SB where our youth can still go to a safe environment, where they can learn, play, engage and receive other services that will make them good quality adults.

with the intent of SB 910 to ensure that consumers are enrolled in comprehensive coverage and to protect the stability of the marketplace. However, we have requested amendments to address some unintended consequences.

We propose making these plans available to those who are otherwise prohibited from purchasing comprehensive coverage, for example if an enrollee’s coverage is dropped due to failure to pay their premiums, under SB 910 they would be forced to go without any coverage until the next open enrollment aperiod which may be months away. This is because coverage that is lost due to failure to pay is not a qualifying event for special enrollment periods. IEAHU also requested limiting the duration of these plans until the next open enrollment and making them nonrenewable to address fears that they would be used to replace more complete coverage.

We feel our suggested amendments achieve the appropriate balance between the extremes of the Trump and Hernandez plans.

SB 910 removes a critical tool for coverage and leaves affected

individuals with no option other than to utilize costly emergency services should any medical need arise. However, the Trump plan to extend the plans for up to three years could increase premiums for those who remain in comprehensive coverage and have a destabilizing impact on the risk mix of the marketplace as younger healthier individuals may risk less coverage in favor of immediate cost savings.

IEAHU is proud of our role in the significant gains California has made in reducing our state’s number of uninsured over the past several years. We hate to see the state offer zero coverage options to those who need gap coverage until they are able to regain comprehensive coverage.

On the other hand, substituting what was intended to be bridge coverage, for comprehensive coverage may jeopardize the health of our clients and our system. Californian’s need higher middle ground in this rising sea of political discord.

or many years I have been very concerned about the educational programs in California. My home since 1958.

I’ve lived in Orange County, L.A. County and San Bernardino County. They are all the same.

The same qualities; the same problems; the same difficulties to change.

The same evaluation scales place Massachusetts as number 1 and Mississippi as dead last and California as mediocre. In facilities, student scores and quality of teacher skills.

T The condition of the status of our schools should awaken every California resident. My interest in public schools in California escalated significantly because of the number of school teachers in the

And of course, I became aware of their complaints. Also, because I had a high school teaching credential. I also spoke many times at District meetings and many times to teachers in elementary and secondary schools. Usually on the subject of stress and burnout.

I’ve known for many years of the plight in public education. Believe it or not, some of the current issues were prevalent in 1635.

A few years ago, I was giving seminars on stress management.

The Superintendent of the San Bernardino School District asked me to speak to the administrative staff. I agreed. Part of my lecture was on stress management and burnout.

I listed the top ten most stressful vocations. According to Psychology Today, it is Air Traffic Controllers. Second is school teachers; third was secretaries; followed by school administrators; then police followed by firemen, on and on.

Then I listed the coping strategies. Number one for both teachers and administrators was alcohol. On any Friday night, a visit to any bar would reveal the patrons: teachers, administrators and lawyers.

I was challenged. The group denied my comment. Interesting enough, the Superintendent started two Alcoholic Anonymous groups within a month.

There are three habits that T and A used when stressed: booze, marijuana and food. I found that in any school, over 60% of the staff was overweight.

Reluctantly I write the following information about California from the magazine Educational Week. “An annual national report card has rated the Golden State below mediocre, a solid C-minus, 10th from the bottom among the 50 states and Washington, D.C.� California was further earned a 69.9 grade. Massachusetts was ranked at the top; Mississippi was last.�

It seems that California is suffering from a double crisis. It involves quality and equality. One writer puts it this way. “Everyday, hundreds of thousands of children go to school and do not have

enough text books, a qualified teacher, a safe school environment, or access to a curriculum that prepares them for college and for work.�

Funding for schools comes from local taxes and they are subsidized by funds from the State and funds from Congress. It doesn’t take administrators to have a high IQ to solve a few of the more apparent problems.

Most problems are worse for low-income students, students of color, and immigrant students that are trying to learn English.

Management in business operate on a basic law. To solve any problem, start at the top. Problems are not solved by dealing with a janitor. Educational problems will be solved by placing accountability from the top: Superintendents and Principals.

Through the many teachers that I know, I’ve heard scores of them tell me they buy supplies (themselves) for their students. Management is at fault.

I quote again. “Just as students need opportunities to learn, teachers also need opportunities to teach: basic tools such as books, labs, libraries, clean facilities and

healthy working conditions.� It is a start.

Let me regress to 1635 when the first public school was established 383 years ago. On April 23, 1635, the first public school was established in Boston, Massachusetts.

It was named the Boston Latin School. It was for boys only. As a secondary school it was led by the school master, Philemon Pormont, a Puritan settler.

Of all professional occupations, school teachers are paid the least to begin and to receive pay raises.

After two years, teachers are eligible for tenure. The primary benefit of this achievement is that it is very difficult to fire them. Because of misconduct or lack of efficiency or laziness. These are very difficult to prove.

A further thought. “Schools with the highest numbers of Latino/a and African American students and students from families who are poor, have the biggest shortages of textbooks, the lowest numbers of qualified teachers, and attend the state’s most overcrowded and run-down schools.�

Amen. Selah. So be it.

San Bernardino Pastors United, a coalition of 20-plus churches, came together to host its first March for Peace & Peace Festival on Saturday; beginning at Temple Missionary Baptist, participants marched in solidarity against violence to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School where the quarterly block party took place. IECN celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

ispanic Heritage Month is nationally recognized from September 15 to

October 15.

Although it’s celebrated and recognized in many different ways, the month is a tribute to genera-

tions of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our society.

Month is recognized by the community is through the arts and music.

One way Hispanic Heritage

“To me Hispanic heritage means home, togetherness and family. It was my birth right to be born with Hispanic culture…therefore it’s very important to me to carry my family traditions and pass them to my children and then their children and so forth,” said local musician Lauren Soto.

According to www.hispanicheritagemonth.gov, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson, and expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

When it comes to music and Hispanic heritage, Soto, who goes by the stage name, Lo Brooke, says there are many hurdles Latin artists and creatives have to overcome in the industry.

“Although the Latin scene is a large and flourishing one, I think it’s sometimes difficult to break through mainstream pop, R&B, and rap music. We are finally seeing a lot of collaboration within the industries so I think progress is being made,” continued Soto.

She went on to discuss how her culture and heritage has transpired through her music.

“I love rhythm and movement and that’s very much alive in music from my Hispanic heritage.

Most of my songs have a flow and a soul to it as well…which I feel

originates from my Hispanic roots,” Soto explained.

She also shared that she will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by performing at the world famous Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles - a venue where popular artists such as John Maher, Katy Perry and Mike Posner have all been invited to perform at in the past.

“This month I was lucky enough to be invited to perform at the Celebrating Diversity in Music show at The Hotel Cafe by Michael Barnum and Sound Collective. The show we are bringing to The Hotel Cafe is one that will feature a variety of music, ranging from Pop, Latin, and Soul singer-songwriters,” said Soto.

“I am so excited to be part of this as I am very close with the artists on the lineup. The show will be Friday night…September 28 at 7 P.M., so to all my fellow Inland Empire friends, it is totally worth the drive to see these artists perform and celebrate diversity in music with us,” Soto said.

In an official press release for the show, coordinator and performer Michael Barnum said, “I’m excited to be able to share the stage not only with some of my talented friends, but people of color. I think representation is so important. It’s important that our stories get heard and that people hear what we have to share, especially in music.”

“We have such a strong and vast population of Hispanics in our Inland Empire community, so it’s important that we carry our heritage and culture with us throughout the years,” concluded Soto.

Join the community to promote r ecover y and health

T

he Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) and its partners welcome members of the community to celebrate National Recovery Month by attending the 15th Annual Recovery Happens event on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the National Orange Show, 690 S. Arrowhead Ave. (Gate 8) in San Bernardino.

Recovery Happens is a free, family-centered event designed to raise awareness of substance use disorders and celebrate the successes of those in the recovery process.

The event will feature children’s activities, a resource fair, entertainment, music, community performances, outside sports and lunch, all made possible through the support of local community partners, agencies and businesses. A special tribute will take place for individuals in recovery, their families and friends, and those working in the field of prevention, substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services.

Every September the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month a celebration adopted by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors in 2011. SAMHSA is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Services that provides the necessary resources to combat mental illness substance use disorders and promote better health for all Americans. The theme for Recovery Month 2018 is, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Treatment, Home, Community, and Purpose.” This year’s theme explores integrated care and how a strong sense of community, sense of purpose and leadership contribute to effective treatment options that can help support recovery.

“Millions of Americans are living in recovery. Often their successes go unnoticed by our broader communities, as do their stories. Join us as we celebrate stories of recovery that

are happening every day in San Bernardino County,” said DBH Director Veronica Kelley.

DBH’s Substance Use Disorder and Recovery Services (SUDRS) provides a full range of substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery support for communities and residents of San Bernardino County through a network of community based organizations and County-operated clinics. Through SUDRS, DBH is supporting the Countywide Vision of creating a county in which those who reside and invest can prosper and achieve well-being.

he next meeting of the San Gorgonio Chapter, Sierra Club will be Tuesday, October 2, 7:30 p.m. at the San Bernardino County Museum, 2014 Orange Tree Lane, Redlands.

The Sierra Club’s most recent documentary film, Reinventing Power: America’s Renewable Energy Boom, will be shown. The film takes the viewer across the country to hear directly from the people making our clean energy future achievable. These individuals are working to rebuild what’s broken, rethink what’s possible, and revitalize communities.

Critically, Reinventing Power underscores the notion that jobs,

economic growth and innovation don’t have to be sacrificed for a clean environment. Over the film’s 50 minutes, it focuses on people in eight states whose lives were changed by the renewable energy industry while exploring various aspects of clean energy from innovation to installation.

The film, which was produced

by Los Angeles based Transit Pictures and Executive Producer Amber Valletta of A Squared Films, premiered on June 5, 2018, in Los Angeles. The full film will be available to watch in Fall 2018.

athan R. Wall, PhD, associate professor and director of the graduate program in biochemistry at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, proudly returned to his classroom on Aug. 1 following a nine-month tour in Kandahar, Afghanistan with the California Army National Guard’s 40thInfantry Division in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Wall deployed for his first overseas mission with the National Guard on October 7, 2017. He served as the Deputy CJ-4 and Chief Medical Operations Officer responsible for the planning, development and direction of logistical operations. This included both medical and non-medical instruction. Wall was part of a team who worked closely with Afghanistan’s military and police forces as they worked toward a

more self-sufficient nation. “The ultimate goal was to enable the country’s people the ability to vote and vote in relative safety, and as a result see what can happen when your vote counts,� Wall said.

Additionally, Wall assisted in securing clean water sources for use in daily hygiene, medical necessity and hydration for the infantry.

The Army veteran of 10 years was well-prepared for his new mission; however, he said leaving his wife, children, colleagues and students for the year was tough. “Leaving both my family at home and my family at Loma Linda University was one of the hardest things,� said Wall. “It was difficult knowing I couldn’t help them back home if something went wrong.�

Wall’s wife is no stranger to his active duty and reminded his children that “when one of us serves, we all serve.� His oldest son recently returned home from his service in the Army, while his oldest daughter is deploying to Afghanistan next year.

Over the years, Wall has adapted his leadership skills as a soldier into his role as a teacher and vice versa. “The Army has given me the experience to grow as a leader and whether I have failed or succeeded, I continue to push myself further,� Wall said.

He’s currently familiarizing himself with academic life again by focusing on new grant applications, building his laboratory and possibly creating a new academic class for his graduate students.

“Our family at Loma Linda University couldn’t be prouder of Dr. Wall and his service to his country,� said Ronald L. Carter, PhD, provost of Loma Linda University.

“His patriotism is a wonderful gift and our students and faculty are honored to serve alongside him here.�
