DEATH IN DECATUR I'm attending the funeral of a friend this week in Decatur, Georgia.
A place I wrote about last year during my stay in a hostel — all the wonderful people I met, the city's rich and conflicted history....
I also wrote about a young man I befriended named “Jackson.” (As usual, when I tell a particularly sad story, I'm changing the name to protect the family's privacy.)
Jackson had run away from home when he was fifteen, and from our talks, it really seemed like Jackson was led astray by love. Anyway, I helped him call his family, and there were tears and smiles.
Money for a bus ticket was sent. So, when I left Decatur I assumed Jackson and his family would soon be reunited.
