One of the biggest myths that movies promote about studying abroad is that you will instantly find your people. Like Lizzie McGuire in “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” movies make it seem like you arrive, meet your roommate and classmates, visit different events and, suddenly, you find a group of friends that will attend your wedding.

But going to another country and leaving everything you know is not easy.

When I first arrived in the United States, I had mixed

feelings. Mixed, because I was happy to do what once seemed very far away, but I was also sad because my family and friends were not there to enjoy it with me. It took about eight months to adjust to a new culture, place, language and even food.

Every freshman feels like this, and the feeling can linger for months.

Of course, I didn’t want to be stuck in that cage of fear and loneliness all year.

Maybe someone would come and say hi to me while I was studying. But maybe not.

If life was as easy as waiting around, I think everyone

would be happy just sitting back and letting things come to them.

I suspect many new students will not only feel lost but also intimidated when they first come to IU. There are a lot of questions that you just can’t stop from appearing in your head: “What if my classmates don’t like who I am?,” “What if my roommate gets bored of me too easily?,” or “What if I’m not as funny as I used to be?”

Doubt can slowly grow until approaching new people feels nearly impossible because you don’t want to “ruin their moment” by mak-

ing them include you when they are already comfortable without you. So, you just wait until a miracle happens.

It’s okay to feel like that.

It took me a while to understand that sometimes you won’t meet people as easily as you did back home. Things were different there. You met people through your friends, school or family. And even if that connection with those new people didn’t work, you typically had someone to go back to.

This fear and anxiety are normal. You’re not only trying to get a degree in a different language, but also trying to

enjoy your college years with people you want to appreciate and grow with, and that doesn’t come easy.

But you don’t have to enjoy your college years only with friends. Never forget that teachers are there to help you.

I remember always staying after class to talk with a teacher about the topics I liked. Outside the classroom, I joined Public Relations Student Society of America, a club many public relations majors like me are a part of.

They explained how some classes worked and how to get internship experience, and it was both useful and

meaningful. Once I started to meet new people, I slowly gained more confidence in myself and starting a conversation with my classmates wasn’t a problem anymore.

Then, suddenly, you have a community. A small one, maybe, but one with which you share interests. You might even feel like they just appeared in front of you while you were doubting whether people would like you or not.

I didn’t want to replace the people that I still had back home because they have a special place in my heart.

But I learned it doesn’t work like that.

ington, the flagship campus, reported 4,481 international students from 150 countries of origin. Bloomington’s total enrollment was 48,626 for fall 2025. International student enrollment is down from 5,037 in fall 2024.

There will be people who know each other because they went to the same school, because they met during orientation or just because they are more social than a lot of us. That doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.

Take your time. The people that belong on your bookshelf are not always the ones you meet on your first day.

You don’t replace your old people with new ones.

You just expand your heart to put the people you love the most inside, while still being able to open up and build new connections.

Abbreviations that will come in handy at IU

At a school where students say “IU” more often than “Indiana University,” it’s no surprise most things get abbreviated in passing conversation.

So, if you hear a random string of letters around campus, they probably mean something. Here are a few definitions for the more common abbreviations you will encounter:

other campuses such as Indiana University Indianapolis, which is abbreviated as IUI. IMU IMU is short for the Indiana Memorial Union, which is the massive student union building in the middle of campus. With countless places to study, eat, hang out and even go bowling, the IMU is a popular place for students to meet and one of the most common abbreviations on campus.

IUB

SRSC

IUB is the short way of saying Indiana University Bloomington, the flagship campus of the university. This helps differentiate it from IU’s

The SRSC is short for the Student Recreational Sports Center, which is the oncampus fitness center. This center boasts multiple gyms,

racquetball courts, a running track and even an Olympicsize pool that has its own abbreviation: CBAC, the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.

MAC The MAC is short for IU’s Musical Arts Center, a massive performing venue that can seat over 1,400 people and primarily functions as a space for the Jacobs School of Music. Performers come year-round to show off their musical talent.

GISB GISB is short for the Global and International Studies Building, which is located across from the Herman B

Wells Library. This building houses the Hamilton Lugar School of International Studies, often abbreviated as HLS, which specializes in foreign cultures, policy and languages. This building is used as a meeting place for clubs such as the Board Game Engage club.

Services. They provide IT services of all kinds to students and faculty. This includes things like helping you access the Adobe suite for all your creative needs, enrolling or canceling your dining plan or even handling any problems you have with your CrimsonCard.

SPEA

TA

SPEA is short for the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

This school offers degrees such as public policy, environmental science and even nonprofit management.

TAs are the teaching assistants whom you can expect to see in large lecture classes.

These are normally graduate students or sometimes upperclassmen who help the professor give lectures, grade homework, lead groups and labs and help you with any questions or concerns you have with the class.

A Guide to the Office of International Services

The Office of International Services is Indiana University’s home for international student resources. From academic advising to employment authorization, the OIS offers a comprehensive guide for students that covers all areas of international study.

Here’s some key information about the OIS: Location and contact information The Office of International Services building is located on the IU Bloomington campus in the Ferguson International Center at 330 N. Eagleson Ave. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon and

1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

You can reach the office by phone at 812-855-9086 and by email at ois@iu.edu.

For more resources and information, the office’s website is ois.iu.edu.

Academic advising

There are several academic advising resources available across campus that the OIS helps students connect with. These resources include the Asian Culture Center, Latino Cultural Center and Writing Tutorial Services.

The ACC is located at 807 E. 10th St. and builds awareness of Asian American and Pacific Islander culture and history. The LCC, located at 715 E. Seventh St., provides

programming and support for Latino students. The WTS, located inside Wells Library, provides one-on-one writing help with academic and professional writing.

OIS before making any decisions that may affect your immigration status, or if you want to change your immigration status.

Immigration Status

Before you begin to look for employment opportunities, note that you must be authorized to work in the U.S. F-1 students need authorization for most categories of work, while J-1 students need authorization for any type of employment.

If you are authorized to work, IU has numerous resources to aid in the job search. Resources include Interstride, a global career development platform designed exclusively for international students and job fairs.

The OIS closely monitors changing immigration regulations. To ensure that you are maintaining your immigration status, regularly check all OIS emails and don’t hesitate to reach out to the office with questions.

It can be difficult to amend an immigration status violation, and things like volunteering, taking too many online courses or finishing your studies with an internship can impact your status.

Campus involvement The OIS can help you find your community on campus. IU hosts dozens of events to celebrate the annual International Education Week held during the third week of November, including IU World’s Fare, a festival filled with culture, art and dance from around the globe.

Interested in language immersion? The OIS can match international students with another IU student or staff member to meet weekly during the semester and teach each other their languages. This can be a great way to not only learn another language, but also to build connections on campus.

International Ambassadors International student ambassadors are here to answer any questions you may have about adjusting to life at IU and in the U.S. There are student ambassadors from more than 20 countries that are available to connect via Zoom, email and online chat.

Staff ambassadors from International Admissions are also available to help.

While studying at a large school like IU can be intimidating, finding guidance and community shouldn't be. If you have any questions regarding academics, events, admissions and more, the OIS is there to answer them.

Understanding U.S. immigration policies

Since President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025, his administration has implemented a series of immigration policy changes that impact international students.

While F-1 student visas remain available, new federal policies have expanded security screening, increased scrutiny during the visa application process and continued to enforce country-specific travel restrictions.

Students are encouraged to begin the visa process early and monitor updates from Indiana University's Office of International Services, the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, as immigration policies may change.

Here’s what to know: Applying for an F-1 visa Students admitted to IU must first receive a Form I-20 from the university before scheduling a visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate. Appointment availability varies by country, and applicants should apply as early as possible to allow time for visa processing before the start of the semester.

Some applications may require administrative processing or additional security reviews, which can extend processing times. Because of these potential delays, students should avoid making nonrefundable travel arrangements until their visas have been issued.

A visa interview does not guarantee a visa approval.

Nationality Act, consular officers must determine whether applicants qualify for the visa they are requesting. Applicants who are denied are generally informed of the legal basis for the decision and, depending on the reason for the denial, may be eligible to reapply after addressing the issue.

Expanded screening and social media vetting The U.S. Department of State has expanded screening procedures for many visa applicants. As part of the application process, applicants may be asked to provide social media identifiers used in the past five years, and consular officers may review publicly available online activity as part of identity verification and national security

screening. Officers evaluate account content for hostile attitudes toward the United States, ties to extremist or terrorist organizations and evidence of unlawful behavior.

Applicants may also be asked to provide additional documentation or participate in further background checks before a visa is issued.

Federal officials said the expanded vetting is intended to verify applicants' identities, detect fraud and address national security concerns.

Travel restrictions The Trump administration continues to enforce country-specific travel restrictions affecting both immigrant and certain nonimmigrant visa categories. The restrictions vary by country and may limit or suspend the

issuance of visas for nationals of affected countries.

Countries currently subject to restrictions include Afghanistan, Myanmar (formerly Burma), Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, among others. Additional countries are subject to partial restrictions or enhanced screening requirements. Students from affected countries should review current Department of State guidance and consult OIS before making international travel plans, as restrictions and exemptions may change.

Entering the United States Receiving an F-1 visa does not guarantee admission into the United States.

Upon arrival, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers determine whether travelers may enter the country.

Students should travel with a valid passport, F-1 visa, Form I-20 and supporting financial documentation.

Some travelers may be referred to secondary inspection, where officers conduct additional review of immigration documents before making an admission decision.

Maintaining F-1 status Once enrolled, international students must maintain full-time enrollment and keep their immigration records up to date.

Students should notify OIS of changes such as a new address, changes to their academic program or an exten-

sion of their expected graduation date.

Students should also consult OIS before withdrawing from classes, dropping below a full course load, accepting off-campus employment or taking a leave of absence, as these actions may affect their immigration status.

Staying informed Immigration policies continue to evolve, and federal guidance may change throughout the academic year. Indiana University recommends that international students rely on the OIS, the U.S. Department of State and USCIS for the most up-to-date information before traveling internationally or making decisions that could affect their immigration status.

Find your community at IU’s cultural centers

With over 48,000 students from around the world, IU Bloomington’s campus is a vibrant melting pot of cultures. And to help you find your place in this diverse community, IU has six cultural centers on campus, each with their own events, programs and outreach to help all students find their home away from home.

Asian Culture Center Located at 807 E. Tenth St., the Asian Culture Center is open to all students and promotes Asian American and Pacific Islander history, culture and awareness. The center was created in 1988 by a group of Asian and Asian American students, with help from the Asian American Association at IU. Students can access free tutoring through the Asian Language Learning Program at the center, attend discussions with scholars and guest speakers and receive mental health counseling provided

by IU Counseling and Psychological Services from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Students can also play mahjong every Monday from 4 to 6 p.m., along with other activities. For those interested, more information can be found at asianresource.indiana.edu.

First Nations Educational and Cultural Center The First Nations Educational and Cultural Center is home to American Indian and indigenous students at

IU. Located at 712 E. Eighth St., the center opened in 2007 and is run by the Office of Student Life.

The FNECC hosts events and programs that celebrate Native American and Indigenous cultures while fostering education and awareness in the community. Students can join the center to honor Native American Heritage Month in November, participate in Native American artist workshops and attend the annual Powwow.

Typically hosted in the spring, the IU Traditional Powwow is open to all ages and offers different activities and food. More information can be found at firstnations. indiana.edu.

Jewish Culture Center The Jewish Culture Center, founded at the Helene G. Simon Hillel Center at 730 E. Third St., helps students learn more about Jewish culture and tradition. Open since 1938, the center provides weekly Shabbat dinners on Fridays, classes for IU credit, volunteer opportunities and holiday and travel programs.

At the center, students can check in at its wellness center, read from its Judaic collection, attend its chapel and sanctuary for Shabbat services or eat at its dining hall with a Sunday Sports Grille.

Some programs include the Hoosiers for Israel, Israel Around the Table, a discussion group about Israeli society and politics, and the Maccabee Task Force trip to Israel, which was created in 2015 to “combat the disturbing spread of Antisemitism on college campuses.”

La Casa Latino Cultural Center Founded in 1973, the La Casa Latino Cultural Center, located at 715 E. Seventh St., provides programming and support for Latino students and their family.

Administered within the Office of Student Life, La Casa offers computer facilities, a Latino-related library, tutoring services, interpreters, counseling services and room reservations. Students can also come to celebrate National Hispanic Latine Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos, with traditional altars, food and activities.

LGBTQ+ Culture Center A program of the Office

of Student Life, the LGBTQ+ Culture Center provides a welcoming and affirming space for all students. Located at 705 E. Seventh St., the center offers resources, programming and support for LGBTQ+ students while educating the campus community about queer life and experiences.

Students can learn more about LGBTQ+ issues, receive counseling and free safer sex supplies through partner services and get resources from the LGBTQ+ Library.

The center fosters connections between a variety of groups. Some include the Queer Student Union, oSTEM which offers a supportive LGBTQ+ network for STEM students and Out at Kelly and Queer Students in Healthcare, which provide communities for students in business and healthcare.

Students can access an all-gender restroom map created by the Queer Student Union, free clothing from the Gender Affirming Closet, a guide to transitioning at IU and other educational and training programs.

Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center The Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center, part of the Office of Student Life, supports and connects Black IU students and faculty with activities.

Established during the late 1960s era of student activism by Herman Hudson, the first chair of the Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies, the center was named in honor of Marcellus Neal and Frances Marshall, the first

African American man and woman to graduate from Indiana University.

The center hosts a variety of events, including a FirstYear Pinning Ceremony, the Black Congratulatory Ceremony, musical performances and other activities, particularly during Black History Month.

Students can expect themed events for First Fridays, a networking event supported by different campus departments and Midday House Parties, a monthly event to check in with students, build community and exchange resources.

Located at 275 N. Eagleson Ave., students can visit the center’s library, computer lab, counseling services and get connected to other Black student organizations and Black-owned businesses. Students can learn more at blackculture.indiana.edu.

Whether you are seeking spiritual support, connection or just a place to worship, Bloomington offers many religious centers and resources for students around the world.

Here are some key religious centers you should know about:

Muslim Student Association

Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center Established by IU Professor Emeritus Thubten J. Norbu in 1979, the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center is a sanctuary nestled within Bloomington. The center holds the Kumbum Chamtse Ling temple and Kumbum West Monastery, offering a peaceful retreat for meditation and reflection.

Located at 3655 S. Snoddy Rd., the center provides a wide range of activities including workshops, teachings, seminars, initiations, retreats and ceremonies. For more information, visit tmbcc.org.

Islamic Center of Bloomington The Islamic Center of Bloomington serves the Muslim community in Bloomington through prayer, Quranic study, Islamic history and Arabic language classes, youth club and other community and volunteer events.

First United Methodist Church Located at 219 E. Fourth St., the First United Methodist Church is an inclusive “Christcentered” church that offers Sunday worship services, youth and young adult programs, community outreach and volunteering.

The church is open to anyone seeking a Christian community and offers two worship styles: Classic Worship at 9:30 a.m. and a contemporary worship service called “Common Ground” at 11:45 a.m.

Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship at IU Despite a name that sounds Greek, this group is not a fraternity or sorority.

Chi Alpha is a Christian student group that holds weekly worship services and core groups, which are groups that meet throughout the

week to do Bible studies, hang out and learn more about Jesus. The fellowship is open to all students exploring or practicing Christianity.

Chabad at IU Located at 703 E. Seventh St., Chabad at IU is a Jewish student organization that hosts Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, Judaism study groups and classes in additon toother social events.

Everyone is welcome to join the Bloomington Chabad community, and students can find more information at chabadiu.com.

IU Hillel IU Hillel, located at The Helene G. Simon Hillel Center on 730 E. Third St., is the center of Jewish life on Bloomington’s campus. Founded in 1938, the center provides a welcoming space for Jewish students, with Shabbat, holiday celebrations and other programs.

Within IU Hillel, students can join smaller student groups including First Year Students of Hillel, Hoosiers for Israel and Yad B’yad Mentorship, which connects incoming freshman students with upper-class mentors.

Eat around the world in Bloomington One of the many great things about Bloomington is its diverse food scene.

Whether you’re looking for hearty Indian food or refreshing sushi rolls, there’s an international restaurant near campus to satisfy your cravings and offer a slice of comfort.

While I could make a more exhaustive list — there are over 75 international restaurants in Monroe County — here are five spots worth checking out this fall semester.

around the world, including London, a city regarded for its Indian cuisine, but my loyalty still lies with this family-owned spot on Fourth Street. During my freshman year, I practically lived off its butter chicken combo meal at the Indiana Memorial Union.

For anyone craving warm and comforting Indian classics, Taste of India is the ideal spot. Plus, it’s college budget-friendly, with a daily lunch buffet for $13.99. Although I’ve never met a mango lassi I didn’t love, Taste of India’s is especially good.

the IMU combo meals that makes me yearn for the glory days when I had a meal plan. Bivi’s serves handmade tamales and can be found at The Globe in the IMU, at the Saturday Farmers' Market and at the Bloomingfoods Co-op Market.

Bivania Torres opened Bivi’s Tamales in 2006 out of Spencer, Indiana, and prioritizes fresh, high-quality ingredients like avocado sauce and mango salsa. The emphasis on quality is evident in every tamale I’ve ordered, which would be too many to count.

Third St., Restaurant Ami is a must-visit spot for Japanese cuisine. The menu includes classic comfort dishes like ramen and fried rice, as well as bold and creative sushi rolls. My go-to roll at Ami is the old reliable Rainbow Roll with crab meat, cucumber and avocado. It’s simple, but it gets the job done.

The service is impeccable, the atmosphere is welcoming and the food is always fresh and delicious.

No complaints.

Döner Kebab Although not a restaurant, Döner Kebab is a true Bloomington classic.

The food truck is typically parked along Kirkwood

Avenue, oftentimes by the Monroe County Public Library. It offers authentic and affordable Europeanstyle kebabs and gyros.

Conveniently parked close to campus, Döner Kebab is a lovely lunch option to grab between classes.

You just can’t go wrong with a freshly made chicken gyro topped with crisp vegetables and feta cheese.

Samira For authentic Afghan flavors, don’t miss this spot at 100 W. Sixth St. Samira offers elevated plates like roasted salmon and lamb dishes, as well as kebabs served with basmati rice and vegetables.

I recommend visiting

during Samira’s lunch buffet, served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday and Friday, to try a wider range of options. And if you have a sweet tooth, the baklava is phenomenal.

While I recommend each spot on this list, I think the best advice would be to go out and explore Bloomington’s food scene for yourself. Discover the hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint that serves your new favorite queso, find the Chinese spot that you and your roommates will order each weekend, try every Thai restaurant you can find on Fourth Street (before concluding that Siam House is superior). Bloomington is your oyster.

The familiar taste of home doesn’t have to be far away when you’re in Bloomington.

The city boasts a wide variety of international markets and groceries that offer ingredients, snacks and produce from all over the world.

This comprehensive list should be your first stop, whether you’re trying to recreate a classic recipe, find a new snack or want to cook something different than usual.

B-Town International Market This grocery store, located at 2901 E. Covenanter Drive and across the street from the Kroger at College Mall, is a great place to find a variety of Asian foods. Inside, you can find a mix of fresh, frozen and packaged foods like kimchi, tteokbokki or ramen. There is also a fresh food section that includes meat and vegetables. Additionally, a wide range of popular snacks like flavored seaweed, cookies, candy and chips make up a large portion of the market’s offerings.

Apna Bazaar International Market Located at 2556 E. Third St., Apna Bazaar is an Indian grocery store that also offers prepared food such as

hot samosas and sweets like jalebi. You can find spices, meats and sauces among the shelves of the store. The market’s offerings also include ingredients used in certain Central Asian and multicultural dishes, such as Manchurian balls in the market’s frozen section, as well as paratha, a South Asian flatbread that can also be purchased hot at Afghan teahouse Kabul Corner.

La Bodega Latin Market This market, located at 1915 S. Walnut St., doubles as a restaurant that sells Mexican cuisine, baked goods and tacos. The breakfast menu features a long list of French toast, pancakes and egg dishes, such as omelets and skillets. Other restaurant items include burritos, enchiladas, a variety of seafood and agua fresca. As far as groceries, this market sells meat, classic Hispanic beverages and dessert items like dulce de leche and tres leches ingredients.

World Foods Market World Foods Market, located at 106 E. Second St., has a range of items from Europe, Asia, Latin America and beyond. If you’re looking for a market with international groceries from across the globe, this is the place to go. The market sells various sweets and pastries

such as dates, dried fruits and cookies from the Chicago-based Nazareth Sweets, a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern bakery. The market’s bread and grain selections include basmati rice and multiple kinds of flatbreads.

Other offerings include kalamata olives, tzatziki, dairy, meat and coffee.

4th Street International Market Last but not least, this market, located at 408 E. Fourth St., is both a deli and a grocery. Their deli menu includes Mediterranean classics like gyros, spanakopita, hummus and tabouli salad.

And the grocery offers kitchen staples like spices and halal meats. This is a convenient stop if you’re in the mood for a sit-down meal, as the market is in the same building as Dat’s Cajun and Btown Gyros, two restaurants focused on Creole and Mediterranean cuisine. There are many other international restaurants along Fourth Street if you’re looking for some more variety.

It can be difficult knowing where to shop in a new place, but Bloomington is a city filled with all kinds of food. Regardless of whether these cuisines are familiar to you or not, college is the time to explore new foods and cultures, and these groceries are a great starting point.

Mental health resources for international students

Being an international student comes with its own set of unique challenges.

Between moving, starting new classes and being far away from home, it can take a toll on your mental health.

According to the Student Health Center, previous data showed around five percent of Counseling and Psychological Services clients are international students.

The Student Health Center website says that most students will experience a challenging period of adjustment, but advises

students to use their CAPS resources if the symptoms of culture shock do not improve over time.

“International students have the same access to CAPS as any other students,” CAPS Director Kodee Walls said in an email.

While it can feel isolating moving to a new country, IU is home to various culture centers, resources and clubs where students can find others going through similar situations.

“CAPS offers multilingual providers,” Walls wrote. “Information on the languages can be found on our main page with the header ‘We speak your lan-

guage.’”

She also wrote that CAPS participates in resource events held by the Office of International Services to make sure all students have information about their services.

“We encourage students of all backgrounds to build meaningful relationships with one another as they make the transition to campus, whether they’re coming from five miles away or five thousand miles away,” Walls wrote. “Building this social capital helps create a support network to help during challenging moments, as well as the celebratory times.”

The Student Health Center advises students who are experiencing culture shock to stay active, make new friends, and get enough sleep.

The Student Health Center hosts an international student support group Wednesdays from 1:30-2:30pm, providing a space for international students to receive and provide support to others having similar experiences.

In order to participate, you can call CAPS at (812855-5711) to arrange a free initial consultation appointment. Counseling groups are free to all IU students who have paid the student health fee.

Advice from International Student Ambassadors

For international students, the transition to both a new school and country can be intimidating.

Indiana University has seven International Student Ambassadors from five different countries who are available for all students. ambassadors Student have many roles on campus, some of which are leading campus tours, welcoming new students, participating in panels and providing advice from personal experience.

For Love Mali, a rising junior from India, the international student ambassadors were very helpful with the transition to IU during his first

year, which inspired him to become one.

The program helped Mali get in touch with a larger portion of international students and helped him to become more outgoing, he said.

Mali suggests being open to any and every new experience when moving to IU in order to build your own community.

“I think ISA has been one of my highlights in the two years I’ve been at IU,” Mali said. “It’s so much fun.”

Each ambassador is available to answer questions online through Unibuddy about academics, campus life and adjusting to life in the U.S. These student ambassadors can be a helpful resource before even stepping foot on

campus. Sophomore student ambassador and director of the ISA, Luna da Guia Martins experienced this firsthand.

Da Guia Martins decided to go to IU after Michael Shereda and Raghvendra Singh, two international admissions counselors, visited her high school in Brazil. “[Shereda] was so helpful, and he made me feel like even though it was such a huge university, I wasn’t just a number there,” da Guia Martins said.

Aside from introducing her to IU, the work that Shereda and Singh did also inspired her to become an ambassador for other international students.

She recommends trying to avoid putting yourself in a

box and taking advantage of opportunities as an international student.

“Finding a community of international students was very very helpful because I met people that were going through the same thing as me, and that’s a big part of why I became a director for the ISA,” da Guia Martins said.

The transition was much easier than expected, and becoming an ambassador was a great way to find friends, da Guia Martins said.

Sophomore Ayalguu Unensaikhan also dealt with the transition last year. Her biggest piece of advice would be to put yourself out there by going to Welcome Week events, joining clubs, attending cultural events, and to not

be afraid of starting conversations with new people, she wrote in an email.

For Unensaikhan, finding a community of other international students is what made her transition to the U.S. easier and helped her to feel less alone.

“I was definitely homesick at first, and adjusting to

a new culture, education system, and daily life took time,” Unensaikhan wrote. “But as I met new people, got involved on campus, and built my own routine, Bloomington gradually started to feel like home.”

Moving across the world taught her how to be more independent, resilient and confident, she said.

The job search playbook for international students

For college students, having a job can be an extremely important part of university life. But while for some the application process seems simple, for students attending IU on a visa, the employment process is not quite as simple as submitting a resume through Handshake. If you’re an international student looking for a job, here are a few important pieces of information to keep in mind before beginning the process.

Know the difference between having an F-1 or a J-1 student visa.

Before figuring out what job you want to have on the IU campus you need to know whether you are attending school in the U.S. on an F-1 or J-1 student visa. Determining this will help you figure out what your options are and what steps you have to complete to get a job.

The main differences between an F-1 or J-1 visa are their purposes. While an F-1 visa is for students pursuing full-time academic or vocational studies in the U.S., a J-1 visa is primarily for students participating in an approved educational or cultural exchange program.

Both F-1 and J-1 visas come with restrictions and additional steps students must follow when applying for jobs.

Apply for work authorization.

Whether you are an F-1 or a J-1 student, getting the appropriate work

authorization is an important step of the job search process for international students.

While J-1 students will need work authorization for any type of employment, F-1 students will only need it for most categories of work.

However, working without authorization can result in a violation on your Student and Exchange Visitor Information System record, so it is important to follow federal regulations.

According to the OIS, F-1 students “do not need authorization from OIS to work on the IU Bloomington campus.” While you do not need authorization for on-campus employment specifically, there are still requirements you must meet to maintain your residency status while still being employed legally.

Some of these conditions include enrolling as a fulltime student and working no more than 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. Other forms of employment available to F-1 students, such as Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training, will often require authorization.

For J-1 students, the OIS will need to authorize all forms of employment before you begin working. While ultimately authorization is approved by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, both F-1 and J-1 students can fill out the “OnCampus Work Authorization” e-form through Atlas which will be processed by the OIS. This form must be filled out once a year, every 12-month period, in order for your

authorization to be approved and continued.

Obtain a social security number to provide to your employer.

In the United States, anyone receiving income must provide their employer with a Social Security number. An SSN is issued to residents of the U.S. to act as a primary identifier for tracking earnings and determining eligibility for Social Security benefits and certain government services.

Getting an SSN is something you must apply for in person at a local Social Security Administration office. You can find the Bloomington branch of the Social Security Administration office at 515

W. Patterson Drive. While it is closed on the weekends, the office is typically open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on week days.

There are three primary documents all international students must have to apply for an SSN, regardless if they are an F-1 or J-1 student. A valid passport; a document indicating nonimmigrant or immigrant status, such as an I-20 or DS-2019; and one additional piece of identification like a student ID, driver’s license or credit card must be provided upon application for an SSN. Depending on your circumstances, additional materials may be required.

For information on whether or not these extra documents

apply to you, the OIS has the additional materials listed under the Student Employment page.

Timing can also be a difficult thing to work with when applying for an SSN. The OIS “strongly recommends that you wait a minimum of four weeks after entry into the United States (or Change of Status) before applying for a Social Security number.” It is also suggested that you wait for a job offer before applying for an SSN. If you’ve already begun working and your employer is still waiting for you to provide your SSN, the OIS suggests you refer them to their website or the Social Security Administration for further explanation on

the wait times. Otherwise, you cannot apply earlier than 30 days before your employment start date.

Use the resources provided by IU’s Office of International Services.

While the job application process can seem quite daunting, the OIS is there to make everything a bit easier to digest. From a breakdown of the different employment options available depending on your visa to help finding a job on campus, the OIS is a great resource for students to use. Keeping in contact with their office for any questions or concerns you have cannot only help you find a job but make sure you maintain your visa status.

International sports are making waves at IU Indiana’s sports teams have felt the impact of the international community

With just under 4,500 international students at Indiana University Bloomington last fall, Indiana’s sports teams have felt the impact of the large international community on campus.

But on campus, international students have become some of the brightest stars in sports.

Football The bright lights at Memorial Stadium and the 2026 National Championship victory have brought many eyes to the Indiana football team.

Even with football historically dominated by American-

born athletes, the Hoosiers will have two international players for the upcoming season: sophomore punter Billy Gowers and redshirtsenior kicker Paddy McAteer.

Gowers hails from Melbourne, Australia, and became a star in the Australian Football League. Although Aussie rules football is a completely different game compared to the American

version, Gowers moved to the United States after a fiveseason career in the AFL. Gowers played in 13 games last season as a punter for the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and transferred to Curt Cignetti’s program this offseason.

McAteer also played a different version of football before moving to America: Gaelic football. The national sport of Ireland is a cross

between soccer and rugby, but McAteer used his kicking knowledge to become a specialist for Troy University over the past two seasons.

The Mullaghbawn, Ireland, native joined Indiana through the transfer portal this past offseason.

men’s and women’s basketball programs also feature international talent.

Istanbul, Turkey, native and junior center Samet Yigitoglu looks to help second-year head coach Darian DeVries make the NCAA tournament after the Hoosiers barely missed out on the dance last season.

The Hoosiers will also bring in freshman center Clemens Sokolov from Nuremberg, Germany.

On the women’s side, head coach Teri Moren will have four international players in her 13th season with Indiana. Senior forward Jess Petrie and freshman forward Zoe Jackson come from the eastern coast of Australia, while freshman guard Camille Pangonis and junior forward Ashlyn Anderson are both natives of Ontario, Canada.

Fall sports Men’s soccer and volleyball were two fall sports programs to make their respective postseason tournaments last season, plus they showcase international talent.

On the pitch, senior forward Collins Oduro and freshman forward Michael Adu-Gyamfi both hail from

Ghana, while redshirt-senior midfielder Alex Matthews is from England.

For volleyball, sophomore setter Teodora Krickovic was first-team All-Big Ten last season and is playing for Serbia at the U22 European Championships this summer.

Another fall sport, field hockey, is stacked full of international talent.

The Hoosiers have five international players from countries such as Spain, the Netherlands and England.

Madrid, Spain, native and senior midfielder Inés Garcia Prado was named a National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American last season.

Winter sports For other winter sports, the dominant men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs are also loaded with international talent. Senior Zalán Sárkány competed for Hungary dur-

ing the 2024 Summer Olympics, as the men’s side of the program has five other nonAmericans on the roster, including swimmers from France, India and Singapore.

The women’s team has seven swimmers from other countries, including three from Canada, as well as New Zealand and Mexico. Junior Jonette Laegreid from Norway medaled in the 400-meter medley relay last season.

Spring sports During the spring season, Indiana baseball had three players from Ontario, Canada, including sophomore infielder Will Moore. The women’s tennis team had five international players — including sisters Nicole and Alessandra Teodosescu — and men’s tennis had two.

With many sports free for students to attend, the Indiana teams provide countless opportunities to see international sports stars throughout the school year.

COLUMN: 3 must watch movies about American college life

College can be a scary time for any student. Especially if you’re attending a university in a new country with no idea what to expect.

While there is no way to be 100% certain of everything college brings, movies can often provide some insight on college life. So, if you are looking for films to prepare you for Indiana University, here are three films to help ease the transition.

“Legally Blonde” (2001) If you’re hoping to find a movie that is both fun and inspiring, then “Legally Blonde” is the right choice for you.

The film follows fashionable sorority girl, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), after she gets into Harvard Law School. Though her intelligence is often doubted by nearly everyone around her, Elle is determined to succeed and win her ex-boyfriend Warner (Matthew Davis) back after he broke up with her.

Don’t be mistaken though, “Legally Blonde” is about so much more than a girl chasing a man. The film delivers a powerful message about recognizing selfworth and pushing yourself despite what others might think of you. Though hopefully your college experience is smoother than Elle’s was, Elle Woods is a great student

role model for when school seems tough.

“Pitch Perfect” (2012) Finding friends once you get to college can be difficult, but “Pitch Perfect” shows us that sometimes those connections can be made in the most unlikely of places.

This musical comedy follows Beca (Anna Kendrick), a cynical freshman and aspiring DJ. She joins The Barden Bellas, a disgraced all-female a cappella group at the fictional college of Barden University.

Though she is reluctant to like the group at first, Beca quickly begins to bond with the other girls and helps the organization find a cappella glory. While “Pitch Perfect”

has become a classic for its fun characters and excellently done covers of popular songs, this movie also provides some valuable lessons to any college student on the importance of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

From the very start of the film it’s clear nobody in The Bellas is perfect. Each member comes with their own little quirks or reasons they don’t feel like they fit in, but within this a cappella group they are able to work together and create a family. That’s what college is all about: to look past where you think you should be or do and instead go out of your comfort zone to find a community in even the most unexpected places.

“Monsters University” (2013) What happens if you get to college and learn you are nowhere near as prepared as you thought you were? It can happen to anyone, but don’t stress too much because “Monster’s University” reassures us that if this happens all is not lost.

The film acts as a prequel to Disney’s 2001 hit film “Monsters, Inc.,” once again following James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), only this time as new students at Monsters University. Right away things are off to a rocky start for Mike and Sulley. They don’t start off as the best friends fans of the franchise know them to be
