olton High School junior Thomas Lemus has loved art and drawing since he was a young child.

Now Thomas’s incredible talents have earned him a spot at the 2019 California Mock Trial competition, which will take place March 22-24 in Sacramento. While the San Bernardino County Mock Trial champion team from Cajon High School and other top teams in the state battle it out in the courtroom, Thomas and other artists will be quietly sketching the scenes unfolding before them. “I think it’s cool,” Thomas said. “It’s a little surreal, but I think it’s cool to rep Colton.”

Thomas is the only courtroom artist from San Bernardino County headed to the state contest and is the first Colton High School artist to make it this far in the competition. A total of 17

artists competed for the chance to represent San Bernardino County at the state contest. Thomas’s foray into courtroom art happened by accident. He said he joined the Mock Trial team this year to be with friends. Colton High School teacher Lucy Leyva, the team’s advisor, said she also encouraged Thomas to join. “I saw his art and was like, can you be our artist?” Thomas said he has loved art as far back as he could remember and is a self-taught artist. He recalls watching Sponge Bob Square Pants cartoons and stopping them every few seconds so he could learn to draw the character by examining each frame. Mrs. Leyva believes that it is Thomas’s attention to detail that helps set him apart from competitors. Noticing the subtle nuances of what he sees is critiLemus, cont. on next pg.

hile Colton High School unveiled its new Memorial Stadium, a charismatic and energetic mascot stole the show. Yogi, Colton High School’s mascot, has received a full makeover donated by the residents of Colton and Colton High School alumnus. With a look that pays homage to the original Yogi, Colton residents were buzzing with excitement. Two years ago, Leno and Liz Moreno, owners of Leno’s Rico Taco, went to support Colton Youth football team at an away game in Indio. While cheering on their hometown, the Moreno’s noticed the poor state Yogi the mascot was in, especially in comparison to other mascots in attendance. They decided something needed to be done and set to work. They went to Colton High School Principal Joda Murphy and presented a plan to donate to Colton High School a revamped mascot. Principal Murphy was overjoyed with the idea and

offered to help fund it but the Moreno’s insisted on having it privately funded. “We wanted it to be privately funded because the school funding should be used for the sports programs which have a long wish list,” said Leno Moreno. At first, they attempted a GoFundMe Page, but it didn’t yield results after six months. That’s when the Moreno’s took to a more direct approach by calling Colton Alumni, local business owners, and residents personally; in one day they reached their $5,000-dollar goal. “I’m an alumnus of Colton High school, and anything to help its people is a worthy cause,” said Gary Grossich, owner of Nickelodeon Pizza. Manny Ayala, Owner of Trade Print, created a custom design for Yogi allowing it to really come to life for Colton residents. The design was sent to a company in Canada where it would be tailored to Ayala’s specifications, then shipped. It was set to arrive Yogi, cont. on next page
