he California Arts awarded Council $7,290 to Arts Connection (AC) as part of its new Artists Activating Communities program. The City of San Bernardino Fine Arts Commission also awarded a matching grant in the amount of $8100, making the programming possible. Artist/activist Michael Segura will lead the series of political cartooning workshops, to be held at The Garcia Center for the Arts in San Bernardino. The free workshops will engage participants in discussion around local, regional and national issues, as well as teaching fundamental cartooning techniques and materials. Phil Yeh, other guest artists and civic groups will be brought in for additional presentations. Participants will have the opportunity to publish work through the Inland Empire Community Newspapers, a special election issue of Uncle Jam magazine and the AC website. Artists Activating Communities is a new pilot grant program that supports sustained artistic residencies in community settings, demonstrating the arts to be a central component of civic life, and artists to be vital in shaping society. The projects are artistdriven, engage community members as active participants, and activate participants to develop and express their own creativity. First Session Begins, July 11 from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Garcia Center for the Arts, located at 536 W. 11th Street in San Bernardino.
