onna Malouf was having coffee with her husband, retired Colton Police captain Fred Malouf, when two gunmen decided to rob the Pepper Steak House on April 21, 1996. Little did she know that in the matter of minutes, her life would change forever.

“You have to stay persistent and stay on it,” Florez said.
Florez last week was named Colton High School’s top athlete and a nominee for the prestigious Ken Hubbs Award that will be awarded on May 9. “It’s an honor,” Florez said. “The Ken Hubbs Foundation voting me in as a nominee means a great deal to me.”

Since 1964, the Ken Hubbs Foundation has honored senior athletes from 25 local high schools. The Foundation selects each of the 25, male and female, Ken Hubbs School Award Winners based not only on athletic achievement, but also on citizenship, community involvement and service, student government and commitment to further their education.
Florez has played varsity football since his freshman year, and was the team’s starting quarterback, safety, and corner during the 2015 season. His statistics include 10 rushing touchdowns, four passing touchdowns, and three interceptions on defense. He’s also played as wide-receiver in previous years. In addition to serving as the senior captain for the football team, Florez serves as one of the Yellowjackets’ Track and Field team leaders.

CHS senior nominated for Ken Hubbs Award
s a multifaceted individual, Chris Florez finds that his ability to take on several tasks and responsibilities has helped become a stronger person and a mentor to younger residents in the community.
Twenty years later, Donna said the pain is still as fresh as it was that Sunday evening. “I pray a lot,” she said. “It doesn’t matter if it’s been twenty years or one year. It still is painful.”

When he’s not running on the track or throwing a football, the 18-year-old serves as a youth leader for Colton First Assembly’s youth ministry. He said he enjoys mentoring young children who attend the church. Hubbs cont. on next page
