en Hubb's Little League’s 4th annual Baseball Clinic was originally intended to be hosted at Veterans Park in Colton, but the heavy rains caused a location change to occur the day before, where Prime Baseball offered their training location in Redlands for the day on January 4. Although the abrupt location change and the continuation of the rains, there was only

a minimal impact on the amount of attendees at the Clinic. President of Ken Hubbs Memorial Little League, Alex Gago said We're taking registration as they come in. Sometimes parents may say, You know what, let's just stay home today because of the rain and things like that. But I think the amount of coaching staff that we have here and the alumni I don't think it's going to affect us. Due to the space of the new location of the clinic, the kids had to be separated by age groups, ages 5-8 was from 9am-10am, ages

One of the parents from the 9-11 age group, Jenny Barreto said, “It's nice you know just so he gets more exposure and more motivation and see how fun it can be, versus just, you know, practice and games and this is outside of our community, so I like to go around to other communities and meet more people. San Bernardino County Seeks Volunteers in Colton for Jan. 22 Point-In-Time Homeless Count By Manny Sandoval

S

an Bernardino County is recruiting volunteers in Colton to participate in the 2026 Point-in-Time Count of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness, set for Thursday, Jan. 22, 2026, as part of a countywide effort conducted during the final days of January.

Pg. 3

The point-in-time count is a one-day, locally coordinated survey required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for communities that receive Continuum of Care funding. In San Bernardino County, the count is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Homeless Partnership in collaboration with the Office of Homeless Services and in consultation with the Institute for Urban Initiatives.

County officials said the updated methodology requires participation from key com-

munity members and volunteers in each city and unincorporated area to organize and carry out the count. Volunteers may include representatives of local government, social service providers, law enforcement, municipal agencies, educational institutions, faith-based organizations, local businesses, civic groups, neighborhood associations, nonprofit agencies, and current and formerly homeless individuals. The count includes two components — an unsheltered count and a sheltered count — and follows HUD’s definition of homelessness, which includes people living in places not meant for human habitation, in emergency shelters, in transitional housing for people who came from the streets or shelter, and in HUDdefined safe havens. In addition, volunteers administer a brief subpopulation survey drawn from the county’s PITC, cont. next pg.

Ken Hubbs (cont.) - Barreto’s son Ethan shared the same sentiment, saying, “Yeah I like it, it’s fun and baseball is really cool too.” Gago said, “It’s really all about who you know, they're great friends of Stan Sanchez, who's a legendary coach he's literally a legend. So right now, Stan is really a major player in putting this together. I help him as well. But as far as facilitating all these major names, that's Stan Sanchez.” Some of the major names Gago referred to were Former Catcher for the Phillies Jeff Groteworld and Third Baseman Coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers Dino Ebel. Ebel said, “I played baseball in this area, San Marino Valley College, so anytime that I could just share my experience, to tell stories on work habits and doing good in school and being a being a good person is always what I look forward to telling young kids at clinics like this, especially for Ken Hubbs who to me is a hero star of the area, and I am just fortunate they invited me to come back and be a part of it.”

PITC (cont.)

Some major contributors to putting together the baseball clinic was the Ken Hubbs Little League, Colton’s Lions Club, local Inland Empire baseball student volunteers, and former Inland Empire College Baseball Coach Stan Sanchez. Sanchez said, “So I'm from this area, Ken Hubbs was a former athlete, great athlete by the way, out of Colton. And I knew him when I was a young kid, and he was very influential. This is the fourth annual Ken Hubbs Youth Clinic. It's for kids, and I invited a bunch of my former players that played for me that are now coaches in the Inland Empire, and they came to help us, and they brought their players with okay to help us instruct.” Ken Hubbs Little League also received a donation of $1,500 from Joe Baca Jr. who also has a connection of playing baseball and contributing towards the Little League in previous years. With the weather in the clear, Spring signups for the Ken Hubbs Little League have resumed on the field and parents are still able to register their kids likely until February.

Riverside Protest Condemns Trump’s Venezuela Raid as ‘Illegal,’ Warns of Another Endless War By Christopher Salazar

R

esidents and activists from across the Inland Empire flocked to downtown Riverside Saturday evening, Jan. 3, to protest what organizers described as an illegal U.S. attack on Venezuela, condemning the Trump administration’s foreign policy and broader U.S. intervention in Latin America. The demonstration comes amid renewed national debate over U.S. foreign and executive overreach, international law, regional precedent and the human costs of unprovoked military action abroad. The move has drawn criticism from lawyers, scholars and foreign governments, many of whom argue it violates international law governing the use of force against sovereign states. That this coincides with rising political and economic turmoil at home is a growing concern for local activists. Jag Arreola, a Riverside based hip-hop artist who attended the rally, said the protest was an act of solidarity with Venezuela and a rejection of U.S. imperialism. “We are demanding an end to the criminal attack that happened on Venezuela,” Arreola said. “We say no war with Venezuela: not one more life lost for the greed and interests of the ruling class of the United States.” Arreola framed the moment as a part of a long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America, saying the recent events fit a familiar pattern of undermining national sovereignty. Other protestors emphasized the domestic and international consequences of Trump’s attack on Venezuela. Odeh Gammoh of Inland Empire Democratic Socialists of America (IEDSA), spoke to the crowd as the rain waxed and waned. He later told IECN he was angered over how federal resources are used. “The administration is taking my tax dollars and my colleagues’ tax dollars and deciding to use that for another endless war overseas,” Gammoh said, adding that many Americans struggle with rising

grocery prices, healthcare costs and poor infrastructure, emphasizing Trump’s imprudence. Gammoh described the U.S. intervention as illegal under both domestic and international law and argued that decisions of this magnitude should not be made unilaterally by a president. “No single person in this country should be able to launch decisions like this on their own,” he said. “There should be a democratic process.” For Arreola and Gammoh, their emphasis resides in democratic rhetoric used to justify military action. Arreola said claims that the United States acts to defend democracy often obscure political, regional, economic and strategic interests. “They’re using the old boogeyman trick,” he said, arguing that foreign governments are routinely portrayed as threats to justify intervention. Gammoh echoed that view, drawing comparisons between Venezuela and past U.S. interventions in the Middle East and Latin America. He argued that the difference under the Trump administration is not policy, but presentation. “Trump doesn’t give you the whipped cream and the cherry on top,” Gammoh said. “He just says it: ‘we want the oil.’” Gammoh emphasized the impact of U.S. foreign policy on the country’s reputation abroad. He said that while skepticism toward U.S. intentions is longstanding, recent actions have made American power appear more unstable and exposed, likening it to a fractured empire. Even so, Gammoh cautioned against apathy, adding that future IEDSA efforts will focus on community organizing, labor advocacy and political education. “Politics is not every two or four years,” Gammoh said. “It’s every day.” For Arreola, art and culture are central to political resistance. He urged artists to use their work to challenge dominant narratives and counter what he described as U.S. propaganda. He said: “We’ve got to create art that resists and challenges the colonial and imperial violence of the United States.”

Senator Reyes Introduces SB 873 on Jan. 6 to Curb ICE Arrests In and Around Courthouse Grounds Community News

S

enator Eloise Gómez Reyes (D–Colton), introduced legislation that aims to prevent federal immigration agents from disrupting regularly scheduled court appearances with unannounced and indiscriminate arrests. SB 873, once amended in the coming weeks, will provide legal assurances that Californians are safe from immigration agents in and around the grounds of a courthouse. “The issue is clear cut,” said Senator Reyes. “One of the core

responsibilities of government is to protect people – not to inflict terror on them. California is not going to let the federal government make political targets out of people trying to be good stewards of the law. Discouraging people from coming to court makes our community less safe. I look forward to the robust discussions that will come from this measure, and ultimately, toward providing relief to impacted communities across the state.” “Using courthouses as arrest sites turns access to justice into a trap,” said Kate Chatfield, Executive Director of the California

Public Defenders Association. “It drives people away from courts, harms public safety, and erodes trust in the rule of law. This past year, we have seen people terrorized in and around courthouses by ICE arrests. We are pleased that Senator Reyes is championing legislation to protect California's residents and California's justice system.” SB 873 was introduced on January 6 and will be amended to include substantive language in the coming weeks. Rep. Pete Aguilar Condemns President Trump on the Fifth Anniversary of the January 6th Insurrection By Rep. Pete Aguilar

O

PHOTO REYES’ OFFICE

Senator Eloise Gomez Reyes passing SB 873 over the senate desk on January 6th, 2026 in Sacramento.

n Jan. 6th, 2026, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, former member of the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, released the following statement: “On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump incited a violent insurrection at the United States Capitol in an effort to steal the 2020 presidential election and halt the peaceful transfer of power. As a result of this tragic day, more than 100 police officers were injured and several lost their lives. I want to thank the Capitol Police officers and other law enforcement

agencies who responded that day for their extraordinary bravery and commitment to protecting the public and defending the United States Constitution and the rule of law. Five years later, the January 6th attack remains a stain on our nation’s history and Americans are less safe because of President Donald Trump. “Rather than keeping his promise to lower costs on day one, Donald Trump pardoned and released 1,500 violent criminals who participated in the attack back into communities across the country on the first day of his second term as president. This included individuals who were found guilty of beating police officers with flagpoles and fire ex-

tinguishers, and many who already had long criminal records, including rape, domestic violence and child abuse. Many of these pardoned individuals have since reoffended, threatening public safety and forcing law enforcement to spend time dealing with violent criminals who should have never been released in the first place. “Now, nearly a year into his second term, Donald Trump has done nothing but make our country less safe and more expensive. It’s clear where the President’s loyalties lie—and it’s not with the hardworking American people— it’s with the violent criminals he sent to do his bidding when he lost the 2020 election.”

FOHI clerk Adriana Gonzales, mother to a FOHI senior, fully understands college preparedness not only as a parent guiding her son to a thriving future, but as a staff member of the school. “This is a first-time experience for both of us to be able to have my child apply for college,” Adriana said. “I’m excited for him and he has a bright future ahead of him.”

The AVID Site Team award recognized FOHI for its outstanding contributions to the implementation and advancement of the AVID College and Career Readiness System.

FOHI’s AVID program reaches beyond its own campus, shaping college-going culture through Golden Bell Award–winning initiatives like the AVID-inspired College Application Submit Day (CASD), which celebrates seniors as they take the next step toward four-year universities. FOHI launched its first Submit Day in 2014, inspiring similar events at Henry J. Kaiser, A.B. Miller, Summit, and Jurupa Hills high schools.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. 10 New California Laws in Effect Jan. 1, 2026, From Plastic Bags to IVF Coverage, and Minimum Wage By Manny Sandoval

C

alifornia’s annual January law changeover is here. After the Legislature sends bills to the governor and they are signed, most “regular session” statutes take effect on Jan. 1 of the following year unless a law sets a different date or is passed as an urgency measure, according to the California Secretary of State. In 2025, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed 794 bills into law, according to a CalMatters tally of measures that reached his desk — though not all of those changes take effect on Jan. 1, and some have later start dates written into the bill text. Here are 10 of the most significant, debated or widely felt changes scheduled to begin Jan. 1, 2026: 1) Plastic checkout bags: the rules tighten again (SB 1053, 2024). California is moving to a stricter phase of its bag law. Under SB 1053, stores that charge for checkout bags will be limited to recycled paper carryout bags that meet state requirements. This builds on California’s earlier singleuse bag restrictions — notably SB 270 (2014) — and is aimed at reducing litter and waste while standardizing what qualifies as an allowable “checkout bag.” 2) IVF and infertility coverage: delayed, then expanding (SB 729, delayed by AB 116). One of the most closely watched health-policy changes is SB 729, which requires large-group health plans in California to cover infertility diagnosis and treatment, including in vitro fertilization. The requirement was pushed back to Jan. 1, 2026 after lawmakers and the governor approved a delay through AB 116 (a budget-related measure), with supporters arguing the change would expand access to care that is often financially out of reach. 3) State minimum wage rises again (annual adjustment under California minimum-wage law).

California’s minimum wage will increase to $16.90 per hour starting Jan. 1, 2026, under the state’s minimumwage framework that includes an annual adjustment. State labor officials say the update is designed to keep pace with economic conditions while providing a statewide wage floor for employers. 4) CARE Act eligibility expands to a new diagnosis category (SB 27). California’s courts will broaden eligibility for the Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Act beginning Jan. 1. Under SB 27, eligibility will include individuals who have bipolar I disorder with psychotic features, expanding beyond the program’s earlier diagnostic categories. Supporters describe the change as a way to reach more people living with severe mental illness who may cycle through crises without stable treatment.

The existing “move over” rule is getting broader. AB 390 expands the requirement to slow down and move over when approaching a stationary vehicle to include any stationary vehicles displaying flashing hazard lights or other warning devices, including certain maintenance vehicles. The goal, state safety agencies say, is to reduce roadside crashes that endanger workers, stranded drivers and emergency responders. 8) License plate “blockers”: new penalty targets California manufacturers (AB 1085). California is cracking down on devices designed to defeat plate readers and toll cameras. AB 1085 makes it an infraction — with a $1,000 fine — to manufacture in California a product intended to obscure or interfere with the visual or electronic reading of a license plate. State officials describe the law as a response to toll evasion and other crimes linked to plate-obscuring products.

5) Red-light camera tickets shift to civil penalties (SB 720).

9) E-bike rear visibility requirement expands beyond nighttime (AB 544).

Under SB 720, local governments can use an alternative automated red-light camera program where violations are treated as civil penalties. State summaries describe the approach as allowing tickets to be tied to the vehicle captured by the system rather than treating the incident like a traditional criminal-style infraction, and it is intended to reshape how automated enforcement is administered.

Under AB 544, electric bicycles must have a rear red reflector or a red light with a built-in reflector during all hours of operation, not only after dark. The measure also allows completion of a CHP-developed online safety course to satisfy certain training requirements tied to youth helmet violations. The change is aimed at improving visibility and safety as e-bike use grows.

6) DUI ignition interlock program extended through 2033 (AB 366).

10) E-bike and battery safety standards tighten for sales statewide (SB 1271).

California is extending its statewide ignition interlock device framework for certain DUI offenders. AB 366 keeps the program in place until Jan. 1, 2033, continuing the approach that allows eligible drivers to seek restricted driving privileges if an ignition interlock device is installed. State transportation officials describe the extension as part of an effort to reduce repeat impaired driving.

Beginning Jan. 1, California will require many e-bikes, powered mobility devices, batteries and charging systems to meet specified safety standards verified by accredited laboratory testing, and products must be labeled to show compliance. State safety officials say the intent is to reduce hazards such as battery fires and electrical malfunctions by keeping noncompliant products out of the marketplace.

7) “Slow down, move over” expands to more stopped vehicles (AB 390).
