n Tuesday January 8, the Colton Woman’s Club at 495 North 7th Street in Colton held their month-

ly Membership Luncheon Meeting.

About 75 people attended the meeting in which the Woman’s Club regular business was handled prior to the presenting of the annual HOBY scholarship award to two local area stu-

dents.

HOBY is a youth leadership seminar that was first founded in 1958 by the late Hollywood actor Hugh O’Brien. The HOBY organization grants the prestigious

Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award to those who have demonstrated prominence in leading, educating and motivating youth.

almart announced Monday it is opening a 340,000-square-foot

high-tech consolidation center at 1600 Aqua Mansa Road in Colton, that will be the first in Walmart’s supply chain to receive, sort, and ship freight.

This Walmart-owned center will open in July with 150 full-time associates. It will grow to employ more than 600 associates by 2021. With the combined might of people and world-class logistic

technology, this facility will be the most efficient consolidation center in Walmart’s supply chain.

Mayor Navarro expresses gratitude to supporters

Community invited to celebrate new CHS Memorial Stadium

T

he community is invited to celebrate the newly-completed Colton High School Memorial Stadium project and enjoy an afternoon of soccer, special student performances and official ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, January 17.

Festivities begin at 3:15 p.m. when the Girls Varsity Soccer Team plays Bloomington High School.

The celebratory show by CHS students and Board of Education ribbon cutting take place at 4:45 PM. The Boys’ Varsity Soccer game against Bloomington starts at 5:45 PM. Pregame food sales start at 2:30 p.m. Come early for a snack and support CHS student groups.

The project is funded by a combination of developer fees and Measure G Bond proceeds.

HOBY presidents who have received the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award include: Dolores and Bob Hope, General Colin L. Powell (Ret.), President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan, Raisa and Mikhail Gorbachev, Secretary of State and Former First Lady Hillary Clinton, and President and Mrs. George H. W. Bush.

Mayor Frank Navarro hosted a “Thank You Celebration” on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Juan Carlos Grill to express his gratitude and appreciation to all those who supported his run for mayor, played an active role in his campaign and opened up their homes for Meet and Greet events. “If it weren’t for all their support, this would never have happened,” Navarro said by phone.

The HOBY award granted by the Woman’s Club in Colton is granted to a sophomore from Colton High School and another from Bloomington High School. It provides the cost of the HOBY State Leadership Conference in Westlake, which is one of 70 national HOBY Conferences held for approximately 10,000 sophomores across the United States. The students attend the three- or four-day conference to sharpen their leadership skills in order to become more effective leaders in their communities.

The process for winning this scholarship is for the students to first write an essay about why they want to attend the HOBY conference, and then to complete an interview with Colton Woman’s Club members Joan Prost and Lori Edwards. After that, the winners are announced.

This year, the HOBY scholarships were presented to Colton High School sophomore Gift Osueke and Bloomington High School sophomore Jacqueline Baltierra. Those in attendance included Gift’s father Desmond Osueke, Jacqueline’s aunt Consuela Baltierra, Bloomington High School counselor Heather Butterworth and Colton Joint Unified School District Superintendent Jerry Almendarez.

Dena Leavitt, President of the Colton Woman’s Club said of the presentation, “I am so proud to be a part of an organization that does such great things for the students in our school district. We’ve been participating in the HOBY program through scholarships for about 15 years now; my mother and two aunts were Colton Woman’s Club members, and it’s wonderful to continue the legacy through the generations to see the students have a chance to enhance their leadership skills.”

Walmart The consolidation center will serve as a facility upstream of the retailer’s Distribution Centers and Fulfillment Centers that allows Walmart to receive freight from suppliers, process and sort through the facility and ship to many different locations in the most efficient manner.

The San Bernardino County Homeless Count and Survey

T

he annual San Bernardino County unsheltered homeless Point-In-Time Count (PITC) count, coordinated by the San Bernardino Office of Homeless Services (OHS) in conjunction with the San Bernardino County Homeless Partnership (SBCHP), will take place on January 24, 2019. It is designed to obtain an estimated number of homeless individuals and families in San Bernardino County on a given day and to discover their specific needs.

Individuals and organizations are invited to volunteer to partici-

pate in the count, which will be conducted from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. throughout San Bernardino County.

All 24 cities and towns as well as the unincorporated areas within San Bernardino County will be canvassed by field teams of volunteers, including members of the public, community groups, county employees, homeless service providers, and private-sector stakeholders. Volunteers who are able to engage with homeless individuals will ask specific questions, offer hygiene kits, and provide information on who to contact for homeless services.

What's new this year? Volunteers will conduct the entire unsheltered Point-In-Time Count (PITC) by use of a web-based application designed specifically for the San Bernardino PITC. Volunteers will need to have their own IOS (Apple) or Android "smart" phone in order to conduct the survey.

Commission meets on the second Monday of odd-numbered months at 5:45 p.m.

The Airport Advisory Board acts in an advisory capacity to the City Council in all matters pertaining to the administration, operation, development, improvement and maintenance of the Redlands Municipal Airport. The Airport Advisory Board meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.

K eep your Medicare costs down Most doctors accept Medicare as full payment for their services.

But some accept it only for certain services, and others don’t accept it at all.

What does this mean for you?

If you have Original Medicare, it means you should try to use doctors, hospitals, medical equipment suppliers, and other healthcare providers that participate or “accept assignment� in Medicare.

Such providers have signed agreements to take Medicare as payment in full for their services.

If your doctor or other provider accepts assignment: Your out-of-pocket costs may be less.

The provider agrees to charge you only the Medicare deductible and coinsurance amount, and usually waits for Medicare to pay its share before asking you to pay your share.

The provider has to submit your claim directly to Medicare and can't charge you for submitting the claim.

Some doctors and other providers haven't signed an agreement to accept assignment for all Medicare-covered services, but they can still choose to accept assignment for some services. These providers are called "non-participating" providers.

If your doctor or other provider doesn't accept assignment: You may have to pay the entire bill at the time of service. Your provider is supposed to submit a claim to Medicare for any Medicare-covered services they provide to you.

The provider can't charge you for submitting a claim. If they

don't submit the Medicare claim once you ask them to, call 1-800MEDICARE. In some cases, you might have to submit your own claim to Medicare using Form CMS1490S to get paid back.

The provider can charge you more than the Medicare-approved amount, but there's a limit. Nonparticipating providers are paid 95% of the Medicare-approved amount. They can only charge you up to 15% over the amount that non-participating providers are paid.

The 15 percent limit applies only to certain Medicare-covered services and doesn't apply to some medical supplies and durable medical equipment.

Some doctors and other providers don’t want to enroll in the Medicare program at all. You can still visit these “opt out� providers, but they must enter into a private contract with you (unless you’re in need of emergency or urgently needed care).

A private contract is a written agreement between you and a doctor or other provider who has decided not to provide services to anyone through Medicare. The private contract only applies to services you get from the provider who asked you to sign it.

If you sign a private contract with an opt-out doctor or other provider, keep in mind that Medicare won't pay any amount for the services you get from that provider, even Medicare-covered services.

You'll have to pay the full amount this provider charges you.

You and your provider will set up your own payment terms through

the contract.

If you have a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy, it won't pay anything for the services you get. Call your insurance company before you get the service if you have questions.

Your provider must tell you if Medicare would pay for the service if you got it from another provider who accepts Medicare.

Your provider must tell you if he or she has been excluded from Medicare.

You can't be asked to sign a private contract for emergency or urgent care.

You're always free to get services not covered by Medicare if you choose to pay for them yourself.

You don't have to sign a private contract. You can always go to another provider who participates (accepts assignment) in Medicare.

Be sure to ask your physician or other provider if they are participating, non-participating, or optout. You can also check by calling 1-800-MEDICARE or by using Medicare’s Physician Compare tool on www.medicare.gov.

You may want to contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) to get free help before signing a private contract with any doctor or other health care provider.

The most beloved and remembered verse of Scripture is undoubtedly the Gospel of John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” The love of God. We quote it; we sing about it; and we believe it.

But recently I was reading Mathew Kelly’s book, “Rediscover Jesus,” and he said something that impressed me and disturbed me. It was given to me

We have a tendency to judge

Consider the people that Jesus associated with. E. Stanley Jones, who many years ago was a Methodist missionary in India. He wrote, “Jesus was the best photograph that God had taken.” What it implied was that Jesus was reflecting the love of God, in His actions.

The question we must ask ourselves is, “How many of those that Jesus associated with would we be comfortable with? They were: the sick, the poor beggars (vagrants), the orphans, despised, women, children, the boozers, and sinnersin each of them Jesus saw them as a child of God. An example may be of help. In John 4:7-8. It’s about a Samarian woman that came to a well for water. Jesus asked her for a drink.

His disciples had gone to the city

to buy food.

She said to Jesus, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask me, a woman and a Samaritan, for a drink?” Remember; all Jews, Gentiles and Romans-despised the Samaritans.

She was also divorced. Her own people looked down on her.

At another time He drinks with men at the local bar. He was accused of being a “winebibber.”

(Matthew 11:19) In Luke 10:25-37, IS THE FAMOUS STORY THAT JESUS SHARED. The concept of helping others, even though they were outcasts. Jesus’ attitude toward others was radical. He saw everyone, the good and the bad, the acceptable and the boozers, the religious and the irreligious. All were children of God. A personal account. Years ago, when I was a local pastor, we had a spaghetti dinner. I received several complaints that night of the dinner. Three men were serving the spaghetti in the kitchen. They were dishing it to the people.

One man was a para-trooper, a

Colonel and was wearing his uniform with all of his medals. The second was a senior, former military man who was a pain-in-theneck for many, the third man was relatively new to the church. He had recently got out of prison, he was a Hell’s Angel and covered with tattoos. He was clean and that evening had asked me if he could join the church.

By the way, several members complained about him. I told him, “Yes, just attend the membership class on Sunday.”

One year later I conducted his funeral. The only ones there were his wife, under the tent, and about 30 Hell’s Angels standing far back. The service was at Montecito.

I ask you, “What would Jesus have done?” Or what would you have done?

Also, I have thought about the disciples of Jesus. The ones He had picked to listen to what He had to say, and the ones that would build His church after He was gone: one was boisterous and a liar, two were egotistical, they

wanted very special preference, one was a traitor. The disciples were described in Acts 4:13 as “unlearned and ignorant.” WHAT A BUNCH. Two personal illustrations. My Mother gave me up when I was 2 ½ years old. Fortunately, my Dad took me. We would talk after I grew older. At age 16 I had become a Christian and a self-righteous believer; a trait my church encouraged. A young girl; age 18, became pregnant, and in my righteousness, I condemned her. My Mother said something that I’ve never forgotten. “Bill, have you ever considered that she might need what you say you have?” It changed my attitudes completely.

“Thank you, Mother.”

My favorite response for any judgmental attitude is, “Since when did God resign and put me or you in charge?”

Some place in the Bible it says, “Judge not that you be not judged.”

Amen. Selah. So be it.

T

his holiday season I went on the Warner Brothers Studio Tour. I really enjoyed the tour and thought I’d share my experiences here.

On the tour you can see your favorite places on TV up close, take pictures and overall get closer to your favorite movies and shows.

The tour is not scripted so your tour guide will center it around what shows you and your tour mates enjoy, making it an experience custom for you.

On this tour I personally was able to take a picture in front of the Full(er) House iconic red door

and see props from films like Harry Potter. I really enjoyed this unique up-close look given I love those shows and movies so much.

My tour also was lucky enough to go into Ellen’s Studio and see the hundreds of cameras, merchandise shop, and special VIP seats for people like Drew Brees and Ellen’s mom! I was also able to see the sets of Annie, Newsies, Casablanca, Shameless, Friends and a garage housing vehicles from the Batman films!!

However, during a few weeks in December and January, the tour had an added plus as at the endGilmore Girls specially recreated

sets. My mom and I both love the show, and we were able to take a picture in front of Lorelei’s house and the famous gazebo from the show, making it an even better experience!

Overall the Warner Brothers Studio Tour made for a fun day and I hope to tour the studio once again in the future. I highly recommend anyone who’s a fan of a certain TV show or movie that they go on this tour so you can get closer to the entertainment you love.

I give the Warner Bros Studio Tour 5 out of 5 stars!

Community blood supply at critically low levels

T

he community blood supply has reached dangerously low levels that could potentially affect patient well-being.

LifeStream blood bank is urging community residents come forward to avoid local hospitals taking the step of postponing surgeries and other procedures requiring blood transfusions.

All donation types and all blood types are urgently needed at this time. Blood must be on the shelves for surgeries, cancer treatments, to treat accident, burn and trauma victims, and for newborn babies and women giving birth.

Donors must be at least 15 years of age (15- and 16-year-olds require a signed parental consent form; the form is available at all LifeStream locations); weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health.

The blood donation process is faster and more convenient than ever when donors – the day of donation – go to LStream.org and click on “ExpressPass.” Required paperwork may be reviewed and the donor questionnaire completed before the donor arrives at the collection site.

SBCCD to host job fair aimed at giving reentry population a second chance

ooking for a job? Looking for a second chance at a better life after being incarcerated? The San Bernardino Community College District, in partnership with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and 2-1-1 San Bernardino County, is hosting a free job and community resource fair for the reentry population and general public on Friday, January 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at San Bernardino Community College District Applied Technology Training Center Building, 114 S. Del Rosa Dr., San Bernardino, 92408.

More than 20 organizations and employers will provide information on full-time and part-time career opportunities in environmental conservation, customer service, hospitality, logistics, machining, manufacturing, military, and retail. Attendees will also learn about community resources to find housing, health care, food, and legal assistance.

Hagman unanimously selected as Chair man of the Board of Super visors

he Board of Supervisors, on Tuesday, Jan. 8, confirmed Supervisor Curt Hagman as Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for the next two years.

Union Pacific Railroad Company to pay $2.3 million in multi-jurisdiction

an Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson announced that as part of a multi-jurisdiction prosecution, Placer County Superior Court Judge Alan Pineschi has ordered Union Pacific Railroad Company to pay over $2.3 million in the settlement of a civil environmental case. In addition to monetary penalties, Union Pacific will also implement a new environmental compliance assurance program at their respective yards in San Bernardino, Placer, Nevada, and San Joaquin Counties. This new program will designate a compliance officer to monitor and report on Union Pacific Railroad Company's training and compliance at these facilities. This resolution was a direct result of the work of local regulatory agencies as well as the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

According to the District Attorneys' complaint, Union Pacific Railroad Company mishandled hazardous wastes, mishandled materials stored in aboveground storage tanks, maintained inaccurate hazardous material business plans, and was responsible for spills of

hazardous substances - including petroleum, over an eight-year period. This settlement resolves the allegations made in the District Attorneys' complaint.

"This settlement with Union Pacific Railroad Company corrects prior deficiencies and also helps prevent similar issues in the future. I wish to emphasize that Union Pacific Railroad was cooperative and professional throughout our investigation and prosecution as we worked with them to achieve a fair resolution regarding these matters." said District Attorney Anderson. "This settlement also requires Union Pacific to improve their staff training as well as management of their respective facilities."

Under the settlement, Union Pacific Railroad Company must pay $2,000,000.00 in civil penalties and $313,432.00 to reimburse the costs of the investigation. Union Pacific must also hire and pay for the environmental compliance officer to strengthen the companies' environmental protection programs.
