fter presenting its blend of fashion, art and Chicano culture in Los Angeles, on the East Coast and in Mexico City, Chicano Elegance is bringing its signature gala to a place organizers say carries particular meaning: San Bernardino. The Chicano Elegance Gala will take over Sole Alley in downtown San

Bernardino on Sept. 26, bringing together a runway fashion show, visual art, live music, Indigenous cultural elements, food and intricately customized lowriders displayed as works of art. For Chicano Elegance Foundation board members Sus and Freddy Calderon, both San Bernardino natives, bringing the event to their hometown is about more than selecting another stop for the traveling cultural showcase.

“Los Angeles has seen it. All these other places have seen it. San Bernardino has not,” Sus said. “So I think it’s time to do that.” Organizers say each Chicano Elegance event is intentionally shaped by the community hosting it rather than replicated city to city. ore than a decade after 14 people were killed in the Dec. 2, 2015, terrorist attack at the Inland Regional Center, three San Bernardino County filmmakers set out to tell a story they believed had too often been framed around the attackers rather than the people whose lives were changed. The result is “We Remember | December 2, 2015,” a county documentary released

in July that took an entire year to create and centers on family members of those killed, survivors, first responders and community leaders. Rather than reconstructing the violence, the film focuses on remembrance, recovery and the ways people have carried the tragedy forward. San Bernardino County multimedia production specialists Shanele Alvarez, Branson Tay and Megan Perez began developing the project as the 10th anniversary approached. Alvarez said the team

was given an opportunity to pursue a passion project outside its normal assignments, and Tay suggested revisiting Dec. 2. “We realized that the incident had only ever been talked about through who did it and why they did it,” Alvarez said. “We wanted to really tell a story from that perspective of paying tribute to who these victims were and survivors, everyone that was involved.” Dec. 2nd Doc, cont. next pg.

Calderon said San Bernardino’s combination of urban and agricultural roots, Route 66 history, lowrider culture and its own artistic traditions distinguish it from nearby Los Angeles. “I don’t think it’s shown. It’s not popular, but it should be,” Calderon said of the city’s creative community. “And that’s the whole point of this, giving them a platform, incorporating as many local artists as possible, local musicians, local dancers.” The gala will unfold in and around Sole Alley, the public art and gathering space on West Fourth Street between D and E streets. The downtown space reopened in 2025 following improvements that brought murals, decorative paving, lighting, landscaping and other features to an area previously used largely as an alleyway. Its selection as the gala site also places the event within a broader effort among local artists, businesses and organizers to bring more activity into downtown San Bernardino. Realicore Real Estate Group owner David Friedman, whose company is supporting the event through donated space, said that community use was part of the original vision behind Sole Alley. “What I like to do in San Bernardino is build something for the community and then give it to them and then let them do with it as they may,” Friedman said. Friedman said he views events that draw people downtown and add cultural activity as an important use of the space. For Calderon, who has been involved in local arts organizing, the larger goal is to build momentum that continues after the gala ends. “Seeing life. Seeing life right there downtown again

Perez said one of the project’s greatest challenges was determining how to honor 14 distinct lives while also fairly representing the relatives who agreed to participate. “How do you represent each of those people and then each of the families who agreed to participate in the project with us?” Perez said. “How do we represent them fairly and how do we tell their story in the way that keeps their memories alive in the community?” That responsibility also shaped how the team conducted interviews. Some participants appeared on camera, while others chose Zoom, telephone interviews or written statements. Alvarez narrated some written accounts for the film. “We wanted to make sure everyone’s story was heard in the way that they wanted to tell it,” Alvarez said. The filmmakers said they ultimately had relatives representing seven of the people killed participate,

at least for a night,” Calderon said. “It’s that momentum of we got to keep it going. We have to keep pouring into it if we want these areas to change.” He pointed to the Downtown San Bernardino Art Walk as an example of how cultural programming can translate into activity for surrounding businesses. Calderon said businesses told organizers that Art Walk nights were among their busiest. “I hope it’s like rolling a ball down a hill,” Calderon said of the gala. “So once everybody sees that, they’re like, ‘OK, what’s next?’” That emphasis on San Bernardino is deliberate. Calderon said organizers often hear events in the region broadly described as taking place in the Inland Empire while San Bernardino itself receives less recognition. “Bring business back to San Bernardino,” Calderon said. “You have to start talking about San Bernardino too.” Sus said the foundation has heard interest from people who want to produce events in the region but do not always know where to begin or whom to contact. He hopes relationships formed through Chicano Elegance can make those connections easier. “Let’s change the narrative,” Sus said. “This is San Bernardino, and this is what we’re doing here.” The gala also aims to expand perceptions of Chicano culture without distancing itself from traditions commonly associated with it.

Fashion will be one of the evening’s central elements, with Chicano designers and models participating in a full runway production. Organizers also plan visual art, Indigenous performances, live entertainment and several highly customized lowriders presented as art exhibits. Rather than staging a traditional large-scale car show, Sus said organizers selected only a handful of vehicles notable for their detailed craftsmanship, including engraving and extensive customization. The event is capped at about 300 guests, a choice organizers say is meant in part to encourage interaction among attendees, artists, entrepreneurs and people working in entertainment and other creative industries. There will be no separate VIP section, Sus said. “Everybody that’s here is VIP,” he said. “If you have any aspirations to become an entrepreneur, some sort of actor or whatever, walk up to them. Let’s make the introduction. You make the connection.” Organizers said attendees and participants are expected from outside the Inland Empire, including Los Angeles, the East Coast, Mexico and parts of the Midwest. For Calderon, bringing those visitors downtown while centering people already creating and organizing in San Bernardino is key. “Everybody that’s doing the work here needs to be included,” he said, “instead of trying to reinvent that wheel.”

Sus said lowriders, tattoos and street culture are authentic parts of Chicano identity, but they represent only part of a much broader culture that includes entrepreneurs, professors, designers, artists, filmmakers and other professionals.

Tickets remain available through Chicano Elegance. General admission is listed at $125, with tables for 10 available for $1,000. The gala will be held Sept. 26 at Sole Alley, 479 W. Fourth St. in downtown San Bernardino.

“We don’t shy away from none of that because that’s part of our culture,” Sus said. “But we just show them, too, much more.”

The team said it deliberately avoided asking victims’ relatives and survivors to relive the attack itself, focusing instead on the people they lost, the recovery that followed and what helped them continue moving forward.

Perez said preserving the meaning behind that memorial became another important purpose of the film, particularly as new employees and residents encounter it without necessarily knowing its history.

The process took an emotional toll on the filmmakers as well. “I don’t think that we were necessarily prepared for the emotional toll that it would take on us,” Alvarez said. “There were some days that were harder than others.” Tay said working as a three-person team gave them a built-in support system after difficult interviews. He also said the project changed his understanding of what healing can look like even a decade later. “I thought that 10 years should be enough time,” Tay said. “But it’s actually not. Like what Megan said, it’s a process, and we really respect that.” Perez described healing as a journey, noting that participants were at different points in that process. She said the filmmakers were struck by the strength of survivors and current county employees who continued serving the community while carrying the effects of the attack. The documentary also traces the creation of the Curtain of Courage memorial outside the San Bernardino County Government Center. Unveiled in 2022, the memorial consists of 14 bronze-colored alcoves shaped

“People today that are hired by the county or that come to Government Center, walk by the memorial,” Perez said. “They don’t know why it’s there or what it represents.” For Alvarez, the documentary’s central message ultimately extends beyond the tragedy itself. “The documentary is a visual representation of hope and resilience,” she said. The filmmakers said feedback from participating families has been positive, with relatives expressing appreciation that their loved ones’ stories were being preserved. Rialto Police Arrest Suspect in Park Shooting

A

43-year-old Rialto man has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting at a city park that left a man hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Rialto police officers responded about 10:54 p.m. Aug. 17 to a park near 150 E. San Bernardino Ave. after receiving reports of a shooting and a victim down. Officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and provided aid before he was taken to a local hospital, according to the Rialto Police Department. Police said the victim’s condition was later stabilized. Investigators said the shooting followed a confrontation in which the suspect approached the victim and questioned him about a possible gang affiliation. According to police, the suspect left the area following the confrontation before returning a short time later with a firearm and shooting the victim. Detectives with the department’s Investigation Bureau took over the case and searched the area for surveillance footage. Police said video obtained during the investigation

helped detectives identify the suspected shooter as John Van Vo, 43, of Rialto. Two days after the shooting, on Aug. 19, officers with the Rialto Police Department’s Street Crime Attack Team conducted surveillance near Vo’s residence. Officers saw Vo leave the home and took him into custody without incident, police said. Detectives later served a search warrant at Vo’s residence and recovered evidence investigators believe is connected to the shooting. Police did not disclose additional details about the evidence. Vo was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office has since filed charges against Vo, according to police. He is being held at the West Valley Detention Center without bail. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Cpl. Glass of the Rialto Police Department at 909-820-2520. T

his might be one of the more entertaining films of summer 2026, and I'm afraid no one will see it in theaters. The film opens at a smalltown drive-in restaurant, the kind that only seems to exist where time hasn't moved, as a group of musicians forms and begins playing. It struck me as reminiscent of the famous 1984 Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, in which each musician comes out one at a time until the most eccentric of them all, the lead singer, arrives to a hero's welcome. This is our title character, Amziah King (Matthew McConaughey), making his entrance into the story. Just as the band orders food and begins to play, they're interrupted by the local sheriff, Sunderland (Bruce Davis), who calls on Amziah — whose day job is honey farming — to help determine the rightful owner of some stolen honey. Yes, the plot of this film centers on stolen honey. Is this going to be a remake of the Charles Bronson film Mr. Majestyk (1974), in which a peaceful watermelon farmer is hassled to the point of revenge? After a hair-raising evening, Amziah ends up in a diner, where he finds his old foster daughter, Kateri, played by Angelina Looking Glass. They strike up a quick conversation, and before long, she rejoins her old family to help with the honey farm. This is where the film really takes on the qualities of what Quentin Tarantino calls the "hangout film." This style of storytelling harkens back to older westerns such as Rio Bravo (1959). It's through this kind of construction that we come to know these characters simply by spending time with them. There's not much of a plot, per se — it's more about seeing them as they are, letting their actions reveal who they are, and, if you pay

attention, catching some nuggets of foreshadowing. The music throughout this sequence is very much in the western tradition, again recalling Rio Bravo and its scenes of Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson singing together. It's also a nice callback to John Ford westerns like The Searchers and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, where, in the middle of the action, there's suddenly time for a song or a dance. There's also a wonderful sequence in which Amziah teaches Kateri about potlucks. Her growing appreciation for them — and for a small town's love of local music — will come in handy as the story moves forward. As I said, this is a classic revenge story, and the film's antagonist, Dob McCoy, played by Kurt Russell, enters the picture. The bees from Amziah's farm are stolen, and through various twists and turns, it falls to Kateri to get them back. We learn that she is Native and that her mother had a troubled history, which has left Kateri with a deep-seated distrust of others. She deals with those who cross the people she cares about in clever and audacious ways. This leads to a wonderful sequence in which Kateri and another standout, Jake Horowitz as Remmick, take the beehives back down the river. This film certainly draws on the roots of classic westerns but transplants them into a modern setting — or, depending on your point of view, a place time forgot. The story could just as easily have been set in the 1970s or '80s, but it happens to unfold now. There's a timelessness to it. Another John Wayne western it brings to mind is The Cowboys (1972), directed by Mark Rydell, who passed away this week. Like that film, this one places its older lead, Amziah, among people younger than himself in support of a mission, pitting them against

those who are older and more experienced. In The Cowboys, the kids have to drive the cattle to market; in this film, it's up to the kids to bring the bees home. Standout performances come from Jake Horowitz as Remmick and Angelina Looking Glass as Kateri. Beyond being a western, the film carries shades of noir — you don't mind that our heroine takes some shortcuts because she has to; it's how she gets ahead. With that noir touch comes a critique of the ultra-wealthy and powerful: In this small town, they aren't protected, and our sheriff, Sunderland (Davis), largely turns a blind eye to how Kateri wins the day. Some of the songs performed by Amziah's band are about Christ, letting us know that, in their version of Christianity, Christ doesn't walk with the ultrawealthy but with those on the fringes and the margins. Everyone does the best they can to help each other out. See this one in theaters for sure — at Harkins Redlands and 2nd Street Cinema in Beaumont, as well as other venues throughout the Inland Empire. The most important fixes were fairly minor. I changed “where each musician” to “in which each musician,” added a few needed commas, fixed the awkward “takes on what Quentin Tarantino calls” construction, separated the very long potluck sentence, changed “another Wayne western” to “another John Wayne western” for clarity, and tightened the noir paragraph. One phrase I would especially keep from my edit is “comes a critique of the ultra-wealthy and powerful” rather than “comes a target on the ultra-wealthy and powerful.” The original wording doesn't quite work idiomatically, while “critique” expresses the reviewer’s argument much more precisely.

Riverside Art Museum Names Vivian Zavataro as Executive Director Community News

he Riverside Art Museum (RAM) has appointed Vivian Zavataro as its next executive director, bringing an internationally experienced museum leader, curator and advocate for community-centered engagement to one of the Inland Empire’s leading cultural institutions. Zavataro will begin her new role Oct. 1, 2026. She joins RAM from the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University, where she serves as executive and creative director, overseeing the museum’s strategic, operational and creative direction. Her appointment comes at a significant period of growth for the Riverside Art Museum, which has expanded its reach and national profile through

exhibitions, educational programming and its role as the home of The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture.

Feeding America Riverside Pantry Offers Families a Dignified Grocery-Store Shopping Experience By Manny Sandoval

t Feeding America San | Riverside Bernardino’s Fresh Start Pantry, food assistance looks less like receiving a prepackaged box and more like making a trip through a neighborhood grocery store. Clients push carts through aisles of produce, dairy, grains, proteins and shelf-stable foods, selecting what works for their households instead of taking home a predetermined assortment. The Fresh Start Pantry by Goodman opened in January 2025 inside FARSB’s Hunger Resource Center at 4035 Trail Creek Road in Riverside as the organization’s first on-site client-choice pantry. “It is a client choice. We try to have more of that dignified space for them,” said Vanesa Rangel Mercado, FARSB’s partner relations director and interim CEO. “They come in like a grocery store, they get their carts, they go through.” The referral-based pantry was developed with health care partners that screen patients for food insecurity and connect participants with FARSB. Once enrolled, clients are scheduled for recurring monthly visits, where they can select food based on dietary restrictions, cultural preferences and personal tastes. PHOTO MANNY SANDOVAL

Shopping is organized around an 18-point system. Foods carry varying point values, while produce is measured differently: 10 pounds equals one point, Rangel Mercado said. Depending on availability, the pantry may stock fruits and vegetables, eggs, dairy products, grains, beans, lentils, peanut butter, ground turkey, fish and other proteins. For Rachel Bonilla, FARSB’s marketing and engagement manager, the amount of food clients can choose within that system is part of what makes the experience stand out. “Depending on the needs of the

family, they can adjust, but they leave with full carts every time,” Bonilla said. The model also addresses a practical problem familiar to traditional food distributions: waste. Rangel Mercado said households receiving preselected boxes may encounter food they cannot eat or do not know how to use. “Some items unfortunately end up in the trash,” she said. With client choice, families can be more intentional about what they take home, reducing the likelihood that donated food goes unused. FARSB reported that Fresh Start served just over 1,000 households, totaling 3,004 people, during its first year. During IECN’s recent tour, Rangel Mercado said the pantry has since served more than 4,000 people. But food inside the cart is only one part of the effort. Fresh Start participants can also receive help connecting to CalFresh, California’s version of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. FARSB offers bilingual application assistance in English and Spanish, allowing people to request help from a staff member who can walk them through the application, answer questions and help complete and submit it. The county ultimately processes applications and determines eligibility and benefit levels. FARSB reported helping individuals submit 1,372 CalFresh applications to county agencies in 2025. FARSB says the support is intended to help stabilize households beyond their pantry visits. At the Hunger Resource Center, staff can also connect clients with other food distributions and additional resources. “We always try to share with clients [that] food pantries should not be the primary source of food. This is for replenishment,” Rangel Mercado said. “We at least want to start with providing them with those nutritious items first.”

Nutrition education extends beyond what is stocked on the shelves. FARSB also hosts cooking demonstrations centered on foods clients can find in the pantry. Stephanie Lezama, FARSB programs director, said a recent demonstration included tuna salad made with pantry vegetables and Greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise, along with a threebean salad and homemade dressing. The goal, she said, is to show clients how to build nutritious meals they can afford to recreate. “We try to really incorporate all the food groups when we’re doing the cooking demos,” Lezama said. “How can they recreate this again at home? Or if they need to go to the Dollar Tree or anything like that to get items that are cost effective.” The pantry was launched with support from Goodman, which secured lifetime naming rights and helped fund shelving and storage for the space. Rangel Mercado said the company has continued supporting the program and that grant funding remains important to keeping programs such as Fresh Start operating. For FARSB, the Riverside pantry is also intended as a working example for its network of nearly 250 nonprofit partners across Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Clientchoice models can require more space, volunteers and operating time than box distributions, Rangel Mercado said, but the organization wants partners to see that the approach can be attainable. “I think this opens up the eyes of not only the community, the funders, but whoever comes and visits what a client-choice model really signifies,” she said. At Fresh Start, that meaning begins with a simple shift: giving people facing food insecurity the ability to decide what their families will eat.

According to the CDE website, the California Distinguished Schools Award aims to recognize exemplary instructional programs throughout California public schools and remains one of the state’s most important ways to celebrate exceptional schools for their innovation and success in supporting students.

“I am both excited and honored that Cajon High, my alma mater, is now a California Distinguished School,” said Cajon Principal Dr. Christopher Jackson. “Every student wants to be able to brag about their alma mater, and now I have one more reason to brag, one more reason to be proud to be a Cajon Cowboy. And it will be another reason for the Class of 2026 to celebrate.”

Richardson PREP HI has earned a California Distinguished School Award nine times, starting in 1990 and including this most recent 2026 recognition. Richardson also earned a California Gold Ribbon Schools Award in 2017 when that award briefly replaced the California Distinguished School Award. ontana Courtplace, a new, twophased 100% affordable housing community, is underway in the City of Fontana with a $4 million federal investment secured by Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) to transform a vacant lot into a developable property. The first phase of Fontana Courtplace, will consist of 50 affordable apartments across two residential buildings and include community gathering spaces, a children’s playground, multipurpose room, learning center, secure bike room, laundry facilities, residential parking spaces, and resident health and wellness services and programs. Each building will be all-electric with solar panel installation on the building roofs. Construction is expected to be completed in mid to late 2027.

This development further reflects Fontana’s commitment to making housing accessible across all income levels. Congresswoman Norma Torres’ $4 million support was critical to help build the community and offer housing stability for generations in Fontana. Phase II will expand development of an additional 56 units, for a complete affordable housing community totaling 106 units. Related California, in partnership with LaBarge Industries and Foundation for Affordable Housing, is leading the development of Fontana Courtplace. Related California is partnering with the City of Fontana for its ninth affordable housing development, ensuring safe, quality housing with residential services for those who will call Fontana Courtplace home. “The support from Congresswoman Norma Torres helps turn building plans
